Review: How The Moon Regained her Shape

TITLE: How The Moon Regained Her Shape
AUTHOR: Janet Ruth Heller
PUB DATE: 2007
ISBN:0-9764943-4-5

Thank you to Elaine and Rob for sending me this book to read and review. The book won the Benjamin Franklin Award and the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award. The illustrations in the book are done by Ben Hodson and they are beautiful done in native art.

The book starts with the moon being round and full. She is happy and dances around. Then she dances in front to the sun. The sun tells the moon she is ugly. The moon was sad. She tried to dance again but she kept thinking about what the sun had said. She went along her skypath hanging her head. A comet sees that she is dragging across the sky and goes to visit her. The moon is getting smaller and he finds out why and tells her she should go to see a woman who lives on Earth who will restore the moons health. The moon is almost invisible when she goes to see Round Arms the woman of the Earth. She talks to the moon and makes her feel better when she finds out what the sun has said. She takes the moon around to people who love the moon ie the artist who paints the forest at night, rabbits who feel safe being out at night, and to a hundred women who sing and dance. The moon feels better and goes back to her sky path where is she strong and full again.

A great think about the book was at the end of the book there is all kinds of information about the moon. My son loves learning things and I think this is a great thing to learn about.

Review: The American Journey of Barack Obama

TITLE: The Journey of Barack Obama
AUTHOR: Life Magazine Editors
Pub. Date: October 2008
ISBN-13: 9780316045605

Thank You to Anna from Hachette for sending me this book. I really enjoyed reading it. This is a a beautiful book. The pictures that are in the book are great. There is a mixture of old and new in the book. From baby pictures, to growing up, to the wedding pics and to the family pictures. All of what has made Barack Obama.

It was nice to read and to learn about Barack, his life and family. I learned a few things about him that I didn’t know. I never realized how big of a family he had such as 5 half brothers and two half sisters. That his interest in politics was early on in his life and that he values and treasures his roots and where he comes from.

Barack made history when he was chosen as the 44th President Elected in the US and I think this book is a great addition to have on ones shelf. A piece of history.

Thank You to Valerie for sending me this book for my son. We loved looking through the book. I have to say that this is the first time that my son has wanted to started decorating for Christmas in November. It started shortly after Halloween with wanting to look at the decorations etc. Thanks to all that advertising that was on tv and in the flyers. This book is so beautifully done. Every page is a different pop up scene from around the world. On each page is the story about how they celebrate Christmas. The traditions etc. Words can’t describe the book. You can see alot of workmanship went into the making of this book. It was nice to learn all about Christmas and how its celebrated in other parts of the world.

Review: Confetti Cakes

TITLE: Confetti Cakes
AUTHOR: Elisa Strauss
PUB DATE: Nov 2008
ISBN:0-316-11829-x

Thanks to Anna from Hachette for sending me this cookbook to read and review. This will a treasured book in my house. Having a 5 year old son I am always looking for birthday ideas. Of course looking at this book with him sitting beside me wasn’t a smart move on my part I tell you because he would say I want that cake, no wait I want that one and it went like that with every page I turned. It was fun though.

The book has many recipes for cakes, cookies, cupcakes and icing. Along with the recipes there is so much I learned in the techniques, to the equipment I should have, and to the hot tips she offers on each page.

With the Christmas holidays approaching I plan on making star cookies and ornament cupcakes to give out to family and friends who stop by to visit us this holiday season.

Look for my pictures in the next few weeks to appear here.

Don’t forget the contest for a chance to win 1 copy of the book can be found HERE ends November 19th at 7pm.

ISBN: 978-0-316-11818-7

I have to say Thank You to Anna from Hachette for sending me this book to read and review. I loved reading this cookbook. The pictures and the recipes are all great. The book covers twelve months of simple and elegant party ideas. She offers us the reader with ideas to have our own casual parties.

I am always looking to try new recipes for our family or even when we are entertaining friends. I want it to be simple and not be stuck in the kitchen cooking. This book offers it all.

This book comes just in time for the holiday season. I already have my eye on making wild rice stuffing with our turkey, and perhaps a chocolate spice cake for dessert. My son spotted some decorations he wants us to make. Happy Holidays!

I have already made the Deep Dish Country Quiche that was in the book. I ended up cutting the recipe in half as the original recipe make 2 quiches. It was really good. We all enjoyed it one night for supper when I had nothing else to make.

Review: The Ride Book

TITLE: The Ride
AUTHOR: Jane Kennedy Sutton
PUB DATE: Aug 2008
ISBN:978-159507-193-4

Thank you to Jane for sending me THE RIDE to read and review. I have to say that I really enjoyed reading it. It was fast paced, quick to read and suspenseful. A really page turner in my opinion.

Barbie is the main character in The Ride. She is a 40 something wife and mother. She is married to Ken. There is many references to Barbie and Ken in the book which I thought was quite funny. Barbie is very unhappy in the marriage. Ken is demanding, abusive physically, mentally and emotionally. Lately his moods are disturbing and dark. Barbie is worried as she is always on the receiving end of it. I am sure he has always been abusive in the past. As the reader we witness a few of his actions from throwing a cup of coffee at Barbie and it hitting her above her eyebrow to her falling down the stairs and him kicking her.

They have one daughter named Jessica who is estranged from them. Her father kicked her out when he found she was a lesbian. When Ken found out he went in a rage and blamed Barbie.

One day a lawyer contacts Barbie to inform her that her Aunt Pat is dead and that she must come down to his office. We find out that Barbie was raised by her aunt. She suddenly feels guilty for not visiting with her aunt more as the last time she saw her was a year ago.

During the meeting she finds out that she is the sole beneficiary to the estate. Barbie discovers her aunt was a wealthy lady from her home in LA to the condo in Chicago. Barbie is suddenly a wealthy lady and her life is about to change.

On her way home she becomes over whelmed and stops at a bar for a drink. While she is there she meets an attractive man named Michael. He is a charmer and the naive Barbie falls for it. He listens to Barbie’s problems.

Barbie is falling for Michael cause he says all the right things. Barbie decides she can’t stay with Ken when he almost kills her and makes a plan with Michael to leave Ken. She goes to the bank to withdraw a large sum of money. She trusts Michael to hold onto it. When they agree to meet up he never shows and Barbie realizes that he has taken off with the money. She is furious for being so stupid that she decides to kill herself. She is woken up during the night when Ken wants to test ride his ride he was making in the back yard. She manages to get him to wait till the morning. Thinkign this is the time to leave she attempts to but gets caught and is forced to ride the ride for Ken.

What will happen during this ride? Will Ken actually kill her? Will we ever see Michael again? If you want to know the answers then you have to read the book. Pick it up today.

Please note that Jane is going to do an interview with me. Check my blog it will be up soon. Thanks again Jane!

Review: We Interrupt This Broadcast

TITLE: We Interrupt This Broadcast
AUTHOR: Joe Garner
ISBN:978-1-4022-1319-9
PUB DATE: October 2008

I have to say a big Thank You to Danielle at SourceBooks for sending me this book to read/listen and review for my blog.

This edition features 3 audio CDs with actual broadcasts and includes a new afterword from NBC’s Brian Williams. It is narrated by a veteran journalist, Bill Kurtis.

There is over 2 hours worth of rare original broadcasts. The book is about 46 events that have happened in our history, from the Hindenburg Explosion to Virginia Tech Massacre. Each of the stories made an impact in our lives and history in some way or another.

Anything before President Regan was shot I read in history books so being able to hear the actual broadcasts was really interesting. I loved hearing the old broadcasts and hearing the raw emotion in some of the stories. I have to admit that hearing certain news stories again was rough and I had tears in my eyes. From the death of Princess Diana to the tragedy in the schools to 9-11. I relived all those moments again.

This is a great book and I was really happy to be able to read and review it. A great book to have on ones shelf.
