Before I begin my review I quickly have to say thank you to Lola’s Blog Tour for allowing me to be a part of this book tour and for the eArc for me to read for my stop today.

This is Shellee Marie’s debut novel and the first book in the Black Beauty in Love series. I really enjoyed reading this and am excited to continue with the series. I should mention that this is currently free to read on Kindle Unlimited in both Canada and the US.

Our main character is Alivia and she is a beauty influencer and entrepreneur who is making her own line of hair care products.

The book begins with Alivia being the best woman at her best friend Dan’s wedding. They have known each other since they were in school together. Now, this is not just any simple wedding with friends and family, no it also includes Dan’s teammates (he is a baseball player) and the media.

With any wedding day, you hope it goes off without a hitch right? Well for Alivia it all falls apart from the get-go. Then one thing leads to another and it’s reported that Dan and Alivia are romantically involved. I guess looking in from the outside you could see that. This doesn’t make Dan’s new wife, Donna very happy and she begins to think that something is going on between the two besties.

Alivia tries to do damage control amidst the negativity so she comes up with a plan. She polls her followers asking who her next date should be and it just happens to be Moe who is a fitness influencer. When the fake dating trope was announced I knew that this wouldn’t go well because what Alivia doesn’t know is Moe’s assistant Travis is helping him out and she can almost spot the difference between the two when it comes to messages. Can they pull this off or will it be another thing for the media to discuss?

Although behind the scenes Alivia and Travis are always together and I loved their interactions. As you read you can’t help but wonder if there is more to this “friendship” than meets the eye. I know as I was reading I was rooting for Alivia and Travis. The chemistry was there instantly. The whole time I was reading I was really surprised they weren’t exposed sooner for as much as they were out in public together.

Will Alivia admit her true feelings to her followers?

I really enjoyed this and definitely can’t wait to continue the series.

Book Review: Sydney & Taylor and The Great Friend Expedition

Book Review: Sydney & Taylor and The Great Friend ExpeditionSydney and Taylor and the Great Friend Expedition by Deborah Hocking, Jacqueline Davies
Published by HMH Books for Young Readers on February 22, 2022
Pages: 80
Goodreads

In this laugh-out-loud early chapter book with charming full-color illustrations, best-selling author Jacqueline Davies follows hedgehog Taylor and skunk Sydney as they set out on an adventure to make new friends, even through doubt and obstacles. Perfect for fans of the Mercy Watson and Owl Diaries series.
Sydney and Taylor have been best friends since before they can remember. But how does one make new friends? Taylor wants to try, so Sydney does what any best friend would do: accompany him on his biggest adventure yet! When sincere compliments and gifts of friendship don't lead anywhere, Sydney and Taylor may need to look where they least expect . . .
This hilarious chapter-book buddy story, illustrated with expressive full-color art, highlights the importance of friendships old and new

I was lucky enough to get an eGalley of Sydney & Taylor and The Great Friend Expedition when I attended PW Book Show (May 2021) and I have to admit that yes I am definitely not the demographic for this super cute middle-grade book but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though I am not the demographic for this book I wanted to read and review this so that I could share it with you my readers who might not know about this series and is looking for the perfect books to give younger family members.

I didn’t realize before this that this actually book 3 in the series when I picked it up and I have to say that I don’t think you necessarily have to read the previous two books to read this one. I know when I read it I never felt like I was missing anything and I honestly thought this was the first book.

Sydney And Taylor Explore The Whole Wide WorldSydney And Taylor Take A Flying Leap

Our two main characters are Sydney (the skunk) and Taylor (the hedgehog) and they are each other’s best friends which I think is absolutely the cutest thing for as long as each other can remember and as the story progresses we discover how they became best friends. Sydney is content to keep it as it is but Taylor wants them to make other friends so that can celebrate holidays, share food, or even have parties with them.

Neither really know how to go about making friends and wonder if other animals will like them. Thankfully Sydney is there to offer support and agrees to them making more friends. So they head outside to see if they can see anyone who wants to be friends with them. They spot a bird, a rabbit, a bat, and a shrew. Not sure what to do or how to do it they decide to start with pleasant conversations only that doesn’t go as planned. What else can Taylor do to get friends because he has tried everything?

Will Taylor and Sydney discover the trick to make friends? To find out the answer you definitely need to read this.

The illustrations by Deborah Hocking are absolutely adorable and that had to be my favorite of the book next to the story of course. I could look at the illustrations all day long.

I definitely would recommend these books. I think kids would get a kick out of reading these,

Review: Home for Christmas

Review: Home for ChristmasHome for Christmas (Christmas Romantic Comedy #3) by Camilla Isley
on February 22, 2022
Goodreads

Would you share a bed with your enemy to save Christmas?

Down with a bad case of writer’s block, Riven has escaped to a mountain cabin for a prolonged writing retreat. The last thing he needs this Christmas is for his family to invade his sanctuary away from LA. What he needs even less is for a family of strangers as large and boisterous as his own to also be stuck in the same house after a double-booking disaster.

Especially when he ends up having to share a bunk bed with Wendy—a gorgeous, feisty New Yorker who quickly learns how to get under his skin.

Sharing a room with her is sweet torture and Riven isn’t even sure what he dreads more: that every passing day brings them closer to saying goodbye or that they have yet another night to spend together…

I recently heard about this trilogy, Christmas Romantic Comedy from a blog tour email I got, and when I looked up the book it sounded really interesting so I went to check them out. The books in the trilogy are Fool Me Twice at Christmas (fake engagement), A Christmas Caroline (Second chance romance), and this one Home For Christmas (enemies to lovers).

These are all stand-alone books. None of the characters are connected in any way.

I would classify this as a winter romance with a sprinkle of Christmas to it.

Our main character Wendy just got news from her sister that their mother who is grieving the loss of her husband doesn’t want to celebrate Christmas and basically wants nothing to do with the holiday. So the sisters decide to book a ski holiday over Christmas. As we all know it’s difficult to book anything close to Christmas and the family is lucky they were able to get a cabin in the woods near a ski resort.

Riven is the renter of this cabin. At first, his plan is just to stay put in the cabin because he is on a deadline to get the draft of his book to the publisher. His sister won’t hear of that and encourages him to come home and spend Christmas with the family. Finally, he caves and decides to head home for Christmas. The real estate company offers him a free month of rent if they can use his cabin. He agrees because heck who wouldn’t want a free month of rent. The only thing is before he can sign the contract his sister calls to say it’s a no-go because the father’s place is flooded and can they go there instead. He informs the real estate to cancel the deal.

The only thing is no one ever canceled and the cleaners show up, the agent shows up, Wendy and her family show up as does Riven’s family. What will happen? Who will stay?

This was a super quick fun read. I read this in one sitting. I love every character in the book except for Wendy’s boyfriend and Riven’s soon-to-be ex-wife. The chemistry between Wendy and Riven was perfect. They were pretty stand-offish to each other but as the week progresses they both begin to warm up to each other. Definitely a slow-burn romance. I loved reading the interactions between the two and you could feel the sparks flying.

After reading this I definitely want to check out Camilla’s other books. If they are anything like this I am sure I will enjoy them.

“I thought they were my best friend…”

There lives a little girl whom you will never know the name of, and for her, a terrible storm is coming. She is going to a new, public middle school knowing no one but her sister, and the horrors are absolutely endless.

But she doesn’t expect what is to come.

In her first few months of school, terrible and unspeakable things begin to happen, that go beyond what is considered “normal”. Finding the courage to get away from the wrong people is a difficult thing, but when a horrific incident occurs, she finds herself running from who she once thought to be friends.

Now lost and alone, The Girl turns to one thing to help her get through her darkest moments. Writing poetry is the one way she can express her anger, and when her school announces that they will be hosting an open-mic night, she knows she has to enter. But entering means that she will have to face her demons, and it could be her worst nightmare…

From a teenaged author, You Won’t Know Her Name shines a light on a heartbreaking reality that often goes unspoken about – the issue that is bullying in middle school. From hateful comments to real, shocking violence, this book shares what cannot be ignored.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to say thank you to Lola’s Blog Tour for allowing me to be a part of this book tour and for the ebook to read for my stop today.

I have to mention right away that You Won’t Know Her Name is told in verse format and it’s a format that I want to read more of this year. I have read a few books in this format over the years. I also have to mention that Shanti mentions right from the beginning that this has a lot of trigger warnings. Each new poem lists the trigger warnings so you will know beforehand what it will discuss. Some of them include verbal abuse, bullying, and assault.

This was a quick but heavy read. Our main character is a young girl who is attending a new school with her sister. Not long into the school year, it begins. At first, it’s little things but then it quickly escalates. She knows she needs to find a new group of friends to hang out with because this is trouble but yet she can’t.

Before long a person she thought was her friend decided to take it to the next level. She knows what this person did is wrong and is brave enough to speak up. To cope with all this our character takes to writing poems. It’s a place she feels comfortable expressing herself. When the school announces they will be hosting an open mic she decides to take part. She knows it will be tough but she is determined to face it head-on.

This definitely hit home for me. It was only when I hit junior high that I started to get bullied. There was making fun and name-calling and no one spoke up or defended me. They always said something when no teacher was around. It was stuff that I had no control over. I always wondered how can kids be so mean to someone. I tried not to let them get to me but it was hard. I didn’t fit in. I felt like a little fish in this huge pond. I never told anyone what was going on because I thought no adult would believe me and they would bully me more if they knew I told someone.

It’s heartbreaking that in this day and age that adults ie teachers/principles/adults still don’t believe a child when they tell them what is going on and if they do they don’t protect the victim.

This is definitely a must-read. I plan on picking up a physical copy of the book very soon.

Book Spotlight/ Owl Diaries

I can’t recall how I stumbled upon the Owl Diaries series because it’s been quite a few years now but I must have spotted it on a shelf at Chapters and flipped through it and instantly fell in love with our main character Eva. These books are an automatic buy and read for me.

Eva is just your typical little owl trying to make it through her day-to-day life and even though she is just an owl she struggles with things and situations like most kids do but with the help of her friends, she manages to get through it.

I know I am not the demographic age for this series since it’s geared towards 1st and 2nd graders but this series is too cute not to pass up and read. The illustrations are bright and colorful in each and every book and they draw you into the story. With its easy to read text with speech bubbles even. The storylines move at a good pace and you always walk away with a little message at the end of each book. Plus an added bonus is at the end of the book there are a few questions that are asked to see how much you remember from reading it and I think that is great because it forces you to remember what you just read. It can also be a conversation starter if a parent is reading the book to a child.

You don’t have to read these in order as each can be read on its own and I highly recommend this series to new readers. I even managed to get a dad who was looking for books for his daughter to pick up a few books in the series as I am sure she will love it.

I personally can’t pick out a favorite because I truly enjoyed them all. Eva is just the cutest owl is she not? To date, there are 16 books in the series (the newest one is called Get Well, Eva) and as of posting this, I should say I don’t see a book 17 yet.

Here are just a few of the books in the series.

Review: Thanks for the Memories

Review: Thanks for the MemoriesThanks for the Memories: A Friends to Lovers Romantic Comedy (Thankful, #2) by Melissa Baldwin
Format: eBook
Published by Independently Published on May 3rd, 2021

Goodreads

A new beginning leads to a second-chance at romance.

Done with the frigid northern winters, Reagan Westbourne has an easy solution—move to Miami. It makes total sense. She can even live with her sister. But after a few months of enduring her quirky sibling's newlywed bliss, Reagan is ready to spread her wings and move out. Life with two fun roommates and a promising job completes the picture for Reagan. Almost.

When Reagan's old college friend, Dante, opens a new restaurant in Miami, the past mixes with the present. Afterall, he's the only man Reagan's ever had feelings for. And it seems the attraction might just be mutual. Yet when their paths finally seem to align, old and new friends enter the picture, leaving Reagan unsure of her feelings.Could this second-chance be the answer, or is it time to leave the memories in the past?

Thanks for the Memories is the second book in the Thankful trilogy. The other books in the trilogy are Thanks for the Love and Thanks for the Friendship. I will be reviewing Thanks for the Friendship on Thursday. So be sure to come back and check that out.

The main character in this one is Reagan. She has been living in Miami with her newlywed sister and is excited to move in with Lila and Gabby. Reagan has also left her hometown and moved down to Miami. She is done with the rigid cold winters and I can totally relate. I am in Canada and I am so done with winter. It’s usually this time of year when I am starting to crave the warmer spring weather and ditch the cold winters. You would think I would be used to it seeing as I grew up on the east coast of Canada but as I get older I just can’t tolerate it anymore.

Anyways back to my review.

I should add that each of these novellas can really be read as a stand-alone but I think you would enjoy them more reading them in order.

As I said this one is about Reagan and her growing crush on her college friend Dante. Dante is also living in Miami and trying to make his restaurant a success. Reagan will use any excuse to go and eat at the restaurant just to see him. She wants there to be more but it seems like Dante doesn’t feel the same way or does he? Will he be able to put himself first or will be put his restaurant first?

Things start to get complicated when someone from Reagan’s past comes to town. She is struggling to remain a good friend and trying to navigate her feelings for Dante. What will she do when she finds out that someone is very interested in her and is willing to make her number one? Is Reagan willing to try it out or will her feelings for Dante prevent her?

I loved that even though this was about Reagan there was still a sideline story going on with Gabby and Lila.

For me personally, I love this trope in romance books, long-time friends turning into lovers. Who doesn’t want that friend you have been crushing on to be much more than just a friend?

This one was definitely a bit longer but yet I still managed to read this in one sitting. I instantly wanted to know more about Reagan and her story. I am definitely excited to read the third and final book.

As well as some challenges and surprises.Gabby's putting her heart and soul into her new career, without the distraction of love getting in the way. Yet she keeps crossing paths with the gorgeous and welcoming Theo Jorgenson. Maybe Gabby could make one little exception and allow Theo in ... except her new roommate and Theo are sworn enemies.Life in Miami could be promising ... or it could fall apart. Again.Fans of the Golden Girls will love this modern, romantic comedy twist!

I recently heard about this trilogy, Thankful from a blog tour email I got, and the books sounded really interesting so I went to check them out. Kindle Unlimited currently is offering the series for free. This is the first book in the trilogy and each of the books features each of the characters. Each one will be the main character in them.

Our main character is Gabby and she has just moved to Miami and is working in her sister-in-law’s sister’s real estate office. After all that she went through all she wanted was a clean start. I was curious as to why Gabby just packed up her life and had to move away and as the story progresses she explains why she did that and I applaud her for doing that.

Gabby starts off by saying that she just wants time to get back to herself, make a name for herself in real estate, and get to know her roommates, Lila and Reagan. She wants nothing to do with men for a while that is until Theo makes an appearance. Will she be able to resist Theo’s charms?

I loved the instant friendship of Gabby, Lila, and Reagan. They were all there for each other. I look forward to reading more of them and getting to know them as the trilogy continues.

This was a super quick and fun read. I devoured this in one sitting and it definitely piqued my interest to want to read the rest of the books and to read more from this author. I think it was just the perfect length to discover Gabby and to get to know her.

I have to say that I could really relate to Gabby because I faced a similar situation. I left my tiny little hometown city and moved to another province, in a bigger city. I was engaged to get married and as time went on I realized that it was not the right thing for me to do. Things were just off. Anyways, things were starting to get nasty and out of control, and to be honest I didn’t feel safe so I made the leap and decided to leave. Thankfully I had my sister where I am now so I wasn’t really going in not knowing anyone.

I was much happier when I moved and started my life all over again. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
