The Bishop’s Daughter Review

TITLE: The Bishop’s Daughter
AUTHOR: Tiffany L. Warren
PUB DATE: January 9, 2009

Thanks to Samantha at Hachette for sending me this ARC to read and review for the First Wild Cards Tour that will be taking place on January 12th 2009.

This is the third book by author Tiffany L. Warren. I have yet to read her two other books, from reading this one I will definitely be looking for them. I really enjoyed the book.

It opens up with a guy named Darrin. He is a young and inspiring writer, a great cook and a playboy. Darrin has is own blog in the book called “Diary of a Mad Black Blogger”. Its a Sunday morning and he is awakened by voices. The female is that of his “unofficial” girlfriend, Shayne, and the other is a man that he doesn’t recognize. He gets out of bed to check it out. When he sees Shayne watching a church service on tv and the male voice is that of Bishop Kumal Prentiss. While watching the service Darrin gets an idea to do an expose on the Bishop. Knowing that this man has got to be up to something.

Darrin convinces his father to foot the bill for him so that he can go to Atlanta to uncover the truth. Darrin’s father is rich he has his own business called “BainBridge Transport”. His father makes him a deal that if he comes up with nothing that Darrin will get a real job and stop mooching of him. Darrin agrees.

With the funding and a paid apartment in Atlanta, Darrin begins the adventure. He joins “Freedom of Life” one of Bishop’s Church’s. On his first visit to the church, Darrin sees a pretty girl that catches his eye. He finds out that she is the Bishop’s daughter Emoni. He begins to get to know her more when he joins the Single Ministry and Bible study with the church. He begins to fall in love with her. He doesn’t pursue it because Darcus, a member of the church tells him that Oscar and Emoni are together. Oscar is in love with Emoni. Emoni doesn’t feel the same way. She has her eye on Darrin. Emoni gets some tips from her younger sister Sasha in ways to get Darrin to notice her.

Darrin lands a spot with the church newsletter writing about the social events the Bishop attends. On a trip to Savannah with Emoni, Oscar and the Bishop, Darrin gets the dirt on the Bishop. What is this dirt you are asking? You will have to read the book.

Once back from Savannah Emoni and Darrin get together. Their are together a short time when Darrin invites Emoni over for dinner. Needing something at the store Darrin leaves Emoni alone in the apartment. Thinking of the conversation Emoni had with her mother about “No one just reveals himself” she sees a brochure for a cooking school in Atlanta, she goes to pick it up and accidentally bumps the desk where Darrin’s computer comes to life. She hits the back button and his blog appears with all the info about the Bishop and Emoni. Seeing this Emoni runs out of Darrin’s apartment before he returns. When he returns he realizes what has happened.

To complicate matters even more Shayne shows up in Atlanta hoping to reconnect with Darrin. Darrin finally tells her that there is nothing between them. Before he sends her packing Emoni shows up and she thinks Shayne is the girlfriend from Cleveland. She realizes that Darrin has been lying to her so she leaves. Darrin sends Shayne packing. With the realization of Darrin lying to her Emoni decides to give Oscar a chance. After awhile Oscar is always around and she is unhappy. Her mother picks up on this and Emoni realizes that she is in love with Darrin and lets Oscar know they are over.

While Darrin come clean to the Bishop and Emoni about the real reason he came to Atlanta? Will he expose the Bishop’s secrets? Will things work out for Emoni and Darrin? If these questions are burning your mind then I suggest you go and pick up the book to read and find out.

Holidays on Ice Review

TITLE: Holidays On Ice
AUTHOR: David Sedaris
PUB DATE: October 2008
ISBN: 9781600244872

Thanks to Anna at Hachette for sending me this audio book to listen to and review. David Sedaris is so funny. When I listened to it today I had to turn it off whenever my son came into the room. There is some inappropriate language that was used. Just a heads up if you have kids around.

One minute it was funny and then the next it was a little disturbing. I have to say I truly loved the first story Santaland Diaries the most. SantaLand Diaries is the true story of David’s experiences working as an elf in Macy’s SantaLand.

There are a total of 12 stories that are read on the cds. The total listening time is about 4 hours. I listened to this while I was cleaning the kitchen up. I admit it there was times when I had to stop cause I was laughing. I have never read any of David’s books before but I think I might have to pick one up to read.

I truly loved these two books. Something about reading these books got me into the holiday spirit. If your looking for a great gift idea let me suggest these two books. You won’t be disappointed.

In the previous book I failed to mention that Miranda had met Katharine’s step son Ian. The beginning of the book finds Miranda back in London anxiously awaiting to meet up with Ian at London’s train station so that they can head to Carlton Heath to spend Christmas together. While she is waiting she bumps into her old boyfriend Josh. He was on a ski trip with a few friends. On the train Ian gets a message that his father Andrew had a heart attack and is in the hospital. When they get off the train they rush to the hospital. Ian stays with his father while Katharine and Miranda go back to the Tea Cosy. Josh has followed Miranda to Tea Cosy in hopes to reunite. Miranda lets him know she isn’t available.

Its Christmas eve and Miranda is with the Whitcombes at the play. With Andrew being in the hospital Ian has taken over the role. When the play ends Ian and Mirana leave as Ian has a surprise for her. On the drive they stop at the Forgotten Rose Cottage. Miranda discovers that she owns it. It use to be Sir James painting cottage. She has always loved it that was the first place Ian and her kissed, outside. Ian proposes to Miranda and she accepts. The Whitcombes arrive to help celebrate and its is there that they receive bad news. The story of Miranda being Sir James love child is revelved. How will this affect Miranda and the Whitcombe family?

Review: Finding Father Christmas

TITLE: Finding Father Christmas
AUTHOR: Robin Jones Gunn
PUB DATE: October 2007
ISBN: 9780446526296

Thanks to Miriam at Hachette for sending me this great book to read before the Christmas holiday. I loved it. The story was beautiful and well written. It almost felt like you were in Carlton Heath.

Miranda is in search of her father. Her mother never told her anything about her father. When her mother died she only had little clues to go on such as a photograph of a young boy sitting on Father Christmas’s lap. On the back of the photograph was the name of the photography studio. Having no family on Christmas Eve Miranda decides to fly to London and search for her father. Once she is in Carlton Heath she discovers her world is about to change. She heads to the Tea Cosy to warm up. There she meets a woman named Katharine. Miranda shows the woman the photograph and Katharine remembers seeing it somewhere but can’t remember where. She invites Miranda to go to the theatre with her to see the community play called Christmas Carole perhaps someone there will recognize it. Since her mothers death she was never to a theatre and that was her Christmas present to her mother by going. After the play she is invited to the Whitcombes for the party. It is once she is there that she spots the photograph. She is invited to spend the night with the Whitcombes. She decides to stay and in the morning she realizes she can’t tell them that she is Sir James daughter. She begs Katharine not to say anything to them but she won’t promise. Miranda eventually tells them Christmas day at the dinner table.

Review: Flirting with Forty Book

TITLE: Flirting with Forty
AUTHOR: Jane Porter
PUB DATE: reprinted in 2008
ISBN: 978-0-446-69726-2

This is my second Jane Porter Book I read. My first introduction to Jane was Frog Prince which I read and loved. So when Miriam from Hachette was looking for people to read and review this book for the December blog tour I jumped at the opportunity to take part. She was generous enough to include all the books Jane has written: Frog Prince, Odd Mom Out, Mrs Perfect and Flirting with Forty.

Flirting with Forty is about a woman named Jackie who is a divorced mother of two: William who is nine years old and Jessica who is almost 6 years old. Jackie is about to turn 40. She is having a rough time with it all. Anne her best friend tells Jackie she needs to do something big for her birthday and suggests that Jackie goes away. Anne and Jackie make plans to go to Hawaii and spend the 40th birthday there. At the last minute Anne backs out of going and Jackie heads to Hawaii on her own. While there Jackie meets and flirts with Kai, the surf instructor. The have a fling.

When Jackie returns to Seattle she realizes she has fallen for Kai and she can’t stop thinking about him. She begins to make plans to return to Hawaii. When her friends and family hear of this they don’t approve of it. She starts to question her feelings for him and wonders if he feels the same about her. Then he shows up on her doorstep and Jackie is surprised. Does he feel the same way about her and if so what will be come of them?

This was very much a quick, lit and funny read. I have to say my favorite part of the book was the first chapter with getting the Christmas tree and getting it in the house.

Review: Get Positively Beautiful

TITLE: Get Positively Beautiful: The Ultimate Guide to Looking and Feeling Gorgeous
AUTHOR: Carmindy
PUB DATE: Oct 2008
ISBN:9781599951430

Thank You to Anna for sending me this great book to read and review.

I have always been a fan of Carmindy’s. I was first introduced to her on TLC’s What not to Wear. I love watching the show to get all kinds of tips. I have often said I should nominate myself for it. Who wouldn’t right?

The book offers all kinds of make up tips of the eyes, lips, cheeks and skin. She has in the back if the book a shopping list for make up, the tools and seasonal products.

Going through this book I realized that I was making a bunch of make up mistakes. Once I am feeling better I plan on going shopping and getting the proper make up and tools.
