Stealing Home Tour

PUB DATE: April 2009

It’s 1905 and the Chicago Cubs are banking on superstar Donald “Duke” Dennison’s golden arm to help them win the pennant. Only one thing stands between Duke and an unprecedented ten thousand dollar contract: alcohol.

That’s when sportswriter David Voyant whisks Duke to the one-horse town of Picksville, Missouri, so he can sober up in anonymity. He bides his time flirting with Ellie Jane Voyant, his unofficial chaperone, who would rather hide herself in the railway station ticket booth than face the echoes of childhood taunts.

Ned Clovis, the feed store clerk, has secretly loved Ellie Jane since childhood, but he loves baseball and the Duke almost as much–until he notices Ellie Jane may be succumbing to the star’s charm.

Then there’s Morris, a twelve-year-old Negro boy, whose only dream is to break away from Picksville. When Duke discovers his innate talent for throwing a baseball, Morris might just have found his way out.

Four individuals, each living in haunted isolation, each harboring a secret passion. Providence brings them together. Tragedy threatens to tear them apart. Will love be enough to bring them home?

Holly’s Inbox Review

PUB DATE: June 1, 2009

Have you ever wanted to read someone else’s emails? I am sure deep down you wanted to or perhaps you have. We are curious by nature. Remember that old saying about curiosity killed the cat?

Well in case you ever wanted to read someone else’s inbox now you have the chance. You need to pick up this book, you won’t be disappointed.

Holly’s Inbox is about Holly Denham and she is a 29 year old, (inexperienced) receptionist working at Huerst and Wright. They are a huge financial Institute.

The book is written in email form. The emails are between Holly and a wide range of characters that are family, friends and coworkers. There is always a section with emails from Trish and Toby. Trish is her coworker and Toby is an ex boyfriend.

The emails span over a 5 month period while Holly is adjusting to a new job, a secret love affair with a VP, the return of her ex, family problems and a backstabbing coworker.

Out of all the characters in the book I truly loved her grandmother. The grandmother just got set up with a computer and learning about the web. She emails Holly and before Holly knows it her grandmother is signing her up for cheap flights (so that Holly will visit more) and to dating sites. Can you imagine your grandmother doing that to you? Thankfully I don’t have to worry about that.

The only thing the book lacked was when they mentioned attachments they didn’t include that in the book but you can check out hhtp://www.hollysinbox.com to see them.

Before the book there was a website http://www.hollysinbox.com and it became a huge it with thousands of people logging on to read what was happening next as it was done on a daily bases. It became so popular that they made it into this book. The emails were collected and printed.

You can also see Holly’s MySpace page here http://www.myspace.com/Hollysinbox

Thank you to Danielle at Sourcebooks for sending me this book to read. I am so happy that I did. I am loving British chicklit more and more. When I first got the book I was a little nervous wondering how would I ever read this because its 665 pages. Don’t let that fool you because once you start reading it, the book is a breeze. Its a little and fun read. Be prepared for some laughing moments.

Also Thanks again to Bill for doing the interview with me and for stopping by to comment on the interview. Can’t wait to see what happens next to Holly.

Holly’s Inbox Author Interview and Giveaway

Its not very often that I get the chance to interview an author so when I do get the chance I am all excited and wonder about questions to ask in hopes that I am not going to ask the same questions they have been asked a million times before.

Today the author of Holly’s Inbox, Bill Surie has graciously stopped by to answer a few questions about Holly’s Inbox and much more.

Cindy: At some point we are all curious and would love the chance to be able to read someones inbox. I admit that I would love to read a few people’s inboxes. If you could read one person’s email who would it be and why?

Bill: Kim Jong in North Korea – like most people I’d like to know what he’s playing at.

Cindy: If you are wondering who Kim Jong is, he is North Korea’s leader.

Cindy: You have been touring Holly’s Inbox alot recently are you surprised at the reaction you are getting for it?

Bill: Yes, every day I seem to get some good news. It’s going to be such a come down when it’s over, but at the moment it’s like YAAAAAAAYYYYY YIPEEE everyday.

Cindy: Do you feel there has been a shift in the reviewing process? (Ie newspaper, books etc)

Bill: A massive shift yes, I didn’t realize quite how it’s all changed. I think it’s good, it means as an author you’re actually talking to people who have read your book (more often than not) and who love reading, so passionately they have started a blog. I think SOME people in magazines are doing it just as a job, nothing more, so it’s a little clinical.

Cindy: Do you have any future books in the works? And if so are you able to share with us what it is or about? Is there a possibility there will be a book 2 to Holly?

Bill: I do, there’s a second Holly – can’t really share a lot with you as it will ruin it.

Cindy: I can’t wait. When and Why did you begin writing?

Bill: I began writing when I was about 22. I tried doing stand-up comedy but everyone said I looked like I was just reading a script. I was and it got even worse when I got heckled; I’d lose my place and you could see me staring at this imaginary script in space, almost using my finger to find the line again. I was awful. Really really bad. I tried writing books, but to be completely honest – all the description was beyond me. I lost my flow. The only thing I can do is hear people talking and writing – speech. That’s all and if I have to stop for description I lose it completely. I love writing speech though, I love getting wrapped up their world and my characters seem to be much funnier than I ever could be. I have total confidence in them saying the right thing at the right time.

Cindy: As people are just discovering this book and you, what would a person be surprised to discover about you?

Bill: It was a secret – but I think it’s pretty much out now – that I’m a chap – happily married with a gorgeous 2 year old daughter.

Cindy: Where there any real people you modeled your characters after? (Holly, James, Trish)

Bill: Lez and Trish – are based on a couple of real friends of mine. Although none of the anecdotes about them are real – their characters are, and the way they argue but love each other – that’s all them. Also my Granny – was exactly like that, she was hysterical (she did actually do the dancing thing – exactly as it was in the book – if you know what I mean) and I will miss her hugely.

Cindy: Readers, if you want to know what Bill is talking about you need to read the book to find out. Who was your favorite character to write about?

Bill: Jason – I began to enjoy writing his character so much he made me laugh every time, he’s so upbeat and optimistic.

Cindy: I thought Jason was really fun and he just made the book that much more fun to read. I read that there was talk of Holly’s Inbox being made into a series, is that still going to happen and if so will it only air there or do you think they will bring it world wide?

Bill: I have no idea – it’s at quite a tricky stage but budgets are tight these days everywhere even in TV. I would like to say yes – I HOPE SO – WOW can you imagine!! I’ll come over it does and we’ll all go out and celebrate in a bar somewhere!

Cindy: That sounds good Bill. I am going to hold you to that deal. HAHA! Would you like to say something to my readers?

Bill: Yes, I hope you like it, I hope it makes you laugh because that means the most to me. However I was thinking the other day, remembering writing the sadder parts – a lot of previous heartbreak went into it. Ok, so I hope it makes you laugh and cry – a lot. Yes, and you finish reading it with a big warm smile on your face.

X Holly/Bill

I just want to say Thank You to Bill for taking the time out of his busy schedule to stop by Cindy’s Love of Books. I really appreciate you answering my questions today.

Amish Cook at Home Review and Recipe

PUB DATE: November 2008

Thank You to Tammie at Andrews McMeel for sending me this great cookbook. I couldn’t wait for this to come in. I love it. Isn’t the cover pretty?

I am in awe of the Amish community, their way of life and how they are able to shun modern technology to life a plain and simple life.

Amish Cook at Home is a great cookbook. The recipes in the book are all structured around the four seasons of the year which influences Amish life and cooking. All the recipes are based on what they have access to in each season. The even preserve vegetables etc for the off season months.

The book also talks about the history and culture. There are stories about the Old Order days and glimpses into how they prepare for weddings, funerals and tax time. Yes the Amish pay there taxes. Lovina talks about the holidays and how they celebrate them such as Mother’s Day (some Amish observe it and others don’t. They give their mothers plants or poems. Nothing fancy.)Easter is observed but Halloween isn’t. The kids don’t go trick or treating. With Christmas the Amish don’t recognize Santa Claus. The children know its make believe.

The pictures in the book are beautiful from the children’s drawings to scenery to animals to the various rooms in a house etc. Its a well crafted book. One that will be treasured and used always.

There is over 100 recipes in the book and to date I have made Parmesan chicken (which was really good and simple to make) Easy Baked Whole chicken, fresh ground beef supper (this has been Michael’s favorite dish to date and I have made it numerous times with changes added to the recipe) poor man’s steak, and farmer’s breakfast.

What I love about the recipes in the book is that its things most of us have in our cupboards and pantry already. No fancy ingredients that you have to go store to store in search of. They are healthy and nutritious at the same time.

If you would like to buy the book you can go to Andrews McMeels site and order it.

RECIPE: Fresh Ground Beef Supper

1 pound of ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 pound of tomatoes diced
1/2 cup white long grain rice
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground pepper
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Preheat oven to 350.

In a large skillet brown the beef. Drain grease and add onion and bell pepper. Stir in tomatoes, rice, chili powder, salt, and pepper and heat thoroughly.

Pour the mixture into a greased 8 cup casserole dish. Cover and bake for 50 minutes. Sprinkle the cheese evenly on top and bake uncovered for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and casserole is bubbling.

My notes: Since making this recipe the first time I have made it once without the cheese and it was good. I have also added more bell peppers and mushrooms to the recipe and it still tasted the same. I also discovered that greasing the casserole dish made for easy clean up. Enjoy.

Last month (May) I made my very first ever guest appearence. My guest post can be seen at Maw Books. Don’t they look yummy?

I have to admit I was very nervous in sending my post over to Natasha. I had so many thoughts going through my head as I was typing it, Would it be okay? Did it make sense? Is that what Natasha was looking for? Plus many more thoughts. I had to keep reminding myself that this was my first guest post and I would learn from any mistake I made. Thankfully when Natasha emailed me I felt much better.

If you have never checked out Natasha’s blog then you really should. She is a super friendly blogger with gorgeous children which you can see when Natasha vlogs.

Thanks Natasha for allowing me to be a part of your blog and looking forward to getting to know you more.

Frenchman’s Creek Review

PUB DATE: March 2009 (reprinted)

I have heard Daphne Du Maurier but never read any of her books. I haven’t read anything by her before as they are historical fiction. As many of you know historical fiction isn’t a genre that I normally read. I have to say I don’t know why I don’t read it as there is no real reason why. I have tried several times to read historical fiction but about 50 pages in I always abandon the book.

When Danielle at Sourcebooks offered me Frenchman’s Creek, I figured I would try it out and perhaps this would be the book that would get me hooked on historical fiction. The book description sounded really good and I think that is another reason I jumped at the chance to review it. When the book came in I started to read it right away.

I have to say that I love the cover.

Frenchman’s Creek is set in the 17th century in London, England. Lady St. Columb is the main character. From the name you know assume that she is well do and she is just that but she is also a bored housewife with kids and is falling out of love with her husband. Can we say midlife crisis’s? She wants a change in her life. Her husband adores her and allows her to go to their estate in Cornwall to figure things out. She takes the kids and heads to Cornwall. On the way there she thinks that it will be quiet and peaceful but suddenly realizes it will be anything but quiet and peaceful as there is a ship anchored in the water off the property.

Lady St. Columb discovers a mysterious man (Jean-Beniot Aubrey) who she becomes intrigued by. He makes her laugh, smile and feel alive. When she discovers that he is really the pirate that is terrorizing her neighbors she knows she should end things with him but she can’t she is already attracted to him and he is attracted to her. It turns into a bitter sweet love affair.

The only thing wrong is the nosey neighbors as they threaten Lady St. Columb’s happiness and her life. What will she do when Lord St Columb comes to the estate?
