Ghosts, a family curse, buried secrets -- and two girls who have to figure it all out. A new book from an acclaimed author, for fans of Coraline, Doll Bones and The Night Gardener.
For the first time, Ruth is heading to Newfoundland to stay with family she's never met instead of spending the summer traveling with her dad. When she arrives, she finds Newfoundland is very different from her life in Toronto--people there are much more friendly, but also superstitious, believing in ghosts and The Sight and family curses. Ruth's cousin Ruby is also staying for the summer, and the two discover they have a lot in common: they both lost their moms when they were two years old, they're the same age and they even like the same food. But while Ruby believes in spirits and fairies, Ruth believes in science and cold, hard facts.
When they find ominous information on some tombstones in the local cemetery, Ruth and Ruby start investigating their family's past and discover that twin girls are born in every generation, and every set of twins dies young, leaving their children without mothers. What's more, one of the twins always has The Sight and can see the Ghost Road that leads to the mysterious lost settlement of Slippers Cove. What happened there? What does it have to do with their family? And who is the ghostly presence that keeps visiting Ruth late at night?
The answers lie somewhere along the Ghost Road . . . if they can only find it.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank Penguin Random House Canada for sending me a arc of The Ghost Road to read and for allowing me to be a part of this book tour.

Earlier this summer I was asked if I wanted to be a part of this blog tour and after reading the synopsis I knew I wanted to read it because I am attempting to read more Canadian authors (and promote them) plus this takes place in Newfoundland (sadly I have never been and don’t know why since I grew up in New Brunswick) and because this sounds like it will be a fun and exciting read.

The Ghost Road is a middle grade story and I have to say that when I started to read it I don’t know what to expect so let me say that I was pleasantly surprised. This does not read like a middle grade read. I was instantly sucked in. Charis’s writing is beautiful. This is definitely suited for all ages in my opinion.

The more I looked at the cover the more I started to love it and I have to say that this was one of those arc’s I fell in love with. The pages were different from any other arc I have read. The whole arc was smooth. I know that this has nothing to do with the review but I just have to say it. LOL

Ruth is  our main character (the story is told in her point of view)  and she is spending her first summer (she lives in Toronto) away from her father (who is on his honeymoon with his new wife) since her mother has passed away in Newfoundland with family she didn’t really know anything about until now. Ruth was very young when her mother passed away. There is so much about Ruth’s mother that comes to a surprise to her but she embraces this new found knowledge and is curious about not only this new found family but about the folk lore of Newfoundland as well. My heart broke for poor Ruth because as the story progresses Ruth realizes there is so much about her mother that she had no clue about. Its like her mother was secretive for a reason but why?

I mentioned that there was so much about Ruth’s mother that Ruth didn’t know about so imagine her surprise when she learns that her cousin Ruby looks exactly like her and I wanted to know how that was. Ruby knows so much about the family and history. This is where I began to be instantly sucked into the story. I am sure I was just like Ruth shocked at what I was learning about the whole family and this is what made it interesting. So many questions kept popping up in my mind as I was reading.

This was definitely a fantastic read for me this week and I pretty much devoured it in a two day span. If I could have stayed up all night reading it I definitely would have. The chapters are short and the pacing is perfect just enough action and suspense to keep you reading.

I have never been to Newfoundland so I can’t attest to the climate or what it looks like but Charis described it in what I imagine Newfoundland to be like and from what I heard. She made it sound eerie and beautiful at the same time. This is the perfect book to curl up on the couch with on a damp rainy day.

I know I say I normally don’t reread books but this is definitely one that I will have to reread again.

I quickly have to thank MaryAnn from Chapter by Chapter Blog Tours for allowing me to be a part of the book tour for Love and Other Secrets by Christina Mandelski. I was graciously provided with a eARC to read for my review today.

I just have to say that Entangled Crush has the best young adult books. I have enjoyed each and everyone that I have read. They are super cute and such fun quick reads. I wish I would have had these when I was a teen.

Alex and Bailey are “secret” friends. They hang around outside of school. Alex is a lacrosse player for the high school team. He is also cute, popular and rich. Bailey is the exact opposite. She works two jobs and lives in a travel park. She is by far not a rich popular girl.

We learn fairly early that Bailey wants to be a film producer and is working hard to achieve that (she has her life planned out) while Alex is sort of laid back and no goals or ambitions in life.

The book opens up one month before prom and Alex has decided the only person he wants to go to prom with is Bailey and for the first time he is doing the asking and that is a big deal to Alex because in the past its always been the girl asking Alex to the prom. He is all set to ask her when she blurts out that she needs Alex’s help to do a promposal because he is the Love Guru and if anyone knows anything about promposal its Alex.

Alex decides to struggle through it and help Bailey with the promposal even though its killing him inside. He wants Bailey to be happy but he always wants Bailey. Will all go according to plan or will this blow up in their faces?

Looking back at my prom (many, many, many years ago) you realize how quickly things have changed. I mean back them you either asked or the guy asked, nothing fancy like it is today. How was it when you went to prom?

I really enjoyed reading this and devoured it in one sitting. I will definitely be checking more books out by this author. It was a super fun and cute read. The perfect book to get lost in for a few hours and dream about or think about prom.

Review/ Baker’s Magic

Review/ Baker’s MagicBaker's Magic by Diane Zahler
Published by Capstone Young Readers on February 1, 2017
Goodreads

Bee is an orphan, alone in a poor, crumbling kingdom. In desperation, she steals a bun from a bakery. To Bee's surprise, the baker offers her a place at his shop. As she learns to bake, Bee discovers that she has a magical power. When a new friend desperately needs her help against an evil mage, Bee wonders what a small orphan girl with only a small bit of magic can do. Bee's journey to help her friend becomes a journey to save the kingdom, and a discovery of the meaning of family.

I love when books happen to find their way into my hands and into my heart.  “Baker’s Magic” by Diane Zahler in one such book.  I do not remember how I came upon this novel, but I am glad that it found a home amongst my bookshelves.

The novel situates the reader in a kingdom run by a disgruntle and powerful wizard who has control over all the land.  Add an orphan, a princess, a boy, pirates, wizards, a baker, a hedgehog, and you have the makings of a great story.

Absolutely starving, Bee finds herself in a bakery, stealing a sticky bun before she even knows what she is doing.  From this beginning, Bee is offered a place to call home, learns to trust in others, and discovers that she has a wee bit of magic in her.  Just enough that her baking absorbs this magic and it can then be shared with others.  Very useful when you are trying to save a princess, rescue her father, the king, while negotiating with pirates, and battling with wizards.

Throughout this incredible journey, Bee discovers what family is all about and learns the true meaning of the word, home.  A wonderful novel for both boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 13.  A yummy recipe is included at the end of the story, to help you create a little baker’s magic of your own.  A must read for those who love one adventure after another.

Can’t Wait Wednesday

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here, at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.
If you’d like to join in, you can use the image above, the one below, or make your own. Please link back to Wishful Endings in your post and also add it to the linky widget posted each week so we all can come see what you’re excited about. If you’re continuing with the Waiting on Wednesday feature, feel free to link those up as well!
This week I actually have three books on my Can’t Wait Wednesday post because I literally just heard about this series.

The Architect of Song

Book 1. A lady imprisoned by deafness, an architect imprisoned by his past, and a ghost imprisoned within the petals of a flower – intertwine in this love story that transcends life and death.

For most of her life, Juliet Emerline has subsisted – isolated by deafness – making hats in the solitude of her home. Now, she’s at risk to lose her sanctuary to Lord Nicolas Thornton, a mysterious and eccentric architect with designs on her humble estate. When she secretly witnesses him raging beside a grave, Juliet investigates, finding the name “Hawk” on the headstone and an unusual flower at the base. The moment Juliet touches the petals, a young English nobleman appears in ghostly form, singing a song only her deaf ears can hear. The ghost remembers nothing of his identity or death, other than the one name that haunts his afterlife: Thornton.

To avenge her ghostly companion and save her estate, Juliet pushes aside her fear of society and travels to Lord Thornton’s secluded holiday resort, posing as a hat maker in one of his boutiques. There, she finds herself questioning who to trust: the architect of flesh and bones who can relate to her through romantic gestures, heartfelt notes, and sensual touches … or the specter who serenades her with beautiful songs and ardent words, touching her mind and soul like no other man ever can. As sinister truths behind Lord Thornton’s interest in her estate and his tie to Hawk come to light, Juliet is lured into a web of secrets. But it’s too late for escape, and the tragic love taking seed in her heart will alter her silent world forever.

International and NYT bestselling author, A.G. Howard, brings her darkly magical and visual/visceral storytelling to Victorian England. The Architect of Song is the first installment in her lush and romantic Haunted Hearts Legacy series, a four book New Adult gothic saga following the generations of one family as – haunted by both literal and figurative ghosts – they search for self-acceptance, love, and happiness.

The Hummingbird Heart

Book 2. Shortly after escaping a circus tragedy, young Italian orphan, Willow Antoniette, seeks refuge at The Manor of Diversions–a holiday resort in England born of a ghost story. For eleven years, she’s raised alongside the children of the resort’s owners: Julian, his twin brother, Nick, and their younger sister Emilia. Now that Willow is of marriable age, she’s determined to escape finishing school along with everyone’s efforts to make her a proper lady. The only man she wants to spend her life with is Julian, after all. Yet how can she tell him, when he thinks of her as nothing but a friend?

As a machinist and engineer, Julian Thornton prefers a governable life. He can’t allow his ever-deepening attraction for Willow to distract from his amusement park plans to lure a younger, wealthier clientele to their family’s resort. In hopes to escape Willow and find investors, Julian sets off on a transatlantic ocean liner headed for the St. Louis World’s Fair, unaware Willow has secretly stowed away on the same ship.

A tiny, mute orphan named Newton and a pair of haunted Italian shoes bring Willow and Julian face to face on deck. Forced to work together to solve the mystery of Newton and his vindictive, ghostly companion, Julian and Willow can no longer fight their untapped passions. However, time to admit their true feelings is running out, for the ghost and her murderer have enlisted them as unsuspecting pawns in a karmic game of cat-and-mouse that could cost all of them their lives.

The Glass Butterfly (Haunted Hearts Legacy Book 3)

Book 3. For close to a decade, twenty-five-year-old Felicity Lonsdale has masqueraded as a dowager almost twice her age—selling caterpillars to butterfly consortiums—enabling her to hide an ill-fated past while raising her late brother’s daughters. Together, the three live on an isolated Irish estate bequeathed by a dying earl. When the earl’s estranged son arrives to claim his inheritance by threatening to expose Felicity’s true identity, she longs to pack up her nieces and run. But a ghostly secret within the castle’s turret holds her captive.

Nick Thornton—a Roma viscount’s heir—is also captive. After a tryst with an investor’s wife nearly destroyed his family’s holiday resort, Nick forsook everything to elope with her. However, a tragic mistake at his hand led to her and his baby’s deaths. Refusing to turn to the family he shamed, Nick travels to seek the countess who once co-wrote a romance with his sister. There’s rumor of a special butterfly in her keep—a transparent-winged species with ties to the afterlife. Nick hopes to contact his dead wife and child, convinced only their forgiveness can free him.

Upon his arrival to Felicity’s estate, Nick offers to help her defeat the earl’s son, on the condition she allow Nick to investigate her glass butterflies. Felicity agrees, though fears the closer he gets to the ghosts of his past, the closer he’ll come to uncovering her own. As Nick spends time with Felicity and her nieces, he realizes the mystery enshrouding this fragile countess and her castle is more intriguing than the ghosts he originally came to find. And perhaps putting his dead to rest and helping her do the same will be his true path to redemption.

Stain
Stain is coming out January 2019. This is not a part of the above series but I just had to include it here. How gorgeous is this cover?
After Lyra—a princess incapable of speech or sound—is cast out of her kingdom of daylight by her wicked aunt, a witch saves her life, steals her memories, and raises her in an enchanted forest . . . disguised as a boy known only as Stain. Meanwhile, in Lyra’s rival kingdom, the prince of thorns and night is dying, and the only way for him to break his curse is to wed the princess of daylight—for she is his true equal. As Lyra finds her way back to her identity, an imposter princess prepares to steal her betrothed prince and her crown. To win back her kingdom, save the prince, and make peace with the land of the night, Lyra must be loud enough to be heard without a voice, and strong enough to pass a series of tests—ultimately proving she’s everything a traditional princess is not.
A high-fantasy gothic fairytale inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea and set in an alternative medieval world split apart by magic. To win back her kingdom of perpetual day, save her night prince, and reunite the sun with the moon, a princess incapable of speech or sound must prove herself everything a traditional princess is not: tough enough to sleep on a bed of nails, and loud enough to be heard without a voice. EXCERPT:

Mother crinkled her nose. “Don’t fret. You’re of marriageable age now. We must think of finding you a husband or your time will pass. I’m only thinking of your future, Jaclyn. I want to see you settled soon. Your father and I are not getting younger.”

“Getting married and bearing children is not for me. There’s much work to be done.”

I slipped my arms around her waist and pressed my head to her back. I inhaled deeply as warmth enveloped me and her love replaced the fright from my nightmares.

Safe. I am safe. No monsters.

“Our life is good here. Why would I want to fix what is not broken?”

“’Tis what we do. People will talk.”

“Let them.”

I scowled, anger boiling through my veins. I tended to not raise my voice, so I softened my tone out of respect.

“I will not be handed to a suitor I do not love.”

Mother patted my arm. “My child, you have much to learn. Love comes later. I did not love your father at first.”

“I will not follow other people’s ways.” Pouting, I shuffled my feet on the dirt.

She released a deep sigh. “Oh, Jaclyn. Your time will come. Everyone has a destiny. Everyone has a story to tell. Some more than others. We shall see what lies ahead for you. Fate will lead you to the path you are meant to take.”

I wished I had eyes for the future. I wanted to know a demon would not seize my soul, and I wanted to see a path without the nighttime cries. They must be monsters. I’d never heard a human throat make such tortured sounds.

What fate awaits a girl who hears monsters at night?

Illness swept through my stomach. A shudder racked me, beginning in my gut, forewarning me.
