First Book of 2017

Its hard to believe that this is the 4th year for First Book of The Year. I have participated in every one.

The awesome host of this is Sheila from Book Journey. I am lucky enough to know Sheila IRL and she is exactly like she is online so I have to support her in this and so should you.

I always struggle with what I plan to read for the first book and for me it has to be something amazing because that sets the tone for the year in my opinion.

I’m not quite sure what I want read just yet because I don’t know if I want to pick a book that has been on the shelf forever or something else so for now I am just going to leave you with this reminder to sign up and come back New Years Eve to see what book I will be reading on New Years Day.

Number one New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury delivers an instant classic with this heartwarming Christmas story about a hundred-year flood, lost love, and the beauty of enduring friendships. Molly Allen lives alone in Portland, but she left her heart back in Tennessee with a man she walked away from five years ago. They had a rare sort of love she hasn’t found since.
Ryan Kelly lives in Nashville after a broken engagement and several years on the road touring with a country music duo. He can still hear Molly’s voice encouraging him to follow his dreams; Molly, whose memory stays with him. At least he can visit The Bridge—the oldest bookstore in historic downtown Franklin—and remember the hours he and Molly once spent there.
For thirty years, Charlie and Donna Barton have run The Bridge, providing the people of middle Tennessee with coffee, conversation, and shelves of good books—even through dismal book sales and the rise of digital books. Then in May, the hundred-year flood swept through Franklin and destroyed nearly every book in the store.
Now the bank is pulling the lease on The Bridge. Despondent and without answers, Charlie considers the unthinkable. Then tragedy strikes, and suddenly, everything changes. In the face of desperate brokenness and lost opportunities, could the miracle of a second chance actually unfold?
The Bridge is a love story set against the struggle of the American bookstore, a love story you will never forget.

The Bridge was a book I picked up last year on sale and never got a chance to read it so I was really happy that I was able to dig this out and read it this year.

Now I should say that I mistakenly decided to watch the movie before reading the book and I have to say that I regret doing that because I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I did the movie. I in fact ended up loving the movie much more.

I was having a hard time getting into the book and I honestly think that was due to the fact i just watched the movie before picking up the book to read. Its very rare for me to say I don’t like something and this is the time I am honestly saying I didn’t enjoy it but I really wanted to because it was all about books and who doesn’t love books and bookstores?

The Bridge is a bookstore in Tennessee that is run by our main character Charlie and his wife. I loved the idea behind the bookstore and the connection of the name to people. Books are the bridge to our lives.

The other main characters are Ryan and  Molly who are in Tennessee going to college and they end up spending a lot of time in the reading room at the Bridge and end up falling in love. That is until Molly’s father gets wind of this budding romance and quickly puts a holt to it because he has his daughter’s life mapped out and having a boy interfer is not something he wants. So they eventually go their separate ways.

Then fast forward to when the floods destroy The Bridge and Charlie is in financial danger and at risk of  loosing it all decides he can’t live any longer. He contemplates taking his own life because he think Donna would be better without him. To scared to go through with it he ends up in a accident that could take his life away from him.

Everyone rallies around Charlie in hopes that he will eventually come back. Can they save him and The Bridge before its too late?

Review/ An Irish Christmas by Melody Carlson

Review/ An Irish Christmas by Melody CarlsonAn Irish Christmas on September 2007
Pages: 189

For Colleen, life is spinning out of control. She just lost her husband, and her relationship with her young adult son Jamie is crumbling. Should she confess to him the secret that has been haunting her for twenty years? Jamie has a few secrets of his own. When he announces his plans to join the military, Colleen decides it's time for the two of them to take a trip together--to Ireland. The truth they discover there could fulfill both their dreams in a way neither ever thought possible. An Irish Christmas is a captivating story of love, deception, and secret passions, from popular and prolific author Melody Carlson.

Today I am going to be doing just a mini review on An Irish Christmas because its this is a novelle book so there isn’t alot to write about without giving away what the book is.

The book takes place in the early 1960’s and a family is grieving the lose of a dad/husband. The book is about Colleen (the mom) and Jamie (her son). For Colleen the world as she knows it is shifting and she doesn’t like it. She has just lost her husband of 22 years and her relationship with her son is going down the drain fast.

The Vietnam War is beginning and Jamie wants to join the Air Forces but Colleen would rather him stay home were he is safe. Jamie has no desire to go into the family show business and to add to that whenever Jamie is asked about his college he gets vague making Colleen wonder how truthful Jamie is being with her and how will she react when Jamie tells her his secret?  Speaking of being truthful, Colleen has been feeling guilty since her husbands death because she has a secret of her own that she thinks its time to tell Jamie about. Will these secrets be to much for each to bare?

Colleen decides that her and Jamie need to get away so she books tickets to spend Christmas in Ireland. She figures this is the perfect time to bond and perhaps share her secret with Jamie. Will Jamie do the same thing?

The book is told in Colleen and Jamie’s point of views so you get the story from both points of views.

I really enjoyed reading this especially this time of the year because you want everyone to be happy and honest with each other. Christmas is a time for loving and being with family no matter what they have done in the past.

Review/ Meet Me Under The Mistletoe by Abby Clements

After reading The Winter Wedding I couldn’t wait to dive into Meet Me Under the Mistletoe by Abby Clements. I was so happy that I found this at chapters and the added bonus was it was on the bargain table.

I have to start off by saying I love the cover. Its prettier in person.

This was Abby Clements debut novel and since then she has written six books in total and I have to say after reading two of them I really want to read her other books. One quick thing I should add is that in the back of this book there is a recipe for gingerbread stars and a DIY for a snow globe.

Rachel and Laurie were high school best friends and I think they always envisioned they would be but once out of high school the friends parted ways and grew apart which is normal with most friendships. For Rachel she got married young and had kids and they are living that life of being in a small city with the white picket fence living life and enjoying the simpler things. While Laurie is single. living in the city and has all she can have in life. She has the career in fashion and things are going good until she makes a mistake that could cost her her job. It almost does when she is asked to take a leave of absence.

Its almost a blessing in disguise when out of the blue Rachel contacts Laurie to see if it would be possible to stay with her in London while her mother in law is in the hospital. With things heading south fast Laurie suggests a house swap. This is the perfect thing Laurie need to get out of the city. Both quickly realize how the other lives. Each is a bit shocking to the other. How will each other survive in each others worlds?

The only thing I wish for the book was that there was more of an interaction between Rachel and Laurie. I would have loved to seem them rekindle their friendship. I think Laurie would have benefited from having that friendship back in her life again.

I should tell you that the book is told in Rachel and Laurie’s point of views and that each chapter is dated which I thought was find of fun.

As I was reading this I instantly thought of the movie The Holiday which sort of had the same premise behind it which I loved.

I really enjoyed reading this and I have to say it was the pefect book to read at this time of the year. It was just what I needed to read. It was light hearted and perfect. I have to admit that I didn’t want it to end.

Review/ The Winter Wedding by Abby Clements

One of the things I truly love about being a book blogger and working with publishers is that I get to discover new books and new authors. This was the case for The Winter Wedding by Abby Clements. I was contacted by Simon & Schuster UK asking if I would be interested in reading this and I was. I have to say that I am so happy that I did because I absolutely loved the book and since reading this I managed to find two of her books on the bargain table at Chapters that I had picked up and one will be reviewed tomorrow on my blog.

She has five previous books and they are all stand alones so you don’t have to worry about this being a series of books.

I just have to say this before beginning my review, all of Abby’s books have the cutest covers and I love them all. I tend to find that all the books coming out if the UK always have the best covers. Is that just me?

This month I am trying to post as many Christmas book reviews as I can (to give you some stocking stuffer ideas for the book lover in your life)  so I have to say this is sort of a Christmasy read but I would say its more of a winter read. Its the perfect read for this month in my opinion. I love reading light, heart warming, magical kind of books this time of the year. Its a quick and easy read.

Hazel and her twin sister, Lila are living and working in London. It has always been Hazel and Lila and then Lila meets Ollie and they fall in love and are getting married. So with that Lila is moving out of the flat leaving Hazel to wonder about her own life. She is trying to have it all and she is trying to make it work. She wants things to stay like they are but she realizes that they aren’t. So the first step she makes is finding a roommate and thankfully someone at her work (Amber) is looking for a place.

I think Hazel and Amber make the perfect team and they seem to compliment each other.

Things getting interesting when Lila asks Hazel to help with the wedding planning because she is busy with her dancing. Lila takes her up on it because her real life job is the pits and she is tired of being tried like crap and busting her butt off for nothing really. She works hard and someone else takes the credit with no chance and advnancing.

Hazel quickly realizes how much she is enjoying the wedding planning and seeing her sister’s wedding turn into a success she is quickly snatched by friends of Lila and Ollie’s to plan their weddings. Hazel has to decide does she risk it all and go out on her own or does she stay with what she knows?

I loved this book and the characters and I can’t wait to read more of Abby’s books.

Holiday Greetings From Amish Country

The Midwife's Christmas Surprise
by Marta Perry
Three years ago, the man Anna Zook hoped to marry left her and their Amish community for the English world. Now devoted to proving her abilities as a midwife, Anna has given up on marriage and children for herself. But when Benjamin Miller returns, now a changed man, can delivering a Christmas baby reunite these two hurting hearts?

A Christmas to Remember
by Jo Ann Brown
When a little girl leads shop owner Amos Stoltzfus to an Amish woman in distress, he rushes them to his family's farm. "Linda" has no memory and doesn't know if the sweet child is her daughter or even her kin. As Christmas arrives and Linda's identity is revealed, will Amos be able to claim his holiday guests as his own?

I love that we are now into December because that lets me dip into a whole new genre of reading for the next few weeks. I love reading Christmas books. Do you? What are some of your favorites?

This is two books in one. The first one is The Midwife’s Christmas Surprise by Marta Perry. In this book we meet a young woman by the name of Anna. She is learning to become a midwife and currently lives with her mentor, Elizabeth and her family. Due to her young age she is finding it hard to have the community trust her but she is working hard to prove them wrong, she just needs a boost of confidence to make it work.

No story would be complete without a little something to stir it up and this is the case when Elizabeth’s son, Benjamin returns home after being away for three years living in the English world. I think he realized that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. His family welcomes him home with open arms but will his once love, Anna do the same?

I loved reading this and wonder if  Benjamin could slowly win Anna’s heart back and he was patient and it was nice to watch this blossom.

The second story is A Christmas to Remember by Jo Ann Brown. This is actually part of the Amish Hearts series but I have to say that this can be read as a stand alone and you won’t be missing anything. I love how authors can do this with their books.

The story begins with a little girl stealing food from Amos’s grocery store. He notices this and quickly follows the girl to see where she is going and he quickly discovers she is with Linda. Linda is an Amish lady but has no memory of who she is, where she is or what has happened to her. So Amos takes it upon himself to bring these girls back to his family’s farm so that perhaps Linda can recover.

He sends out word with the Bishop to find out who these two are so that they can be reunited with their family because he knows someone out there is missing them this Christmas. Will the answers come before Christmas?

I really loved this because you could see that Amos and Linda were beginning to get close but neither wanted it to go any further until Linda regained her memory and I loved that about Amos. He was thinking of her before himself.

I really love reading these kinds of books and I hope I can dip into some more Amish books this holiday season.
