Everyone in Emma's family is special. Her ancestors include Revolutionary War spies, brilliant scientists, and famous musicians--every single one of which learned of their extraordinary destiny through a dream.
For Emma, her own dream can't come soon enough. Right before her mother died, Emma promised that she'd do whatever it took to fulfill her destiny, and she doesn't want to let her mother down.
But when Emma's dream finally arrives, it points her toward an impossible task--finding a legendary treasure hidden in her town's cemetery. If Emma fails, she'll let down generations of extraordinary ancestors . . . including her own mother. But how can she find something that's been missing for centuries and might be protected by a mysterious singing ghost?
With her signature blend of lyrical writing, quirky humor, and unforgettable characters, Natalie Lloyd's The Key to Extraordinary cements her status as one of the most original voices writing for children today.

I was not disappointed with reading a second novel by Natalie Lloyd called “The Key to Extraordinary.”  Her writing is consistent, engaging, and meaningful.   Her characters are entertaining, and the descriptions of the surroundings are so vivid, I could picture myself there.  In fact, I keep reading Natalie’s books because of how I can imagine myself in these places and befriending these characters.

Dreams tell a lot.  For Emma and her family, a special dream determines your extraordinary destiny.  For most of Emma’s ancestor’s, their destiny is more or else clear.  However, for Emma, this in not the case.  Emma must untangle the clues of her dream, find a hidden treasure, and confront a ghost that is possibly protecting the mystery underlying Emma’s dream.

I felt an immediate connection to the main character, Emma.  She would offer tours of the graveyard to locals and visitors.  My Dad sold monuments for a living, so walking in a graveyard and reading tombstone inscriptions was a natural part of my childhood.  I smile to myself to think that Natalie captured something like this in a book.

The beloved journal with all the dreams safely recorded leaves a soft spot upon my heart.  Emma has a deep connection with her ancestors.  She can read about their dreams and learn what their extraordinary destiny was in life.  Written on journal pages of their own, the reader can share in the journal entries.  This opens questions about her own mother and herself.  The treasure hunt that will follow will not only fulfill her own destiny…

The names of each character are as extraordinary as this novel.  I will not divulge any in order not to ruin the fun.  They are flowery and musical in perfect harmony.  The secondary characters help Emma emotionally and physically which makes them family.

The mystery and intrigue surrounding the treasure hunt is what makes this novel a page tuner.  Readers ages eleven and up will be running alongside Emma and her friends as they run away from ghosts and treasure robbers.

A novel just as wonderful as her first one entitled, “A Snicker of Magic”.  (click on book title to read that review) I’m also pleased to announce that Natalie Lloyd has started a new series called, “The Problim Children” which I can’t wait to get my hands on. (I did not make a spelling error 😊

Who can Lena trust to help her find out the truth? Life in East Germany in the early 1980s is not easy for most people, but for Lena, it’s particularly hard. After the death of her parents in a factory explosion and time spent in a psychiatric hospital recovering from the trauma, she is sent to live with her stern aunt, a devoted member of the ruling Communist Party. Visits with her beloved Uncle Erich, a best-selling author, are her only respite. But one night, her uncle disappears without a trace. Gone also are all his belongings, his books, and even his birth records. Lena is desperate to know what happened to him, but it’s as if he never existed. The worst thing, however, is that she cannot discuss her uncle or her attempts to find him with anyone, not even her best friends. There are government spies everywhere. But Lena is unafraid and refuses to give up her search, regardless of the consequences. This searing novel about defiance, courage, and determination takes readers into the chilling world of a society ruled by autocratic despots, where nothing is what it seems.

Good Morning and welcome to my tour stop today for The House of One Thousand Eyes by Michelle Barker that was organized by Annick Press. I was honored to be asked to be a part of this tour. Thanks to Annick Press for organizing this tour and for sending me a copy of the book to read and review for my stop today.

The House of One Thousand Eyes was definitely a change from what I have been reading lately and its not one of those books you  want to sit and reading in one sitting. When I set out to start reading this I knew I was going to have to pace myself and for each day I set out a page limit and many times while I was reading I actually had to put the book down and take in what I had just read. This book is filled with so many twist and turns that you didn’t know what was going to happen. Quite a few times I was on the edge of my seat.

If your a reader of my blog you will know that I don’t tend to read a lot of historical fiction books and that is purely my choice but I am happy that I read this. The book was well written and things were moving along at a perfect pace. You can instantly tell a lot of research went into the book.

Our main character is Lena who is 17 years old and lives in a divided Germany in the 1980’s. Lena has been through more things then a normal 17 year old girl should. She lost both of her parents in a industrial accident and then was sent to a mental institution. Thankfully her aunt managed to get her out and she has been living with her aunt. I think through all this tragedy Lena was a strong kick ass girl who would stop at nothing to find out the truth about her parents and what happened to her uncle. She was willing to risk it all to get to the truth.

From reading this you can tell that life was not easy for anyone living there because you were constantly monitored and reported. People in power could control you with one signature on a piece of paper, either making your entire live disappear like you were never there to committing you a mental institution.

Even days after reading this I am still thinking about the book. I highly recommend this.

Guest Post/ Writing: What’s Necessary For the Journey by Michelle Barker

Today I am honored to have Michelle Barker the author of The House of One Thousand Eyes on the blog today. She graciously took time out of her busy schedule to do this post for me. Thank you Michelle I am so excited to have you on the blog today.

About The Author:

Michelle Barker was born and raised in Vancouver, but has also lived in Jerusalem, France, Quebec, and the Okanagan. As a child, she loved reading. Her favourite subject in school was English, and she did a degree at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in English literature (and an MFA in creative writing).

After many years of writing short fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and fantasy, Michelle decided to write about Germany. Her mother grew up there during World War Two, and then lived in East Germany until she escaped in the early fifties. Michelle realized her mother was getting older, and if she didn’t start talking to her mother about her life, the chance might slip away. Michelle’s first book with Annick Press is The House of One Thousand Eyes (Fall 2018). While this novel is 100% fiction, Michelle’s mother’s life inspired the book. In researching the book, Michelle traveled to Germany and visited the Stasi Headquarters in Berlin.

Michelle is an avid reader. She also plays piano and does triathlons. She once sailed from Vancouver to Hawaii on a small sailboat, but that is another story.

Writers are such fussy people—or at least, I am. There are certain things I need to have while writing, and other things that impinge upon my creativity and make it hard for me to concentrate.

My #1 writing essential is silence. Unlike some writers who rely on playlists while working, I do not work with music. If I’m desperate and need something to drown out exterior noise, I will resort to music without words, like jazz or classical. If a song has words, I will listen to them . . . and not work.

But, because I am a writer, there is an exception to the music rule. (Writers love exceptions. For every piece of writing advice I give and every craft suggestion I make, there is always an exception). On Fridays I often go to a writing group meet-up at a café in town. It’s surprising how well I work there, especially because it has all the qualities of a place that would usually irritate me. It’s noisy. There are people talking. There is music (with words!). And yet whenever I’m there, I can sink down into a zone where I’m just working—always by hand, no laptop—and I’m able to block out everything.

I used to live in the country, where silence actually meant NO NOISE WHATSOEVER, aside from the occasional bird. I moved to the city a few years ago and went through a long and painful period of culture shock. For the first few months, every car horn or siren drove me crazy. There was constant traffic, and often there was construction going on nearby. I didn’t think I’d ever adjust.

Then one day I was busy writing at my desk and marveling over how nice it was that everything was so quiet—and I realized. . . it wasn’t quiet at all. The same traffic and construction noises were still there. I had just gotten used to them.

I do draw the line at jackhammers, though. When someone decides to jackhammer near my apartment, I take a break from writing and do something else.

I drink tea while I’m writing, always in my favorite cup (with a quote on it from Stephen King).

I have a favorite pen that I write with when I’m working on a first draft, that my ex-husband brought me from Rome. It’s the perfect weight and width for my hand, and I don’t like to write with anything else. I use two different notebooks: one for journal writing and the other for things like notes and first drafts. I’m very picky about the journals I write in. I like something pretty and (usually) expensive. I’m not picky at all about my notebooks for first drafts. They’re the cheap kind you buy in the drugstore. That way I don’t feel any pressure to come up with something brilliant, since I didn’t spend any money on anything fancy!

Beyond a first draft, though, I do most of my work on a laptop.

One thing it’s essential that I don’t have around me is an internet connection. I am easily distracted by Facebook, Twitter and email, so if I’m planning to do work that requires deep concentration, I make sure those things are not an option. I also hide my phone in another room. Because, you know, if someone texts me, I have to text them back right away. 😉

When it comes to food, I often use a reward system for myself. If I’ve worked hard for an hour, I get to go to the kitchen for a piece of toast.

My cat is not essential, but she generally keeps me company while I’m working—often by sitting right on my manuscript. She has a thing about paper.

And last but certainly not least: exercise. For someone who sits a lot, exercise is essential. It is part of every writing day.

So those are the things I need for my writing journey. I’d love to hear what other writers find essential to their writing day.

Sunday’s In Bed With

This is being hosted by two of the sweetest people I have the privilege of knowing in real life, Kate and Kim. Sadly we don’t talk like we use to because you know real life happens but there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of them both.

Good Morning Everyone. Hope everyone had a good week this past week.  Its been a good week here so far. Michael has started hockey pre-camp this weekend. So far so good he is having fun being on the ice and I have to say its a little stressful because he is in midget and the age group is 15 to 18 so this will be a new experience for us but looking forward to it.

Anyways on to the books.

In this funny, action-packed graphic novel adventure, a science-obsessed girl finds herself in the middle of one of her favorite monster movies. Can she invent her way out of disaster while also saving the monster who has become her friend?
Zoe's favorite thing to do--besides invent and build robots--is watch classic monster movies. She has never been comfortable with kids her own age, and so she pretends she doesn't need friends while inside she's longing for connection. And then one day, Zoe finds a mysterious ring on her way home from school. She puts it on, gives it a twist, and--FRZAAKK! There's a massive burst of light! The next morning, a familiar monster appears at Zoe's window. He's from one of her favorite kaiju movies, and he likes Zoe--he wants to be her friend. Has her secret wish been fulfilled? But it turns out that Zoe's ring has brought more than just this friendly monster to life. More monsters have arrived, and they are hungry! Now she'll need to reach out to other people to help her save her town from destruction. Good thing she's a robotics genius!

Recently I was sent a little surprise package from Penguin Random House Canada and inside was this super cute and fun to read graphic novel that I am under no obligation to review but I have chosen to read and review it because I am sure this would appeal to all middle grade kids who love to have a laugh and read graphic novels.

If you read my blog on a regular bases you know that I don’t tend to review a lot of graphic novels and mainly that is because its not something I buy or get sent to review but I am hoping that will change from this point forward.

Graphic novels are such a fun and almost quick read. I was able to finish this up within a few hours. The graphics are amazing and eye catching. I loved reading this. I think this would appeal to both girls and boys just because it covers robots and monsters. Plus I loved the theme behind it, yes its okay to do things on your own and its okay to admit that when you need help you can ask for it.

Our main character is Zoe. She is super smart when it comes to doing robotics and to her that is all she needs in life because any friend she has made has always ended up hurting her in someway. She wants nothing to do with that heart ache. That is her perfect world. But in reality we all need that one true friend who will be there for us and you can help but root that it will happen for Zoe.

Zoe is content until she finds this ring which she thinks is just a ring but soon realizes there is more to it and soon realizes that the ring has summoned a monster who loves to eat. He thinks he is there to help and before long more monsters arrive, Before long  Zoe is in over her head. How will she react? What will she do?

I really enjoyed reading this it was such a fun and cute read.
