Review: Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner

TITLE: CERTAIN GIRLS
AUTHOR: JENNIFER WEINER
DATE: APRIL 2008

Jennifer Weiner’s first novel, Good In Bed, and this latest one, Certain Girls, are written from the voice of Philadelphia Jewish girl, writer, mother, and wife Cannie Shapiro. I fell in love with Good in Bed and couldn’t put it down. I ended up rereading it so that I could remember everything about Cannie.

Since we left her, Cannie has published a best-selling fictionalized sexually-charged version of her life (which she tries to hide, and continues to write books using a different name and writing science fiction novels at a steady salary). She marries a diet doctor Peter Krushelevansky, and settles down to raise her daughter Joy. As Joy nears her bat mitzvah she discovers her mother’s novel, cannot separate fact from fiction, and goes on her personal mission to discover her identity while at the same time Peter decides he wants to have another baby with the uterus-free Cannie.

Throw in Joy’s insane but brilliant Aunt Elle, her lesbian grandmother, estranged grandfather, her father Bruce and his new wife and family, and all of the angst of being 13 and you get the picture.

Jennifer writes this novel from two perspectives in two unique voices, Cannie and Joy. As the stories unfold we experience the drama from both the perspective of mother and daughter, and this adds extra layers of depth to the story line.

This is a book about life and living. Parts are laugh out loud hysterically funny and parts will just make you cry. And the end is a shocker; I did not see it coming and neither will you. But again, that’s life, isn’t it?

Review: Remember me? by Sophie Kinsella

Remember Me?: A Novel

TITLE: REMEMBER ME?
AUTHOR: SOPHIE KINSELLA
DATE: FEBRUARY 2008
GENRE: CHICK LIT

What happens if you wake up one morning and realize that all of your dreams have magically come true overnight? This is what happened to Lexi Smart. She wakes up in a hospital to find that she doesn’t recognize herself – literally. The frizzy hair she had is gone, replaced by a sleek, shiny mane, and the lifelong nickname “Snaggletooth” just doesn’t apply anymore.

When the nurse gives Lexi her bag she thinks the nurse made a mistake. She doesn’t believe the Louis Vuitton handbag is actually hers. Why? Because Lexi has no memory of the past three years. In her mind, she’s a struggling assistant manager at a flooring company who just had a typical crazy night out with her girlfriends in 2004. In reality, she’s actually a member of the Board of Directors of that flooring company and is waking up from a minor car accident in 2007.

Lexi finds that she has everything she has ever wanted: she is beautiful, married to a ridiculously good-looking guy, makes a lot of money, and lives in the most beautiful loft she has ever seen. So what if everyone at the office not-so-secretly wishes she hadn’t recovered from the car accident? And so what if her oldest friends don’t want anything to do with her anymore? And does it really matter if her new husband scolds her like a child for not putting her shoes away properly?

This is a tale of Lexi’s quest to discover what happened to her during those three years to turn her into a person whom she doesn’t physically or emotionally recognize, and what she does when she finds out that her new life may not be as picture perfect as it seems.

For me the most interesting parts of the book come when Lexi is trying to discover what drove her to this complete personality change. She looks at what her husband and friends demonstrate that her life has become and searches for some fragment of the Lexi she knows within it.
Ironically, it is not with her husband that Lexi finds remnants of the woman she used to be, but with his architect partner, Jon. Jon delivers startling news to her soon after their first meeting and, unsure of whether to trust him, she holds him at arm’s length while trying to decipher the puzzle of the last three years.

Review: The last summer (of You & Me) by Ann Brashares

TITLE: THE LAST SUMMER (of You & Me)
AUTHOR: ANN BRASHARES
DATE: APRIL 2008

If you are wondering why the author’s name sounds so familiar its because she is the author of the young adult books called The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and series. This has nothing to do with those books. This in an entirely different book. You will notice that its no surprise that her first novel for adults features adult characters who seem reluctant to leave adolescence behind.

In The Last Summer (of You and Me), recent college graduate Alice returns for yet another summer on the Island, only to discover that life, in its inevitable way, is moving on – with or without her.

Alice, her older sister Riley, and next-door neighbor Paul have grown up together, barefoot on the boardwalks of the kind of resort town where nobody locks the door or carries a wallet. As a teen, Riley was the youngest of the lifeguards; now, at 24, she’s the oldest, still content to stare out over the ocean in the hopes of catching sight of a dolphin. Alice worries that both of them are aiming too low in the journey towards adulthood, hence Alice’s decision to go to law school, where she hopes she’ll learn to be a grown up.

Paul’s reaction to Alice’s plans is disappointment. He’s always wanted more for Alice, with whom he’s been in love as long as he can remember. To his surprise and delight, Alice reciprocates his affections. She has felt that same way about Paul.

When tragedy strikes, Alice finds herself filled with fear that she and Paul are betraying Riley by turning a threesome into a couple plus third wheel. Technically, Paul is Riley’s best friend, and they’ve always “shared” Alice as a little sister. For Alice to claim a greater stake in Paul than Riley is more than she feels entitled to allow herself.

Review: Bringing home the Birkin by Michael Tonello

TITLE: BRINGING HOME THE BIRKIN
AUTHOR: MICHAEL TONELLO
DATE: APRIL 2008

This was the first book I received from Harper Collins facebook group. I was pleasantly surprised when I was reading it. In all honesty, I didn’t think I would like it. Then I started to read it and couldn’t put it down.

The author calls it a memoir book. Which hasn’t really been my thing to read, so that might have been why I was thinking I wouldn’t like it.

If you’ve been dying to get your hands on a Birkin, then I suggest this book to you. I personally have never wanted one. I guess its one of those bags that I knew I never could afford so never lusted after it. You probably heard all the stories about how hard it is to actually get a Birkin bag, and that there is a two-year waiting list, and even worse a waiting list for the waiting list. Well, Tonello dispels all the myths that surround this bag.

After moving to Spain, on the promise of a job, Tonello finds himself in a desperate situation when the position falls through. After selling his precious Hermes scarf on eBay, he discovers the sheer number of fanatics that will pay a small fortune to get their hands on anything “Hermes”, especially the Birkin. And after a number of encounters Tonello discovers that the Birkin is where the money is at.

Getting his hands on one, however, proves to be anything but easy. And in the beginning, he hits a brick wall in the form of sales assistants. Then he discovers a formula and tries it out several times. He discovers this formula is the key and puts it into action.

I’ve tried not to reveal too much. What I will say, however, is that after the first few chapters I was hooked and had a hard time putting the book down. I ended up reading it all on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Tonello’s writing style is very descriptive of the beautiful cities he visits and his brilliant sense of humor served for very entertaining reading.

Review: Something Blue by Emily Giffin

Something Blue: A NovelThis is book two. This time the book is about Darcy. Basically, it’s her story and not Rachels.

Darcy thought she had it all figured out. She knew the more beautiful the was the more of a fantastic life you had. She always got what she wanted even from when she was a young girl. She asked and she got it no question asked. Darcy didn’t care about substance, morals, karma or the rules. What Darcy wanted Darcy got was the rule of thumb. She didn’t care who she hurt as long as she got what she wanted.

Darcy’s perfect world got turned upside down by her best friend Rachel. (Rachel to her is a plain Jane and good girl.) Darcy found out that her best friend stole her fiance Dex. It was only after she told Rachel that Dex called the wedding off. We find out that Darcy cheated on Dex with his best friend Marcus and that she was pregnant with Marcus’s baby. Then she found out about Dex and Rachel.

Life with Marcus isn’t the greatest and he leaves her. Darcy finds herself for the very first time in her life alone and with a baby on the way. No idea what to do she heads to London to hang with Ethan (yes the same guy Rachel went to see) and while thinking of going to London she is thinking of staying. Once she is there Darcy resorts back to her old ways of getting what she wants. While she is there she tries to make her life what it was in NYC.

She soon discovers through Ethan’s help that the rules that she uses to live by before no longer apply. She needs to change or else. Ethan really let into her on the way she was and how she treated people. The reason she is alone with no friends to lean on.

Upon thinking of what Ethan has told her she realizes that she must begin the journey towards being self-awareness, motherhood, forgiveness, and friendship. Darcy discovers the true meaning of friendship, love, and being able to have the happy ever after.

After reading this book I truly fell in love with Darcy’s character.

Review: Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

I was reading a review of her new book in the paper a few weeks ago. (Love the one you’re with) It seemed like a really good book. I went out and got her previous books. You don’t have to read the previous ones. Only two books are based with the same characters. Which I have read and will review here.

I was unsure when I started to read Something borrowed if I was going to like it. I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the book. Its a work of fiction. (Which is my fave genre of books)

Something borrowed is about a woman named Rachel. She is young attorney living on working in NYC (Manhatten). Rachel is always the good girl. She is sort of living under the shadow of her best friend Darcy. What ever Darcy wants Darcy gets. Darcy has the perfect life, career, fiance etc.

Things change for Rachel on her 30th bday. Darcy has planned her bday party. Darcy of course ends up being the center of attention. Ends of drunk and her fiance Dex (who is really Rachels friend from college) takes her home but only comes back because Darcy left her purse at the club.

Rachel introduced Darcy and Dex several years before. They are engaged and set to get married in a mere few months.

Rachel has had one too many drinks on her bday and when Dex comes back they have a few more. They leave and the next thing you know it they are in bed together. The next morning Rachel tries to put that night behind her. She feels bad for what has happened. To her it was on one off. She was drunk and she thought Dex was too. Only to find out that he really wasn’t drunk.

Rachel soon discovers that she truly has feelings for Dex and they continue to see each other. She tells Dex that if he really doesn’t love Darcy then he needs to cancel the wedding. Shortly after that she gets the invite to the wedding. (she is the maid of honor) Feeling all the pressure of being at Darcy’s beck and call and dealing with the wedding stuff she flees to London to see her friend Ethan. She goes to clear her head.

On the way home she has come to realize that Dex will marry Darcy and they he never will be her’s even though she knows he loves her and not Darcy. When she gets back from London Dex is waiting for her.

I don’t want to say much more and spoil the ending so I will stop there. I really enjoyed the book and was rooting for Rachel the whole time. Rachel is just like me in ways. I never fight for what I really want or wanted. So it was nice to see that a good person like Rachel got want she wanted or deserved.

Welcome to my spot

Hi. My name is Cindy and I am a stay at home mom (SAHM) to a 5 year old son named Michael. He starts kindergarden in September. So while he is home I do all the typical mom stuff. I try to keep him active.

I have been wanting to set up a blog for awhile now and finally decided to take the plunge. Having this blog I will be talking about books I have read. I love to read and i usually buy quite a few books per month or when they come out and I like them. I am a member of a group that allows me to get ARC (advanced readers copies) and so far since I have been a member of that site I have got 4 books from them. That has been a free book in the last 4 months. I just joined another site that will allow me to get 2 books per time of when they post new ones up. So that will be of great help for me. They only think is I have to blog about them but since I talk about them anyways I thought I could blog about them as well.

I also love to do product testing so that will come in here as well. I have been lucky to be on a site that has sent me a few great things such as a huge container of coffee, an electric toothbrush (I found out that the SRV was $100 so well worth blogging and talking about), I have done product testing on soy milk, and lastly the new cakesters cookies.

I would love to hear what you think so please leave feedback.

Have a great day everyone.
