Can’t Wait Wednesday

I am not quite sure how well this will work out but I thought I would start to share what I plan on reading in the month.
This is my third month doing this and so far I think I am doing okay but its hard because I am really not good with having a set TBR list because half the time I tend to be a picky reader or I don’t really like the books I have picked out half way through the month.
So what I plan on doing is picking a handful of books each month that I want to read and if I read them then that is good and no pressure if I don’t read them. The ones I don’t read I will put on paper and put in my TBR jar to pick when I am stuck for something to read.
So, for August I am aiming to read the following books:
What do you plan on reading this month?
This is being hosted by two of the sweetest people I have the privilege of knowing in real life, Kate and Kim. Sadly we don’t talk like we use to because you know real life happens but there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of them both.
Good Morning Everyone. I hope you are curled up and reading this morning. What a crazy week its been and sadly it feels like I haven’t really been reading anything over the past week or so but I have been. I guess its just because its in short spurts.
This past week and almost for the past two weeks I have been purging my books. I have managed to rearrange and clean up my bookcases, emptied any totes bags I had filled with books (that was almost 15 bags), cleaned out my cedar chest and started going through the boxes in the basement. I have purged so many books and they have gone to friends and family and anything left has been donated to my local church for their bazaar in October.
Currently still reading these:

They closed the bar and took their last round to the hotel lobby.
Wade had to admit he was a bit more than tipsy, and Trina wasn’t exactly sober. She’d tucked her feet under her on the lobby sofa as she described Venice in a way that made him want to visit.
“There isn’t one car?” he asked.
“No place for them. You only get around on foot or boat. Which is probably best to help counter the pasta you consume while you’re there.”
“So why did you pick Venice?”
Her eyes drifted away, something Wade had noticed happened a lot when she was lost in thought. A hint of sorrow quickly came and went, almost as if she caught herself. The smile she flashed felt forced. “I wanted isolation so I could study.”
“Study?” She rattled off something that went completely over his head.
Her dark brown eyes glistened with her smile. “I’m learning Italian.”
Wade blew out a breath. “Oh, thank God. I thought maybe that last beer was one too many.”
“I like languages.”
“As in many?”
“A few.”
He was happy to speak English. “I’m impressed.”
“Don’t be. Most Europeans are fluent in a minimum of two languages.”
“Are you from Europe?”
“No. Born and raised in Southern California. My grandparents on my mother’s side are from Mexico. Spanish was always spoken in our home.”
“So you speak Spanish as well?” He squirmed in his chair.
“Yup.”
“Now I’m feelin’ a bit inferior.”
“Language is my hidden talent,” she said.
“So how did you end up in Texas?”
Her gaze met his before she wrinkled her nose and gave a quick shake of the head. “It’s a long story.”
“Which is your way of saying don’t pry.”
She stretched out her arms. “It’s my way of saying that we’ve had a pleasant conversation, and bringing up my recent move will change all that. I’d just as soon keep this light.”
Wade wasn’t expecting her reply. “Now you’ve piqued my interest.”
“Another time,” she said.
He offered a smile that usually had women crawling all over him. “Am I going to have that chance?”
“Chance for what?”
“Another conversation.”
Her eyes bored into him as if he wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. “I told you, I’m not interested.”
He lifted one eyebrow, flashed a dimple. “What if I told you I was rich?”
She burst out in laughter.
His smile fell.
“Sorry…” She appeared to pull in her mirth. “You’re gonna have to do better than money.”
“Good lord, woman.”
“Sorry.”
He scratched his head. “I’m famous.”
She bit her lip. “That explains the arrogance.”
Wade placed a hand on his wounded chest. “I am not.”
Trina tossed her head back, and her deep laugh filled the empty lobby. “My name is Wade Thomas, you don’t know who I am?” Her mimicry of him was off by several octaves.
Her laughter tickled his gut.
“I can teach you the two-step.”
She pinched her lips together, trying to contain herself.
His pride was starting to dim.
“I’m not bad looking.”
She looked him up and down … twice. “I’ll give you that.”
He lifted both hands in the air. “Finally.”
For the span of a full minute, she stared. Her smile slowly started to fall, and he knew she was talking herself out of dating him.
“Tell you what. I’m flying home tomorrow. Private charter, because I’m rich, famous, and arrogant.” He moaned on that last word.
“And good-looking.”
Now they were getting somewhere.
“I can give you a lift home.”
Trina blew out a breath. “I’m avoiding going home,” she reminded him.
“And I was thinking I needed a quick stop in Nassau … where the plane might not be able to leave right away. That tropical depressed storm and all.”
She pointed a finger in his direction. “I like the way you think.”
A famous rock star, a family secret and a boy with a great smile make for one unforgettable summer.
It's 1962, and thirteen-year-old Reenie Starr comes alive the minute guests begin to arrive at her family's summer resort. She dreams of the day she can run Sandy Shores, and she spends her time helping out at the resort, swimming, climbing trees, and singing under the stars.
One day, Reenie's mother announces that she thinks the resort could use some entertainment. She invites Gwen, her best friend's almost-grown daughter, to come and teach a dance class. Although Gwen seems sad and remote, Reenie's thrilled to have her there.
As Reenie starts to learn more about the world beyond Sandy Shores, she comes up with a plan that could really put it on the map. She also finds herself caught between the simpler world of her childhood and all of the wonderful new discoveries (boys) and heartaches (boys) that growing up can bring. Reenie thought she wanted Sandy Shores to never change, but after this summer nothing will ever be the same again.
With the same humour and insight that she brought to the acclaimed Words That Start With B, Vikki VanSickle expertly captures those lazy, hazy, crazy days of the last summer before high school. Though set in a different time, Summer Days, Starry Nights is sure to resonate with all young readers on the verge of adolescence.
When I attended YA Fest Montreal a few months ago, I had the opportunity to meet with and speak to Vikki VanSickle. This is how I happened upon my next book.
I was twelve years old the summer I watched the movie “Dirty Dancing” starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. It stirred me in ways I didn’t know a movie could. The music was fun, the dancing was tantalizing, and the romance…oh, the romance…
“Summer Days, Starry Nights” by Vikki VanSickle brings me back to the days when I was twelve and wishing I were sixteen. The days when being a tween just wasn’t enough and growing up wouldn’t come fast enough.
A quick and easy read, this is a great coming of age book for tweens. A book you can easily throw into your bag as you head to the beach or the pool.
Rennie loves staying at her family’s resort. She helps her dad with all the chores and then still has time to spend sneaking away and soaking in the sunshine. She loves the resort as much as she loves her family. However, her mom hasn’t quite been herself and this strain has become noticeable to the other members of the family.
In order to liven up activities at the resort, Gwen, the daughter of an old family friend, arrives to give dance lessons to the guests. Long-legged, blond, and gorgeous, Rennie strives to be like sixteen-year-old Gwen. Who wouldn’t rather be like Gwen instead of Rennie, especially when you’re twelve?
With Gwen’s help over the course of the summer, Rennie plans a huge dance party. This would certainly show everyone that she isn’t a child any longer. However, growing up comes with huge responsibilities and even bigger consequences. With a surprise twist that I did not see coming, Rennie finds out that growing up isn’t all that it’s cut out to be and maybe…just maybe, she shouldn’t be in such a hurry.
If you loved “Dirty Dancing” and looking for a way to connect with the younger generation in your life, hand them a copy of Vikki VanSickle’s book, “Summer Days, Starry Nights.”
