It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? #5

It's Monday! What Are You Reading

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week.  It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog   and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

Jen Vincent, Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee of Unleashing Readers decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join them!

Good Monday morning everyone. I hope you all had a good weekend. I was busy last week with reading the following series and I am happy to say I am half way done it and now I just have to wait for the next six books to come out to complete it.

This weekend I started reading:
I hope you all have a good reading week. Until next week, happy reading.

If We Were Having Tea…. #13

hotcoffee_2

If we were having tea… I would tell you that we wrapped up the tournament last Sunday and the team came in 2nd place and the kids all got a medal and we have a banner to hang in our arena.

2ndplace

If we were having tea… I would tell you that it was another hockey week for us. A game Tuesday night (tied it), a game yesterday (lost by one point) and then this morning we lost. We are now on a break until after Valentine’s day.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that I finally organized my kitchen the way I wanted it to be for quite some time.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that I think in the month of February I am going to do a complete clean of the pantry. I heard about a no buy that certain youtubers I follow are doing. Where basically you buy the essentials in groceries but the focus is using what you already have on had to use up what you have.

If we were having tea... I would tell you that I think I need to do some baking today or this week. We have cut back on the numerous prepackaged goodies we buy because everything is getting so expensive. My plan is to make some freezer cookies so when it comes time and we need them I can just take it out to defrost and bake. Do you do that?

If we were having tea… I would tell you that I think our team in on the way to regionals. We are at 39 points. We have four more regular season games to play but it can go either way. Fingers crossed.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that it was great seeing you again this week and that I can’t wait until next week. I hope you have a good week.

January 2016 Book Unhauling

BookUnhauling

Good  Friday morning everyone. Its that time of the month where I show what books I am unhauling this month. I had so much success last year unhauling books that I thought I would continue this again for 2016.

I decided way back in  January (2015) that I wanted to document how many books I was giving away each month to see if I was making any kind of dent in my book collection.

I know last year I probably brought in more then I was actually giving away so this year I am trying to be cautious with my book buying and I am giving myself a budget each time I go shopping in hopes that it will curb my spending.

So each month I will be posting about what books I am unhauling and then another monthly post will be what books I physically bought in the month.

Are you a constant book buyer? Can you resist buying books on a weekly bases? Please tell me I am not alone in this?

At the end of December 2015 I unhauled a total of 211 books for the year.

To start January off here is what I am unhauling:

  1. And Again by Jessica Chirella
  2. The Readers of Broken Wheel recommend by Katarina Bivald
  3. Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit
  4. First Love by James Patterson and Emily Raymond
  5. A Christmas Hope by Anne Perry
  6. An Amish Noel by Patricia Davids
  7. An Irish Christmas by Melody Carlson
  8. By The Light of the Silvery Moon by Tricia Goyer
  9. Sage and the Journey to Wishworld (Star Darlings series book 1) by Shana Muldoon Zappa & Ahmet Zappa (review in Feb)
  10. Libby and the Class Election (Star Darlings series book 2) by Shana Muldoon Zappa & Ahmet Zappa (review in Feb)
  11. Leona’s Unlucky Mission (Star Darlings book 3)
  12. Vega and the Fashion Disaster (Star Darlings book 4)
  13. Scarlet Discovers True Strength (Star Darlings book 5)
  14. Cassie Comes Through (Star Darlings book 6)

Unless otherwise noted these are books I have read and I am passing them along to another book loving home.

So to start January 2016 off I am releasing  14 books this month.

Total for 2016 is 14
Total for 2015 is 211

Book Spotlight/ Buzz Books Young Adult Spring/Summer 2016

After spotting this book and downloading it from Netgalley I seriously can’t wait for the spring/summer season to come.

I am always so happy when Publishers Lunch put out there Buzz Books for the upcoming seasons especially for the young adult books and that they expanded it to include more books. This is the fourth young adult Buzz Book and I enjoyed reading this and getting the chance to get a sneak peek into the upcoming young adult books that are coming out very soon.

The Buzz Books 2016 Young Adult Spring/Summer edition features 2o exclusive excerpts of new young adult titles. Each title includes the cover of the book, summary and a few chapters. Just enough to suck you into wanting to read the book or books asap.

Just from reading these 20 snippets I have to say that I think this Spring/Summer there is a ton of great young adult books coming out that I am pretty excited to read and honestly I have added them all to my every growing wishlist of books.

The only negative thing I have to say about the excerpts is that I wish the publishers would start off their excerpts with the first chapter and not at chapter 3 etc. Am I the only one who feels the same way?

Here is the list of books that were mentioned:

Review/ Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit

A stunning, literary, and wholly original debut novel set in Poland during the Second World War perfect for readers of The Book Thief.   Kraków, 1939. A million marching soldiers and a thousand barking dogs. This is no place to grow up. Anna Łania is just seven years old when the Germans take her father, a linguistics professor, during their purge of intellectuals in Poland. She’s alone. And then Anna meets the Swallow Man. He is a mystery, strange and tall, a skilled deceiver with more than a little magic up his sleeve. And when the soldiers in the streets look at him, they see what he wants them to see. The Swallow Man is not Anna’s father—she knows that very well—but she also knows that, like her father, he’s in danger of being taken, and like her father, he has a gift for languages: Polish, Russian, German, Yiddish, even Bird. When he summons a bright, beautiful swallow down to his hand to stop her from crying, Anna is entranced. She follows him into the wilderness. Over the course of their travels together, Anna and the Swallow Man will dodge bombs, tame soldiers, and even, despite their better judgment, make a friend. But in a world gone mad, everything can prove dangerous. Even the Swallow Man.    Destined to become a classic, Gavriel Savit’s stunning debut reveals life’s hardest lessons while celebrating its miraculous possibilities.

I received this book for free from publisher/pr firm in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I picked up Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit during BEA 2015. I was drown into the cover when I first spotted it. Its very simple but I think eye catching at the same time.

As I sit here trying to write my review I am still thinking about the book. So I will have to be careful with my review because I don’t want to give the story away and I tend to have a habit of doing that. Don’t you just love it when I book holds onto you?

I went into the book not knowing what was going to happen and reading it I realized it was being told during the war and I wasn’t sure I was prepared for that because I find those kinds of books very difficult to read. I do have to say its not that bad and its really not the focus of the book but you do know a war is happening. I think that is why I enjoyed the story more.

There is quite a few characters in the book but the main are Anna, the Swallow man and then a guy named Reb. I have to say that the Swallow Man and Reb were complete night and day but it worked and it balanced the two of them out and I think despite their differences they were looking for the same thing, acceptance. They both loved Anna and would do anything to protect her.

The book begins in 1939 in occupied Poland. Anna is seven years old. Anna’s father is a linguistics professor and he has to attend a lecture that has been mandated by German authorities and we all know what that means and where this is going. He leaves Anna with a friend of his but when he fails to return home he forces Anna to leave. Anna has no where to go because the door is locked in her apartment and no one will take her in.

On the streets of Krawkow she sees a tall elegantly dressed man who manages to charm Anna when he has a swallow land on his finger. He takes her under his wing so to speak and before long they become traveling partners. The books spans over a few years because we see Anna is growing up.

The Swallow Man taught Anna how to survive and they did and it wasn’t all sugar coated and happy you could see the struggle they endured with sleeping outside in harsh weather conditions, hiding from the enemy, the day to day struggle of blending in when they went into a city and the fight for food and how they would only eat once or twice a day. I think these are all live lessons that saved Anna in the end.

Reading the book you realized how different the world has become. Anna and the Swallow Man were able to cross man borders and patrols with no problems and the only one who had documents was Swallow Man. There was only one point in the book they encountered a problem and that was crossing into Russia but even through the gunfire no one was seriously hurt and they all remained together.

As I was reading I felt like I was traveling with them and I could picture the group traveling together.

For me the ending end like their could possibly be another book but I’m not sure but I would like there to be because I am curious to what Anna is doing and where she ended up along with the Swallow man.

Really want to read:

This one sounds really good and the only thing I didn’t like was the excerpt started on Chapter 3 and then jumped to 23, 24 and then jumped to 38. So I have to admit I didn’t read and I am basing my opinion on the description alone as wanting to read this. (July 12, 2016)

This will be the perfect read. (March 8, 2016)

This one sounds interesting. (May 3, 2016)

This is a reimagining of Jane Eyre that sounds really good. (March 22, 2016)

This one has really peeked my interest. I really want to read this and I think this would be the perfect book to read this summer. (June 14, 2016)

I have to say that at first the cover drew me in but as I read the book description drew me in even more. (February 23, 2016)

This is another book that drew me in by the cover and after reading the book description and excerpt I really want to read this. (June 17, 2016)

This is another one that has peeked my interest. (May 3, 2016) (Debut)

Do any of these books peek your interest?
