BOOK SYNOPSIS

When the group of highwaymen headed by the disgraced Earl of Little Dean, Reynaud Ravensdale holds up the hoydenish Isabella Murray’s coach, she knocks one of them down and lectures them all on following Robin Hood’s example.

The rascally Reynaud Ravensdale – otherwise known as the dashing highwayman Mr Fox – is fascinated at her spirit.

He escaped abroad three years back following his supposedly shooting a friend dead after a quarrel. Rumour has it that his far more respectable cousin was involved. Now, having come back during his father’s last illness, the young Earl is seeking to clear his name of murder, even if he is living as an outlaw meanwhile.

Isabella’s ambitious parents are eager to marry her off to Reynaud Ravensdale’s cousin, the next in line to his title. The totally unromantic Isabella is even ready to elope with her outlaw admirer to escape this fate – on condition that he teaches her how to be a highwaywoman herself.

This hilarious spoof uses vivid characters and lively comedy to bring new life to a theme traditionally favoured by historical novelists – that of the wild young Earl, who, falsely accused of murder by the machinations of a conniving cousin and prejudged by his reputation, lives as an outlaw whilst seeking to clear his name.

‘Ravensdale’ is a fast paced, funny and romantic read from the writer of ‘That Scoundrel Émile Dubois’, following the adventures of that character’s equally roguish cousin and set in 1792, just prior to the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars and two years before the story of ‘That Scoundrel Émile Dubois’ .

Book Excerpt

Jumping the ditch, he vanished amongst the shrubs and bushes.
Longface, following more cautiously, nearly twisted his ankle.

Suddenly, Mr Fox sprang behind a bush. Longface leapt behind a lilac tree. The strapping wench who’d floored Filthy Fred came round the side of the house, holding a pair of pistols, and made for a target fixed to one of the shrubs.

She wore a pale lemon dress with matching floppy bonnet contrasting with her dark mane of carelessly piled up waving black hair. Longface supposed that she looked quite pretty. The sight of her had an astounding effect on his companion, who reeled on his feet and ogled like a madman.

She went over to a bench, and began to load the pistols. Longface shuddered. She got into difficulty with loading the wadding in the first, and after struggling for a while, shocking Longface with her language, threw it on the bench and marched about the adjoining rose garden in her rage.

Here Mr Fox showed the full extent of his madness. He stole up to the bench, and using a stone, hammered the wadding securely into place, darting back as the girl turned.

Longface awaited detection. On seeing that the pistol had been loaded, the girl merely raised her eyebrows, smiled, and moved towards the target. Longface, behind a bush nearby, threw himself to the ground, covering his head with his arms. The shot rang out. Looking up, he saw that she had shot through the centre of the target and was smiling happily.

Longface, startled at how charming her smile was, dreaded its affect on the deranged Mr Fox, who quivered and seemed about to have a fit.

The next hour was both dull and nerve racking. The besotted outlaw dodged from bush to shrub, yearning eyes fixed on the hoyden, while she practiced her shooting, singing happily as she loaded the pistol, swearing savagely when she bungled her aim.

Longface dreaded that she must see one of them, but Mr Fox was good at concealing himself. Once he sprang behind a bush at the back of which Longface had already rolled. One of his booted feet came down on Longface’s favourite neck cloth. Longface felt at his last gasp when his tormentor finally moved, tearing it and leaving Longface panting.

At last, a maid came out to speak to the girl. In frozen horror, Longface heard the words, ‘Mr Ravensdale’. Could this be the cousin whom the rumour went had been involved in the then Viscount’s disgrace? Miss Isabella agreed to be led in, the maid fussing about her heavy dark hair tumbling down, one piece having snaked as far as her waist.

On her way into the house, Mr Fox’s goddess dropped a lace edged handkerchief. Of course, as soon as she had gone in, he darted to snatch it up, sniffing it ecstatically and fondling it as if it were the girls’ own flesh.

Then he staggered over to a tree, and beating his head on it, muttered of ‘Outlaw’ ‘Cozened, by Hell and the Devil!’ ‘Brigandage’ and ‘Disgrace’. Longface’s embarrassment at this display was swept away in fear that the Young Hothead might do himself an injury. He also wondered vaguely if he was Disgraced himself. The emotional effect was the same, but as after his father’s ruin his goods amounted to half a donkey and a pound in silver, the practical effects weren’t. Meggie was lucky to have had any solvent man offer for her after it, even if her husband was a misery.

He started forward to stop Fox just as the outcast pulled away from the tree. Then he stole round the side of the house. Here great windows opened on to a long terrace. With bleeding forehead and wild eyes, he hid behind one of the rhododendrons, staring across at the windows, one being that of a drawing room. Longface feared even more for his
sanity, wondering if they would ever leave.

After a while, the Disgraced Earl’s patience was rewarded. Several family members came into the room, including the hoyden, now dressed for dinner in ivory silk, her hair up again. She did look well, and the outcast groaned aloud. Longface’s fears were confirmed with the appearance of an upright, tall, vigorous young man who could almost have been the outlaw’s twin.

A woman’s voice came stridently over the lawn, repeating, ‘Mr Ravensdale’ as if she could never say it often enough. After a time, this other Ravensdale came up to the piano near the window and Miss Isabella sat down to accompany him while he sang in a fine baritone:

‘Where’er you walk, cool glades shall fan the glade;
Trees, where you sit, shall crowd into a shade;
Where’er you tread, the blushing flowers shall rise,
And all things flourish, where you turn your eyes…’

Mr Fox writhed. Longface felt his pain. Miss Isabella laughed with his cousin as they finished the song, and so the outlaw’s torment wore on. Then Edmund Ravensdale came out onto the terrace to take a turn in the air alone.

Now the outlaw’s hand crept to this pistol, and he took aim. The only thing that stopped Longface from throwing himself on him was a strange sense, he knew not from where – that something of the sort had happened before with Reynaud Ravensdale and turned out badly. He stared frozen instead.

Then his chief put his hand on the rumpskuttle’s handkerchief and thrust his pistol back into his belt. His cousin went back in. The robber turned away hunched. On his way back towards his horse, he murmured once:

‘Ye Gods, and is there no relief from Love?…
On me love’s fiercer flames forever prey,
By night he scorches, as he burns by day.’

Longface, dolefully chewing on a piece of grass, muttered, ‘He’s gone fairly off his chump.”

After a few more steps, Mr Fox stopped. So did Longface, but the other, without troubling to turn round, called him.

Sheepishly, Longface approached. He was astounded that his chief had seen him when he had been hiding so skillfully. Still, Mr Fox had sharp eyes, so needed in their trade.

Fox was too distracted even to be angry. He swallowed. “Now you know.”

Longface met his eyes, and turned away. “I’m sorry,” he offered. He had once known the torments of love himself.

On their long, silent ride back to the inn, Longface tried to think of some comforting words to say, but found none. Perhaps, ‘There must be other strapping wenches with gipsyish looks and a liking for fisticuffs and shooting,’ wasn’t tactful. To suggest Kate’s cure might spark off a fit of rage. So, he kept a discreet silence, fingering his torn neck cloth.

As they drew into the inn yard, Longface’s chief spoke. “We’ve got our prize; Jack is to Town. Now is your chance to retire into respectability, Longface, as I’m going for a respectable occupation myself.” To Longface’s amazement, he grinned.

Late that night, when all was still in The Huntsman, Reynaud Ravensdale appeared downstairs, light in hand, looking for something. He searched first in the bar, then in the kitchen. At last his eyes fell on the brown bottle of the pedlar’s cure, also known as The Famed and Marvellous Elixir, which stood next to the teapot. Finding a spoon, he poured himself a generous helping, swallowing it in one gulp. Then he stood, eagerly waiting for the result.

This came speedily. His eyes widened, his face drained of colour, his breathing quickened and he swallowed and looked very ill for the next five minutes. Finally, recovering enough to speak, he swore heartily, poured the bottle down the sink, and trudged back to bed.

TEN YEARS AGO ONE DEVASTATING NIGHT CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR AUSTIN, HUNTER AND ALEX. NOW THEY MUST EACH PLAY THEIR PART IN THE REVENGE AGAINST THE ONE MAN WHO RUINED IT ALL.

Hunter Talbot Grant III, sports figure du jour, wealthy beyond measure and disreputable by choice, has cultivated a reputation that masks the shadows of his past. When the opportunity to ensure financial destruction for Jason Treffen arises, he can't refuse. But first he must shake off the woman sent to tame him!

Zoe Brook, PR agent extraordinaire, never fails to transform a tarnished star. And Hunter's no different. Except there's a catch. Beneath their scorching mutual attraction, Zoe has a secret—she's also been on the wrong side of Jason Treffen, and she has as much of a taste for revenge as Hunter does!

I received this book for free from publisher/pr firm in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Scandalize Me is the second book in the Fifth Avenue trilogy and this one is written by Caitlin Crews who is another new to me author who has written several other romance books.

It was on her site http://www.caitlincrews.com  that I noticed that the UK covers for this series is different from the US ones. The only difference is that on the bottom of the cover there is various scenes from NYC and I am honestly tempted to try and order them online just for that. Is that crazy of me?

I just want to let you know that Scandalize Me isn’t out yet and it won’t be released until June 24th. I was given an ARC of the book for my review today as part of the blog tour for this new series.

In Scandalize Me we meet Hunter. I think Hunter to date is the ultimate bad boy. He comes from a wealthy family but in his own means is wealthy himself. It was always thought that that he would end up running the family business but instead went the way of an NFL career. Hunter has moved back to NYC after being kicked out the NFL and is going through numerous lawsuits. Hunter is alone as he is estranged from his family and has basically pushed all his friends away. To get through life he has numbed himself and would prefer to keep it that way.

I think all this pain he has, has to deal with Sarah and her suicide. Sarah and Hunter use to date until she called it off and like any typical guy he thought the reason why she ended their relationship was because of another guy. This is probably where Sarah was in with  Jason. When Sarah tried to get Hunter to help her he ignored her and since that day this has been a burden on him. We all go through the what ifs right?

Just like in the previous book, a girl enters the scene and her name is Zoe. Her entering the scene is much different then the previous one because she has purposely hunted down Hunter. She lets him think that she is there to change is image but Hunter knows something isn’t right. Hunter is determined to keep things as is and feels that he isn’t worth saving or changing. But you can see gradually he is intrigued by her and wants to know what is really up.

Yes there is more to Zoe then Hunter realizes and what will he do when he finds out? Will Hunter and Zoe team up wot plot their revenge on Jason?

TEN YEARS AGO ONE DEVASTATING NIGHT CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR AUSTIN, HUNTER AND ALEX. NOW THEY MUST EACH PLAY THEIR PART IN THE REVENGE AGAINST THE ONE MAN WHO RUINED IT ALL.

But with an intense sexual attraction that combines a heady mix of exquisite pleasure and sublime pain, will they satiate their thirst for revenge and each other…or lose themselves forever in the darkness?

I received this book for free from publisher/pr firm in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

If you are a every day reader of my blog you know that I don’t read alot of romance books and honestly for me its not a genre I read alot of and that is a personal choice but every once in awhile there is that one romance book that I really want to read and I do.

This is the case today, tomorrow and Wednesday when I will be reviewing all three books in the Fifth Avenue series that is being released by Harlequin in June, July and August.

With this trilogy there is three different authors writing each characters story but they are all connected. How do I feel about that well you will just have to wait till I finish the series. I am actually kind of happy that I am on this tour because I don’t have to wait until August to share my thoughts on that with you.

When I first got asked to be a part of the tour I quickly hopped on board because they all take place in my absolute favorite city…..New York City. After reading Avenge Me I quickly missed NYC and it makes me yearn to go back very soon. Sadly I don’t think May 2015 will come fast enough.

When I went looking to to see if Maisey wrote any other books I noticed that she wrote the prequel Take Me. Take Me tells the story  before the trilogy starts. Its currently available for free in the kindle store. Now do you have to read this before the series probably not but for me its always a must only because I like to know as much as I can from the characters.

So before doing this review I have never read anything by Maisey so its nice to go into a book with a clean slate with no expectations. Well let me say once I started reading her books I was quickly impressed and really enjoyed reading her stories.

This was a pretty quick read and I managed to read it pretty much in one sitting with a span of a few hours.

In Avenge Me (book one) we meet Austin Treffen. He is a very successful business man and lawyer. He comes from a very wealthy family and he has worked hard for his own wealth. Looking at Austin you think he has the world by the neck but on the inside he is struggling with the the past. Ten years ago one of his very best friends committed suicide and he didn’t do all that he should have done at the time. The worst part the person he looked up to and admired is the person responsible.

Ten years ago Austin was a spoiled rich boy who only cared about himself and he was one of the biggest playboys back then. When his friend, Sarah came to him with her problems and needed help be basically didn’t give a damn. It was all about him and no one else which I think is typical with most young people right?

Well fast forward ten years later Austin discovers that his father, Jason, who is also a very successful lawyer and a big advocate for abused women is actually the one behind Sarah’s death. On the outside he is this great man who is doing all that he can for people and these abused women. He was too good to be true in my opinion but then we learn his deep dark secrets. Can you imagine what it could be?

I wanted to put myself in the book and shot the father because I disliked him with a passion. How can someone who claims to be a big advocate for abused women abuse women? When Austin discovers this it makes him sick to his stomach and he has  sworn he will do anything and everything to make sure his father pays for what he has done.

Enter Katy. A very beautiful girl who has an instant attraction with Austin. Katy had the exact opposite up bringing to Austin. So you can see why Katy wants to avenge her sister’s suicide. At first Katy  and Austin have no clue how each one is tied to the other and when they find out, will that change anything or just bring them closer?

I am looking forward to seeing  how this storyline will play out over the next two books.

Has anyone else read this book?

Review/ The Demon NotebookThe Demon Notebook Series: The Demon Notebook #1

by Erika McGann
Format: eARC
Published by Sourcebooks, Inc. on 2014-06-03
Pages: 288
Goodreads
Genres: Horror & Ghost Stories, Young Adult

For Grace and her four best friends, magic is just harmless fun—until it's not...

Things have gone wrong for Grace, Jenny, Rachel, Adie, and Una. Very wrong. A freak snowstorm stranded the whole school, the history teacher's gone bonkers, and their notebook has taken on a diabolical life of its own, bringing all of their previously failed spells to life. At first the girls are thrilled to see their magic finally working.

But the spells are botched and people might get hurt and Una's not acting quite right...

Can the girls stop the madness before the demon notebook works through their list of spells, slowly creeping towards the last, truly awful spell that they didn't really want to happen?

I received this book for free from publisher/pr firm in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Demon Notebook is Erika McGann’s debut novel. It was first released September 2012 and Sourcebooks has aquired the rights for it in the US. This is the first book in the series and the second one is called The Broken Spell..never look back. I don’t know when Sourcebooks plans on releasing this but hopefully soon.

Growing up my grandmother taught me two things: 1) be careful for what you wish for and 2) never to dabble with witch craft because you will be playing with a force that is much stronger then you. I have to say that I never dabbled with witch craft because I have seen way to many movies and they scared the life out of me. I know they are just movies but when you are younger (early tweens/teens) its pretty scary stuff.

When five friends named Grace, Jenny, Adie, Rachel and Una find a spell book called The Great Book of the Occult the girls can’t help but dabble into some spells such as making making Andrew pee is his pants in french class, making a teacher speak gibberish in history class, Grace’s spell for having James like her and want to be with her (I admit when I was in school I thought of doing this but figured it would never work so never even tried it)  and the list goes on and on. These spells never worked and the girls don’t understand why so they decide to up the antie a little and move on the the Ouiji board.

So with a plan to make this work they decide to use the school during career night because thats when the full moon is happening. I think at first the girls thought it wouldn’t work but when it did they got a little freaked out and honestly would could blame them, I know had it been me I would have freaked out and probably ran for dear life.

The board gives the girls a latin phrase which is basically your wish is my commend. The girls have their book of failed spells and before they know it the book is being flipped out and the pages are being flipped like someone is quickly reading it. They don’t really think much of it until the next day in school when all those failed spells start to work, Andrew pees is his pants in french class, there is a bizarre snow storm that forces the kids to spend the night in school, James is chasing down Grace because he likes her and sadly she is not feeling this. The girls notice that the most recent spells are being done and who ever it is is going down the list.

The girls panic because the very first spell is the worst of them all. They need to stop this before it happens. Will the girls be able to before its too late?

Will the girls be able to save one of their own before the demon takes over?

This was a quick read. I enjoyed it but I don’t think Michael would because I think he would find it a little scary. He did say that the cover was neat and wanted to know what I was reading and I asked him if he would be interested in reading it and he politely told me no thank you.

EXCERPT
I can’t get her to look at me, I think she’s ashamed that she has no experience to go with. When I’m finally begging, she looks up and I can’t help it. She looks so lost, so sad. I know that she just needs the courage, but how will she ever find it if she doesn’t know what the reward is like? So I lean over, I place my hand on her cheek, and my lips on hers. She doesn’t freak out, so I use my tongue to entice her. I run it along her lower lip. I feel her breathing pick up and I’m nervous she’ll push me away, but when she doesn’t I try to coax her lips apart so I can really kiss her. When she opens them, her tongue meets mine and I have to keep repeating to myself, “Slow, slow, slow,” or my body might take over and try to push her past her limits. She’s not ready for more than this.

I don’t let myself linger too long. I would love to kiss her all night, but she needs baby steps. I need to give her that or this won’t work. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself, but I should’ve made sure it was okay first.” I say it knowing that she needed the surprise of it or it would’ve never happened.

Her response takes me by surprise, “Don’t. Be. Sorry.” She is breathing hard and can’t form a sentence. I love it. That means she loved it. When she brings her hand up to touch her lips, I know I can make this better for her. I stop her hand with mine and leaving the other on her cheek, I lean back in for a deeper kiss. She responds immediately. I make this one longer, but not much. This time when I pull back, we are both panting for air.

“Wow.” A simple statement from her confirming that she liked it.

Chapter 1

How do you describe the feeling you get the first time you drive down a long, winding road to a place that is all yours? To Andy Friessen, this wasn’t just a house or a piece of land: he had staked a claim in another state, in another part of the county, uprooting his family and selling everything, all for a brand new beginning.
Andy took in the miles of vast hillside and the cleanest pastures he’d ever seen. The green grass swayed in the wind and, for the first time, he sensed the sun, the moon, the stars and the changing of the seasons more deeply than he ever had before. This was a part of the country he had never travelled, but it felt like coming home. He glanced over at his wife, Laura, asleep in the passenger seat, her head resting against the door, her breath whispering softly in and out. He always knew when she was overtired, as she snored in her soft, delicate way. This time, she stirred a bit before settling into a deep sleep, as if her body had finally run out of steam.
She was on edge and had been for some time, but that wasn’t unusual for a mother of newborns. For Andy and Laura, there was twice as much stress with their six-week-old twins, Chelsea and Jeremy, who were sound asleep in the backseat of the truck. Their five-year-old big brother, Gabriel, Laura’s son from a pregnancy at fifteen, sat beside them.
Laura was so young but had lived through more heartache, rejection and struggle than most people would in a lifetime. As a teenager, she had been tossed out onto the street by her judgmental parents, who thought she was a bad influence on her younger brothers. Laura had only mentioned it once to Andy, and only when he pushed. He wanted to know what had happened, to know everything about her family, but he saw the deep hurt like a tread mark on her soul. No matter what he did, he wondered if that was something she’d never be able to make peace with. Andy wouldn’t, not in this lifetime. In fact, George and Sue Parnell were the first people Andy had ever hated without even meeting them.
They had come so far, Laura and him. At first, the only reason he had married her was to save her son when the state took him away. Laura and Gabriel had been living in her car, and Andy had married her because he felt responsible for the entire mess. After all, it had been his mother who fired Laura from her position as a maid in the Friessen house. Andy had treated her horribly at first, but so much had changed since then. He loved her—his child bride, as everyone teased him. She had recently turned twenty-one, legal in every state, and Andy would soon be thirty-three.
Andy pressed the brakes to slow his pickup as the ruts deepened on the driveway. The horse trailer rattled, and he glanced in the side mirror and rolled down his window just as his three-year-old buckskin mare, Ladystar, nickered. Apparently, she’d had enough of this two-day trip, leaving North Lakewood behind and moving two states away to a seventy-two-acre spread Andy had purchased outside of Columbia Falls, Montana.
“Where are we?” Laura said. She didn’t open her eyes as she yawned. Her short bob was a tangled mess, but it was cute. Andy had been irritated when she cut off all her hair, saying it was easier to look after. Maybe so, but he liked her long hair. “Andy?” she said. The leather seat rustled as she sat up.
Andy had to clear his throat. “We should be close.…”
He stepped on the brakes when a sprawling one-story ranch house came into view. It had a light wood finish and a post-and-beam front deck, but something about the place didn’t look right. The railing appeared broken, with pieces of wood scattered here and there. Everything looked unkempt. Piles of debris littered the yard, including a rusted-out pickup with missing wheels parked in waist-high grass that was now weighted down by the melting snow. Maybe he had the wrong place? He eased on the gas pedal and started up the slight incline that circled the house. It was similar to the photos he had seen, but the house in the photos had been newer than this. A couple of the shutters were hanging sideways, and the fence surrounding the house was falling down, as was the corral, but it was the junk, the debris, the plastic, garbage and scattered metal parts, that pissed him off.
“What the hell is this?”
He’d bought the place unseen. The Montana realtor had sent photos of the exterior and interior, and maybe Andy should have asked when they had been taken, but he’d been in a hurry to get Laura and the kids as far away from his family as he could. He parked in front of the house and spotted the red and white realty sign leaning against the front step.
“Andy, this doesn’t look like the pictures the realtor sent,” Laura said. “Are you sure this is the right place?”
One of the babies started fussing, and Ladystar nickered from the trailer.
“Andy, are we here?” Gabriel called out from the backseat, rubbing his eyes.
“Yeah, just stay there, bud,” Andy said as he opened his door. Laura was reaching over to unbuckle Jeremy from his car seat, his tiny hands flailing. “He hungry?”
Laura appeared so tired as she nodded. “I think so. Wet, too.” She patted his bottom and rested him on the seat. “Andy, can you reach the diaper bag on the floor in the back?” She had already unfastened his sleeper as Andy lifted the blue bag, shut the back door and set the bag on his seat.
“Just stay in here until I check things out,” he said.
Laura glanced up with a weary smile. “Okay.”
He shut the door and stepped around the truck, taking in the mess. Ladystar nickered again. “Okay, girl,” he murmured, unlatching the horse trailer and leading his horse out before tying her to the side and bringing out a flake of hay for her. “Better find you some water, too,” he said, pulling out his bucket. Around the side of the house, he found a barn with a missing door, another gated pasture, and a round ring. As he stepped closer, he noticed the round pen appeared intact, with no missing posts and all the rails up. It was probably a safe bet for tonight, at least for Ladystar, until he got a better look around.
He found a water tap at the back of the house and turned it on, but rusty water poured out. “Crap!” he muttered, waiting for it to run clear before he filled the bucket. When he took it back to the trailer where Ladystar was tied and eating, Laura opened the door of the truck and called out, “Andy, Gabriel has to go to the bathroom, and so do I. Can we go inside?”
Andy took in what was supposed to have been a ten-year-old sprawling rancher, with a wraparound deck where they could spend evenings and mornings looking out over their spread. Instead, it resembled the kind of house his cousin Jed would have picked up for a good price to gut and renovate—not something Andy was interested in doing.
“All right,” Andy said. He opened the back door and lifted Gabriel, who was already unbuckled and waiting. “Stay here, Gabriel. Hey, Laura, Chelsea is still sleeping.” Andy lifted his very quiet daughter from the car.
Laura slid down, carrying Jeremy, who was fussing again. She had on just a beige sweater. “Ooh, it’s cold,” she said. She reached in the truck for her tan jacket and pulled it out, holding it out to Andy so he could help her as she juggled the baby.
Laura started up the steps, and Gabriel and Andy followed. At the sound of a vehicle coming down the road, they both turned to see a newer pickup truck flying over the ruts and then pulling in just behind the horse trailer. A woman with a round face, bright smile, and dark hair tied back in a ponytail stepped out, wearing a sheepskin coat and blue jeans.
Laura shrieked behind Andy. He turned just as the screen door Laura had pulled fell over and crashed to the front deck. Chelsea, who had been sleeping, whimpered and then started howling along with her brother.
