Blog Tour & Review: We Made It All Up

About the book:

We Made It All Up by Margot Harrison
Genre: Young Adult Mystery Thriller
Publishing Date: July 12, 2022

Synopsis:

Celeste is the talk of the town when she moves to Montana from Montreal, but the only friend she makes is Vivvy, the heir to the town’s name and a social pariah. Inspired by a passion-fueled school incident, they begin writing a love-story fan fic between the popular guy and the school stoner, one that gradually reveals Celeste’s past. While their bond makes Celeste feel safe and alive again, Vivvy keeps prodding Celeste to turn fantasy into reality. When they finally try, one drunken night on a dark mountainside, Celeste is the one who ends up kissing golden boy Joss. And Joss ends up dead.

Celeste doesn’t remember the end of that night and can’t be sure she didn’t deliver the killing blow. Could she still be that scared of getting close to a boy? Secrets are hard to keep in a small town, and even Vivvy seems to suspect her. Exploring the winding passages of the cave where Joss died, Celeste learns he had his own dark secrets, as does Vivvy. The town isn’t as innocent as it appears.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank TBR and Beyond Tours (you can click HERE to see the tour schedule) and the publisher for sending me an arc of the book to read.

Margot Harrison is a new author to me. Her previous two books are The Killer In Me, and The Glare. If they are anything like this I definitely want to read them.

I was pleasantly surprised by how instantly I was hooked into this and I could barely put it down. Needless to say, I read this within a few hours. I needed to know what was going on and what was going to happen.

I have to admit when I read the synopsis I knew I wanted to read the book because one of the main characters Celeste is moving to Montana from Montreal. I mean how could I pass this up. Although sadly there really isn’t much about the city a few places I know and have visited were mentioned.

The book is told in a dual timeline that is between now ( November 16th) and then (August 29th). It’s told in alternating chapters. This was done so beautifully and it worked for the storyline.

The storyline follows five characters throughout the book, Celeste (who has just moved from Montreal to Montana), Vivvy, Seth, Joss, and Bram (Vivvy’s brother).

The book opens up with Celeste, Vivvy, Seth, and Joss playing a game of spin the bottle and drinking in a cave. Celeste is not only drunk but has blacked out and can’t recall what happened apart from making out with Joss. She wakes up the next morning on a park bench. As Celeste is waiting to hear from Joss she soon finds out he is dead. She begins to question herself thinking that perhaps she did it. As the story progresses we see Celeste is trying to figure it all out. She would rather figure it out before the police come knocking on her door especially if she is behind it.

As the story progresses not only is everyone acting weird and suspicious but everyone has a different event of what happens. You also soon realize that this little town has a lot of deep dark secrets that they would like to remain secrets but will Joss’s death bring them to light?

I think I have only one critique about the book and that is I wish there was more of a backstory on Celeste. With all that, she went through I was curious to know what happened, in the end, to make her leave Montreal with her father.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the book and I loved trying to figure it out, to be honest, I was back and forth the entire book, although I did have my suspicions about one of them because as I was nearing the end I was thinking it was making sense but I was completely wrong. I love reading these kinds of books because they have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I love books that make you think and this certainly did that.

It was meant to be a gloriously romantic getaway in Wales for Ruby and Hudson. That was the plan, anyway. This past year I stumbled upon Rachel’s Random Resources book tours and I am so happy I did because I have been discovering some really good (new to me) authors and some really good books. Thank you, Rachel. Rachel graciously provided me with the eBook so that I could read it for my stop today.

This was a super quick read that I read in one sitting.  Actually the entire series each book can be read in one sitting because there are all pretty much under 250 pages.

This is the 22nd book in a 25-book series. I know I said after reading her last book, Jingle Bells in June that I wanted to start reading this series as I have enjoyed the books I have read so far. Before I begin my review I have to say that I am pretty sure you don’t have to read the books in order but you might want to so that you can know more about the characters in the book. Each of the books is stand-alone with its own storyline but characters from previous books make appearances. Not once did I feel like I was missing something.

The main characters are Ruby and Jaz. They are returning characters in the book and here is where I wished I would have read the previous books because I would love to have known how they met and how their relationship came about. Did that take away from the book? No, it didn’t. I still really enjoyed this.

Hudson surprises Ruby with a little mini vacation. Lately Ruby feels like they are out of sync with each other. Yes, they both love each other but it sort of feels like something is missing in their relationship and Ruby is trying to spice things up. Ruby is hoping this little mini vacation alone with Hudson will be just what the doctor ordered but no sooner are they there when Hudson’s assistant, Joanna, pops up over the fence and she seems to be taking up all his time with work-related issues.

I have to admit that I was instantly annoyed with Joanna. As I was reading I could help but wonder if there was more to her than meets the eye and I was so right. She really just rubbed me the wrong way with her constantly interrupting Ruby and Hundson’s time together, putting herself into situations she didn’t need to, and her snide comments to Ruby.

The other main character in the book is Jaz. She is a new mom and being a parent you can relate to her and the struggles a new mom goes through. Things aren’t perfect and she soon realizes that. With some wisdom from a new character, Emerald she knows what she has to do. There were so many times I just wanted to reach into the book and give her a reassuring hug.

Rosie also introduced two other new characters to the series and it was Bee and her daughter Jodie. Bee is the house cleaner for the house Ruby is staying at and they form an instant friendship and one that I hope will carry out throughout the series. Bee has struggled throughout her life and is hoping this will be a new start for her and her daughter but that’s not the case. Not long after everyone appears in this cute little seaside town things begin to get weird and threatening for her. She is ready to pack it all in and move on but Ruby insists on helping her. Will Ruby be able to help before it’s too late?

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and couldn’t put the book down. I can’t wait to see what happens next for these characters.

Speaking of the book and characters the next books in the series is Clara’s Secret Garden coming out on August 5th, A Winter Wish coming out on October 1st, and then Clara’s Magical Christmas on November 30th.

Author Bio – Rosie’s series of novellas is centred around life in a country village cafe. Look out for ‘Clara’s Secret Garden’ out in August 2022.

Blog Tour & Review: The Finalists

Blog Tour & Review: The FinalistsThe Finalists by David Bell
Published by Berkley Books on July 5, 2022
Pages: 400
Goodreads

The competitive selection process for a prized college scholarship turns deadly in the latest thriller from USA Today bestselling author David Bell.
On a beautiful spring day, six college students with nothing in common besides a desperate inability to pay for school gather to compete for the prestigious Hyde Fellowship.

Milo--The front-runner.
Natalia--The brain.
James--The rule follower.
Sydney--The athlete.
Duffy--The cowboy.
Emily--The social justice warrior.

The six of them must surrender their devices when they enter Hyde House, an aging Victorian structure that sits in a secluded part of campus.

Once inside, the doors lock behind them. The students are not allowed to leave until they spend eight hours with a college administrator who will do almost anything to keep the school afloat and Nicholas Hyde, the privileged and notoriously irresponsible heir to the Hyde family fortune. If the students leave before time is up, they'll be immediately disqualified.

But when one of the six finalists drops dead, the other students fear they're being picked off one by one. With a violent protest raging outside and no way to escape, the survivors viciously turn on each other.

The Finalists is a chilling and profound look at the lengths both students and colleges will go to survive in a resource-starved academic world.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank Penguin Random House USA for graciously providing me with an eGalley of The Finalists to read for my tour stop today.

This is David Bell’s twelfth book and they are all stand-alone. His previous books are Cemetary Girl, The Hiding Place, Never Come Back, The Forgotten Girl, Somebody I Used to Know, Since She Went Away, Bring Her Home, Somebody’s Daughter, Layover, The Request, and Kill All Your Darlings.

I have only read one other book by David Bell and it was Layover. I knew then that he was an author I wanted to read more from and sadly I haven’t followed through with that until The Finalists his latest. Now I know he is definitely an author I want to read his backlist. His books are Mystery & thrillers. If you know me you will know that I love thrillers, especially ones where you literally can’t put the book down.

That was the case for The Finalists. It wasn’t until I went to put this into my GoodReads that I saw the book was 400 pages. Reading it as an eGalley I never really pay attention to the percent read and only notice those things later. I was instantly hooked and had a hard time putting the book down. I somehow managed to read this one rainy day.

The book takes place on one beautiful spring day. One of the things I love about the book is that there are only 8 characters involved which makes it easier to follow what is going on and to remember who everyone is. Plus the short chapters are another win for me.

The Finalists take place at a small town University and every year a group of top students with financial needs is selected to take part with one person being the winner to have the scholarship to attend the school. It is being funded by the founding family of the university. This year the remaining heir, Nicholas is putting the event on.

The participants are Milo, Natalia, James, Sydney, Duffy, and Emily, along with Troy who is the college administrator, and Nicholas, the Hyde heir. Everyone has a different background and they don’t seem to have anything in common but the need to win this scholarship. As a parent, I can say that going to university or college is expensive and you try to do what you can so that your child is not going to swim in debt when they are done. So I could see why this group would try to do all that they can to win this scholarship.

Upon entering everyone must give up their phones and any other electronic devices, and they will have no contact with the outside world for their test and interview. This is one of the traditions along with a long list of others. This year starts off differently because there is a protest happening and it’s all about the past events of the founding father. Sadly once inside things aren’t much better. Everyone is locked in Hyde House and no one can exit until the event is over. I should also mention that Hyde House is in a remote and secluded part of the university grounds.

It all starts our harmless until one of the students dies and everyone soon realizes there is a killer amount them but who? In a blink of an eye, things go from bad to worse and fingers start pointing to who it is and the group has to face some hard truths and decisions. Who is behind this and why are they doing it?

The timeline is the present day with a bit of the past when there is mention of certain characters or events.

I really enjoyed reading this intense read that had me sitting on the edge of my seat while trying to figure out who did it, why they did it, and how. I definitely want to read David’s backlist titles. I really think that David’s work will be my go-to with thrillers.

I was born shy. And near him, I fall apart. No wonder he can’t stand the sight of me.

After a fire destroys our home, my family is taken in by a billionaire tycoon. His mansion has countless bedrooms, yet my room is next door to his son, Thomas Ashworth III. Yes, he’s as pompous as the name suggests. And, for some reason, he hates my guts.

Even though his arrogance drives me crazy, his chiselled features turn me into a stammering, awkward mess. I hate being stuck with someone I can’t stand. And when he does something unexpectedly kind, it confuses my heart.

When I bump into him in the middle of the night, I’d never guess it lead to us sharing secrets.

He’s impossible to get out of my head. But he wouldn’t consider dating someone like me. Would he?

Review: Local Gone Missing

Review: Local Gone MissingLocal Gone Missing by Fiona Barton
Published by Berkley Books on June 14, 2022
Pages: 384
Goodreads

Detective Elise King investigates a man's disappearance in a seaside town where the locals and weekenders are at odds with each other in this rich and captivating new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Widow.

Elise King is a successful and ambitious detective--or she was before a medical leave left her unsure if she'd ever return to work. She now spends most days watching the growing tensions in her small seaside town of Ebbing--the weekenders renovating old bungalows into luxury homes, and the locals resentful of the changes.

Elise can only guess what really happens behind closed doors. But Dee Eastwood, her house cleaner, often knows. She's an invisible presence in many of the houses in town, but she sees and hears everything.

The conflicts boil over when a newcomer wants to put the town on the map with a giant music festival, and two teenagers overdose on drugs. When a man disappears the first night of the festival, Elise is drawn back into her detective work and starts digging for answers. Ebbing is a small town, but it's full of secrets and hidden connections that run deeper and darker than Elise could have ever imagined.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to mention that I was graciously provided with an eGalley of Local Gone Missing. Thank you Penguin Random House.

This is Fiona Barton’s fourth book. Her previous three books were a trilogy, The Widow, The Child, and The Suspect which I have read and really enjoyed. If you’re looking for an excellent psychological thriller, I recommend Fiona’s books. You won’t be disappointed. These are perfect beach/poolside reads.

Local Gone Missing is a standalone read. Although I could see this as another series.

What can I say for this book except for the fact that I think there were more twists and turns then any book I have recently read. I really enjoy books like this because you are led to think one thing and then question everything else.

When I go into these kinds of books I always tend to have a pen and paper beside me so that I can jot done characters, their relationship, and what I think are clues. This becomes very handy especially if a lot of characters are introduced. I also never reread the synopsis of the book because I find that gives away a lot so thankfully this was an eBook so I didn’t have to worry.

Local Gone Missing is told from multiple points of view, Charlie, Dee, and Elise. The timeline goes back and forth between now and before. This works well for this storyline and it’s not confusing at all since the chapters indicate when it’s happening.

Apart from those three main characters, there are numerous side characters as well. Way too many to count. It seemed like all the characters were coming out of the woodwork. Also, there are a lot of subplots but as you read you will see that it all makes sense in the end.

Elise is a successful detective but was put on sick leave because she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have an operation and treatment. Even though she isn’t currently working she can’t help but get involved. Once a cop always a cop. She desperately wants to get back to work but struggles with that idea because of everything she has gone through she is still having a bit of fogginess and has memory problems which are due to the treatment she has received.

Her next-door neighbor Ronnie is Elise’s partner in crime so to speak. She is there for Elise and is willing to help her on the side to figure out what is going on in their small little seaside community. Think Thelma and Louise. She would make a perfect detective with her whiteboard and string.

Then there is Dee. She is the local housekeeper of the community. Her husband, Liam is an out-of-work plumber and a former drug addict. They have a son, Cal. There is more to her than meets the eye. In the beginning, Dee was a part of the community and in a blink of an eye things become awkward and she is struggling to make ends meet. One thing about being a housekeeper is that you become invisible to the people you are working for, they forget your there and have conversations, fights etc. Dee knows so much about the people she works for. I have to say I wasn’t a fan of Liam because he would always get upset if Dee had to work. I was always like Dude she has to work seven days a week to bring money into the house since you’re not working!

Now there is Charlie, who the book is about. He goes missing (his wife, Pauline reports him missing) and everyone is shocked because he comes off as a sweet, charming enduring old man. But, there is more to Charlie than everyone knows. Everyone believes Charlie would not leave on his own and that foul play was involved. His last sighting was at a local music festival. What happened and where did Charlie go? As the police begin to do their work, Elise soon realizes that Charlie is not who he says he is. There is more to him than meets the eye. Did his past come back to haunt him? Or was it greed?

I have to tell you that I was on the edge of my seat reading this and even though I was marking things down and keeping track I still couldn’t figure out who did it. I was back and forth between many characters and only at the end did it all make sense. These are the kinds of books I truly enjoy reading. This wasn’t fast-paced but it was a page-turner. Fiona did a perfect job setting the scene and making the characters real with their pasts, and existing relationships.
