Author Interview with Kelly Epperson (When Life Stinks, Its Time to Wash the Gym Clothes)

I recently took part in the Pump Up Your Book Promo Tour of Kelly Epperson’s book “When Life Stinks, Its Time to Wash the Gym Clothes”. My review can be read HERE

Here is a little info about Kelly:
Kelly Epperson has been dubbed “Every woman” and “Rare woman” in the same breath. Kelly’s style is uniquely her own, yet she can relate to all of us. Her weekly columns of life, real everyday life as well as travels through Europe, bring a warmth and a wit that we all long for.

Leaving her job at the IRS ten years ago (it was “sucking the life out of her”), she then embarked on a new career, and served as resident court jester, at a local nonprofit agency that taught English and reading to adults.

Kelly’s motto and quote that hangs over her desk is “To love what you do and feel that it matters – how could anything be more fun?!” After a year in France, Kelly returned to the states and launched a full time career of writer, ghostwriter, and speaker. Every day, she does the happy dance in her kitchen.

To maintain connection and spread a little joy with friends, family, and readers, Kelly recently started a weekly “happy mail” – When Life Stinks, Find Your Joy. To check it out, send Kelly an email to kel_epperson@yahoo.com.

Kelly lives in Loves Park, IL (city with a heart) with The Man of the Place, her two teenage sons, who are brilliant and witty of course, and a sweet dog Starburst who sheds like crazy. FYI-Kelly hates dog hair, hence, the essay, “It’s Not Easy Being Cruella DeVil.”

Here is my interview with Kelly. I hope you enjoy it.

Cindy: Kelly do you have another book in the works?

Kelly: I’ve got two in the idea stage: When Life Stinks, Go to France and When Life Stinks, Find Joy. I lived in France for a year and I have oodles more stories to tell that never made into my weekly newspaper columns. I also recently launched a joy network, a weekly enewsletter/magazine kind of thing and readers are asking for a book that captures the fun and flow of finding your joy.

Cindy, the two ideas for books sound really interesting. The finding your joy sounds really nice too. I will have to go and sign up for it. Do you have a link for the joy network?

Kelly: Sign up at www.whenlifestinks.com

Cindy: Of all the articles you write, do you have a favorite?

Kelly: I make the biggest chunk of my income from ghostwriting; I love meeting the people and telling their stories. I also freelance and enjoy that. Writing my column is my favorite though. I can write about whatever I want, not an assigned topic. The relationship with my readers is so rewarding. I have speaking gigs now that launched from being a columnist and I love it! I used to be afraid to speak in front of a group and now it is the best part of my career. I never imagined it could be so fun! Spreading a little joy in this kooky world. That’s why I started the weekly joy newsletter. I have more to share that I can’t fit in my weekly G-rated column, so every Friday I send a happy mail. Back to your question, the favorite articles are when I can make a reader laugh and give them something to think about in the same 600-word column.

Cindy: I agree I laughed when I was reading your book and some of the stories made me think too. What inspired you to put the articles into a book format?

Kelly: My beloved readers asked for a compilation of columns, so I finally decided to do it. The hardest part is selling it. I love my readers and want to give them all a book. And a hug. Sales and marketing is not my forte.

Cindy: I am sure all your readers will buy the book. Are the stories you write about based on someone you know, or events in your own life? How long have you been writing your weekly columns?

Kelly: The columns are snippets from my life and whatever is going on in the world around us. I’ve been writing a weekly since May 2001 and never run out of ideas. “Whatever pops into my head” would be an apt description. My smart car got stranded on an icy road recently so I wrote about it. This past year, I got a hug from Barack Obama, a kiss from Garrison Keillor, and I literally rubbed elbows with Dave Barry. I write about it all.

Cindy:I loved when I got the book in the mail, you also included a sample box of Tide. What made you think of doing that? That was a really great idea and I think it makes the connection that much greater.

Kelly: The credit for that goes to my creative friend, Mary. She thought: When life stinks, it’s time to wash the gym clothes; hmmm, to wash gym clothes, we need Tide. She made mini book covers for sample size Tide boxes. I love giving people a fun gift with the book.

Thank you to Kelly for doing the interview with me I had a blast reading the book and look forward to reading more of Kelly’s work. Thank you to Dorothy for asking me to do this. It was fun and looking forward to working with you again.

TITLE: Sister Wife
AUTHOR: Shelley Hrdlitschka
PUB DATE: October 2008
ISBN: 978-1-55143-927-3

Thank You to Shelley for sending me this book to read. I love it. I had a hard time putting it down. This is Shelley’s third book. She is a best selling author and lives right here in Canada. This is my first book by Shelley. Looking forward to reading her other two books.

The book is about Three girls who live in Unity. Its a polygamy sect.

Celeste is born and raised in Unity. She is struggling to fit into Unity. She is finding it hard to cope with the fact that once she is 15 years old she will be assigned a older husband and becoming a sister wife. She doesn’t want to do anything that will bring shame upon her family by refusing to marry. Even though she is in love with Jon she won’t rebel. Jon leaves the movement because he was seen kissing Celeste. The prophet then assignes Jon’s father, Martin, to be Celeste’s husband. Will this announcement push Celeste to run away?.

Celeste meets Craig an outsider who has been making Inuksuk, rock sculptures on the beach. Her and Craig begin to get close and when he tells her he is leaving one day, she becomes upset. What will Celeste do?

Nanette is Celeste’s younger sister and she is the ideal sister wife. She longs to be married and to be a sister wife. She has her eyes set on Martin and thinks she would make a perfect wife for him. When she spots Celeste with Jon, she runs right to their father and tells him everything. She thinks she is doing good until the day she finds out that Celeste is going to marry Martin. She is upset and angry. She wonders if Celeste was to leave would she she finally gets to get marry the man she has dreamed about, Martin and have his children?

Taviana is an outsider that was allowed to stay at Unity. She is a girl with a troubled family and past and Jacob brought her back to Unity to help her out. She has adjusted to life in Unity. Then when cops show up Taviana is hidden and when the cops leave the Prophet tells her she must leave at once. They don’t want the cops poking around and disturbing life there.

If Celeste leaves Unity will Jon and her be together again? I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommended it.

Fall into reading 2008 Wrap Up

The Fall into Reading Challenge that was hosted by Katrina of Callapidder Days ended yesterday, December 20th. This is the first challenge that I’ve signed up for and took part in and I have to say that I didn’t do too good. Here’s my original list:

Fiction:
Matrimony by Joshua Henkin read this 05/10/08
Somebody else’s daughter by Elizabeth Brundage read this 25/10/08
The story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
Written in Blood by Sheila Lowe
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Change of heart by Jodi Picoult
The time traveler’s wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky
Three Cups of Tea
A thousand Splendid Suns

Biography:
Loosing it by Valerie Bertinelli
My Real life by Brett Hart

Did you finish reading all the books on your fall reading list? If not, why not?

Sadly I only got to read 2 books off my list: Matrimony and Somebody Else’s Daughter. The reason for not reading the books on my list was I got new books in the mail. The rest of the books were books I purchased and I had only started blogging when I joined the challenge. I was over whelmed with books.

Did you stick to your original goals or did you change your list as you went along?

I did stick with my original goals, but I should have made adjustments when new books were coming in.

What was your favorite book that you read this fall? Least favorite? Why?

My favorite books that I read this fall would be Tomato Girl, Sister Wife and We take This Man. My least favorite would be More by Austin Clarke. I had a hard time to get into so I stopped reading it. It wasn’t my thing.

Did you learn something new because of the Fall Into Reading challenge — something about reading, or yourself, or a topic you read about?

I learned that I need to stick with my list and not get distracted from it and if need be its okay to make changes to lists.

Would you like to participate in another challenge here this spring?

Yes I probably will take part. I need to be more focused on work on my goals. Next year my goal is to complete this challenge.

Review: Lady Flatterley

TITLE: Lady Flatterley
AUTHOR: Linda Wagner
PUB DATE: 2008
ISBN: 978-1-4327-3233-2

Thank You to Linda for sending me this book to read and review. My son loved the book. Jerry Hanzel did the layout with his photography. All the background pictures were realistic. The artwork was done by Pearl L. Ollie.

The book is about a shy caterpillar named Lady Flatterley. Who hides in a tree all the time. She dreams of becoming a butterfly. One day she meets a butterfly and the butterfly tells her that one day she will be a butterfly too. Then as winter came she builds her cocoon. When spring came and Lady Flatterley tried to get out but couldn’t she called for help. No one would help her cause they knew when she was ready she would come out. When she was ready she broke out of the cocoon and was amazed at how pretty she was. She was a beautiful butterfly.

Review: Queen Vernita’s Visitors

TITLE: Queen Vernita’s Visitors
AUTHOR: Dawn Menge
PUB DATE: May 2008
ISBN:978-1-59800-714-5

My son really enjoyed receiving and reading this book with me.

The book is about Queen Vernita and she realized when she is looking at the calendar that its been twelve months since she has seen her friends. So she sents out twelve invitations to twelve friends inviting them to come visit her for a month each.

Each month a friend comes and stays the whole month and they do different things different days of the week.

This is a great educational book. It teaches about the months of year and how many there is, how many days are in a month and the days of the week and what they are. Its a great teaching tool and after reading this my son has asked alot of quesiton about it.

Review: When Life Stinks, Its Time to Wash the Gym Clothes

TITLE: When Life Stinks, Its Time to Wash the Gym Clothes
AUTHOR: Kelly Epperson
PUB DATE: April 2008
ISBN:978-0-9796634-2-0

Thank you to Dorothy and Kelly for sending me this book to read and review. Join Kelly Epperson as she virtually tours the blogosphere in December on her first virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book Promotion. Thanks again Dorothy for asking me to be a part of this tour.

The book is a compilation of Kellys articles that have appeared in various newspapers. Its a humorous book that takes about life, getting older, fashion, parenting and world events such as the death of Princess Diana and 9/11.

When I read “Are You Wearing The Wrong Size?” JC Penney said that 8 in 10 people are wearing the wrong size bra. Wow that is alot of people wearing the wrong size and how did they know that?

This was a great funny read that will have you laughing right along with the book. I really could relate to this book. I admit I was one of those girls who wore sweat pants with the letters across my butt back in the day. I was also the girl who would never wear a hat no matter how cold it was.

If your looking for a last minute gift idea for any woman on your list then I really suggest this book.

“A Day to be thankful” was a cute and funny story of the things Kelly is thankful for. What I am thankful for is for Kelly stopping by to visit my blog and the book I got from her. Thanks Kelly!
