Canada Day Blog Hop Give Away

Today is the day that the first annual Canada Day Blog Hop starts. Thanks to Chrystal and Aislynn for being the host of this.

I was going to go shopping and send something but I thought about it and I have decided that I will be using the Book Depository instead. I think it will make things much easier.

So for my give away for one lucky reader you will be able to pick a book from one of these authors: Louise Penny, Kelley Armstrong, Catherine McKenzie, Robert Rotenberg, Lesley Livingston, Lucy Maud Montegomery or any other Canadian author.

Please note that I am only going to offer this to one Canadian reader. Just leave me a comment with the book you would want to win and why along with your email address so that I can contact you should you be the winner.

In the mean time you can check out the other 34 blogs Canadian bloggers to see what they have to say.

Happy Birthday Canada.

It’s Monday What are you reading? #25

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers to see what they have read and what they are reading this week.

The wonderful host of this weekly meme is Shelia from Book Journey. You can check out Sheila’s blog to find out all the details on how to take part in this fun weekly meme. Although I should warn you that this can lead to an ever increasing TBR pile, wishlist or borrowed books from the library.

My currents reads last week were:

I read and finished The Mistaken Masterpiece and reviewed that last week and I am almost done Wake Unto me.

Also last week I ended up reading:

Both are graphic novels I borrowed from the library.

This week I am going to be reading:

Alot more reading will be done now since Michael is officially on summer vacation and he has swimming lessons Monday to Thursday in the morning so I will be able to read a bit there as well as well as other times.

It feels good to be on vacation but that still means getting up early. I was lucky that Michael slept in till almost 9am this morning. I know that won’t happen much but I will take what I can get.

So what have you read this past week and what are you reading this week?

Local Blogger Meet Up

On Sunday I got to meet up with the my usual local book bloggers, Tina, Avis, Donna and Linda sadly Amanda was unable to attend because she was out of town.

It was great to see everyone as a group again because its been awhile since we have gotten together as a group. So it was nice to catch up and talk about Canada Post going back to work, Tina’s trip to the US, Donna’s trip to NYC and BEA, books, school, work etc. You name it we probably talked about it.

Sadly I have to admit that I didn’t really enjoy our little tea shop as much as I use to. We have been going there from the beginning (almost 3 years now) and it seems like the service is getting much slower, although when Donna and I walked in were were pounced upon right away and it seemed like she was in a rush to get our orders, the price has gone up and the portions seem smaller. There was even one point where the girl came to the table to tell us we have to be quieter which I thought was a little surprising but yea okay. Plus she forgot to give me my second drink that I ordered.

Anyways. I did come home with a few books and I was going to wait to post them in my mailbox post on Saturday (July 2nd) but I think I will do this now (even though I am writing this on Monday I am posting it on Sunday) because the government has forced a back to work ruling and all Canada Post employees are told to go back to work today (Monday) so mail will be delivered on Tuesday. Plus I had two couriers deliver today (4 books) so I am thinking that this could be a busy book week.

Here is the books that made there way home with me:

From Linda

From Avis

-Marilou Polaire et le petit pois by Raymonde Plante
-Le Zloukch by Dominique Demers, Ill by Fanny

From Tina

The cover version that I have is not the same as the one shown here.

So those are all the great book goodies that came home with me. I am super excited to read them all very soon. Michael has already read one of the books from Avis and is starting the second one. (The french ones were for Michael).

It was great to see everyone again.

Now my next blogger meet up post will be much different because several new to me bloggers have organized a lunch time event in July. It will be roughly 15+ bloggers in total meeting up and many will be for the first time which I am excited about because some of these blogs I have been following for a while now so it will be nice to meet face to face finally and of course there will a few pics that I will be trying to post or snagging from other bloggers.

Canada Day Blog Hop

I recently heard about this great idea when I met Chrystal from Snow Drop Dreams through Armchair BEA. I promised her that I would sign up and I know I am late in doing so but thankfully Aislynn from Knit Purl Stitch reminded my on twitter about this. Thank you Aislynn.

Anyways, In honor of Canada Day that is happening July 1st, both Aislynn and Chrystal have organzied a Canada Day Blog Hop that will be happening between June 29th and July 2nd.

As of right now I am not 100% sure what my give away will be but I am thinking perhaps a middle grade Canadian author book or a YA Canadian author book. It will most defintely be by a Canadian author. Plus I will be throwing in some other Canadian goodies.

This give away will be for Canadians only with a valid mailing address please no PO Boxes. So just leave a comment and let me know what your favorite Canada Day activity is along with your email address.

As of right now I have no idea what is happening with Canada Post and the lock out. If this lock out contines I will be forced to ship the prize win through either Fed Ex or UPS.

(Interview) Michael D. Beil & Give Away

I am super excited to have Michael D. Beil stop by Cindy’s Love of Books today. If you remember yesterday I reviewed his book The Mistaken Masterpiece.

Recently I was lucky enough to interview him. So without further hesitation please help me welcome Michael D. Beil.

Thanks so much for stopping by Michael and allowing me to interview you.

Why did you decide to write a series of detective books for girls?

I teach at a girls’ school in Manhattan, and the idea for the first book (which opens with Sophie looking out the classroom window and screaming) grew out of an actual incident. Before The Red Blazer Girls, I had written a couple of (unpublished) novels for adults, but my wife convinced me that my “voice” was a better fit for a younger audience. She was right, of course. The detective part came out of my own love of mysteries – everything from Encyclopedia Brown to Sherlock Holmes to Kurt Wallender.

Are you currently working on anything new? If so anything you can share with the readers?

At the moment, I’m working on the fourth Red Blazer Girls book, set during the two weeks before Christmas. I’m also very excited about the non-Red Blazer Girls book that’s in copy editing as I write this. It’s more of a coming of age/adventure story about a boy who spends his summer vacation at the lake where his dad spent his summers. He learns a little about himself, about his dad, and about life. I would tell you the title, but my editor and I still haven’t settled on the final final title. I can tell you that the working title was The Seaweed Strangler, which is the name of the movie the protagonist is making . . . which also happens to be the name of the movie I made when I was 12.

What was your favorite part of The Mistaken Masterpiece?

That’s a tough one. The big “switcheroo” scene at the end was a lot of fun, and putting those crazy words in Prunella’s big mouth was a total blast, but I would probably choose the scene where Sophie and Livvy are stuck in the elevator. That was one of those rare scenes that worked out just the way I’d imagined it back in the outlining phase.

What would be one thing you would want a reader to take away from your book?

One word:

What would be the one book and movie you would recommend that one has to read and watch?

I know it’s the pat answer, but I think everyone should read To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus Finch is one of the greatest characters (and human beings) in all of literature. Since I picked an “old” book, I’ll go with new movie: Super 8, which is in theaters right now. It’s the first “big” movie since The Lord of the Rings that I really enjoyed. I just love the way it portrays the excitement, innocence, hopefulness, and anything-is-possible-ness of youth.

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my all time favorite books. I remember having to read it in high school and I feel in love with the book. I ended up buying my own copy. If you were stranded on a deserted island what would be the top three must haves you would want?

A copy of Great Expectations, my cello (I’m guessing that I’d have time to practice as much as I should), and a fountain pen and a mountain of paper.

I have never read Great Expectations but I am thinking I will have to pick it up one day soon to read. I am going to NYC again next year and what would be your top three things to see and do would you say I should see and do?

If you’re a dog person like me, I recommend a stroll through Central Park early in the morning. Before 9:00, dogs are permitted to be off-leash, and you will be amazed at how many dogs live in Manhattan – and how well they get along. Usually. If you’re really ambitious, walk up to the Conservatory Garden and find the Secret Garden statue from the final scene in The Mistaken Masterpiece.

And even if you’re not an art lover, you have to go to the Metropolitan Museum. (You can go right after your walk in the park!) Every time I go, it’s all I can do to keep myself from walking out with a Winslow Homer tucked under my arm.

Finally, find a “real New York” restaurant (away from the Midtown hotels) where the tables are so close you have no choice but to have a conversation with your neighbors. That’s a quintessential New York experience!

Michael. I didn’t make it to Central Park last year but that is on my to see
list along with the museum next year. I have seen pictures of Central Park and I
just love them. Now I will have to go and visit the Secret Garden.

About Michael D. Beil:
He grew up in Andover, Ohio (pop. 1200), where he learned to sail, milk cows, tell the difference between hay and straw, and many other important lessons. He worked as a sailmaker and lawyer before finding his true calling in 1997: Teacher. Since 2001, he has taught English and drama at an all-girls Catholic high school in Manhattan, where he also wrote and produced Aftershocks, a play based on the challenges facing the immigrant families of some of his students. He lives in Manhattan with his wife Laura, dogs Isabel and Maggie, and cats Cyril and Emma.

When he is indoors, he loves cooking (anything French, especially!), playing the cello (not nearly as well as he’d like), and sinking his teeth into a really great book. Outdoors, he loves skiing, sailing, and hiking and camping.

You can find out more about Michael D. Beil by visiting his site.

Thanks so much again Michael for stopping by and allowing me to pick your brain. I know I stumped you on one of my interview questions. It was a pleasure to read and review your book and I am looking forward to reading your other books.

Give Away Time

I have to thank Knopf and Diane for allowing me to give away a copy of Michael’s latest book

Due to the current Canadian postal lockout I will have to allow this contest to be US only since nothing is coming into Canada.

The only thing that I require is that you have a valid mailing address (no PO Boxes) because the sponsor is shipping the book, not me. Please leave me a comment with a way to contact you and please note that you will have 48 hours to reply back to my email with your mailing address. Failure to do so will result in me picking another winner.

Happy St Jean Baptiste Day

Saint Jean Baptiste Day, held annually on June 24, is the feast day of St John the Baptist, a Jewish preacher who baptized Jesus in the River Jordan. It is a day of celebration in Quebec and other areas of French Canada. Saint Jean Baptiste Day is also known as “la Saint-Jean”, “St John the Baptist Day”, “Fête nationale du Québec” and “Quebec’s National Holiday”.

Wishing all my Quebec readers a Happy St Jean Baptiste Day today.

(Review) The Mistaken Masterpiece

Title: The Red Blazer Girls: The Mistaken Masterpiece (book 3)
Author: Michael D. Beil
Pub Date: June 2011
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Pages: 320
Format: Hard cover
Age Group: Middle Grade

Source: I received a ARC copy for my honest and sincere review.

About the book:
Sophie, Margaret, Becca, and Leigh Ann are back in an all-new Red Blazer Girls caper. In the third installment, Sophie is nose to fist with her arch-rival, Livvy, all while taking care of movie-star Nate Etan’s dog, when Father Julian hires the Blazers to help him authenticate a painting. Mayhem and mystery follows as the girls attempt to uncover the truth. Oh, and, uh, Sophie’s friend-who-is-not-a-boyfriend, Raf, is back. . . . Here’s another charming and engaging adventure starring these four every-girl sleuths that’s perfect for readers 10-up.

Growing up I have to say I never read Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys because it just never appealed to me so I never fully understood why they were such a hit with kids until I heard about The Red Blazer Girls series.

After reading The Mistaken Masterpiece, which just happens to be book three in the series and I just found out that there will be a book four coming out soon, I have to say I enjoyed it and I am thinking of going to Chapters very soon to pick up the previous two books to read them to get caught up. I was also planning on borrowing the first one on audiobook to bring on our trip to Chicago this summer. I think Michael would really enjoy listening to it.

Although I have to say I don’t think you need to read the previous books to follow along with the story because the girls solve a new mystery in each book but I have to say that once I read a book in a series I am always curious about the other books and do tend to read them.

Even though the book is about girls sleuths I am pretty sure that the boys will like it. There is enough sleuthing and adventure that it would peak any ones interest.

The book is written in the first person perspective by 12 year old Sophie. Sophie makes up one fourth of the Red Blazer Girls, the others are Margaret, Rebecca and Leigh.

As the story begins we see Sophie at her swim practice. She has a accident with her worst enemy Livvy. She accidental ends up with a broken nose. Although I think Sophie wonders if it was truly an accident.

Of course a broken nose is a curse to a young girl especially when she finds out that her father has spoken to none other then her celebrity crush Nate and that he has arranged it so they can meet him. Of course Sophie is very self conscious now because of the broken nose and I am sure we can all relate to that. Would you want to meet your celebrity crush with a broken nose?

Thankfully when she does get to meet Nate the meeting is brief and she is given a chance to do something that I am sure most girls with a crush would be dying to do just to get to know their crush a little more. I am sure I have even said a some point growing up with a celebrity that I would do anything.

Things are going good until Father John, a teacher at the school the girls go to, comes up to them with some more mysteries to solve. The first mystery is about a baseball, well two in fact. One is a real signed ball and the other is a fake. The girls must find out which one is the real one and which one is the fake one. I am sure that the boy readers would love this part of the book.

The next mystery is about a family heirloom, a painting by Pommeroy. The girls have to find out if this is a real painting or if its just a fake. The girls have to use a bunch of photographs to discover if its real and if the family who claim that its real and that they owned if from Pommeroy’s death in 1961. Will the girls be able to figure it out?

I want to thank Diane for contacting me about reviewing this book. I am so happy that I got the chance to read this and discover a new middle grade author. Looking forward to reading the previous books and all the upcoming books.
