EXCERPT:

Shaded under the dim porch light, Shami sits outside in a black jacket at a picnic bench near his apartment. He’s surrounded by a few friends but stands out as he is a good head taller than those around him. I’m confident as I saunter toward him in leather pants and strappy wedge sandals that highlight my long legs. My jacket is unzipped, exposing my lace-trimmed tank top. A bathroom run before leaving the bar showed my long hair remained under control, no frizz.

“How was the bar?” he asks.

“Good, you should have joined me there.” I run a hand through my hair for show.

“No car.” He smiles sweetly.

“So sad.” I grin. The two cans of hard cider leave me less than drunk but give me a bit of an edge. I feel good, which usually leads to trouble, and consider switching to beer. I hate the taste, so I’ll drink less and remain more in control. Small talk swims like a school of minnows as we catch up.

I pose the question I really want the answer to, and I realize why I need the hard cider. “What happened after our date?” I really mean, “Why didn’t you text me?” He squirms over, and his movement reminds me of a caterpillar. I work hard to stifle my giggle.

His hand finds my leg. “I had to go to Israel and was traveling.”

“Really? You couldn’t text from there? Or once you got back?”

“I guess I should have. Sorry.”

Silence invades for long seconds. I’m out of conversation topics and sobering up. I close my eyes as the brisk night air pushes against my cheeks. I hear the bench squeak as we adjust ourselves on the uncomfortable wood seats. I taste the awkwardness of the moment in my mouth. Finally, we throw out questions to each other to cover the disconnect.

Shami stands and stretches. “You have a car, right?”

“Yes.” I’m reluctant to say more, realizing where this is heading.

“Let’s go for a ride.” His white teeth shine in the darkness.

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea. I’ve had a couple drinks.”

“I haven’t. I’ll drive. Plus, it’s super close.” He holds out his hand. I hesitate, but then dig through my purse and hand him the keys, already understanding I’ll hate myself in the morning for doing this. We take off. I’m relieved Shami is a capable driver, but I smell his excessive cologne. To my overstimulated senses, it reeks. The fact he is in control of my car makes me feel like a cornered animal, yet I did this.

I’m confused when we enter the dark parking lot at McDonalds. Shami cruises into a spot in the far corner away from the entrance. An awkward silence ensues as he remains in his seat. With the heat blasting, the interior of my tiny Toyota Matrix warms quickly, and my leather pants stick to my skin. Shami takes his jacket off, revealing a gray T-shirt underneath. His hand slithers to my thigh, and I ask myself where the polite, sweet college student who held the door for me at the Hookah lounge has gone and who has replaced him.

“What are you doing?” I ask as I remove his hand from my leg, placing it none-too-gently on his side of the car.

“That’s why we’re on this date, right? You want to hook up, right?” He touches various parts of his own body.

“I see the way you’ve been appraising the Shami. You want this.” The muscles under his T-shirt flex.

Now I’m repulsed. His third-person reference to himself sounds stupid, conceited, and immature. “What I want is to get to know you.” I eye the McDonald’s sign and wonder if “The Shami” takes all his super-fun dates here.

“You got me. I’m the best thing at the Connecticut Central State College.” He leans over and tries to kiss me. I give him my cheek and then jerk back.

“I’m beginning to doubt that.”

“You’re not giving away any sugar?”

I feel my eyes bug out, wide open. “Here in the parking lot? Are you kidding me? Who does that?”

His cocky expression sours. Clearly, he knows I’ve called him a male slut because he seems to like lurking in dark corners of fast food joints. “You’re turning out to be a drag. Man, I’m hungry.” He focuses on the building. Shami opens his car door, and the scent of fries wafts through the air. Without a word, he leaves me in the passenger seat. I wait, unsure of what to do. I want to leave. Unfortunately, he took my keys with him. The jerk. The hopeful part of me perks up. Maybe this date will be salvageable. He probably darted inside to get us milkshakes.

I’m almost correct. Shami arrives with a milkshake, fries, and quarter pounder for himself. I watch as he devours them. My stomach growls.

“That put me in a good mood,” he says as he finishes his food. His snake-like hand embraces my arm, but I am certain he was aiming for another part of my anatomy. He squirms closer. I scoot away, my butt colliding with the door. He doesn’t notice. I attempt to avoid him as he angles in for a beef and onion-flavored kiss. It’s sloppy at best. I shove him away.

My stomach growls again. “We could go out for drinks and dinner?”

“I just ate.”

I smell the pickles and special sauce as he talks, his lips transforming into a dour frown. “Listen, if this isn’t happening tonight, I think I’m going to hang with the boys.”

“I think that’s an excellent idea.”

We drive home in silence. In the parking lot, he hands me my keys and heads off without a backward glance. I sit in the car, stunned, and realize I get to look forward to an entire year of running into him in the complex and on campus. My life is just one happy merry-go-round of fun. As I make my way back to my apartment, I felt a cool breeze on my thigh. I gaze down to witness the long split in my leather pants. All I want now is to inhale some left-over veggie Pad Thai, curl up under my comforter, and cry. The crazy part? This isn’t the worst date I’ve been on.

To Be Read in September 2018

This is my fourth month doing this and so far I think I am doing okay but its hard because I  am really not good with having a set  TBR list because half the time I tend to be a picky reader or I don’t really like  the books I have picked out half way through the month.

So what I plan on doing is picking a handful of books each month that I want to read and if I read them then that is good and no pressure if I don’t read them. The ones I don’t read I will put on paper and put in my TBR jar to pick when I am stuck for something to read.

So, for September  I am aiming to read the following books:

  1. The House of 1,000 Eyes (blog tour)
  2. The Ghost Road (blog tour)
  3. Love and Other Secrets by Christina Madelski (blog tour)(currently reading this about 10% into it)
  4. All The Things That Could Go Wrong by Stewart Foster
  5. Rule by Ellen Goodlett
  6. The Exes’ Revenge by Jo Jakeman
  7. Two Summers by Aimee Friedman
  8. The Rock Star in Seat 3A by Jill Kargman
  9. Girl, Stolen by April Henry
  10. An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena ( I actually finished this Sept 2nd)
  11. Vox by Christina Dalcher (currently reading this)

To break down the list, the first three are for blog tours that I have coming up this month, the next three are review books for the month and then the next three books are books I have selected from shelves and this is my attempt to read more of my own books so the three books are  books: bought this year, a stand alone and a first book in a series and finally the last two are books I was currently reading at the end of August.

What are you reading this month?

Sundays In Bed With

This is being hosted by two of the sweetest people I have the privilege of knowing in real life, Kate and Kim. Sadly we don’t talk like we use to because you know real life happens but there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of them both.

Good Morning Everyone. I hope everyone had a good week. Well its hard to believe but we just wrapped up our last long weekend of Summer 2018. Where did the time go?

Its been an emotional week/weekend because not only has Michael started grade 10 but this weekend we got together with my family to do a memorial dinner for my mom. Its hard to believe its been 3 years already. So I am hoping that today will be a low key day but I don’t think it will be. Don’t you wish sometimes you could just hide away from the world and just chill?

This week I am currently reading:

An Unwanted GuestVox

I am almost done with An Unwanted Guest (I have roughly 100 pages left so that will be done this morning) and the Vox is almost done as well (hoping to get that done at some point either today or tomorrow)

This week I need to read these two books because I am on blog tours for them:

The Ghost RoadLove and Other Secrets (First Kiss Hypothesis)

If time permits I am hoping to read this because its coming out this week:

All The Things That Could Go Wrong

This past week I managed to pull a few books from my TBR and read these:

Sacking The QuarterbackBodyguard: An Under Covers Story

The Sandman and the War of DreamsThe Man in the Moon

Monster MayhemThe Curvy Tree: A Tale From The Land Of StoriesOwl Diaries #9: Eva's Big Sleepover: A Branches Book

Review/ Owl Diaries Series

I can’t recall how I stumbled upon the Owl Diaries series because its been some time now but I must have spotted it on a shelf at Chapters and flipped through it and instantly feel in love with our main character Eva. These books are an automatic buy and read for me.

Eva is just your typical little owl trying to make it through her day to day life and even though she is just an owl she struggles with things and situations like most kids do but with the help of her friends she manages to get through it.

I know I am not the demographic age for this series since its geared towards 1st and 2nd graders but this series is too cute not to pass up and read. The illustrations are bright and colorful and draw you in to each and every page. With its easy to read text with speech bubbles even. The story lines moves at a good pace and you walk away with a little message at the end of each book. Plus a added bonus at the end of the book there is a few questions that are asked to see how much you remember from reading it and I think that is great because it forces you to remember what you just read.

You don’t have to read these in order as each can be read on its own and I highly recommend this series to new readers. I even managed to get a dad who was looking for books for his daughter to pick up a few books in the series as I am sure she will love it.

I personally can’t pick out a favorite because I truly enjoyed them all. Eva is just the cutest owl is she not? To date their is only 9 books in the series and the 10th is coming out in 2019.

Title: *Going Down Easy*
Author: Erin Nicholas
Release Date: August 28, 2018
Publisher: Montlake Romance

As far as flings go, single dad Gabe Trahan is pretty sure that Addison Sloan is his best bet. Once a month, Addison comes to New Orleans and then…It. Is. On. Until Addison returns to New York, it’s just hot, happily-no-strings-attached sex. And beignets. And jazz. But lately for Gabe, it isn’t nearly enough.

Sure, maybe Addison’s gotten a bit hooked on Gabe. After all, who can resist a guy who’s so sexy, so charming, and so…available? But maybe he’s too available for her right now. Addison’s just moved to New Orleans, and relationships are definitely off the table. Besides, guys always bail when they learn her secret: she’s a single mom.

Only Gabe’s not running. Worse, he’s thrilled. But Addison never signed up for ever-after romance, and Gabe won’t settle for anything less. Now it’s a battle of wills—and when it comes to the woman he’s falling for, Gabe isn’t above playing a little dirty.

Gabe had sent her flowers.

Addison stood staring at the gigantic bouquet of white flowers sitting on the desk she was using for the day.

“These are magnolias, right?” she asked Elena.

“They are. The state flower of Louisiana.” Elena stroked the petal of one of the gorgeous flowers.

“Someone knows your weakness for all things New Orleans.”

He definitely did. Addison hadn’t even needed to read the card to know who the flowers were from. Gabe knew she was a sucker for anything that was traditionally associated with the city. Beignets, bourbon, masks, beads, gas lanterns, and balconies with looping wrought iron railings. For six months he’d been taking her out on the Sunday she was in town and letting her soak up the city. And now she’d gone from associating those things with New Orleans and the unique spirit of the city to associating them with him.

But why was he sending her flowers? That was new. So far, their routine was she showed up at the bar on Saturday night, they spent the weekend together, she left on Monday morning, and then thirty days later, they repeated it all over again. There was no contact in between times. No texts or calls—they didn’t have each other’s number. No letters or gifts—he didn’t have her address. And definitely no flowers.

“See you soon, Gabe,” Elena read from the card. She lifted her eyes, meeting Addison’s. “Gabe? Who’s Gabe?” Then her eyes widened. “Wait. These aren’t from Gabe *Trahan*, are they?”

*Oh, crap*. Addison took a deep breath, thought briefly about lying, and then realized there was no real reason to not tell her friend the truth. “Yes.”

Elena’s eyes widened, almost as if she hadn’t expected that answer. “Really? You’ve seen him since that first night?”

Addison rounded the desk and set the folder she was carrying on top of the nearest stack, straightening the pile of already straight files. “Yes,” she said simply. The fewer details she offered, the better, probably.

“When?” Elena asked. “I had no idea you’d seen him again.”

And then it hit Addison . . . Elena wasn’t just her friend anymore. She was Addison’s boss. Was this going to reflect badly on her? Was a just-when-she-was-in-town affair something Elena would frown upon?

“I didn’t think it was important to mention. We just . . . went out a couple of times.”

They had. They’d gone out to Preservation Hall for jazz. They’d gone to Café du Monde for coffee and beignets. They’d gone to the French Market. They’d gone to Gabe’s bedroom. And his shower. And his kitchen table. And his balcony . . .

“You’re *dating* Gabe Trahan?” Elena asked, planting her hands on her hips.

“No,” Addison said quickly.

“Not dating. We’ve had . . . drinks when I’ve been in town.” And many, many orgasms. And laughs. And fun.

“Which time?” Elena asked.

“Which time what?”

“Which time that you were in town did you have drinks?” Addison sighed.

“Each time.”

“You’ve seen him *every* time you’ve been in town since you met him?” Elena asked, clearly shocked.

“Yes. But,” Addison added before Elena could go on, “it’s nothing serious. It’s been . . . a fling. Just a little fun. No big deal. And”—she took a deep breath—“this weekend was the last time. Now that I’ve moved here, I won’t be seeing him anymore.”

Saying it out loud made her heart clench even harder than it had when she’d driven away from him that morning.

*Wooing a Woman: New Orleans Edition with Erin Nicholas*

My newest book, *Going Down Easy,* is a hot, contemporary romance set in one of the sexiest cities in the country: New Orleans. I’ve loved New Orleans since my first visit there in 2011 and have been back *multiple* times. I fall more in love with the place every time I’m there. There’s just something about the city that I can’t explain but that keeps me coming back. The music, the history, the laid-back attitude, the food…there’s just so much to love. So finally, the right characters and stories came along and it was time to write a series set there. Here’s a little bit about my characters and book…

Gabe Trahan: dirty-talking, charming, and a little bit sweet bar owner in the French Quarter. Has lots of friends and close to his family. Has a slow, sexy drawl, panty-melting grin. And a son, Cooper, who is five years old.

Addison Sloan: restoration architect who comes to New Orleans from New York City once a month to consult on a new project with a local firm. Confident, independent (very), smart, sassy. Loves dirty-talk in a slow Louisiana drawl. And jazz. And beignets. And pralines. And pretty much anything related to New Orleans. She’s also a single mom to five-year-old Stella.

How they meet: Addison comes into Gabe’s bar with a friend. The chemistry is immediate. And Addison’s love for New Orleans is obvious. Even the mention of beignets makes her eyes sparkle, she melts when she hears jazz, she loves the café au lait, the horse-drawn carriages—just everything. Gabe’s never been much of a romantic, but suddenly he wants to get that sexy, sweet look on her face as often as possible. (You can actually read all about this in “Easy Going”, the prequel novella! Check out Goodreads to find it 🙂

So whenever Addison is in town they go to jazz clubs, eat all the traditional New Orleans dishes—gumbo, crawfish, pralines—and they take in everything about the city. And Addison gives him a new appreciation for his home town. Though, their favorite place is definitely the balcony on the apartment above Gabe’s bar. For lots of reasons 😉 (Did I mention the prequel novella? “Easy Going”. Goodreads).

Then, everything changes. Addison is moving to New Orleans to take a permanent job with the firm…and she has no time or energy or interest in a full-blown, all-the-time, same-city relationship.

But Gabe’s not giving up.

He has every intention of using Addison’s weakness for New Orleans and the south “against” her in a huge play for her heart. So how does he do it? Read on for hero Gabe Trahan’s Seven EASY(ish) Steps To Woo A Woman in New Orleans:

*Step #1*

Start off with reminding her of the sweet stuff about being with you in New Orleans. Send a basket of pralines and Magnolias. Be romantic. Do not mention dirty stuff on the card. Probably.

*Step #2*

Turn up the heat. Send her some beignets and an extra bag of powdered sugar to remind her of the night on your balcony where lots of other things ended up with sugar on them. Maybe mention the dirty stuff on the card now. Or again.

*Step #3*

Invite her on a horse-drawn carriage ride around the Quarter. Make it impossible for her to say no by sending the invite with a bottle of Pimm’s No. 1 and tell her that there’s going to be a parade at the end. She can’t resist a parade.

*Step #4*

Have your mutual friends suggest a night out on the town to her and then surprise her by joining them at Preservation Hall for the jazz show. Make sure you show up just before it starts. There’s no way she’ll yell at you when she can be listening to jazz. She’ll very likely let you stand really close and wrap your arms around her like you’ve done all the other times she’s heard a jazz trumpet. You can say some dirty things in her ear here. For sure.

*Step #5*

A few days later, send her a book about alligators. Make sure it’s something her five-year-old daughter will be interested in. A coloring book with alligator trivia would be perfect. Insert a brochure for a swamp boat tour in the book. Text her the next day and suggest you all go on the swamp boat tour together.

*Step #6*

After a day in the sun on the bayou with your kids, invite her to a masquerade ball. Be sure to mention it’s at a plantation. And that she gets to wear a ball gown. And a mask, of course. And that there will be mint juleps. She’ll be putty in your hands. This is your chance to do a few dirty things.

*Step #7*

In the end, even if some of the other stuff has failed, use the Ace up your sleeve. Show up on her doorstep with a pot of your grandma’s gumbo and tell her that you’re madly in love with her and that if she’ll let you in, she’ll be able to have that gumbo regularly for the rest of her life. No one can say no to grandma’s gumbo.

Excerpt:
Zade moved so he stood just slightly in
front of me as if protecting me. Odd. Did I need protection from Jase? “Just
making sure our little gem doesn’t get herself in trouble.” Zade cocked his
head to the side. “Isn’t that what we agreed on?”
The tranquility-breathing dragon stood
inside the arched doorway, glaring at Zade with a mean scowl—his eyes so dark
they almost appeared black. “Yes, but that doesn’t include you seducing her.”
“Since when do you meddle in my
extracurricular activities?” Zade challenged him, with an edge to his voice.
It was my turn to frown. I was no one’s
extracurricular activity.
A growl rose up in Jase’s throat. He
stormed to where Zade and I where awkwardly standing. “She’s off limits.”
Golden God’s lips formed into a tight
line. “You forget, Jase, you’re not king. There is no single ruler of the Veil
anymore.”
Things had escalated quickly, and I
didn’t want these two going into the dragon ring over me. “Hey!” I yelled,
stepping between the two. Not the brightest of ideas, but at the moment, it was
all I could think to do. I didn’t want blood spilled over me.
A muscle began to thump in Jase’s jaw.
“Keep your lips off her.”
Spreading my arms out wide between them,
my hands flattened on their chests. “Okay. First off, I can kiss whomever I
want.”
Jase’s glower deepened.
I rolled my eyes. This was ridiculous.
Framing Jase’s face with both of my hands, I rose up on my toes and planted one
on him, just to prove a point. The joke was on me.
The moment our lips met, all annoyance
vanished from within me. My eyes fluttered closed as I fell into the blissful
storm that was all Jase. His lips were soft… and skilled, expertly moving over
mine. His hands came up to cup either side of my cheeks, and he deepened what
was supposed to be a peck. My mouth opened, letting him in, and a purr sounded
at the back of my throat as his tongue swept inside.
I’d never been kissed like this
before—so passionately and fervently. My fingers bunched his shirt, holding him
in place just in case he got any ideas about pulling away. I wasn’t done yet.
Honestly, I never wanted to stop kissing Jase Dior.
Zade cleared his throat behind us. How
had I forgotten about him? Jase pulled back, his breath as ragged as mine.
I glanced up into his eyes, seeing the
violet in them glowing brightly. “There. Are you satisfied?” I rasped,
swallowing a knot of yearning. No more kissing dragons.
“Not nearly.” Jase’s head dipped as if
he was going to take possession of my lips again.
My hand pressed against his chest,
keeping him just out of reach. “Oh, no. I think I’ve kissed enough dragons
today.” I could barely believe I had locked lips with two of them within
minutes of each other.
What is wrong with me?
