This edition of Buzz Books: Young Adult provides substantial pre-publication excerpts from 20 forthcoming young adult and middle grade books. Now everyone can share the same access to the newest YA voices the publishing industry is broadcasting for the fall/winter season. Extensive publishing information, including promotion plans and publicity contacts, are included in this NetGalley version. Excerpts include new work from established leaders in the field (James Dashner, Jennifer Donnelly, Patrick Ness, and Lauren Oliver), authors best-known for their adult books (Eleanor Herman and Cammie McGovern), and newsmaking titles such as the highly graphic History of Glitter and Blood, Illuminae, and The Thing About Jellyfish.

You will find a full range of YA titles previewed here —dystopian, romance, fantasy, sci-fi, humor, literary and more — and you will find some works for tweens and middle-grade readers. As always, many are sure to make bestseller and “best of” lists.

Four of our titles will be featured at this year’s Book Expo America convention on their own YA or Middle Grade Editors Buzz panels: Everything Everything, Nightfall, This Raging Light, and The Thing About Jellyfish. Plus, half of our 20 Buzz Books: Young Adult authors will be in attendance at BEA.

I really can’t believe that I am sitting here writing about upcoming fall/winter books when its only been a few weeks of summer.

I am always so happy when Publishers Lunch put out there Buzz Books for the upcoming seasons especially for the young adult books and that they expanded it to include more books. This is the third young adult Buzz Book and I enjoyed reading this and getting the chance to get a sneak peek into the upcoming young adult books that are coming out very soon.

The Buzz Books 2015 Young Adult Fall/Winter edition features 2o exclusive excerpts of new young adult titles. Each title includes the cover of the book, summary and a few chapters. Just enough to suck you into wanting to read the book or books asap.

Just from reading these 20 snippets I have to say that I think this Fall/Winter there is a ton of great young adult books coming out that I am pretty excited to read.

Here is the list of books that were mentioned:

  • This Raging Light by Estelle Laure
  • **Not If I See You First by Eric Lindstrom
  • **A Step Toward Falling by Cammie McGovern
  • A Story of Glitter and Blood by Hannah Moskowitz
  • **Dumpling Go Big or Go Home by Julie Murphy
  • The Rest Of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness
  • **This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp
  • Curiosity House The Shrunken Head by Lauren Oliver & H.C. Chester
  • Hello, Goodbye and Everything In Between by Jennifer E Smith
  • The Game of Lives by James Dashner

Here are a few of the titles that peaked my interest:
** This innovative, heartfelt debut novel tells the story of a girl who’s literally allergic to the outside world. When a new family moves in next door, she begins a complicated romance that challenges everything she’s ever known. The narrative unfolds via vignettes, diary entries, texts, charts, lists, illustrations, and more.

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Gabriella Mallory, AP student and perfect-daughter-in-training, stands barefoot on a public toilet for three hours while her school is on lockdown. Someone has planted a bomb and she is hiding. The bomb is defused but the would-be-bomber is still at large. And everyone at Central High School is a suspect. The school starts a top-secret crisis help line and Gabi is invited to join. When she does, she is drawn into a suspenseful game of cat and mouse with the bomber, who has unfinished business. He leaves threatening notes on campus. He makes threatening calls to the help line. And then he begins targeting Gabi directly. Is it because her father is the lead police detective on the case? Is the bomber one of her new friends. Could it be her new boyfriend with his complicated past? As the story unfolds, Gabi knows she is somehow connected to the bomber. Even worse she is part of his plan. Can Gabi reach out and stop him? Or will she be too late?

** A stunning debut about how grief can open the world in magical ways.

After her best friend dies in a drowning accident, Suzy is convinced that the true cause of the tragedy was a rare jellyfish sting. Retreating into a silent world of imagination, she crafts a plan to prove her theory–even if it means traveling the globe, alone. Suzy’s achingly heartfelt journey explores life, death, the astonishing wonder of the universe…and the potential for love and hope right next door.
From Jennifer Donnelly, the critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of A Northern Light and Revolution, comes a mystery about dark secrets, dirty truths, and the lengths to which people will go for love and revenge. For fans of Elizabeth George and Libba Bray, These Shallow Graves is the story of how much a young woman is willing to risk and lose in order to find the truth.

Jo Montfort is beautiful and rich, and soon—like all the girls in her class—she’ll graduate from finishing school and be married off to a wealthy bachelor. Which is the last thing she wants. Jo dreams of becoming a writer—a newspaper reporter like the trailblazing Nellie Bly.

Wild aspirations aside, Jo’s life seems perfect until tragedy strikes: her father is found dead. Charles Montfort shot himself while cleaning his pistol. One of New York City’s wealthiest men, he owned a newspaper and was a partner in a massive shipping firm, and Jo knows he was far too smart to clean a loaded gun.

The more Jo hears about her father’s death, the more something feels wrong. Suicide is the only logical explanation, and of course people have started talking, but Jo’s father would never have resorted to that. And then she meets Eddie—a young, smart, infuriatingly handsome reporter at her father’s newspaper—and it becomes all too clear how much she stands to lose if she keeps searching for the truth. But now it might be too late to stop.

The past never stays buried forever. Life is dirtier than Jo Montfort could ever have imagined, and this time the truth is the dirtiest part of all.
**  Three royal houses ruling three interplanetary systems are on the brink of collapse, and they must either ally together or tear each other apart in order for their people to survive.

Asa is the youngest daughter of the house of Fane, which has been fighting a devastating food and energy crisis for far too long. She thinks she can save her family’s livelihood by posing as her oldest sister in an arranged marriage with Eagle, the heir to the throne of the house of Westlet. The appearance of her mother, a traitor who defected to the house of Galton, adds fuel to the fire, while Asa also tries to save her sister Wren’s life . . . possibly from the hands of their own father.

But as Asa and Eagle forge a genuine bond, will secrets from the past and the urgent needs of their people in the present keep them divided?

Author Tessa Elwood’s debut series is an epic romance at heart, set against a mine field of political machinations, space adventure, and deep-seeded family loyalties.
For fans of We Were Liars and How I Live Now comes a haunting, sexy, magically realistic debut about a famiy caught between a violent history, a taboo romance, and the mysteries lurking in their own backyard.

Every October Cara and her family become inexplicably and unavoidably accident-prone. Some years it’s bad, like the season when her father died, and some years it’s just a lot of cuts and scrapes. This accident season–when Cara, her ex-stepbrother, Sam, and her best friend, Bea, are 17–is going to be a bad one. But not for the reasons they think.

Cara is about to learn that not all the scars left by the accident season are physical: There’s a long-hidden family secret underneath the bumps and bruises. This is the year Cara will finally fall desperately in love, when she’ll start discovering the painful truth about the adults in her life, and when she’ll uncover the dark o
A story where edge-of-your-seat horror meets post-apocalyptic thriller, perfect for fans of Lois Lowry and The Mazerunner

On Marin’s island, sunrise doesn’t come every twenty-four hours—it comes every twenty-eightyears. Now the sun is just a sliver of light on the horizon. The weather is turning cold and the shadows are growing long.

Because sunset triggers the tide to roll out hundreds of miles, the islanders are frantically preparing to sail south, where they will wait out the long Night.

Marin and her twin brother, Kana, help their anxious parents ready the house for departure. Locks must be taken off doors. Furniture must be arranged. Tables must be set. The rituals are puzzling—bizarre, even—but none of the adults in town will discuss why it has to be done this way.

Just as the ships are about to sail, a teenage boy goes missing—the twins’ friend Line. Marin and  Kana are the only ones who know the truth about where Line’s gone, and the only way to rescue him is by doing it themselves. But Night is falling. Their island is changing.

And it may already be too late.
** Critically acclaimed memoirist Aaron Hartzler, author of Rapture Practice, takes an unflinching look at what happens to a small town when some of its residents commit a terrible crime. This honest, authentic debut novel—inspired by the events in the Steubenville rape case—will resonate with readers who’ve ever walked that razor-thin line between guilt and innocence that so often gets blurred, one hundred and forty characters at a time.

The party at John Doone’s last Saturday night is a bit of a blur. Kate Weston can piece together most of the details: Stacey Stallard handing her shots, Ben Cody taking her keys and getting her home early. . . . But when a picture of Stacey passed out over Deacon Mills’s shoulder appears online the next morning, Kate suspects she doesn’t have all the details. When Stacey levels charges against four of Kate’s classmates, the whole town erupts into controversy. Facts that can’t be ignored begin to surface, and every answer Kate finds leads back to the same questions: Who witnessed what happened to Stacey? And what responsibility do they have to speak up about what they saw?

** Imagine a time when the gods turn a blind eye to the agony of men, when the last of the hellions roam the plains, and evil stirs beyond the edges of the map. A time when cities burn, and in their ashes, empires rise.

Alexander, Macedon’s sixteen-year-old heir, is on the brink of discovering his fated role in conquering the known world, but finds himself drawn to a newcomer…

Katerina must navigate the dark secrets of court life while keeping hidden her own mission: kill the queen. But she doesn’t account for her first love…

Jacob will go to unthinkable lengths to win Katerina, even if it means having to compete withHephaestion, a murderer sheltered by the prince.

And far across the sea, Zofia, a Persian princess and Alexander’s unmet betrothed, wants to alter her destiny by seeking the famed and deadly Spirit Eaters.

Weaving fantasy with the shocking details of real history, New York Times bestselling author ofSex with Kings Eleanor Herman reimagines the greatest emperor the world has ever known, Alexander the Great, in the first book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series.
** For fans of Marie Lu and James Dashner comes the first book in an epic new series.

“Brace yourself. You’re about to be immersed in a mindscape that you’ll never want to leave.”
—Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of the Legend trilogy

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Product Review/ Roam Mobility USA Travel Sim Card

roammobility

Before I begin this post I should let you know that this is a sponsored post. I was graciously supplied a free USA Travel SIM Card and a phone plan when I went to NYC for BEA at the end of May for a honest and sincere review.

This year before heading down to NYC for BEA I was researching my phone options because I have an iPhone 5c and I need to stay in touch with my family at home. This is the only way I can travel with a piece of mind.

I have to admit that I was shocked at how much it would cost me to stay connected. The phone plans are ridiculous here in Canada and any add on plans so that I can use my phone in the USA is crazy. I was a little shocked at how much I would have to pay so that was when I started looking around and found out about Roam Mobility.

I looked their site over and I was surprised at how much cheaper it was. The only expense I had to cover was unlocking my phone with my current cell phone provider, Koodo and that was $35 Canadian.

Prices:

I was surprised at what Roam Mobility was offering. The big thing for me was being able to call my family in Montreal and to be able to text them as well as call and text friends in the USA.

I was leaving Montreal, May 26th in the AM and traveling into NYC. I was going to be there for 5 days. Since Koodo is my provider they were offering for a 10 day package with unlimited minutes, 250 MB of data, unlimited outgoing texts and free incoming texts for $40. If I was to surpass the data I would have to pay $5/50 MB and honestly thats not alot so I checked out the next plan and it was basically the same except it was for 30 days with 750MB for $75 which is a little bit much and I knew that I would be traveling to the USA again in about two months and I would have to pay the same thing over again.

So enter Roam Mobility. With Roam Mobility you can purchase a plan for the number of days you are in the USA for. Since I was traveling I needed a plan that would cover me 6 days. I was able to get a Text+Talk+Data for $3.95/day ($24.89 total) and I got unlimited talk (local and long distance), text and data. This was the better deal considering I will be heading to the USA again shortly and all I have to do is top up my account before leaving and pop in the USA Sim card and I am good to go.

Coverage:

Roam Mobility has a map online that shows you their coverage and I never encountered any problems with coverage in New York City or on the way to and from. The only problems were and this happens to everyone is along the Adirondack Mountains where there is no cell phone coverage. You should note that the SIM card doesn’t work in Canada and will only work once you cross into the USA.

Set Up:

You can purchase SIM cards online from Roam Mobility or through your local store which is listed HERE or HERE. Once you have the SIM card all you have to do is create an account to activate the SIM card and purchase your plan. Just remember your phone needs to be unlocked in order for the card to work.

To set up an account and to activate the card was super easy. I can actually say that because I am not very technically savvy and if I say its easy then its easy.

Then all you have to do is insert the USA SIMS card and perhaps add the new APN (and you will be provided with all this information) and you are good to go. Please Roam Mobility will even send you a text just in case. You don’t have to worry about anything.

Overall thoughts:

I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to review this because its the first time I am doing anything like this for electronics but I hope you find this review helpful. I am completely impressed with Roam Mobility. The representive who contacted me got me all set up with easy detailed emails and when I say that I mean it was all straight forward nothing complicated about it.

Since I am traveling to the USA again in about a month or two my SIMS card will be activate again until 365 days from now when all you have to do is top up your plan. I am sure I will be back and forth to the USA and at this rate it will be the cheapest way to go when it comes to a phone plan.

All you need to do if you choose Roam Mobility is keep your SIM card active within a 365 day period. I highly recommend Roam Mobility if you are traveling to the USA and need to keep in touch with family back home or even to have a phone in the USA.

Thanks to @RoamMobility for keeping me connected while I was in NYC. #RoamFree

Review/ Prodigal & Riven

Review/ Prodigal & RivenProdigal & Riven Series: The Lost Imperials #2 & #3

Format: Paperback
on May 5th, 2015
Pages: 157 & 197

Prodigal Book 2:

Two journeys. One inescapable outcome. No time to lose.

Stein has been with the Hollows for as long as she can remember. Taken as a child, she has no memories of her past—and that's always been fine by her. Until the day she stumbles across a hidden journal containing the devastating truth about her paternity. Now everything she thought she knew—and everyone she thought she could trust—has changed. The truth about who she is and where she came from is a secret so deep, it will rock the Hollows and the Tesla Institute alike.
During a test to verify her bloodlines, Stein makes a terrible discovery. She is carrying a rare genetic mutation that is slowly killing her. Unsure who to turn to and running out of time, she has no choice but to turn to Tesla—her most hated enemy—for help. But can she trust the man who she's been fighting against her whole life, or will she end up another piece in his deadly game of cat and mouse with the people who betrayed her so long ago?

Riven Book 3:

Two journeys. One inescapable outcome. No time to lose.

What should be a routine mission leaves Ethan with a serious problem. He's fractured—a break between mind and body that leaves him at the mercy of his Rifter abilities, which are quickly tearing him apart. He will have to trust the only person who might know how to fix him, a mysterious Rifter named Stewart Stills, who seems to have a special connection with the time stream.

Forced to face his dark past and a decision he may never forgive himself for, he will be trained unlike any of the others, to become a true guardian for time. If he accepts, it will mean leaving everyone he loves behind. If he refuses, time itself could unravel. After a glimpse of the dark future awaiting them all, he will have to choose between destiny and desire. Will he rise up and take his place as a defender of the natural order, or will he watch as all of time burns at the hands of the girl he loves?
Welcome to the time war.

I am so thrilled that I was able to stop by the Clean Teen booth to pick up a signed copy of Prodigal & Riven by two of my favorite authors Sherry Ficklin and Tyler Jolley and I was lucky enough to get to spend some time with them. They are two of the most awesome authors out there.

As per BEA tradition this was the book I packed with me to read on the train ride home. If you recall from my previous BEA (2013) I was lucky enough to have met Sherry and Tyler at a breakfast their publisher had put on for selected bloggers. I was lucky enough to have sat near them and they spoke about  their first book, Extracted and I’m not going to lying this wasn’t a genre I have read or had an interest in but listening to them both speak about the book I knew I had to read it and I don’t regret it. I read this book on the train ride back to Montreal and I loved it.

Prodigal and Riven were on my top ten list of books that I must get at BEA or die trying to get. Thankfully I was able to get a copy but it was so hard to hold off on reading this while I was in NYC because I really wanted to dive in and see what was happening.

I won’t get into to much of a review because I don’t want to give it all away since this is book 2 and 3 in the series.

Prodigal picks up right where Extracted ended. Stein discovered a journal from Tesla on her last mission. She probably wouldn’t have paid much attention to it had it not been for the emblem on the front of it. Its the same emblem she has on her navel. Curious about it she grabs it. She begins to question her past. With a simple blood test it will uncover who she really is. Will this provide her the answer she needs or wants to know?

I love how Prodigal was more about Stein because she was a favorite of mine from Extracted. She is this feisty nothing is going to stand in my way kind of character. She is that strong girl you want to me.

I was so happy that this was actually a flip book because Prodigal ended in a cliff hanger and I couldn’t imagine having to wait for Riven to come out. I probably would have stalked written Sherry and Tyler and begged them for book 3.

Thankfully having Riven on hand I was able to dig right into book 3 because other wise I might have gone ballistic on the train which would not have been good since there was already at least one wack a doodle on the train.

Riven is the extension of Prodigal and it tells Ethan’s side of the story of the events that have just happened. It was nice to discover more about Ethan since not alot of information about him was given. I really like Ethan. He is probably the kind of guy I could see my crushing over. I loved learning about his past and I think it made him who is today.

Riven gives a little bit more information about the time stream and how important is was.

I loved the friendship between Stein, Ethan, Ember, Lex, Nobel, Stills and Sissen. They stuck together and they had each other’s back which is my definition of a true friend. I can’t wait to discover more about these characters because they all have a story to tell.

I don’t know how I am ever going to wait for book 4 to come out. The suspense is killing me.

I loved both of these books and they were so much fun to read. I had to hold myself back from just breezing through the book because I know I could have but I wanted to savour the story and I didn’t want it to end.

If you are a fan of steampunk and/or futuristic then you would probably enjoy these books. I can’t recommend these two authors enough. You will fall in love with their writing style, characters or world. As I was reading this I could only imagine the world they had created.

BEA Recap This Time Last Week (Day 1)

NYCBEAthistimelastweek

I am so behind in writing up my  recap post from BEA but I honestly have to say that I am physically and mentally burned out from the trip. I always have a problem with re-entry back into a normal life. Does anyone else encounter this problem?

I think we are all so high on adrenaline and the excitement of NYC/BEA and lack of sleep that we don’t really realize it at first but it hits on the way back home or even at home.

Anyways lets get on with these recap posts shall we.

amtrak-train

Day one is literally spent traveling. If you travel with me you will discover that I try to get pre-boarding and I always manage to get it. Its not that I don’t like standing in lines but when the line is super long I like to take advantage of a service if its available and it always is.

We pulled out of the Montreal train station at about 10:30 am. The train was packed like it always is and I think its because it was memorial day weekend and everyone was traveling. Thankfully the train ride to NYC was uneventful and we arrrived in NYC roughly around 9pm. We even breezed through customs without a huge delay.

I should mention that I was traveling with Laura from Library of Clean Reads  and i Read Book Tours and her friend Debra and we decided before hand that we were going to share a room.

Our hotel for the next 5 nights was going to be Hotel Pennsylvania. I plan on doing on review of the hotel sometime this week.

I love the train ride down to New York City because of the scenery so I though I would include some photos I took along the way. I think sunsets are my favorite time of the day.

When ever I travel I tend to over pack and this was no exception. Here is what I had at my seat. I ended up buying various magazines to read (Oprah, Marie Claire, Glamour, People, In Style, Life & Style etc) because they are light and fluffy reads, I brought my iPad as well because there are games and ebooks on that (and I actually ended up using it more then I thought I would) I brought my iPod to listen to music, some snack food (just because buying food on the train tends to get a little expensive), hand sanitizer, mints, charger for phone/iPad/iPod and my BEA notes that I wanted to go through so I could plan out my trip. Not shown in the photo was water, ginger ale, cue cards, pens and business cards. You know I couldn’t go to NYC without bringing my owl tote bag.

What do you bring with you when you travel?
