Nova Scotia has kept an incredible secret for centuries. In 1795, sixteen-year-old John Smith convinced he’s found buried treasure, digs down into a mysterious pit on a small island.

In present-day Nova Scotia, twelve-year-old Elisabeth London knows there’s no such thing as magic, but when she finds herself in 17th-century Scotland, she no longer knows what to think. While under the guardianship of a kind-hearted Highlander, Elisabeth discovers his ancestral home holds a mystery of its own.

As John continues to dig the strange pit, he inadvertently begins the longest-running, most expensive, and deadliest treasure hunt in history. Now, Elisabeth London and John Smith each try to unravel the secrets consuming them, unaware that a tormented young man holds the string weaving all of their lives together.

For Elisabeth, the adventure is just beginning. Unless her parents discover she’s time-traveling. Then…she is so grounded.

EXCERPT:

As the evening sun wandered behind the mountains, it cast an emerald glow across a glen. The valley was dotted with boulders, rocks, and drifts of bright yellow flowering bushes that blanketed the rolling hills, perfuming the air with a coconut scent. A small river twisted its way toward a distant forest. Overhead, a hawk screeched while soaring across an endless blue sky, declaring its vast territory to other hawks.

A dog yelped, over and over and over again.

Awakened by the barking, Elisabeth’s eyes narrowed in confusion. Her chest tightened as she sat up. “What the—?”

A huge, hairy boar, with razor-sharp tusks, lunged into the nearby brambles.

With a gasp, Elisabeth scrambled behind a large rock. Her breath hitched as her mind raced to make sense of the surrounding scenery.

That’s when a hunter, with a short beard and wild black hair that gave him a crazed look, came galloping over the crest of a hill on horseback. “Good boy, Talbot,” he yelled when the dog lunged into the brambles after the wild pig. The angry grunts of the boar filtered through the thick shrub.

Elisabeth leaped back, ducking low to hide behind the boulder. One hand pressed tight across her mouth.

The clip-clop stomping of the horse’s hooves sounded closer. Then, the hunter’s voice rose in pitch as his piercing blue-green eyes stared down at her, crouched in the heather. “What the devil…?”

A cold chill ran up her spine when he dismounted. His head cocked slightly to the side, and she realized his hearing focused on the dog and the boar as he drew closer.

Bending to peer at her, the hunter scratched his cheek. “You all right, lass?”

Elisabeth’s muscles tightened and she drew her head back sharply. “Yep. Fine.”

“Then…what are ye doing out here?” he asked in an uncertain tone while helping her to her feet. “Dressed in naught but…that?”

Elisabeth’s mouth opened, but nothing came out.

“Well, you’re lucky I found you before—” The silence in the valley now broken, Talbot howled, the boar squealed, and Elisabeth backed away with quick, jerky steps.

“Dinnae move, lass,” he ordered in a steady, low-pitched voice while reaching for his dagger.

Elisabeth gasped for air, watching the enraged boar desert its hiding spot in the brambles and charge toward the dog, its lethal tusks ready to kill.

Talbot seemed well-trained so, instead of turning tail and running, he danced backward, facing the pig, luring it away from his master. With the boar now in pursuit of the dog, the hunter ran at the beast as if he were a wild animal himself. Jumping on the boar from behind, he grabbed its ear, yanked its head up, and slashed its throat.

Elisabeth’s heart pounded, and she gripped the sides of her head.

The hunter jumped off the boar as it fell limp at his feet and cleaned the blade on the carcass before putting it away. He then walked toward Elisabeth, his bloody hands held in front of him.

“You’ve got a knife.” Elisabeth whimpered as her gaze darted from the enormous man dressed in a skirt to the ragtag group of hunters who came cantering over the crest of the hill.

“Aye, and a sword.” He smirked while pointing at it. “I’m not going to harm you, though. I’m hunting.”

“Hunting what? Little girls?” Not waiting for an answer, she bolted, heading for the distant forest.

The hunter took a step back and chuckled as Elisabeth made her great escape in slow motion, hindered terribly by bare feet.

“You’re completely mad!” he shouted while mounting his horse, motioning to the arriving men to deal with the boar carcass.

The black warhorse was as large and intimidating as the hunter and the animal’s powerful legs kicked up tall grass and thistles as it galloped along. The sound of its hooves seemed amplified as it neared Elisabeth.

Without needing to slow his horse, he reached down, scooped Elisabeth into his arms, and placed her in the saddle in front of him. She let out a sharp scream.

“There. Now be a good lass. I promise I’m not going to hurt you. You’re on my land so I know you’re not from these parts. I cannot leave you alone out here. It’s not safe and will soon be dark.”

A wave of coldness caused Elisabeth to tremble. She had no idea where she was and no recollection of arriving. When the hunter wrapped her in his plaid and nudged his horse on, Elisabeth’s shoulders tightened. She remained silent, bringing a shaky hand to her forehead while trying to figure out what the heck was going on. This definitely wasn’t Mahone Bay anymore.

Author Bio:

An adventurer at heart, Tammy has explored ruins in Rome, Pompeii, and Istanbul (Constantinople) with historians and archaeologists.

She’s slept in the tower of a 15th-century castle in Scotland, climbed down the cramped tunnels of Egyptian pyramids, scaled the Sydney Harbour Bridge, sailed on a tiny raft down the Yulong River in rural China, dined at a Bedouin camp in the Arabian Desert, and escaped from head-hunters in the South Pacific.

I suppose one could say her own childhood wish of time traveling adventures came true…in a roundabout way.

Review: A Hundred Other Girls

Review: A Hundred Other GirlsA Hundred Other Girls by Iman Hariri-Kia
Published by Sourcebooks Landmark on July 26, 2022
Pages: 304
Goodreads

For fans of The Devil Wears Prada and The Bold Type comes a smart, modern story about the shifting media landscape and one Middle Eastern-American writer finding her place in it.

How far would you go to keep the job a hundred other girls are ready to take?

Noora's life is a little off track. She's an aspiring writer and amateur blogger in New York—which is a nice way of saying that she tutors rich Upper East Side kids and is currently crashing on her sister's couch. But that's okay. Noora has Leila, who has always been her rock, and now she has another major influence to lean on: Vinyl magazine. The pages of Vinyl practically raised Noora, teaching her everything from how to properly insert a tampon to which political ideology she subscribes to.

So when she lands a highly coveted job as assistant to Loretta James, Vinyl's iconic editor-in-chief, Noora can't believe her luck. Her only dream is to write for Vinyl, and now with her foot firmly in the door and the Loretta James as her mentor, Noora is finally on the right path... or so she thinks.

Loretta is an unhinged nightmare, insecure and desperate to remain relevant in an evolving media landscape she doesn't understand. Noora's phone buzzes constantly with Loretta's bizarre demands, particularly with tasks Loretta hopes will undermine the success of Vinyl's wunderkind digital director Jade Aki. The reality of Noora's job is nothing like she expected, and a misguided crush on the hot IT guy only threatens to complicate things even more. But as Loretta and the old-school print team enter into a turf war with Jade and the woke-for-the-wrong-reasons digital team, Noora soon finds herself caught in the middle. And with her dream job on the line, she'll need to either choose a side or form her own.

Clever, incisive, and thoroughly fun, A Hundred Other Girls is an insider's take on the changing media industry, an ode to sisterhood, and a profound exploration of what it means to chase your dreams.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank Sourcebooks for granting me access to an eGalley of Iman Hariri-Kia’s debut novel A Hundred Other Girls for my review today.

To this very day (after almost 14 years of my blogging),  I am still so appreciative of publicists and publishers who graciously provide me with arcs (both physically and digitally) of upcoming books to read and review for you all. I love to discover debut books or even books that might have gone under my radar, discover new authors and of course, read my favorite author’s new books. So, once again thank you. I truly appreciate it.

As I mentioned this is a debut and I have to say that I breezed through this book fairly quickly, I read this in a day much to my surprise. I just have to say that I thought the beginning (the first few chapters) started a bit slow but then it really picked up I really enjoyed it and had a hard time putting it down. I will definitely be picking up future books that Iman writes.

The story takes place in my all-time favorite city, New York City.

The main character is Noora and she is a blogger (which I love reading about in books), growing up she has always loved the magazine Vinyl. Her dream finally comes true when she lands a job as an assistant to the editor-in-chief of the print magazine, Loretta James. She soon realizes that this is not all it’s cracked up to be and this might not be her dream job after all. Will she be able to stick it out?

Since her parents left the country, Noora has been living on her sister, Leila’s couch. Thankfully the siblings get along. Leila has always been there for Noora through thick and thin.

Noora has always wanted to be a writer and landing this assistant job she thinks she will get her foot in the door but soon realizes it’s not going to be as easy as she thinks it will be because Loretta makes her promise that she will not write any articles except for her blog. She also realizes that working with Loretta is not all it’s cracked up to be. Loretta is that boss from hell (which I can totally relate to) and has basically let Noora know she can’t have a life outside of work. She needs to be available day or night for her. This is where I definitely saw The Devil Wears Prada comparison. Which was a movie I really enjoyed.

If dealing with the boss from hell wasn’t enough, Noora soon realizes that the print and digital version of Vinyl is at war with each other. Which will come out on top or will they be able to work together? Before Noora can blink she is thrust into the underground world of the war between the two so to speak. She struggles with what to do and decides what she has to do but will this be her downfall?

I loved watching Noora finally get the confidence she needed to speak up and stand up for herself.

I could totally relate to Noora on so many levels. Working for Vinyl has always been her dream but then the boss from hell ruins it for her. She wants to quit but can’t because she needs the money. So she sticks it out risking her health for it. We have all been there, having a job we finally love and want to go to every day but then to have it all ruined by that boss who takes it away from us. We have to realize that those kinds of people are not good for us physically and mentally. We need to know when to step away.

Blog Tour & Review: The Accidental Pinup

Blog Tour & Review: The Accidental PinupThe Accidental Pinup by Danielle Jackson
Published by Berkley on July 19, 2022
Pages: 320
Goodreads

Rival photographers are forced to collaborate on a body-positive lingerie campaign, but they might have to readjust their focus when sparks fly.

Photographer Cassie Harris loves her job—her company Buxom Boudoir makes people look beautiful and feel empowered with her modern twist on classic pinup photography. Cassie’s best friend, Dana, is about to launch her own dangerously dreamy lingerie line and wants Cassie to shoot and direct the career-changing national campaign. But company politics and Dana’s complicated pregnancy interfere, and Cassie finds herself—a proud plus size Black woman—not behind the camera but in front of it.

Though she’s never modeled herself, Cassie’s pretty sure she can handle the sheer underwear and caution tape bralettes. She’s not sure she can work so intimately with the chosen photographer, her long-time competitor in the Chicago photography scene, Reid Montgomery. Their chemistry is undeniable on set, however, and feelings can develop faster than film…

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank Berkley/Penguin Random House USA for graciously providing me with an eGalley of The Accidental Pinup for my tour stop today. Which is out today.

When I first received the email about the book and read the synopsis, I knew I wanted to read it, and then I was sitting looking at the author’s name because it seemed so familiar, so I did what anyone would do and that was to look up Danielle online. I was correct in knowing the name.  Danielle was one of the first few publicists I worked with when I started my blog almost 14 years ago. Danielle introduced me to so many fantastic romance books and she was the one to introduce me to my love of Terry Spear’s books.

I also found out that Danielle is an event coordinator at one of my favorite indie bookstores. Hopefully one day I will be able to make it back to Chicago.

Anyways, on to my review.

The Accidental Pinup is Danielle’s debut contemporary romance book. After reading this I will definitely continue to pick up her future books. I plan on picking up a finished copy of the book. Plus isn’t the cover pretty?

I really enjoyed this and surprisingly enough I breezed through this pretty quickly. Once I started to read it I had a hard time putting it down.

The book is told in dual pov from Cassie and Reid. They are both rival photographers. Well in Cassie’s mind they are because he has taken all the jobs she has put her name for.

One of the characters is Cassie, she is the owner of Buxom Boudoir (which is a pinup/boudoir photography business). Cassie is a plus-sized black woman who is funny, smart, strong, creative, and charming. I would definitely want to be friends with her in the real world.

Her best friend, Dana is an influencer and model who is coming out with her own lingerie collection of size-inclusive items as part of a collab with a  lingerie company. For Dana, the deal is she is going to model and Cassie will be the photographer but it seems like the company has other ideas in mind.

Then things switch because Dana who is pregnant is forced on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy and unable to model so they ask Cassie to fill in because they think she would be perfect for the campaign. Cassie is unsure because she has never wanted to be in front of the camera and always feels best behind it. Cassie is 100% comfortable with her body and has no issue with wearing lingerie.

Enter Reid who is hoping to land this national ad campaign because he really needs the money. His brother has moved back home but is struggling to pay his bills and asks Reid for help. When the company approaches Reid to lead the campaign as the art director AKA as babysit and keep an eye on Cassie. He accepts but before long he is asked to be the photographer. Can Cassie and Reid work together?

One of the things I loved was the slow-burn romance. It worked perfectly in this situation because it allowed Cassie and Reid to get to know each other better (since they were working together) instead of just jumping into bed together. I feel some books you just want that slow burn. I also loved that this fell into one of my favorite tropes of enemies to lovers. I mean who doesn’t love this kind of trope?

Blog Tour & Review: We Made It All Up

We Made It All Up by Margot Harrison

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank TBR and Beyond Tours (you can click HERE to see the tour schedule) and the publisher for sending me an arc of the book to read.

Margot Harrison is a new author to me. Her previous two books are The Killer In Me, and The Glare. If they are anything like this I definitely want to read them.

I was pleasantly surprised by how instantly I was hooked into this and I could barely put it down. Needless to say, I read this within a few hours. I needed to know what was going on and what was going to happen.

I have to admit when I read the synopsis I knew I wanted to read the book because one of the main characters Celeste is moving to Montana from Montreal. I mean how could I pass this up. Although sadly there really isn’t much about the city a few places I know and have visited were mentioned.

The book is told in a dual timeline that is between now ( November 16th) and then (August 29th). It’s told in alternating chapters. This was done so beautifully and it worked for the storyline.

The storyline follows five characters throughout the book, Celeste (who has just moved from Montreal to Montana), Vivvy, Seth, Joss, and Bram (Vivvy’s brother).

The book opens up with Celeste, Vivvy, Seth, and Joss playing a game of spin the bottle and drinking in a cave. Celeste is not only drunk but has blacked out and can’t recall what happened apart from making out with Joss. She wakes up the next morning on a park bench. As Celeste is waiting to hear from Joss she soon finds out he is dead. She begins to question herself thinking that perhaps she did it. As the story progresses we see Celeste is trying to figure it all out. She would rather figure it out before the police come knocking on her door especially if she is behind it.

As the story progresses not only is everyone acting weird and suspicious but everyone has a different event of what happens. You also soon realize that this little town has a lot of deep dark secrets that they would like to remain secrets but will Joss’s death bring them to light?

I think I have only one critique about the book and that is I wish there was more of a backstory on Celeste. With all that, she went through I was curious to know what happened, in the end, to make her leave Montreal with her father.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the book and I loved trying to figure it out, to be honest, I was back and forth the entire book, although I did have my suspicions about one of them because as I was nearing the end I was thinking it was making sense but I was completely wrong. I love reading these kinds of books because they have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I love books that make you think and this certainly did that.

This past year I stumbled upon Rachel’s Random Resources book tours and I am so happy I did because I have been discovering some really good (new to me) authors and some really good books. Thank you, Rachel. Rachel graciously provided me with the eBook so that I could read it for my stop today.

This was a super quick read that I read in one sitting.  Actually the entire series each book can be read in one sitting because there are all pretty much under 250 pages.

This is the 22nd book in a 25-book series. I know I said after reading her last book, Jingle Bells in June that I wanted to start reading this series as I have enjoyed the books I have read so far. Before I begin my review I have to say that I am pretty sure you don’t have to read the books in order but you might want to so that you can know more about the characters in the book. Each of the books is stand-alone with its own storyline but characters from previous books make appearances. Not once did I feel like I was missing something.

The main characters are Ruby and Jaz. They are returning characters in the book and here is where I wished I would have read the previous books because I would love to have known how they met and how their relationship came about. Did that take away from the book? No, it didn’t. I still really enjoyed this.

Hudson surprises Ruby with a little mini vacation. Lately Ruby feels like they are out of sync with each other. Yes, they both love each other but it sort of feels like something is missing in their relationship and Ruby is trying to spice things up. Ruby is hoping this little mini vacation alone with Hudson will be just what the doctor ordered but no sooner are they there when Hudson’s assistant, Joanna, pops up over the fence and she seems to be taking up all his time with work-related issues.

I have to admit that I was instantly annoyed with Joanna. As I was reading I could help but wonder if there was more to her than meets the eye and I was so right. She really just rubbed me the wrong way with her constantly interrupting Ruby and Hundson’s time together, putting herself into situations she didn’t need to, and her snide comments to Ruby.

The other main character in the book is Jaz. She is a new mom and being a parent you can relate to her and the struggles a new mom goes through. Things aren’t perfect and she soon realizes that. With some wisdom from a new character, Emerald she knows what she has to do. There were so many times I just wanted to reach into the book and give her a reassuring hug.

Rosie also introduced two other new characters to the series and it was Bee and her daughter Jodie. Bee is the house cleaner for the house Ruby is staying at and they form an instant friendship and one that I hope will carry out throughout the series. Bee has struggled throughout her life and is hoping this will be a new start for her and her daughter but that’s not the case. Not long after everyone appears in this cute little seaside town things begin to get weird and threatening for her. She is ready to pack it all in and move on but Ruby insists on helping her. Will Ruby be able to help before it’s too late?

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and couldn’t put the book down. I can’t wait to see what happens next for these characters.

Speaking of the book and characters the next books in the series is Clara’s Secret Garden coming out on August 5th, A Winter Wish coming out on October 1st, and then Clara’s Magical Christmas on November 30th.
