This is no ordinary apocalypse...
Hannah Ashton wakes up to silence. The entire city around her is empty, except for one other person: Leo Sterling. Leo might be hottest boy ever (and not just because he's the only one left), but he's also too charming, too selfish, and too devastating for his own good, let alone Hannah's.
Stuck with only each other, they explore a world with no parents, no friends, and no school and realize that they can be themselves instead of playing the parts everyone expects of them. Hannah doesn't have to be just an overachieving, music-box-perfect ballerina, and Leo can be more than a slacker, 80s-glam-metal-obsessed guitarist. Leo is a burst of honesty and fun that draws Hannah out, and Hannah's got Leo thinking about someone other than himself for the first time.
Together, they search for answers amid crushing isolation, but while their empty world may appear harmless . . . it's not. Because nothing is quite as it seems, and if Hannah and Leo don't figure out what's going on, they might just be torn apart forever.

Before I begin my review I just quickly want to say thank you to Scholastic/Scholastic Press for sending me an arc of You & Me at the End of the World by Brianna Bourne.

This is Brianna’s debut young adult novel.

If Brianna’s upcoming novel (Summer of 2022) is anything like this I am sure I am going to love it.

I have to say that I absolutely loved reading You & Me at the End of the World. It’s been a few days since reading it and I am still thinking about the book. I managed to read this in a day because I just couldn’t put the book down and every time I tried I was lured back in. Which is a good thing. If you like ya apocalypse books then I highly recommend this one. I am sure you will enjoy it.

When I started reading I have to admit given the current situation in the world thinking about an apocalypse is really not hard to do. Can you imagine waking up one day and realizing that you might be the only person alive in the world? What would you do? Could you handle it? I honestly don’t know if I could cope with being the only person in the world. A few days or even a week might be okay but then after that, I think I would start to struggle.

Could you imagine having free reins of a city and being able to do what you wanted? Where would you go and what would you do?

The book opens up with high school student and ballet dancer Hannah, who basically lives her life with a plan and going outside that plan knows that bad things will happen when you stray, working herself up to go into her friend’s family second-hand bookstore to grab some books. The reason why she has to work up to leaving her car to go into the bookstore is that she hasn’t seen another living soul in five days.

The only place besides her house and ballet that she feels comfortable is the bookstore. It’s there in the bookstore that she hears music. At first, she thinks she is hearing things but as the music continues she realizes it’s coming from next door. Climbing up on the counter to look through the vents of next door she sees someone. At first, Hannah is freaked out but so realizes she knows this person. It’s a classmate named Leo. He is in the music store playing the guitars.

They are both overjoyed to discover they aren’t alone anymore and decide to jump in Leo’s car and explore Houston. The only thing is this goes against Hannah’s plans but she throws caution to the air and goes with it but before long things start to happen that freak her out and all she wants to do is go home. Shadows are lurking in the corners, the weather has turned unpredictable, etc. Will Hannah and Leo be able to survive all that is thrown at them?

When I started the book I wasn’t sure what to think and actually thought it was just that Hannah woke up one day to discover she was alone in the world and she had no clue what had happened. Yes, she was coming up with theories as to what happened and I would have done the same thing. Then she finds Leo and I am like okay this makes sense and they both will figure out what happened. At this point, I wasn’t really sure what was going on until the last quarter of the book. That last quarter of the book hit me and I was like ya that makes so much sense now. It was only after I read that part that things started popping up in my head with clues. Why didn’t I see them sooner?

I also loved the slow-burn romance between Hannah and Leo. Leo is not Hannah’s typical guy she dates and for Leo, he doesn’t date girls he prefers to keep things very casual. Can Hannah and Leo see each other as anything more or will this be a friendship?

I was definitely on the edge of my seat most times throughout the book.

Brianna did a fantastic job with the world-building in the book.

Perfect for fans of Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli, this book will rip your heart out before showing you how to heal from tragedy and celebrate life in the process.
When Liam Cooper's older brother Ethan is killed in a hit-and-run, Liam has to not only learn to face the world without one of the people he loved the most, but also face the fading relationship with his two best friends.
Feeling more alone and isolated than ever, Liam finds themself sharing time with Marcus, Ethan's best friend, and through Marcus, Liam finds the one person that seems to know exactly what they're going through, for the better, and the worse.
This book is about grief. But it's also about why we live. Why we have to keep moving on, and why we should.

Before I begin my review I just quickly want to say thank you to Scholastic/PUSH for sending me an arc of The Ghosts We Keep by Mason Deaver to read.

This is Mason’s second stand-alone book. You will recall their debut was I Wish You All the Best. Sadly, I have yet to read it but I do have it on my wishlist and I am hoping to pick it up later this week providing my local Chapters have a copy in stock otherwise I will need to order it online. If I Wish You All the Best is anything like The Ghosts We Keep I am sure I will love it. Mason is definitely a new favorite author for me.

Please note that there are a few trigger warnings to this book such as grief and depression.

Our main character is Liam and it’s the summer after their brother, Ethan death. He was killed in a hit-and-run accident. The storyline follows before and after that event. It’s easy to distinguish that because each chapter is dated and there is a before and after included. The flow between the two is perfect. It all blends in. This was a great way to tell the story because once you read it you will completely understand why they did it this way.

Liam is completely heartbroken and struggling to come to terms with it and wondering how they can move on from this. Liam feels isolated from their friends, Vanessa & Joel, and their parents. They can sense the drifting in their friendship because Vanessa and Joel are dating and are beginning to do things together and when they do plan to do something as a group the couple bail. Liam takes it in the beginning but soon things come to a head and Liam explodes. Will this friendship be able to be salvaged?

At first, I was happy that Liam had Vanessa and Joel because I thought they had more of a bond but as the story progressed you can see that they were distancing themselves from Liam. Was it because they couldn’t understand what Liam was going through or was it because Liam was distant? I completely understand how frustrating it is when you have friends and you make plans and then suddenly they are ditching you or completely forgetting you had plans together. This is where my issue with Vanessa and Liam comes in. You don’t make plans to hang out and then completely forget to let your friend know that plans have changed.

Feeling like they have no one to turn to Liam reaches out to Ethan’s best friend, Marcus. They both are struggling with the loss. Will they be able to form a bond and help each other go through the process? What will Liam do when they discover things about Ethan they never knew before?

This is where I am on the fence should Liam have reached out to Marcus? I don’t know I guess to Liam it made sense because if anyone knew Ethan it would be Marcus. I very well might have done the same thing had I been in that position. I guess sometimes you just need to be with someone who understands what your going through.

This was a roller coaster of emotions for me. I went through every emotion with this book. Its been a long time since I read something like this.

I was instantly hooked and managed to read this pretty much in a day.

EXCERPT:

Harlow

I should’ve known something was up when a race red Ferrari pulled up to my house. Hendrix has always been flashy, from his material items to his personality. He commands the spaces he occupies. Hendrix is a man used to going after, and getting, anything and anyone he wants.

Except me. I’m the girl to tell him, “No.”

My response stuns him, and he asks, “It’s a no then?”

Slowly, he rises from the kneeling position he adopted mere seconds ago to ask me this life changing question.

“You deserve better than me,” I say as tears sting my eyes. I’m aware people are staring now. I thought we were in for an intimate night, sitting at a candle-lit table scattered with rose petals, tucked away at the back of the restaurant. But there’s nothing intimate about prying eyes focused on us, watching me refuse my boyfriend’s proposal.

He sits back down in his seat and reaches across the table for my hand. “You’re my beginning and end, Harlow. All I want is you.”

I can’t bring myself to meet his gaze. Staring into his honey brown eyes will only make this harder.

He watches me in silence, probably trying to figure out why I would say no to his proposal. We’ve been together for two years and things were going great. We’re often the couple people describe as “relationship goals.” But despite seeming picture perfect, I can’t shake the feeling that this isn’t lasting love.

“Don’t you ever feel like we’re just settling, Hendrix? As though we’re together because we’re comfortable, not because we’re in love with one another?” My eyes still haven’t met his. I didn’t want to have to sift through this with him tonight. I hadn’t expected him to propose to me. I for damn sure didn’t expect him to do it in a public place.

Still not letting go of my hand, he asks, “Are you saying you’re no longer in love with me?”

Thank you Expresso Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of today’s blog tour for Fairies and Frosting by Christina Baur which is the seventh book in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series. Also thank you for providing the Fairy Tales of Magicorum series as well. I plan on binge-reading this series and reviewing it very soon. So please check back to see those reviews.

The other books in the series are:
1. Wolves And Roses
2. Moonlight And Midtown
3. Slippers And Thieves
4. Shifters And Glyphs
5. Bandits And Ball Gowns
6. Fire and Cinder
7. Fairies and Frosting
8 Towers and Tithes

I have to admit that when I got the email asking if I wanted to be a part of this book tour I instantly jumped on board because the cover hooked me right away. I think it’s really pretty. Don’t you? I am a sucker for a pretty cover when it comes to books.

I read Fairies and Frosting without reading the previous books because silly me thought they were a series that you could read as a stand-alone and you actually can read it as a stand-alone if that makes sense? Although I do think you should really read the previous books to fully imagine the world that Christina has created.

You are probably saying Cindy, you read a fantasy book, you never read fantasy. I know right? I was actually surprised that I wanted to read this and the series. I think that may be for me because it wasn’t a super heavy fantasy I was able to enjoy it. If that make sense?

I really enjoyed Fairies and Frosting. It was a quick, fun, and interesting read. Plus having it take place in New York City was the frosting on the cupcake for me. I was instantly hooked from the beginning and managed to read it pretty much in one sitting because of the fast pace. The flow of the book was there and for me, I pretty much wanted to see what was going to happen throughout the story because of the way it was told.

I should also say that there is a little romance there between our main character Elle (Cinderella) and Alec. The romance between the two is very sweet and feels real.  If you haven’t guessed that this is a retelling of Cinderella and instead of this ball that the original story has, Fairies and Frosting has the Glass Slipper Festival.

The book is told from alternating points of view from both Elle and Alec so you get the dual perspective of the story.

Writing this review is a little hard for me because I don’t want to go into too much because it is part of a series that sort of continues book to book and I feel if I say too much it could spoil it if that makes sense. So what I will say is that Alec is the Prince of Le Charme jewelers and soon realizes that he is going to be bankrupt. Doing everything that he can to save Le Charme jewelers is a priority for him and Elle. They come up with a plan that could save the business and this is where the Glass Slipper Festival comes in.

It’s not going to be as easy as it seems as you soon discover. Will they be able to pull off the Glass Slipper Festival and save Le Charme Jewelers or will the powers that be take over?

I should also say that I read the ebook version and I was pleasantly surprised with the addition of photos/artwork that was in the book. It was a nice additional aspect to the book. One, in particular, was when Christina was describing the Apex Towers. Yes, I could visualize it but my vision was nothing like the authors. The artwork is beautiful. I am even contemplating purchasing the physical copies of this series for this reason.

Scarlett would never kill her best friend, perhaps a Citizen if the situation called for
it, but never Rhys. There are quite a few rules in the training center, but a few are the kind that are never broken.

1. Greens are not sent into Cities without officially being promoted to Blue.

2. Blues don’t kill each other.

So why is Scarlett being sent into a City without the proper training? And why does a bizarre, elderly male say Scarlett will kill Rhys? In the Shadow of the Cities details Scarlett’s life in the training center before she is pulled unexpectedly into City life. Without the proper training, she is confused about these things called “families” and why the Citizens aren’t grateful that she is keeping them safe.

In this dystopian novel, In the Shadow of the Cities, the story is told not from a Citizen’s point of view but from a Guard’s. Why do the guards seem to
tirelessly obey the government? How can they gun down Citizens mercilessly?

Find out as you follow Scarlett on her journey into the Cities.

Chapter 1

Scarlett stared out the window of her history class.

The Blue droned on at the front of the room, but Scarlett hated the story of the Government, not that she would dare say as much aloud. Blah, blah, blah. Citizens couldn’t be trusted to share. Blah, blah, blah. They had been organized according to abilities and were allowed to live their best lives as long as they followed the rules. Blah, blah, blah.

Scarlett had never seen one of these Citizens, but she had been shown many pictures. They looked just like her, except for the fact they weren’t as intelligent. But that wasn’t always something you could see.

Scarlett shifted to a more comfortable position in her chair and dared a glance over her shoulder at Jaylin. Jaylin was staring intently at the Blue as though they hadn’t been told this same story before, as though she might absorb some detail that she had missed during another account.

Scarlett sighed softly as her mind turned to what she would do when she was finished with her classes for the day. She had exactly two hours of free time before dinner. Free time was the only chance she would have to see Rhys because males and females weren’t often allowed to mingle.

A piece of paper landed on her desk, and Scarlett’s eyes flew up. The Blue was already moving on to the next desk. A quiz? On what?

They hadn’t learned anything ew. Scarlett waited for the signal to turn her paper over and quickly scanned the questions. Then, rolling her eyes at the quick bout of anxiety, she raced through the quiz, circling the correct answers.

All of her other classes moved on to new material after a week or two. But his- tory class—it was always the same. At least she was guaranteed a good grade. What Scarlett couldn’t wait for was the “Life in the Cities” class. But she wouldn’t be able to take that one until she was a Blue, and who knew when that would be. She had been a Green for three years, but she could continue to be a Green for an- other five if she wasn’t able to meet the right goals. She could potentially remain a Green forever, but she knew that wasn’t a real possibility, not with her dedication to the training.

A grating beep signaled the end of class, and Scarlett placed her book carefully into her satchel. Everyone remained silent until they exited the classroom, then Jaylin grabbed Scarlett’s arm.

“Female! You have got to come with me. Miya and I are planning on partic- ipating in the Optional Fitness Program, and you have to join us.”

Scarlett nodded, trying to match Jaylin’s enthusiasm for the program. Scarlett enjoyed working out, and she often spent time exercising during her free hours. But there was something about having another program in lieu of choosing her own exercises that made Scarlett wary of joining.

“Thanks, Jaylin, but Rhys and I are going to practice in the shooting range today.”

“You can practice tomorrow. The program is only four days a week.”

Scarlett and Jaylin were old friends. They had been promoted to Green on the same day and had nervously learned to navigate the new waters together.

Scarlett knew her friend wouldn’t be hurt if she turned her down.

“I think I need more aim training than ab training,” Scarlett said. They had reached the end of the hall. “I’ll see you at dinner time.”

Jaylin shrugged, making a pouty face that Scarlett knew was exaggerated.

“Fine, female, abandon me then. Miya and I will talk bad about you behind your back.”

Scarlett laughed. “Just don’t wear out your lips from using them too much.”

Scarlett hurried toward the front door, which led to the gate that separated the males’ and females’ training centers. There was only one way to pass from one to the other, and you had to be approved by the Blue guarding it. It was a fair process. Scarlett had never been denied entry.

She stepped up to the guard and presented her badge to be scanned. The guard nodded as the time flashed up on the board along with Scarlett’s information. She entered the males’ training compound, heading around the building rather than through it. Scarlett found most males maintained a horrendous odor, and it was best to avoid them in concentrated numbers when possible.

Scarlett entered the males’ shooting range, scanning the pods for the familiar dark curls. Pod 3. The pod where they had met.

Scarlett checked out a longer rifle and headed toward the pod, adjusting her safety gear. She waited for Rhys to lower his pistol and bob his head slightly to let her know he knew she was waiting to enter.

Carefully, Scarlett slipped the sound-proof glass door open then closed. She stood beside Rhys, taking her position on the other shooter’s mark. Rhys didn’t hogwash her with boring questions of how her classes were. He already knew. He took the same classes, just in the males’ training center.

“Five shots?” Rhys asked instead.

Scarlett raised her rifle. “I don’t have my gun of choice. I thought I would go with something I hadn’t practiced with for a while.”

“All the better,” Rhys responded, aiming and firing five shots in quick succes- sion. Four hit the middle of the target. The other one missed by two centimeters.

“Why? Because you’re assured of a win? Is that why you want to compete? Be- cause you can’t normally provide a challenge for me?”

Rhys smiled as he waited for her to take her turn. Scarlett hesitated, but she wasn’t one to back down from a challenge. She turned toward the target and took her time aiming, the bulky weapon unfamiliar in her grip.

Finally, she took her shots, pausing between each one.

“Two,” Rhys declared bluntly.

“Yes, two. Thank you. My eyes are working very well.”

Rhys laughed a little as he lifted his safety goggles and propped them on the top of his head. “Hey, I couldn’t be sure after those shots. Besides, you agreed to it. I didn’t force you into anything.”

“Sure,” Scarlett said, copying his move with the goggles. “The ‘peer pressure’ came on pretty strong.” Scarlett looked toward the booth where she had checked out the rifle, wondering what had made her grab it. She hated being beaten.

Rhys laughed and turned toward the target once more. They had various competitions and “trick shots” they could try, but Scarlett had something else on her mind. She gazed through the pod toward the east. She couldn’t see the Mound from here. The dorm’s tall frame was too close, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t on her mind.

“Your turn,” Rhys responded impatiently.

Scarlett shook her head “I have a better idea,” she said, even as her stomach twisted into knots. “I’m ready to get over my fear.”

“Of heights?” Rhys knew her well. He followed her gaze, then laughed, rubbing his coffee-colored hands together in enjoyment. “What are you going to do? Scale the dorm?”

Scarlett laughed. “Uh . . . no.”
“Then what? There’s nothing else taller than that, so if you don’t scale the dorm building, then you’re letting me down.”

“There’s the Mound,” Scarlett said, referring to the large thing that lurked just outside the fence, just outside the area they were allowed to go. No one quite knew what it was made of, but it looked possible to scale.

Rhys gave her an incredulous look. “You’re not serious. When?”

Scarlett shrugged, the nervousness making her feel weak. She turned to the tar- get and took a few shots to calm her nerves. They were near the bullseye, close enough with the unfamiliar weapon that she felt assured again.

“Tonight.”

“After lights out?”

Scarlett nodded. “Yes. The only question is . . . are you coming with me?”

Rhys cocked an eyebrow. “I never miss out on an adventure, but . . . I also don’t break the rules. The rules are there for a reason.”

The
corner of Scarlett’s mouth curved up just a bit. “What rule would we be breaking?”

Rhys shook his head. “I don’t know. How about never leaving the training cen- ter walls? Or the one about staying in bed between lights out and morning wake up? Do you want me to go on?”

Scarlett sighed. “Those are Level 1 infractions; it’s not like you’ve never broken the rules before.”

“Yeah, but two Level 1 infractions?” Rhys sighed and inspected the pistol care- fully. “I’ll do it. I mean, for you. But I know I’m close to being promoted. I know I’m going to be a Blue soon, and when that happens, none of this. I can’t risk being stuck at the training center for the rest of my career. I want to be in a City.”

Scarlett nodded. “Okay, tonight. I’ll see you an hour after lights out where the fences meet.”

Rhys considered her idea for a minute. “Okay, I’ll be there.” The seriousness of their plan weighed on them as they continued shooting.

Scarlett couldn’t back down. She had been considering the idea for weeks, and now seemed like the time to do it. After all, Mrs. said you should conquer all fears before entering a City. And that meant facing them. Now that the plan was in place, Scarlett felt nervous, like maybe she shouldn’t have suggested it, like maybe they would be better waiting one more night. She glanced askew at Rhys. She didn’t dare say anything to him now. He would never let her live it down. So, tonight it would be.

Topher Elliot is high school royalty.

The king of Lakeview prep.

You know the type. Disgustingly rich. Blond-haired. Eyes the color of a clear, blue sky. And muscles for days.

He also happens to be enemy #1, the bane of my existence.

Only, now my scholarship is in jeopardy and, like the peasant I am, I must tutor the king himself if I want to graduate.

Still, if I have to be around him, I might as well make it worth my while. So I send him a scathing text, telling him exactly what I think about him. But he mistakes me for someone else. That’s when I hatch a plan: get dirt on the king, and watch his reign crumble.

It’s about time someone made the king come tumbling down.

EXCERPT:

Now that we were alone, I couldn’t help but wonder if he got my text and what he thought about it.

Did it bother him? Did it affect him at all? Or did it bounce right off his bulletproof ego? Because he sure seemed unaffected.

I glanced up at him, confirming his gaze, and I almost opened my mouth and confessed with an apology when he said, “Hey, I uh, wanted to say sorry for this morning. Mikey and the guys can be jerks sometimes.”

I raised a brow, surprised at the admission. I hadn’t expected that.

“Sometimes?” I asked, and when he laughed, I flinched at the sound.

“Good point.” Topher grinned.

“What about you?” I asked.

“What about me?”

“You’re not a jerk sometimes?”

He winced like the words hurt. “Hey, you have to admit, you were staring pretty hard.”

“I was not. I was—”

“You were,” he crowed.

“I didn’t realize it was you.”

“What’s that mean?” he asked, leaning back in his chair, clearly enjoying our exchange.

What did that mean?

He crossed one leg over the other, propping his ankle on top of his knee. One arm draped casually over the back of the chair as he waited for my answer. And all I could think was, It must be nice to be so comfortable in your own skin.

I shifted my gaze to my nails, where I studied the glossy black polish. “It means,” I growled, “that if I had known it was you, I would’ve gouged my eyes out before taking a second look.”

“Could’ve fooled me,” Topher mumbled under his breath.

My eyes shot to him and narrowed. “Excuse me?”

He lifted a shoulder, then dropped it. “Just that it didn’t look like you were disgusted. It looked like you wanted to jump me.”

My jaw dropped, mouth gaping like a fish. I closed it, then repeated the process.

Great, he’s turned me into a guppy.

Annoyed with myself for letting him get to me, I snapped my mouth closed and spoke between clenched teeth. “Oh, and I suppose you’re an expert on what that looks like?”

“You said it, not me, but if it makes you feel any better,” he whispered, leaning close, “I kinda liked it.”

A choking sound gurgled from the back of my throat before I straightened, composing myself.

He wanted to get under my skin, and I was letting him.

“Whatever,” I muttered, then flipped open my textbook. “I suppose you’re sorry for being a jerk yesterday, too.”

“Yesterday?”

I huffed out a breath. Of course he’d so quickly forget.

My fingers curled around my book until my knuckles turned white. “Yeah, in first period?”

A crease formed between his brow. “You mean the name thing?”

The name thing. Like it was no big deal even though they’d been torturing me with it since the sixth grade. Oh, how fun it was to be known as Skunk Girl.

“Yeah, that and your friends stomping all over my stuff in the hall.”

He opened his mouth to speak, but I held out a hand and stopped him. “You know what? We make choices every day that make us who we are. No point in apologizing if you’re going to continue being a prick. ”

“Whoa.”

I bowed my head, feeling like a jerk. It was almost as bad as the text I sent him.

What had gotten into me? I never spoke my mind or stood my ground.

I pulled out a blank sheet of paper so we could do some problems when I felt the vibration from his silent laughter.

“What’s so funny?”

“Nothing.” He smirked.

I gnashed my teeth together, shooting him an unamused look.

“It’s just, I’m not used to you being so opinionated. You hardly ever speak in class. I think I’ve barely heard you say two words. Who knew you were so feisty?”

I frowned. That sounded almost like a compliment, but why did it feel backhanded?

“Yeah, well, you don’t really know me.”

“True. I guess I don’t. You sure seem to think you have me pegged though.”

It was a statement, not a question. And he was right. “I know exactly who you are.”

“And who is that?” he asked, his tone hard as steel.

“You’re Topher Elliot, King Royal. You walk on water, and everyone bows at your feet.”

“King Royal?”

I rolled my eyes. “Oh, don’t act like you don’t know what everyone calls you guys.”

He exhaled and stared down at his textbook with a frown. For a moment, he looked almost bothered by it. But that was impossible. Boys like Topher didn’t care what girls like me thought of them.

“I mean, I’ve heard the royal thing, but . . . Anyway, it’s not like I wanna be called that.”

“Okay,” I said, when what I really meant was You expect me to believe that?

“So that’s it, then, huh? One label and you’ve got me all figured out?”

His throat bobbed, and he almost sounded . . . angry or upset. Which was weird.

When I said nothing, he straightened in his chair and glanced down at his book. “Whatever. Let’s just get on with this.”

Discovering I was a witch was my new beginning…
being locked away for it may be my end.

Will my father’s lies cost me my life?

Imprisoned for the ultimate crime, use of forbidden magic, should earn me some respect at Spellbound Prison, but when I refuse to join the Blood Coven no amount of street cred can save me from their wrath. Their reach extends far past the inmates, possibly all the way to the Warden himself.

I don’t stand a chance alone, but trusting people is not my strong suite at the moment.

Discovering my true heritage brings dangers of its own…

My powers can no longer be contained with binding spells. I can’t control them and my enemies know more about my magic than I do.

Could the family pendant that hangs from my neck be the key to everything?

Learning to control my powers will take some getting used to.

Being imprisoned with the worst criminals in the magical community will take survival skills.

You’ll love this gripping tale full of magic, mayhem, and mermaids because Jewels’ fight for survival and the truth will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Excerpt:

I leaned against his chest, listening to his rapid heartbeat. I breathed in his musky scent, an addicting aroma of fig and sandalwood. We sat there wrapped in each other’s arms until I felt myself start to drift off to sleep.

“Hey, none of that now. We better get back before they notice we are gone. Magic like that is draining. You need to rest.”

He pulled me to my feet and led me back up the stairs and out the red door. We walked down the hall hand in hand, not a guard in sight. As we rounded the corner to my cellblock an alarm sounded, followed by the warden’s voice over the intercom.

“Return to your cells immediately for a head count. Those outside of their cells in five minutes will be dealt with using lethal force. Return to your cells now.”

Brendan’s jaw clenched. He grabbed my cheeks between his palms, kissing me hard on the mouth. I wrapped my arms around his neck, searching for that feeling from before. I reached it just as his lips parted from mine and his fingers caressed my cheeks. My body craved his again and I never wanted him to leave.

“Get to your cell.” The shine in his eyes was gone and a dull sadness was all that was left. “Stay safe, Newbie.” He turned on his heels and sprinted down the hall, disappearing around a corner before I could say goodbye. A splash followed by dampness on my leg
dragged me from my trance. I looked down and my eyes landed on Bree peeking out from the water. Only the top half of her face and head were visible. She bobbed up and down in the dark, stone trench, her eyes wide with fright. She lifted her head completely out of the water and locked eyes with me.

“Jewels, I think the secrets have escaped,” she whispered.

“What secrets, Bree?”

“All of them.” Footsteps thundered down the hall as inmates barreled into their cells and Bree disappeared beneath the water.
