Alison Dare Adventures In town

Recently we had the pleasure having Alison Dare to our house. We thought that this would be a pretty uneventful visit but we were quickly mistaken. Apparently Alison seems to attract adventure where ever she goes.

On this one particular morning I had left to take Michael to the bus stop. Alison was in the shower. While in the shower she heard the door bell, thinking I had forgotten my key she quickly rushed to the door to discover that it wasn’t be but someone running away.

When She looked around she noticed this red envelope in the mailbox. Alison quickly jumped up to retrieve it.

What could this envelope be? It was addressed to Alison.

We quickly opened the envelope to reveal a treasure map. She was to look for the flat blue diamond that was hidden in my area. She had to retrieve it before the “Odd Lookers” did.

Can Alison do it in time? The Odd Lookers are pretty close.

I have to thank Michael for coming up with this storyline. I figured he was old enough and creative enough to pull this off. What do you think?
Alison is packed and off to her next adventure.

The Double Blog Dare Tour

Welcome and hello! I am truly honored to be part of the The Double Blog Dare Tour with Tundra Books. This is might be your first stop if your a reader of mine or not so hop on over to check out these other blogs who are part of the tour today:

Rachelle from Living Between Wednesdays
Open Book Toronto
Helen from Helen’s Book Blog

When I got these books in the mail I did a little research and discovered that Alison Dare, Little Miss Adventure and Alison Dare, The Heart of the Maiden by J Torres and J Bone were actually published in 2002 and Tundra Books was re-releasing these two.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Alison Dare: Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft in fabulous, graphic adventures.Alison Dare is not your typical twelve-year-old. She’s the daughter of an archaeologist/adventurer and the masked hero known as the Blue Scarab. To top it off, she’s also the niece of an international super-spy; it’s no surprise that a craving for danger is in her blood! Unfortunately, her parents have locked her away at the prestigious St. Joan’s Academy for Girls, hoping that this would lead to a more “normal” life for their daughter.

But despite all the strict rules at the school, Alison and her best pals – Wendy and Dot – somehow manage to find themselves involved in adventures that rival those of Alison’s globetrotting, planet-saving relatives. Whether it’s magic genies, super-powered bank robbers, or a dastardly baron bent on world domination, Alison Dare delivers the best thrills since Indiana Jones and more action than Lara Croft!

He has also written for children’s magazines, books, and television.

J. BONE is an Eisner Award-nominated illustrator of several critically acclaimed comic books and graphic novels, including Spiderman: Tangled Web, Batman / The Spirit, and Paul Dini’s Mutant, Texas.

I have to send out a huge thank you to Sylvia from Tundra Books for contacting me about this tour and sending me the books to review.

MY THOUGHTS
Being graphic novels they were both a quick read as both books were under 100 pages and we were able to read them both in a day.

After reading them Michael turned and said “mommy she is like Indiana Jones but instead of being a man she is a girl.”

I think seeing that Alison is 12 years old, Michael could relate to her (he is 7). There is some mystery and tons of adventures in both books. Although as much as he liked Alison he did say that it would be cool to have a dad who is a masked hero.

It was really nice to read these graphic novels because for once the boy isn’t the super hero and it gives the girl who read this the chance to know that they two can be super heroes and that girls are just as smart as boys.

Thanks again Sylvia for allowing us to be a part of the tour and for reviewing these great graphic novels. They will be enjoyed over and over again I am sure.

I always thought that Tundra Books was awesome but now I know they are truly awesome. Since they are re-releasing both Alison Dare graphic novels they are running this super sweet contest and you can check out more about it on their site Tundra Books Contest to see what it entails.

Check back later today when I will post something special with Alison Dare.

On This Day Last Week (Thursday)

On Thursday I decided to go back to BEA because there was a few author signings I wanted to go to and to do more walking around since the day before I tended to focus on the author signings and nothing else.

Here are three of the author signings I was excited to get to do:
Clinton Kelly. I love watching What Not To Wear so it was super nice to meet him. He is a super sweet guy.

Melissa Anderson. When I heard she was going to be there I had to make sure to get in line to get a book signed. I recently found out that she is living in Montreal now.

Mick Foley. I use to work with a guy who was a super wrestling fan and he would always talk about it when we worked together. So I had to go and meet the guy I heard so much about. It was funny because Avis and I were standing in line for another author and Mick and his publicist were leaving and I pointed him out to Avis and his publicist ran over with a book because she saw me point him out.

Thursday was also the Book Blogger Convention Reception. I decided a few weeks before BEA that I wanted to go and it was there that I got to meet several book bloggers. Check back later this week when I highlight the book bloggers that I met.

I have to say apart from meeting those authors today the highlight of the day was finally getting to sit down and have dinner with Kathy. I have been holding on to the pictures of Kathy until now. We met at the Zen Palate. After dinner we (Avis. Linda, Kathy and myself) decided to go to Time Square for a hot chocolate at Starbucks.

Before we got anywhere I had to get some pictures.
As I went to get a picture with kathy we had to snap this because she said she knew I was short but I guess she wanted to prove how short I am LOL
This is Kathy and I with Time’s Square behind us.

While in Time’s Square we bumped into Pam. For some reason I have no idea why I didn’t think to get a picture with Pam, sorry about that Pam but I did get this one of Pam with the grumpy cop as we so nicknamed him.

I guess us book bloggers looked pretty scary to him.
Then my final picture of the evening was with the US Marine Corp. I have no idea who these guys are but they were super sweet to pose for a picture and it was nice to talk to them briefly and to express my heartful appreciation for what they are doing.
Shortly after that I think we walked around and visited the Toys R Us and then made our way back to our hotels.
Check back tomorrow to see my post about my last day in NYC.

On This Day Last Week (Wednesday) PT 2

This is the second part of On This Day Last Week. After spending the whole day at BEA I had plans with Donna and Linda to go and see Mary Poppins.

Mary Poppins is taking place at the New Amsterdam Theatre which is located at 214 West 42 Street which just happens to be in the heart of Times Square.

This is a clip I found on Youtube. It was absolutely a beautiful show. No words can describe my opinion of it.

The inside of this theatre is absolutely beautiful as you can see in the picture. I didn’t take any pictures because the few I took didn’t turn out so this is one I found online.

After Mary Poppins we decided to take a walk around Time’s Square. There is so much to see and do in Time’s Square. Bright lights comes to mind. There was alot of people in the area.

Donna suggested a stop into the M&M store and for a chocolate lover I was in heaven. So many kinds of M&Ms to look at.
This is how the M&Ms were placed. This is one of many sections of M&Ms.

These were on display there.

This is the front of the store. It took me forever to grab this shot as the screen kept changing. I was really good in the store and didn’t come out with a ton of chocolate. I thought it was a little expensive at $12.99/lb US. I couldn’t leave the store without buying some special M&Ms.

I think this is called NYC Finest and NYC Bravest. I could be mistaken and I thought after the fact that I should have taken a picture of the tubes but oh well. If anyone happens to know for sure what these are called I would really appreciate it.

We also made a quick trip across the street to the Hersey store. Soon as you walked in you could smell the chocolate. It was so good. But I was good and only bought a chocolate bar.

I have to say that I think the M&M store was my favorite. After walking Donna to her hotel we walked back to ours and settled in for the night with some M&M candies.

Check back tomorrow for my last day at BEA.

Life After Yes Review

TITLE: Life After Yes
AUTHOR: Aidan Donnelley Rowley
PUB DATE: June 2010
PUBLISHER: Avon imprint of Harper Collins
PAGES: 340
SOURCE: I am part of the TLC Book Tour.

ABOUT THE BOOK
This is the story of Quinn—born Prudence Quinn O’Malley—a confused young Manhattan attorney who loses her father on that tragic September morning that changed everything. Now, at an existential crossroads in her life, Quinn must confront impossible questions about commitment and career, love and loss. Her idealistic beau desperately wants a wedding, and whisks her away to Paris just to propose. But then Quinn has a dream featuring judges and handcuffs and Nietzsche and Britney . . . and far too many grooms. Suddenly, her future isn’t so clear. Quinn’s world has become a minefield of men—some living, some gone, and traversing it safely is going to take a lot more than numerous glasses of pinot grigio.

Life After Yes is a blisteringly honest, thoroughly modern tale of life and love in chaos, marking the arrival of a truly exciting new voice in contemporary fiction.

MY THOUGHTS
Thanks to Trish at TLC Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of the tour for this book.

I absolutely love the cover of Life After Yes. The white dress with the red ribbon is really pretty.

Anyways. I was super excited to read this book because it takes place in NYC and what better book to read on the way to NYC last week. The only thing that I was unsure of was the 9/11. I am an emotional person and that whole day still is heart breaking to me. I still get very emotional when I hear stories or see video of that very day. I personally wasn’t effected by it but it was the day that changed the world and the way we see it. I have to say that Aiden incorporated it into the story very well. It was there but not in your face there. Quinn the main character was the one who always had it in the back of her mind because she lost her father that day. This one day affects how she reacts and interacts with people.

Life After Yes is the story of Quinn. She is a young attorney and lives in NYC. Quinn’s life is a perfect dream (to us) because she is dating Sage, who is like a Prince Charming. Who wouldn’t love to be whisked away to Paris on a unplanned trip? In Paris he proposes and Quinn accepts. Back in NYC Quinn begins to question her feelings for Sage and wonders if marrying him is the right thing to do.

This is Aiden’s debut novel and I really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to reading her future books.

On This Day Last Week (Wednesday) PT 1

Wednesday was the day that the Exhibit floor officially opened to the public. I was super excited because I was taking part in the Children’s Book & Author Breakfast.

The Master of Ceremonies was Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. She briefly made a few jokes about what was happening to her outside of BEA, getting to BEA (she encountered a few people in her way) and using some of the titles of her newest books Helping Hands series- Don’t talk to strangers etc about her situation.

She introduced Cory Doctorow, Mitali Perkins and Richard Peck. The each spoke briefly about their books.

I am sure Cory had a few people in tears during his speech because he got emotional talking about his book. Mitali’s talk was beautiful. She spoke about her book Bamboo People and that books can either be a mirror (in which you can see yourself/situation in) or a window (in another world, time or place other then now). Richard had the whole crowd laughing. He was a fantastic speaker.
These are the books I picked up at the breakfast:
-Emily’s First Day of School by Sarah Ferguson
-Bamboo People by Mitali Perkins
-Three Quarters Dead by Richard Peck
-For The Win by Cory Doctorow (not pictured)

During the Children’s Book & Author Breakfast I sat with Kathy-Bermudaonion, Julie-Booking Mama, Alea-Pop Culture Junkie, Gail-Ticket To Anywhere and Shanya-Chick Loves Lit.

After the breakfast I said a quick hi to Natasha-Maw Books and Amy-My Friend Amy before I quickly ran off, I wanted to get to the Sourcebooks booth because I really wanted to get a copy of The Days of Our Lives book signed.

I knew Ken Corday was going to be there and only found out the night before that Kristian Alfonso was going to be there signing too. She was super sweet and so friendly. It was so nice to get to talk to her briefly about the Hope storyline.

The next signing I had to quickly get to was the Rick Springfield one. This was one super long line but it went really quickly.

Rick was super nice. He gave one of the best hugs. We got to briefly speak about his upcoming tour and his stop in Montreal. I am anxiously awaiting for his book to come out this fall.

After I got my cd promo signed (its full of his hit songs) I looked around for a bit but didn’t want to go to far because I was going to be meeting up with Paul from Sourcebooks and some bloggers.

I briefly got to speak with Paul in the morning and was really looking forward to going back to the booth to hear about the fall books. I have to say there is alot of great YA books coming out this fall.

A pleasant surprise was seeing Helen Ellis the author of The Turning there. She is so friendly and sweet. Dying to read her book now.

In the booth listening was several bloggers: Kathy, Julie (here is a picture of Julie and I) Avis, Donna, Linda and Pam-Bookalicio.us.

(This is where I wish I had taken more pictures. Oh well there is always next year.)

After Sourcebooks I decided that I wanted to look around before doing any more author signings.

On my journey around the booths I remembered that Ethan Zohn (He was on Survivor Africa, the third season and was the winner.) was signing his book Soccer World Africa. I unfortunately missed out on the book as he had no copies left when I got there. I did get the chance to speak with him about me being a Survivor fan, etc and I graciously asked if I could get a picture with him and promised that I would return the next day to get his other book signed Soccer World Mexico. (Which I did do.)

Check back later on today when I do a OTDLW post about my night in NYC.

Poor Girl Gourmet Review

TITLE: Poor Girl Gourmet
AUTHOR: Amy McCoy
PUB DATE: June 1, 2010
PUBLISHER: Andrews McMeel
PAGES: 222

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Love eating well but hate paying a lot? Amy McCoy’s cookbook, Poor Girl Gourmet (based on her popular blog of the same name), features decadent and delectable recipes for foodies with limited budgets, but sophisticated tastes.

In Poor Girl Gourmet, McCoy breaks down the costs for each dish while also offering money-saving strategies, including tips for growing and preserving your own food, as well as ideas for quick and delicious family meals. Each recipe serves at least four people, so it’s perfect for families on a budget—because eating well while saving money is something that appeals to all of us. McCoy, knowing that a gourmet meal is enhanced by the proper wine, also reviews more than 25 affordable wine varietals and blends, with pairing suggestions for many of the dishes. And there is a chapter of splurges ($15 to $30 per entrée for a family of four) for when you’re feeling fancy.

MY THOUGHTS
Thank you to Tammi at Andrews McMeel for sending me this great cookbook to read and review. She knows how much I love cookbooks and always sends them unexpectedly to me. I love the element of surprise when I get packages from her.

As everyone knows I love cookbooks, love trying new foods and eating healthy and cheaply is possible. Growing up I have to admit my parents weren’t adventurous in there cooking and we always had the same thing every week on the same day (ie hamburgers and hotdogs on Saturday etc). I use to always question my mother because she always had a ton of cookbooks sitting on the shelf in our home why she never tried any of the recipes in them and her answers was always “What if we don’t like it and then we end up wasting food?” Well for me you never will know until you try it.

So moving out was a joyous event for me and to celebrate I had bought myself a cookbook and swore I would always try new foods and not stick to the same old thing.

Back to my review :)I loved this cookbook because as a parent I want to serve and eat healthy foods without spending alot of money but not scrimp on the taste of it.

In the book Amy talks about some key points you can do to save money. Here is a few of them:

  • Cook at home. (We all know sometimes its easier to make a quick run through the drive thru on the way home but just think of the money you could save?)
  • Don’t waste food and buy only what you need. (You can freeze left overs, stale bread can become croutons or breadcrumbs, left over vegetables can become a stock and compost.)
  • Plan your meals, shop the sales and use coupons.
  • Buy in season and locally
  • Buy in bulk. (Great for meat. I do this and I am amazed at how much I end up saving in the end)

Amy also includes a basic technique section on how to toast nuts, make crouton, breadcrumbs, kneading dough and a few other things that are handy to know.

There is roughly 84 recipes in the book and here is what I loved about that, there is a photo with every single recipe (BONUS for me) and with each recipe she has also broken down the cost of the items so it shows you what you end up saving on each meal.

The recipe sections are: Soups & Salads, Entrees, Vegetable & Sides, Bakery & Desserts, Splurges, Wines and Menu Suggestions. Know who doesn’t like a menu suggestion?

Since getting the cookbook I have made a veal stew, Perfect Roasted Chicken with Spicy Orange Sauce and Roasted Chicken Legs with Olives. Happy to say we enjoyed all three of these recipes and looking forward to trying more recipes from this cookbook.
