An American girl embarks on a competitive scavenger hunt in England—and along the way, meets up with a bookish British boy who can't help her with the clues . . . but might make the trip take some unexpected turns.

Britt Hanson has always preferred scoring goals on the soccer field to analyzing dusty old books. But when an injury ends her dream to play in college, she jumps at the chance to compete in a scavenger hunt in England that takes her to the locations of classic novels—the prize money would change her life!

There she meets bookish and very British Luke Jackson. He can’t actually help her with any of the clues (against the rules), but something about Luke compels her to invite him to join her. She wouldn’t mind getting to know him—and listening to his accent.

To win, Britt must outwit three smart competitors who aren’t afraid to play dirty while solving clues and traveling around the English countryside. Along the way, Britt learns that sometimes you have to follow the map and other times, you need to throw caution to the wind and see where the cobblestoned road takes you.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank Penguin Random House for graciously providing me with an eGalley of this debut YA contemporary romance.

I did notice on Becky Dean’s website she has announced upcoming titles and they are Picture Perfect Boyfriend (Summer 2023), Heart Overboard (summer 2024), and an untitled book coming in the summer of 2025, Something to look forward to.

I was instantly hooked and couldn’t stop reading this. I mean it contains all of my favorite things, the UK, a scavenger hunt, books, a little romance, a road trip and so much more. I was surprised at how fast I breezed through the book. It was definitely a fun quick read. I would definitely read future books from Becky.

Love & Other Great Expectations is told from the point of view of the main character Britt. Britt and three other classmates (Peter, Spence, and Amberlyn)  are presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity from their English teacher to spend a little over a week in the UK and a chance to win $100.000. The four are going on a literary scavenger hunt all across the UK. They are each assigned a chaperone to shadow them. They must do this on their own with no help from anyone.

The book focuses more on Britt than the other characters. Britt was living the perfect life, she was playing soccer and was accepted into UCLA (one of the best places to go for soccer) on a scholarship until she had an accident that left her to have surgery and to uncover an underlining issue. This has forced her to no longer be able to play again. She hasn’t told anyone yet about this. One thing about Britt is that she is a people pleaser, she doesn’t want to disappoint anyone. Britt knows she needs to win this competition if she wants any chance to go to college. Will this journey make her come clean and reveal what she is hiding and will she decide what to do with herself afterward?

As the book begins there are clues related to books they had read in their English class, that involve works of the classics. I tried to play along and I didn’t do so great mainly because of the classic they mentioned I hadn’t read and after reading this I definitely need to do better. Britt meets Luke at her first clue and they instantly hit it off. Luke is probably every book lover’s dream because he was a reader and enjoyed reading. I loved their interactions throughout the book.

It was interesting to read how everyone around each other and what they would do to win this competition. It just goes to prove that when money is involved anyone and everyone will play dirty to win but does that include Britt?

I was curious throughout the book why the English teacher picked those four students, they were all deserving of it but why them?

Who will win this competition and what will they do with the money?

I think the only negative thing I have to say is that I wish there was more about Amberlyn (they were best friends until grade 6), Peter (someone she knew growing up), Spence, and Alexis (her chaperone). I know they were secondary characters in the book but I would have liked a little more on them.

I love being able to read books with a road trip aspect because given the current situation I am unable to travel like I would love to so this is the next best thing and to add an element to the story I was googling the places they were. Granted it’s not the same thing as being physically there. This is the whole setting of the book is on my bucket list of places to see one day.

Review: Once Upon A Broken Heart

Review: Once Upon A Broken HeartOnce Upon a Broken Heart (Once Upon a Broken Heart, #1) by Stephanie Garber

How far would you go for happily ever after?

For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in true love and happy endings . . . until she learns that the love of her life will marry another.

Desperate to stop the wedding and to heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic but wicked Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.

But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game—and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after or the most exquisite tragedy. . . .

I have to admit that I have yet to read the Caraval series by Stephanie Garber and I own them, so I have no reason not to read them, right? But that will soon be rectified because I am starting the first book, Caraval this week. I should mention that you don’t need to read the Caraval series to read this, which I discovered. This is a companion to the Caraval series. As I was reading I never felt like I was missing something or that anything went over my head. If that make sense?

I have to say one thing I love about Instagram is connecting with other book lovers and having a friendship with them. One person, in particular, mentioned wanting to read Once Upon A Broken Heart and was looking to do a buddy read. I instantly joined because I have been in a group read with her before. I love doing a buddy read or a group read because it’s nice to have someone to talk to about the book. Plus it encourages me to step outside my comfort zone with books.

Once Upon A Broken Heart was definitely outside my comfort zone. As you can probably tell I don’t read fantasy books and I think that’s because I could never get into them no matter how many times I tried, until now. Will I continue reading fantasy? Perhaps, we shall see. I do know that I want to continue reading Stephanie’s books.

Before I begin my review I just have to comment on how gorgeous the cover is. I am also on the hunt for the pink cover edition of this book. If you know me you know I don’t own multiple copies of a book (except my Anne of Green Gables collection) but this I am making the exception for. I know when The Ballad of Never After comes out I plan on buying both cover (purple & black) editions. Does anyone know where I can get the pink edition of this book?

Once Upon A Broken heart is the first book in the series. I absolutely fell in love with the book as I was reading it. Stephanie does an absolutely amazing job with world-building and characters. I was instantly hooked and could barely put the book down. I was surprised at how fast I read it. I think to date that this is the most tabbed and highlighted book that I own.

I should mention that there are a few scenes in the book that were pretty intense and by pretty intense I mean “did it just get hot in here or is it just me”. Nothing is graphic.

I found out that Jacks was a character in the Caraval series so that book follows him. In case you didn’t know Jacks is one of sixteen Fates ( I should mention that all Fates are jealous and possessive) and he is known as the Prince of Hearts.  He is a Fate whose kiss is deadly to all but his one true love. Will he ever find her?

Another main character is Evangeline. She grew up working in her father’s Maximilian’s Curiosities, Whimsies & Other Oddities store. When Evangeline’s mother passed away her father was looking to marry someone because he didn’t want her to be alone. (I instantly got Cinderella vibes here.)

As the book started I loved Evangeline but there were a few times I didn’t like her (if you read the book you might discover those times). She was that girl who grew up believing in fairytales, one true love, and HEA (happily ever afters)  as most of us do, until the guy she loves, Luc announces that he is going to marry her stepsister, Marisol. She is confused because Evangeline and Luc were going to announce they were engaged. What had happened during that time? Has someone put a curse on him?

Evangeline needs to stop this wedding and ends up making a deal with the devil AKA the Prince of Hearts. All he wants in return is for Evangeline to kiss three people of his choosing and he determines where/when they will happen. Figuring she has nothing to lose she accepts because you know Evangeline believes nothing bad could really happen right? But little does she know doing this will put her on a whole other course that will make her rethink things.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this and I definitely want to keep reading future books from Stephanie. The world-building was beautiful the pacing was perfect. There was twist and turns. The characters were perfect. There was a little romance. There were some steamy scenes. What more can you ask for  in a book?

There’s a professional line in the sand. One I refuse to cross. I can’t afford to if I want to keep my secrets safe. To keep my life from falling apart again.

Those boundaries are tested when he moves in across the hall.

My new neighbor might just be the sexiest man I’ve ever seen. He’s also my patient’s brother which is why he’s off limits. But with him this close, I find it hard to ignore my attraction to him. To deny the spark between us. To avoid the magnetic pull I feel.

Because Alex is everything I’ve ever wanted in a man.

Kind and sweet, with a dirty mind and a touch that lights a fire inside me.

And he loves my son.

Which scares me the most.

It’s not just my heart at risk. The closer Alex gets, the more I fall for him, the more I risk exposing everything I’ve worked so hard to keep hidden.

EXCERPT:

“How long has it been since you’ve been with a man?”

I whip my head in his direction, my jaw dropping open. I’m not sure what I was expecting him to ask me, but it wasn’t that.

“That long, huh?” he asks when I don’t reply. Heat from embarrassment rushes into my cheeks.

“No,” I lie.

“That doesn’t answer the question, Harley.”

He practically purrs when he says my name, my insides heating up at the sound of his voice. Damn him. He knows exactly what he’s doing to me, and he’s doing it on purpose.

“A while but probably not as long as you think.”

“When is the last time you were on a proper date? The last time you let loose?”

“Longer than it’s been for you I’m sure. My turn. What—”

“How. Long.” His words are pointed as he scoots closer to me, placing his hand on my thigh. My body heats at his touch, my leg burning like it’s on fire.

“Over a year,” I say, attempting to swallow the lump that’s formed in my throat.

“That’s a damn shame is what that is, Harley. Too long. You should take care of yourself more often.”

He’s propositioning me. I can feel it in my bones. He hasn’t said the words, but the implication is there.

This past year I stumbled upon Rachel’s Random Resources book tours and I am so happy I did because I have been discovering some really good new to me authors and some really good books. Thank you, Rachel. Rachel graciously provided me with the eBook so that I could read it for my stop today.

This was a super quick read that I read in one sitting. Just be forewarned you might want to have a tissue on hand. The beginning is emotional. I will tell you that this book will give you every feeling possible.

This is the 21st book in a 23-book series. I believe all the books are under 200 pages long. After reading this I plan on reading this series as I enjoyed the newest one. Before I begin my review I have to say that I am not sure if each of the books is stand-alone per se or if you need to read the previous ones. So with that being said, I will try to keep my post-spoiler-free just in case.

The main character is Mackenzie and she just moved to Sunnybrook. She is working at the Little Duck Pond Cafe. She is trying to turn her passion for doing pottery into a business of her own. There is so much to Mackenize and the author does a fantastic job in telling it in such a short time.

If you were to look at Mackenzie you would think she has nothing to hide but in reality, she does have a few secrets. Can she keep her secrets hidden?

Then Mackenzie meets Aidan and I have to say Adian sounds like the perfect guy. I loved their interactions. You can see Mackenzie is struggling because she wants to confide in someone but she knows if she does it won’t be good. Can she keep this from Aidan or will he find out?

Will she get the fresh start she has been looking for or will her past come back to haunt her?

I am excited to start this fantastic series and see how it starts and see where it goes.

Trigger Warning: The book contains some scenes of violence and rape which could be distressing to some

About the book:
London, 2035: Dr. Katie Kuznetsov is a tech-savvy, fresh graduate who’s wrestling with Multiple Sclerosis and is starting her climb up the academic ladder. While watching her parents’ marriage fall apart, she’s battling the old-fashion ideas of her analog-loving fiancée, Mark. Katie attempts to spice up her relationship with social media dating. She meets mysterious businessman Aron and leaves Mark for the promise of a perfect relationship. At first, Aron seems like an ideal boyfriend, but his constant disappearances and lack of communication make Katie doubt her sense of self. When Katie discovers his secret, her life splinters into micro-aggressions and lies. In addition, she battles a relapse of Multiple Sclerosis, her parents’ untimely divorce, and the breakdown of her relationship with old friends. Can Katie restore her faith in the integrity of people she meets online and off? Will she be able to piece her life back together and repair her belief in the wholeness of love?

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank Kelly Lacey & Love Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this book tour and for graciously providing me with an eBook of the book to read for my review stop today.

When I received this email about this tour I quickly jumped at the chance mainly because the main character of the book has MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and I have been struggling to find books where there are any main characters with MS. They are few and far between. If anyone happens to know of any please let me know in the comments down below. I am looking for fiction books.

This is the second book in the Seven Kinds of Love series. The first one is The Love Virus which I instantly purchased to read. Not quite sure if this is a dulogy or if there will be more books coming out.

The main character is Katie and she is 28. She was diagnosed with MS when she was 19. So this takes place roughly 9 years later in 2035 in London. Another one of my favorite cities. Since I have yet to read The Love Virus I am not sure how the book ended and since this is the second book I will try not to give too much away.

Katie has graduated with a Ph.D. in psychology and is excited to move forward with her career. She is engaged to her long-time boyfriend Mark. He has been there to help Katie from the beginning. Dealing with and managing MS is not easy on the person who has it and the people who are helping. I can totally relate to this.

Issues start to develop between Katie and Mark. Katie thinks the solution to their problems is spicing things up, Now this is where I think Katie went wrong in the plan because she goes to a dating app. It’s on that app that she meets a man named Aron. Katie basically thinks that Aron is the next best thing to sliced bread. She breaks up with Mark and ignores her friends and family. Think that the grass is greener on the other side, but is it?

I have to admit in the beginning I was thinking that Aron seems too good to be true and I was right because he starts to mysteriously disappear and the lack of communication between them happens. Where is he going and what is he doing? What will Katie do when she uncovers the truth about Aron?

I was instantly hooked and wanted to read, which is a good thing, I thought the pacing was perfect. I pretty much devoured this in a day.

Eleni did a fantastic job with the book and it is so relatable. I am so happy that I grew up when I did, all before social media. I definitely think I would struggle with it had I been growing up in this era. Too many think that what they see online is real. Social media influences people’s perceptions of things and relationships. You might think that so and so has the perfect relationship because that’s what they show online but behind closed doors, it’s a whole other thing. I have heard so many stories of just that, it’s all perfect outside but a nightmare inside.

I definitely would continue this series if more books were to come out.

Blog Tour & Review: Before Takeoff

Book Info:
Before Takeoff by Adi Alsaid
Genre: Young Adult Literary Romance
Publishing Date: June 7, 2022

Synopsis:
The Sun Is Also a Star meets Jumanji when two teens meet and fall in love during a layover-gone-wrong at the Atlanta airport in this thrilling new novel from the author of Let’s Get Lost!

James and Michelle find themselves in the Atlanta airport on a layover. They couldn’t be more different, but seemingly interminable delays draw them both to a mysterious flashing green light–and each other.

Where James is passive, Michelle is anything but. And she quickly discovers that the flashing green light is actually… a button. Which she presses. Which may or may not unwittingly break the rules of the universe–at least as those rules apply to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta.

Before they can figure up from down, strange, impossible things start happening: snowstorms form inside the B terminal; jungles sprout up in the C terminal, and earthquakes split the ground apart in between. And no matter how hard they try, it seems no one can find a way in or out of the airport. James and Michelle team up to find their families and either escape the airport or put an end to its chaos–before it’s too late.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank TBR and Beyond Tours for allowing me to be a part of this book tour and for graciously providing me with an eGalley of the book to read for my review stop today.

I was beyond excited when I was emailed to say that I was going to be on this tour. I have read I think all of Adi’s books and loved them all. I knew this would be another one that I loved and I was correct. I was first introduced to Ali when he attended the very first MTL Ya Fest back in 2018. Hearing him speak about his books I knew then that I wanted to read them all. I definitely think I need to do a reread of them.

I pretty much read this in one sitting because I was instantly hooked and had to see what was going to happen next. This is definitely not like Ali’s previous books.

I have never been to Atlanta but after reading this I definitely want to fly down just to see this airport. I did google for the images and wow is all I can say.

The main characters are James (16 years old) and Michelle (18 years old) and they are both stuck in the Atlanta airport on layovers. They are like night and day but still get along. It didn’t solely focus on them just meeting but also about their lives outside of the airport. This is definitely not a meet-cute kind of book. Although I have to admit I wasn’t sure what to expect and to be honest that is a good thing.

With that being said they spot this mysterious flashing green light, you know right away that this won’t be a good thing. Nothing good can come of a mysterious flashing light. They discover that it’s actually a button. I was thinking NO don’t push it but at the same time, I was like push it. You know they will push it because if they don’t there will be no story.

Well, they did push it and before they can figure up from down strange and weird things begin to happen in the airport. It’s like all hell breaks loose. Each terminal is experiencing a different thing. One terminal is experiencing a snowstorm, another is getting torrential rain and inside is no better because an earthquake happens and a jungle appears. This, of course, freaks people out and they panic trying to get out of the airport and no one can find exits. What would you do if this happened to you during a layover?

I definitely play on picking up a finished copy the next time I order books. I more than likely will do a reread of the book.

Blog Tour & Review: It’s A Widow Thing

Title: It’s A Widow Thing (Book 3 in the Never Too Late Series)
Author: Karen Booth
Pub Date: May 23rd, 2022
Publisher: Independently published
Pages: 218

About The Book:
He’s on the fast track to serious, and she’s hitting the brakes.

When cosmetics entrepreneur Sabrina Kelly waited until she was thirty-eight to marry, she never thought she’d be widowed by forty. Now, two years later, she’s ready for a dip in the dating pool. And Michael, the merciless flirt who lives down the hall, seems like a fun way to get wet. He has “player” written all over him, but Sabrina’s not looking for a love connection. Her heart can’t take more than a fling.

Wall Street mogul Michael Wright has ignored his mom’s pressure to marry for years. But it’s not until he has a health scare that he finally takes stock of his life. If he’s going to settle down, only one woman comes to mind… his gorgeous, whip-smart neighbor, Sabrina. Their chemistry is off the charts. The banter? So. Hot. But while he’s working overtime to woo her, she’s holding back. Can two people running at different speeds get to happily-ever-after together?

This past year I stumbled upon Rachel’s Random Resources book tours and I am so happy I did because I have been discovering some really good new to me authors and some really good books. Thank you, Rachel.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I am on a blog tour for the Never Too Late book and today is my stop on the tour.  The books in this trilogy are: Gray Hair Don’t Care, Brooklyn Monroe Wants it All, and It’s a Wdow Thing.

I was graciously provided with an eArc of the book for my review today.

Even though this is the third and final book in the Never Too Late series, you can read these as stand-alone. Each book involves different characters and storylines. Previous characters do make an appearance in the books.

This is a slow burn, a second chance at love which I am all for. I definitely loved the slow burn because it suited the situation and those involved.

I am going to try and keep my review brief since this is a short story.

The main character is Sabrina a 40-year-old widow who lost her husband unexpectedly just two years into their marriage. Still grieving the loss she struggles to push herself forward to the next part of her life. Sabrina has thrown herself into her thriving makeup company.

Enter good-looking neighbor Michael. He recently had an accident that has him thinking he needs to rethink his life from a player to a more serious thing. He wants to settle down and start a family. He is ready for this next stage in his life. He knows life is too short.

Sabrina and Michael live on the same floor and most mornings they both ride the elevator together. You can tell they both enjoy those mornings. They are enjoying the time getting to know each other and flirting a little bit. You can almost feel the chemistry between them. Then out of the blue Michael kisses her and asks her out. This excites Sabrina and she agrees and then gets into her head thinking that it’s all wrong, it’s too soon. She feels bad because she thinks she is disrespecting her late husband, although I am sure he would want her to move on with her life. Will Sabrina go on this date?

I love how patient and caring Michael was with Sabrina. He knows not to push her.

Will Sabrina take a leap of faith or will she lose her chance at a happily ever after?

I can actually say that I fall into the demographic for this book. I am around the same age as the main character in the book. I really enjoy reading books where I know I can relate to the main characters. Even though this is fiction it’s really relatable.

This was a pretty quick read (less than 220 pages) that I managed to read pretty much in one sitting. Once I started I didn’t want to stop. I love the cover and I love that it takes place in one of my favorite cities, New York.

I definitely want to read future books by Karen and I definitely want to read her backlist titles.
