Book Blitz: Merry Ex-Mas

Merry Ex-Mas
Elizabeth Janette
Publication date: November 10th 2021
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Holiday, Romance

It’s been ten years since Delaney Silverman last stepped foot on the Silver Bells Christmas Tree farm her family owns and operates, but when her father dies, she has no choice. Even if it means mending fences with her estranged mother. The last thing this reformed wild-child-turned-Manhattan-marketing-pro has in mind, though, is a second chance at first love. But after life brings her face to face with the sexy, ex-fiancé neighbor boy, she realizes he’s everything she never knew she needed.

Travis Harper knows two things to be true: 1. It’s time to adopt his foster daughter and build a custom home life for themselves, and 2. Laney Silverman is the last woman he’d ever trust with their hearts, even if she is everything he’s ever wanted. Especially since she has a bad habit of walking away from him.

Will twelve days be enough to give two former lovers a Merry Ex-Mas?

EXCERPT:

Releasing her grip on the luggage, Laney wrapped her arms around her mom, pulling her into an awkward embrace.

Ruth stiffened. “What . . . are you doing?”

“Hugging you. Apparently it’s what people do when they’ve lost someone they love.”

“Yeah, well, stop it. I don’t need your sympathy.”

Whatever emotion Travis thought he saw when looking at Laney’s mother, it wasn’t there now. When she drew back and studied Ruth’s face, no tears clouded her eyes. No grief etched her expression. Only annoyance, pure and simple. Like always. Laney dropped her arms. Same old Mama. Lovable as a freaking porcupine.

Deep breath, girl. You can do this. For Dad. She peered up at the house. Despite the generous square footage of the single-story bungalow-style house, from the outside, the home appeared smaller, darker without her father’s presence. She swallowed hard to dislodge the lump of grief wedged in her throat and forced herself to enter the house.

Crossing the threshold tugged at the threads of memories she’d kept squirreled away. Not all of them welcome. It took only one whiff of the familiar cinnamon coffee scent before the years magically melted away, and she was eighteen again, chafing at the bit, dying for just one ounce of the freedom her friends possessed.

Laney shook off the ghosts that held her hostage and tried to only focus on the positive memories. The ones with her dad.

As she made her way through the living and dining room toward her old bedroom, a smile pulled at her lips as fond memories bubbled up. She’d been closest to her father and everywhere her gaze landed brought forth an image of him to warm her heart. Fingers drifted over the couch, threadbare now but still located in the same place against the wall. Her father’s most-coveted possession, a black leather recliner, nestled in the corner of the living room. The mantle above the stone fireplace where Christmas stockings once hung. The oil paintings of snow-covered barns in the middle of a forest.

An image of her father wafted through the recesses of her mind. Happy and smiling. The world could be falling apart around him, and he’d still be as jolly as good old St. Nick. Hard to believe he was gone. The urge to cry swelled, but she tamped it down like a good girl and turned away, plastering a smile on her face.

“Where on Earth are you going?”

“To my bedroom.”

Your bedroom?” Her mama tsked. “Good heavens, child, it stopped being your bedroom ages ago when you moved out.”

Laney used a foot to push open the bedroom door and stopped dead. “Good Lord Almighty, Mama, what have you done?”

It was like Santa’s workshop had materialized right in the middle of the room. Her mouth hung open as she gawked at the atrocity. Where once stood a vanity filled with cheap cosmetics only a teenager would buy, now a fake Christmas tree loomed, wilting under the weight of too many ornaments. Garland hung from the high shelf spanning the top of all four walls. A toy train chugged its way around the room. A workbench sat along one wall with a dozen or so holiday crafts waiting to be finished. The walls had been stripped of the soft turquoise blue hue her sixteen-year-old self had painstakingly selected, and replaced with a dreadful shade of gold that mirrored the tree ornaments.

And her daybed? Nowhere to be found. The half dozen or so NSYNC and Jonas Brothers rock band posters were conspicuously missing too. Gone were her hot-pink curtains, fuzzy beanbag, and black shag rug as well as anything remotely resembling her teenage years. All signs of her life there had been erased.

She’d been erased.

An unlikely friendship between a septuagenarian and a younger woman becomes a story of broken trust, lost love, and the unexpected blooming of hope against the longest odds.

You trying to kill yourself, or are you just stupid?

Marcie Malone didn't think she was either, but when she drives from Georgia to the southwestern shore of Florida without a plan and wakes up in a stranger's home, she doesn't seem to know anymore. Despondent and heartbroken over an unexpected loss and the man she thought she could count on, Marcie leaves him behind, along with her job and her whole life, and finds she has nowhere to go.

Herman Flint has seen just about everything in his seventy years living in a fading, blue-collar Florida town, but the body collapsed on the beach outside his window is something new. The woman is clearly in some kind of trouble and Flint wants no part of it--he's learned to live on his own just fine, without the hassle of worrying about others. But against his better judgment he takes Marcie in and lets her stay until she's on her feet on the condition she keeps out of his way.

As the unlikely pair slowly copes with the damages life has wrought, Marcie and Flint have to decide whether to face up to the past they're each running from, and find a way to move forward with the people they care about most.

Before I begin my review I quickly want to thank Penguin Random House USA for sending me a eGalley of the book to read for my tour stop today.

How pretty is this cover? I think this is another book that I will have to pick up a physical copy of.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this. It’s been a few days since reading this and I am still sitting here thinking about the book. It’s been a while since I have felt this way about a book. I went through so many emotions with this.

Marcie has been with her high school sweetheart, Will for 20+ years. They got married in their teens when Marcie revealed she was pregnant. Sadly it ended in a miscarriage. Now as they are approaching a certain time in their lives Marcie discovers she is pregnant once again and needless to say Will is not very happy about it like Marcie thought he would be. Sadly that pregnancy ends in a miscarriage and I think if Will could jump for joy he would have. He has done a crappy job of consoling Marcie. Having to deal with the miscarriage, the lack of support from Will, and basically, people who can’t do their jobs, Marci throws the towel in and just high-tails it out of there. Marcie has just done something that I am sure we all have thought about one time or another and that is just deciding to say screw it with my life. She walks away or in this case, drives away. She has not thought this through so she has no plan whatsoever. She drives until she gets to the beach.

Herman Flint, otherwise known as Flint sees Marcie on the beach in front of his house asleep in the sand. Flint is a grumpy old man who wants to be left alone. I was surprised that he ended up caring so much about Marcie. From the moment of making sure she was okay on the beach, to bringing her into his home and even giving her a spare key so that she could come and go as she pleases.

I loved that as the story was progressing we got to learn a lot more about Marcie and Flint. I loved that these two ended up forming the most unlikely friendship. Goes to prove that I think things happen for a reason. Who they were just added more to the story. Nothing was left unturned.

I should also mention that a little side story in the book was the turtle and the turtle’s eggs that were on the beach. I loved how Flint who was watching out for this all the time taught Marie about them. It was an interesting side story. I think the story of how turtles lay their eggs on the beach and when they are hatched how they know exactly where to go is amazing. Nature is beautiful and remarkable.

I highly recommend this book.

Words burn bright in this joyful celebration of rap, creativity, and self-expression.

“Welcome to the cypher!

Now huddle up nice and snug.

You feel that circle around you?

Well, that’s a hip hop hug!”

Starting with beatboxes and fingersnaps, an exuberant narrator introduces kids in his community to the powerful possibilities of rap, from turning “a simple phrase/into imagery that soars” to proclaiming, “this is a voice that represents me!” As Khodi Dill’s rhymes heat up, the diverse crew of kids—illustrated in Awuradwoa Afful’s bold, energetic style—gain self-confidence and a sense of freedom in this wonderful picture book debut that is perfect for reading aloud.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank Annick Press for sending me a copy of the book. I recently took part in the Fall 2021 Indie Book Social and was able to select this book to read and review.

As you know I always love supporting Canadian talent on my blog and not only is Khondi Dill the author Canadian but so is the illustrator Awuradwoa Afful is as well.

The illustrations were bright and colorful and went with the text perfectly. Welcome to Cypher is a debut children’s book that was just recently released.

The narrator invites us the reader to join in with a group of kids as he explains what rap is and how to do it. The kids in the story then begin to experiment with words, beatboxing, and rhyming. They learn that words matter and that it’s okay to speak our minds. Having to speak your mind can be scary and intimidating but the kids do it anyway.

You definitely need to read this aloud as I found out. It’s a lot of fun especially if you are reading it like a rap. I think kids will enjoy reading this or having it read to them.

Holly St. Ives is in a rut. Once a celebrated artist making waves in New York City, she finds herself uninspired and unmotivated. After a near accident in Silverwood, she meets Nick, whom she learns is responsible for everything in the small town running like clockwork—including the upcoming Christmas festival and the town’s entry in the state-wide tree decorating contest. Holly doesn’t have time for Nick’s beguiling charm or mouth-watering holiday cupcakes, but after meeting his father, she discovers there’s more to the town’s obsession with the contest than meets the eye.

I absolutely loved reading Christmas in Silverwood. It definitely was an uplifting and heartwarming festive read. As I started the book I had a hard time putting it down and pretty much read it in one sitting. Dorothy is a new to me author and I definitely need to check out more of her books if they are anything like this.

Have you ever read a book and could envision it like a movie? As I was reading I could picture this as a Hallmark movie. Silverwood sounds like the perfect Christmas town from the decorations to the festival to the mountains and to the people. It’s been a few days since reading the book and I can still picture this cute little town.

Our main character is Holly and she is headed to the family cabin in Silverwood. She left the hustle and bustle of New York City to not only escape the ex that keeps calling her and wanting to get back together but her failing art career as well. Holly was at the top of her game for years with her art but it’s gradually nonexistent now. Unsure what to do she decides to head to the cabin for a vacation to get away from it all.

The first person Holly meets is Nick and that is due to an almost collision she had with his dog, Cupid that ran out in front of her car on the way to the cabin. You definitely know that Nick will become the person of interest for Holly and you can’t help but root for this romance to happen. Right from the very moment, they meet for a second time you can see the sparks ignite. I loved Holly and Nick’s interactions together.

I love Holly as she is just that kind of character you want to be friends with. There was just something I found about her that was genuine. She realizes her mistakes and quickly wants to fix them especially when it comes to Lucy. She knows she was wrong in their friendship and wants to fix it.

I love Nick who appears to be a jack of all trades. There is nothing this guy can’t do from baking to helping out on the tree farm to volunteering in his community. He definitely is a hard worker and is always there for his community. I got the impression that Nick was a big softy, sexy, and very intriguing. Nick definitely piqued my interest and wanted to know more about him.

Will the magic of Silverwood convince Holly to stay or will she decide to move on after the holiday are over?

I highly recommend this if you’re looking for that holiday romance that has all those feels. I am even contemplating buying a finished copy of the book when it’s released.

Before I begin my review I quickly want to thank Xpresso Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this book blitz and for graciously providing a eGalley of the book so that I could read it for my review today.

This is the fourth book in the Seasonal Singles series from Canadian author Michelle Cornish. The previous titles are Saving My Spring Fling, Snagging My Summer Love, and Faking My Fall Crush. They are all standalone quick-read books that can be read pretty much in one sitting which I did on a rainy Saturday.

After I read Warming My Winter Heart I instantly went and bought the previous ebooks. If they are anything like this one I am sure I will love them. I definitely want to read more of Michelle’s books in the future.

Our main character Lexi is originally from a small little town called Little City in British Columbia but currently lives in LA. She works in public relations that deal with hockey players when they misbehave. She is going back to Little City for Christmas but to also attend the funeral of her ex but little does she know it’s all a hoax. It’s her mother’s way of trying to get Lexi home for Christmas. What will Lexi do when she finds her ex is really not dead and her mother is behind it all?

Lexi is furious with her mother and leaves to the only place she knows and that’s her friend, Briar. Although when she gets there, Briar and her husband are rushing out the door to catch a flight to Toronto for a family emergency. Lexi is asked to take care of their puppy and to help John with the tree farm.

As you are reading you can’t help but wonder if sparks will fly between Lexi and John. I thought their interactions were cute. I know I was definitely rooting for a romance to develop. Will there or won’t there be?

Will Lexi be able to forgive her mother and understand where she is coming from?

I really enjoyed this super sweet story and it’s the perfect book to read to get into the holiday spirit.

EXCERPT:

Before long, Mom has dinner on the table, and when we’re seated, she says grace. Mom’s always loved going to church on Christmas Eve, but after her big fight with Aunt Flora, she started going every Sunday and doing things like saying grace.

Dad gives me a fully loaded, sideways look that says, “Yeah, your mother still hasn’t talked to your aunt and we still do these things to make it okay in her eyes.” I give him a nod. Does he know what they fought about that Christmas? He took a misdirected punch while he and Ian pulled Mom and her sister apart. That was before Ian became the biggest boob on the planet. Ugh.

“Oh, Lexi, I almost forgot.” Mom draws my attention back to the present. She grabs a box from the kitchen. “I got Christmas crackers.” Ooh. Seems hardly worth it for the three of us, but I do love Christmas crackers. Their gold and silver foil shines as Mom hands one to Dad and me then places one next to her own plate.

I look inside the cracker for the pull tab and grip it firmly then cross my arms, offering the Christmas cracker to Mom on my right and reaching for Dad’s cracker with my right hand.

“Ready?” Mom says. I’m transported back in time as I nod then Mom issues her standard Christmas cracker instructions. “On three. One . . . two . . . three!”

We all pull hard on our crackers against each other and our three little crackers pop and snap while bits of ripped paper scatter across the table. If Mom and Dad had a cat, it would have run for cover.

“Ooh, look,” Mom says. “I got a magnifying glass.” An urge to make a snarky comment about Mom’s eyesight and “how did the Christmas elves know?” pops into my head, but I let it go. I just got here, no need to start a fight just yet.

I check the table for my prize while Dad holds up a giant sparkly paperclip. “Not sure what this is about,” he says.

“It’s a bookmark, dear.” Mom touches Dad’s hand as she says it. She must have splurged on the premium crackers that encourage you to spend more money by showing you on the back of the package what you’ll get.

Something shiny catches my eye on the floor. “Ooh,” I say, leaning over in my chair to pick up my prize. “I got a pen.” I hold it up like it’s some kind of trophy. At least it’s something useful. I place it on the table right next to the fuschia paper crown that also spewed forth from the Christmas cracker.

“Put on your crown.” Mom flutters her hand in my direction. She’s already wearing hers. Dad somehow “accidentally” ripped his, so it won’t stay on his head. Lucky guy. I put on the crown. My cheeks burn a bit, and I feel like I’m ten again—the last year I remember actually liking these silly crowns. I scan the table hoping a bottle of wine has materialized in the last few minutes. Nope.

Blog Tour & Review: The Wedding Ringer

Blog Tour & Review: The Wedding RingerThe Wedding Ringer by Kerry Rea
Published by Berkley Books on November 9, 2021
Pages: 368
Goodreads

A woman who wants nothing to do with love or friendship finds both in the unlikeliest ways in this hilarious and heartwarming debut by Kerry Rea.

Once upon a time, Willa Callister was a successful blogger with a good credit score, actual hobbies, and legs that she shaved more than once a month. But after finding her fiancé in bed with her best friend, she now spends her days performing at children's birthday parties in a ball gown that makes her look like a walking bottle of Pepto Bismol. Willa dreams of starting fresh, where no one knows who she used to be, but first she needs to save up enough money to make it happen.

Maisie Mitchell needs something too: another bridesmaid for her wedding. After a chance encounter at a coffee shop, Maisie offers to pay Willa to be in her bridal party. Willa wants nothing to do with weddings--or Maisie--but the money will give her the freedom to start the new life she so badly desires.

Willa's bridesmaid duties thrust her into Maisie's high-energy world and into the path of hotshot doctor Liam Rafferty. But as Willa and Maisie form a real friendship, and Liam's annoyingly irresistible smile makes her reconsider her mantra that all men are trash, Willa's exit strategy becomes way more complicated. And when a secret from Maisie's past threatens to derail the wedding, Willa must consider whether friendship--and romance--are worth sticking around for.

Before I begin my review I quickly want to thank Penguin Random House USA for sending me a eGalley of the book to read for my tour stop today.

The Wedding Ringer is Kerry Rea’s debut novel.

I know I probably say this constantly in my posts but two of my favorite things are getting pitched fantastic books by publicists, (I love hearing about books that I might not normally have heard about) and then being able to be a part of a blog tour to promote those said books here on my blog.

As soon as I started to read The Wedding Ringer I was instantly hooked and had a hard time putting it down. I may or may not have spent the day reading this yesterday. It was a pretty quick read for me. I will definitely be picking up Kerry’s future books as soon as they come out. I love discovering new authors.

I should let you know the main reason I wanted to read this was that Willa, our main character was a blogger and after “the incident” lost everything and basically did a downward spiral. She didn’t have the desire to write blog posts anymore. Willa had it all, a successful blogger that had a following, a best friend she has had forever, and the perfect fiance. Everything was perfect up until a few weeks before the wedding when Willa discover he was cheating on her. To make matters worse it was with her best friend. She caught them in the act. Willa was heartbroken and was struggling to get over the loss of her relationship with not only her finance but her best friend as well.

Since then Willa lives with her sister and family. She works as a kids entertainer as Princess Sparkleheart and that doesn’t exactly go as planned because her last gig was a disaster. She sees her ex-best friend at this party and some random guy ends up laughing at her as she is trying to make her getaway.

Then one day while sitting in a cafe waiting for her date to show up, in rushes a woman, Maise asking to have a seat at her table. She then proceeds to ask Willa a huge favor because Willa is the only one that can help her. She needs a friend and is willing to pay. At first, Willa is not so sure about this but after Maise shows up at her sister’s house she figures she has nothing to lose. It’s a win-win situation for them both. Then this leads to Willa being asked to be a bridesmaid at her wedding. I was curious about Maise and was always wondering why she needed to pay someone to be her friend. We realize that there is more to Maise’s story than anyone knows and as the book progresses we finally get her story.

I have to admit that I did feel bad for Maise because she was getting married to a prestigious family and looking in you think it’s the perfect family and Maise just wants to fit in and be loved even though she is letting her soon-to-be mother-in-law run the whole show. Maise is not happy with the choices being made. I was practically yelling at the book saying come on Maise it’s your wedding. But I do get where she was coming from as I could relate. I had some people offering their ideas on how my wedding should be.

Another key character is Liam. It turns out that Liam was that random guy laughing at Willa. You can instantly see Willa wants nothing to do with him but it always seems like he is always right there at the right times. Will Willa be able to let bygones be bygones and give Liam the chance he so deserves or will she let her ex have that power over her?

Can Willa pull it off being the pretend friend at this wedding? Or is she realizing that Maise is just what she needs in her life? Will it take Maise’s breakdown for it all to come together?

Britta didn’t plan on falling for her personal trainer, and Wes didn’t plan on Britta. Plans change and it’s unclear if love, career, or both will meet them at the finish line.

Britta Colby works for a lifestyle website, and when tasked to write about her experience with a hot new body-positive fitness app that includes personal coaching, she knows it’s a major opportunity to prove she should write for the site full-time.

As CEO of the FitMe app, Wes Lawson finally has the financial security he grew up without, but despite his success, his floundering love life and complicated family situation leaves him feeling isolated and unfulfilled. He decides to get back to what he loves—coaching. Britta’s his first new client and they click immediately.

As weeks pass, she’s surprised at how much she enjoys experimenting with her exercise routine. He’s surprised at how much he looks forward to talking to her every day. They convince themselves their attraction is harmless, but when they start working out in person, Wes and Britta find it increasingly challenging to deny their chemistry and maintain a professional distance.

Wes isn’t supposed to be training clients, much less meeting with them, and Britta’s credibility will be sunk if the lifestyle site finds out she’s practically dating the fitness coach she’s reviewing. Walking away from each other is the smartest thing to do, but running side by side feels like the start of something big.

Before I begin my review I quickly have to thank Penguin Random House USA for allowing me to be a part of this blog tour and for graciously sending a eGalley of The Fastest Way to Fall to read and review for my tour stop today.

This is Denise William’s second stand-alone book. How To Fail at Flirting was her debut novel.

After reading The Fastest Way to Fall, I instantly added How to Fail at Flirting to my Christmas wish list because I absolutely loved The Fastest Way to Fall. (I might have even added this book to my wishlist as well.) I was instantly hooked two chapters into the book.

The Fastest Way to Fall is about Britta and Wes. I loved Britta. She was the kind of main character I love. She was funny, smart, bold, determined, entertaining and so much more. I loved Wes too. He was sweet, caring, kind, and so much more. Wes would be the kind of guy I would instantly be drawn to. He is definitely boyfriend material.

Britta works for a lifestyle website as an assistant but she wants something more permanent. Every time she suggests something it feels like her boss always says no. Although this time when Britta proposes writing about one of the newest fitness apps she feels like this could be it, sadly as soon as she mentions it, it’s shut down until her rival Claire speaks up and suggests a twist on that. It will involve both Britta and Claire having to work together to write about two different fitness apps. They both will sign up and write about their experiences with it. In the end, the best one will be promoted. Will it be Britta or Claire?

Britta tackles FitMi Fitness because she likes what this app is about. It’s not all about weight loss but feeling happy and healthy. At first, she cares more about her story but quickly that changes. Little does she know but her coach is Wes the CEO of the company. Wes loved the answers to her replies in her questionnaire and decided to pick her as his client. He knows that someone will be writing about their experiences with the app but has no clue it’s Britta. It doesn’t take long before the two are sort of flirty with each other. You can see Wes trying to keep it professional because this goes against the rules of the app but he can’t help it.

As the two continue to talk via the app, they both realize that they enjoy their time together. They decide to take this off the app and work out together in real life. Will this be a good idea or a mistake waiting to happen?

As you read you begin to wonder will they or won’t they. I know as I was reading I kept thinking that and you can’t help but want it when two characters are invested in each other even though they have no idea who the other is and what they look like.

If you are curious to know you have to read the book to find out.
