**Kitty Goes to Washington Review

This is the second book in the Kitty series.

Kitty has taken her show on the road. She broadcasts her show live on Friday nights from a different city each week. As Kitty is on her cross country journey she talks to her lawyer who tells her that she has been called to appear before a Senate hearing in regards to the Center for the Study of Paranatural biology.

As Kitty enters Washington she comes upon a road block thinking its an accident at first but then realizes that they were looking for her. The Vampire Mistress, Alette, has offered Kitty protection. Kitty is unsure at first why she would be offering to protect Kitty. When she meets with Alette she informs Kitty that its not safe for her and that she must always be with a body guard. We know Kitty and know that she won’t go for it she will rebel. Which she does of course. There would be no story if she did.

Kitty’s first night in Washington she has been invited to an Art Exhibit. She is forced to bring Leo with her. At the gallery she leaves to go to the bathroom and bumps into Luis who is a hot Brazilian were-jaguar. They manage to escape Leo and he brings Kitty to Crescent. Crescent is a place were all were-animals gather. She meets Ahmed who is the leader and speaking with him she realizes he does things differently then what she is use too.

Kitty is hoping to talk more with Dr Flemming and find out more about Elijah Smith. She is a little surprised when she finds out he has been called to testify at the hearing. What is Elijah’s story and can he really cure the supernatural?

It was really nice to see that Carrie mentioned some well known Washington landmarks in the book and that Kitty wanted to see all the tourists spots. This showed the human aspect of Kitty.

Thank you to Miriam at Hachette for sending me this book. I am really enjoying the series so far and I am happy that I decided to step outside my comfort zone to read them. This is a genre of books that I normally wouldn’t have read on my own. Thank you again.

For another review of the book you can check out Donna’s blog.

A Not So Simple Life Review

PUB DATE: July 2008

This is another great start of a series for Melody Carlson. I am really enjoying reading Melody Carlson’s books. What I really liked about this book was the green tips Maya offered at the end of each chapter on what to do to make your living environment greener.

For me I am thankful to live in an area where last summer we were provide bins to compost food, grass etc. I never realized how much we threw in the garbage until I started composting. Instead of throwing about 4 bags of garbage out weekly I am down to one small bag. Plus I am a big time recycler.

A Not So Simple Life is book one in the series of Diary of a Teenage Girl. Its about Maya Stark. She is a 15 year old girl who appears to have it all, famous parents, money, and a Beverly Hills lifestyle. Her dad was a 80s pop star who is making a comeback. (Does that sound familiar? It seems so many popstars seem to be making a comeback these days doesn’t it?)

When you really look into Maya’s life you realize its not as perfect as it appears. Maya is not happy. She is trying to get emancipated from her parents. More so her mother. Her parents are divorced. Her dad is away on tour and has very little time for Maya. Her mother drinks and does drugs. So any money Maya’s father sends her mother takes it to support her habit. Her mother will vanish for days on end leaving Maya alone to fend for herself sadly Maya is use to it and manages to get along just fine. Maya is mature beyond her years.

Realizing that in order to get emancipated Maya needs to make sure she has money in her bank account to show a judge she will be able to support herself. Maya gets a job at a chic boutique on Rodeo Drive. While working there she is approached by a woman who works at a Ralph Lauren store. From there she is told she could model. Realizing she could make money she decides to go ahead and begins to work as a model. Maya saves about ten thousand dollars and its all in her account until one day she goes to deposite a check when she realizes there is a mistake. Maya has only about a thousand left. Her mother took the money. Maya is furious. She goes home, her mother is gone and she starts looking around. She realizes that her mother found the paper work on the emancipation.

Maya is furious so she calls her father and tells him everything. She tells him she is going to kill herself but she doesn’t really. When Maya’s mother finally comes home Maya confronts her about stealing the money and her mother is like its our money not just yours. This angers Maya so they start fighting. Thankfully before it can get to physical her dad storms in. Her dad tells her to pack her things cause she is going with him. Things are fun on the tour until Maya realizes its getting old fast.

Figuring out what to do they come up with the plan for Maya to go live with her uncle Allen and cousin Kim. Her father will send money for her to live in and she likes that idea.

This story continues in book 2 Its A Green Thing: Diary of a teenage girl.

**Kitty and The Midnight Hour Review

PUB DATE: November 2005

Thank you to Miriam at Hachette for sending me this book plus the other books in the series to read and for allowing me to take part in the March Book Tour. The March Book Tour is for Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand and Kitty Raises Hell.

I have to say first off that this isn’t a genre of books that I typically read. They are so outside my comfort zone. With that being said I have to say that I am so happy that I took part in this tour cause I really enjoyed Kitty and the Midnight Hour. Looking forward to reading Kitty Goes to Washington and the rest of the series this week.

Kitty and the Midnight Hour introduces Kitty. Kitty is a midnight dj at KNOB radio station. She is also a werewolf. Kitty also reveals how she became a werewolf. (I won’t say how so that I don’t spoil the book for you.) Kitty is part of a pack. The others are becoming more werewolf and less human as they change almost nightly and she only allows herself to change monthly on a full moon.

One night while working she is tired of taking calls for lame song requests and tells the listeners nothing after the 90’s. She decides to ask her listeners about the latest BatBoy article and what they think of the supernatural. Before she realizes it her show is a huge success.

This annoys the Vampires cause they feel as though Kitty has threatened their existence so they send someone to kill her. They think Kitty will expose them. When a dead boy appears in front of her apartment she is questioned by the police. Then before anyone realizes it more bodies are appearing all over the city.

Kitty is having a hard time dealing with her radio show, her pack who don’t approve, helping the cops track down the responsible person in the deaths and trying to find the group of people who claim they can cure Vampires.

I have to stop cause I will end up spoiling the book for you. The book was fast paced and an easy quick read. Very light. There is always action happening so it keeps your interest throughout the book. I have to admit it was a bit gory but that is to be expected from the book. Also I want to mention that there is some mild sex in the book but nothing over the top.

Another great thing I noticed in the book was the playlist that is at the beginning of the book and her other books as well and the reason for it is that when Carrie was writing the book she listened to these songs for inspiration. I was wondering that when I saw it and wondered how it would play in but listening to the songs I see how she would get her inspiration from them.

The Dead Guy Review

PUB DATE: December 2008

Thanks to Dorothy at Pump Up Your Promo for sending me this book. I am sorry for the delay in posting this but this month has been a bad month with being sick.

Jack Thigpen is called into investigate what is believed to be a car insurance scam. Jack gets more then what he bargained for. In the beginning of the book Jack is diagnosed with CJD which is Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease. Its the human version of mad cow. I have to say that this touched a soft spot for me because this disease is very real and you can die from this. The reason I know this is because about 20 or so years ago my uncle died from this. It was very sad to watch such a healthy person die from this.

While Jack is investicating the possible car insurance scam he calls in his best friend Hal in to help him out but Hal ends up being killed. Jack vows to find the people responsible for killing Hal. While Jack is struggling to deal with the lose of Hal he is also struggling to deal with his own uncertain future.

Jack survives numerous attempts on his life from being shot at to surviving an explosion. Through it all Jack never dies. I really enjoyed this book. I found it too be a page turner and the story flowed with enough action, murder, and a kidnapping. Just when you think you figure out who is behind it all it changes so it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Another thing I enjoyed was that it took place in Detroit. A place I visted several years ago. It was the perfect setting for the book.

Great Hair Review

Another one of my favorite shows is What Not to Wear on TLC Friday nights. I love watching it and Nick is one of my favorite parts of the show. When I heard about this book I had to go out and buy it. If I ever had the chance to go for a complete hair make over Nick would be my dream stylists. He knows within 30 seconds of seeing someone what will look good on them.

The book is filled with all kinds of photos of real people and not models and tips that will work for you. Nick has been in the hair industry for over 25 years. He is recognized world wide for his style and approach. He has a salon in New York City. You can check out his website at http://www.arrojostudio.com

How Not to Look old Review

PUB DATE: January 2008

Thank You to Anna at Hachette for sending me this great book.

As we all begin to get older we don’t want to look it. I have noticed that when I was younger (20’s) I had the tendency to dress fashionable and then when I became a mom I realized that I traded it in for the casual comfy style. Why get dressed up when right after the next feeding you would have to change cause of baby spit up? As I am getting older I want to look like I put effort into the way I look and dress. Have you noticed that when you get dressed up or look good you feel good? I noticed that.

Honestly I have to admit that I am rather hopeless when it comes to putting myself together in a hip but stylish way. I tend to come across as frumpy, rather than casual; or childish, rather than youthful. You want to look your age. What’s a girl to do? Thankfully there is Charla Krupp to guide me and you.

Each chapter tells you right away and up front about which things would be addressed in the chapter, in the form of a long list of “old lady” things that would make you look older and unhip things like clumpy mascara, skirts too long, sneakers with jeans etc.

Each chapter has a little section at the end called “Brilliant Buys”. Charla not only tested these items herself but these are items you can afford. Nothing bothers me more then seeing products that are so expensive that you need to mortgage your house to buy them. Honestly who can afford products like that? I want to look good but does that mean I have to go in debit to have them? No Charla will tell you what is just as good as those expensive items are.

What I also loved was that she made it easy for busy mothers like me to take all those tips and put them into my daily life. In every chapter of “How Not to Look Old”, Charla is careful to list high, medium and low maintenance beauty techniques.

Did you know that parting your hair on the side, instead of straight down the middle is a low maintenance beauty secret and that straight down the middles ages you?

This is a great book filled with pictures of before and after of famous people and regular people. So if you are fashion challenged like me then let me say this is the book for you. I managed to take the tips to heart and put them into my daily routine.
