Ferris Bueller’s Day Off meets Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist in this romp through the city that never sleeps from the New York Times bestselling author of Since You’ve Been Gone.

Two girls. One night. Zero phones.

Kat and Stevie—best friends, theater kids, polar opposites—have snuck away from the suburbs to spend a night in New York City. They have it all planned out. They’ll see a play, eat at the city’s hottest restaurant, and have the best. Night. Ever. What could go wrong?

Well. Kind of a lot?

They’re barely off the train before they’re dealing with destroyed phones, family drama, and unexpected Pomeranians. Over the next few hours, they’ll have to grapple with old flames, terrible theater, and unhelpful cab drivers. But there are also cute boys to kiss, parties to crash, dry cleaning to deliver (don’t ask), and the world’s best museum to explore.

Over the course of a wild night in the city that never sleeps, both Kat and Stevie will get a wake-up call about their friendship, their choices…and finally discover what they really want for their future.

That is, assuming they can make it to Grand Central before the clock strikes midnight.

Book Review: Anne Of Green Gables (A Graphic Novel)

Book Review: Anne Of Green Gables (A Graphic Novel)Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel Published by Andrews McMeel Publishing on October 24, 2017
Pages: 232
Goodreads

Schoolyard rivalries. Baking disasters. Puffed sleeves. Explore the violet vales and glorious green of Avonlea in this spirited adaptation.
The magic of L.M. Montgomery’s treasured classic is reimagined in a whimsically-illustrated graphic novel adaptation perfect for newcomers and kindred spirits alike. When Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan who can help manage their family farm, they have no idea what delightful trouble awaits them. With flame-red hair and an unstoppable imagination, 11-year-old Anne Shirley takes Green Gables by storm.
Anne’s misadventures bring a little romance to the lives of everyone she meets: her bosom friend, Diana Barry; the town gossip, Mrs. Lynde; and that infuriating tease, Gilbert Blythe. From triumphs and thrills to the depths of despair, Anne turns each everyday moment into something extraordinary.
The spirit of Anne is alive and well in Mariah Marsden's crisp adaptation, and it's a thrill to watch as the beloved orphan rushes headlong through Brenna Thummler's heavenly landscapes. Together Marsden and Thummler conjure all the magic and beauty of Green Gables. Like Anne herself, you won't want to leave. — Brian Selznick, author/illustrator of “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” and “The Marvels”

Back in 2017, I was graciously provided with an e-ARC copy of Anne of Green Gables A Graphic Novel and since then I have bought my own copy just because I loved it and because it’s Anne of Green Gables. If you know me in real life you know that I love Anne of Green Gables. I grew up reading the book series and loved it. To this very day, I still love it. I love going back and rereading it.

I have mentioned this before when I have reviewed a few graphic novels/mangas here on the blog that I always struggle with my reviews because I never know exactly how to review them. If you have any tips please share them with me in the comments section.

I will begin by saying that I loved the full-colored illustrations and Brenna Thummier did a fantastic job bringing Anne’s world to the book. The illustrations are colorful.

I am sure it must be hard to adapt a classic like Anne of Green Gables into a graphic novel but Mariah did a fantastic job and brought the best parts to life and the ones we all know from the book.

This is a condensed version of the book but includes the key parts of the story such as the beautiful ride with Mathew to Green Gables, Anne’s over-the-top apology to Rachel, and Anne hitting Gilbert with the slate. Plus a few others. Although I must warn you in advance to have a tissue ready because we all know what happens near the end. I knew it was coming and I still cried.

This is a super quick and easy read perfect for fans of Anne’s and kids who love graphic novels.

SYNC Summer Audiobooks 2021: Week 1

Just a reminder that SYNC Summer Audiobooks is now available. You can pick up a free audiobook or audiobooks if you decided to read both for free. This week’s selection is available from April 29th (today) until May 5th.

COME ON IN

This compelling audio collection of 15 #ownvoices short stories explores the realities of immigration and its abundant facets. The works are written by YA authors who are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Listeners will meet characters experiencing supposedly random police stops, making space for a family displaced from a tumultuous home country, and continually being asked where they’re from–when the answer might very well be the country they’re already in. Each story is voiced by one of several narrators; each narrator matches the origin and gender of the characters in a particular work, creating an authentic performance with appropriate pronunciations and accent. While some performances exaggerate character voices so absurdly as to be comical, this captivating anthology will hook listeners nonetheless.

ILLEGAL

Roxana Ortega and Christian Barillas return to narrate the conclusion to Stork’s previous book, DISAPPEARED. Having escaped the cartel in Mexico and illegally entered the United States, Sara, voiced by Ortega, has applied for asylum and awaits in a detention facility for a decision on her status. Ortega conveys Sara’s frustration as her faith in the U.S. justice system wanes with each passing day. Her brother, Emiliano, voiced by Barillas, manages to evade U.S. authorities but is being pursued by the cartel because he has evidence that proves their trafficking activities. Brutal worlds are revealed as the siblings risk everything to secure better lives. An intense, action-packed listen.

This year I am definitely going to give audiobooks a chance and see if I can truly get into them. So Come On It will be the first one I listen to.

Although Illegal does sound really good so I might get that one too if I can find a copy of Disappeared.

Have you read any of these? Will you listen to any of these?

MTL YA Fest Author/Book Spotlight: Tanya Boteju

Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens

Judy Blume meets RuPaul’s Drag Race in this funny, feel-good debut novel about a queer teen who navigates questions of identity and self-acceptance while discovering the magical world of drag.

Perpetually awkward Nima Kumara-Clark is bored with her insular community of Bridgeton, in love with her straight girlfriend, and trying to move past her mother’s unexpected departure. After a bewildering encounter at a local festival, Nima finds herself suddenly immersed in the drag scene on the other side of town.

Macho drag kings, magical queens, new love interests, and surprising allies propel Nima both painfully and hilariously closer to a self she never knew she could be—one that can confidently express and accept love. But she’ll have to learn to accept lost love to get there.

From debut author Tanya Boteju comes a poignant, laugh-out-loud tale of acceptance, self-expression, and the colorful worlds that await when we’re brave enough to look.

Bruised

Whip It meets We Are Okay in this vibrant coming-of-age story about a teen girl navigating first love, identity, and grief as she immerses herself in the colorful, brutal, beautiful world of roller derby—from the acclaimed author of Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens.

To Daya Wijesinghe, a bruise is a mixture of comfort and control. Since her parents died in an accident she survived, bruises have become a way to keep her pain on the surface of her skin so she doesn’t need to deal with the ache deep in her heart.

So when chance and circumstances bring her to a roller derby bout, Daya is hooked. Yes, the rules are confusing and the sport seems to require the kind of teamwork and human interaction Daya generally avoids. But the opportunities to bruise are countless, and Daya realizes that if she’s going to keep her emotional pain at bay, she’ll need all the opportunities she can get.

The deeper Daya immerses herself into the world of roller derby, though, the more she realizes it’s not the simple physical pain-fest she was hoping for. Her rough-and-tumble teammates and their fans push her limits in ways she never imagined, bringing Daya to big truths about love, loss, strength, and healing.

About The Author:

Tanya Boteju is an English teacher and writer living on unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations (Vancouver, Canada). Tanya may have been a drag king in her well-spent youth and knows that the queer community is full of magic and wonder. With her books, she hopes she’s brought some of that magic to those who need it most.

Two friends. One pact. The performance of their lives.

Hannah Abbott is stuck in a dead-end relationship and at a job she loves but that barely pays the bills.

The four walls of her tiny New York City apartment have never seemed so small. She’s barely toasted her thirtieth birthday when her old college friend Will knocks on her door with an unexpected proposal.

Will Thorne never forgot the marriage pact he made with Hannah, but he also never imagined he’d be the one to initiate it. One ex-fiancée and an almost-career-ending mistake later, however, he finds himself outside Hannah’s door, on bended knee, to collect on their graduation-night pinky promise.

With both of their futures at stake, Hannah and Will take a leap of faith.

Now, all they have to do is convince their friends and family that they’re madly in love. As long as they follow the list of rules they’ve drafted, everything should go smoothly. Except Will has never been good with rules, and Hannah can’t stop overthinking the sleeping arrangements. Turning thirty has never been so promising.

Excerpt:

Hannah’s eyes widened at the boulder-sized princess cut diamond in front of her. Her heart dropped—Brian. A few hours ago, she’d been debating breaking up with him. Was he really proposing on the dirty hallway floor? Hannah blinked rapidly, trapping tears she knew were coming. She’d brought up engagement six months ago. He’d scoffed and disappeared for a week, reemerging with a tan and few apologies. But here he was on bended knee. She turned her attention from the ring to the man kneeling in front of her—the man who was not Brian.

She took in the older, leaner version of the boy she had once known. Memories flooded her brain—study sessions, drunken nights, Wilderness concerts, a graduation-night kiss, and finally, the image of him draped over yet another girl, this one in a bridesmaid dress.

“William Thorne,” she said derisively. Her body buzzed, adrenaline coursing through her. She’d wanted it to be Brian—for him to have finally figured out that he wanted her for more than just the foreseeable future.

She turned her attention back to Will. He remained on one knee but had lowered the ring. A smile, halfway between questioning and amused, played across his face. “This is amazingly uncomfortable. Why do people propose like this?”

“Knights, courting, et cetera and so forth,” Hannah said absently, waving him into her apartment. She peeked around the door, but fortunately, it was late enough that the hallway was empty.

Will stood, pocketed the ring, and came in hesitantly despite his initial grand entrance. Hannah watched his eyes travel around the room, taking in the small clues littered throughout the apartment before focusing on her laptop, which still had a picture of the two of them open. Great first impression.

“You seem surprised to see me,” he said, turning his full attention and the power of his perfect smile on her.

She should’ve felt surprise at Will’s sudden appearance, but she didn’t. And not just because she’d just gotten a friend request from him—this was completely and utterly a Will thing to do. And really, she should’ve been expecting him.

“Well, you are a day late.” On top of the last half a decade. Even as Hannah thought it, she knew she had a hand in those lost years. In the end, it wouldn’t matter—not for them. They would still be Will and Hannah. She knew it, and by the contented expression on Will’s face, he knew it too.

We wanted to give authors a powerful place to promote their books, and budget-conscious readers a way to save money, in a newsletter people actually want to open.
