Simon stood by the edge of
woods, his gaze directed toward Hartsdale Castle. He couldn’t see the house—he
was too far away for that—but he didn’t need to. He could hear every word
spoken in the grand ballroom, could hear the thoughts of every guest present.
Silk rustled, slippers scuffed as Lady Hartsdale’s guests swayed and dipped
while the orchestra performed, each melody played more enthusiastically than
the one before.

Now and
again, champagne glasses clinked as toasts were made. Servants passed silver
trays filled with delicious culinary enticements. There was laughter, gaiety.

And in the
midst of it all was Madeline. Simon inhaled slowly, savoring her scent even
across the distance that separated them. He closed his eyes, narrowing his
focus like a spyglass in his mind. Every extraneous sound, every sensation
faded away till he was left with only Madeline.

There it
was, the sound of her breathing, of her heart beating rhythmically against her
ribs, of her blood pulsing through her veins.

Her
blood.
It called to
him, a siren’s song meant only for him. If he spoke to her—no more than a
whisper in her mind—would she heed his summons?

No. He wanted her to come to him of her
own accord. He would not manipulate her, no matter the temptation, damn it.

Just what
was it that made him desire her so?  He
wasn’t certain. And yet he felt somehow…protective of her, which was
ironic, given the circumstances. After all, he could end her life in an
instant, if he chose to.

But he
wouldn’t. He had no wish to. Last night was an anomaly for him. Yes, he’d lured
her to the woods. Once he’d sensed her presence, realized she was out walking
the grounds past midnight alone, entirely vulnerable, he’d played tricks on her
feeble mortal mind, confusing her, drawing her toward his lair.

But
then…he’d laid eyes on her, and at once everything changed. He could not
explain it—didn’t want to, really—but as they sat there together before the
fire, he’d felt almost human for the first time in more than a century. He was
no longer a predator in search of prey, but a man bent on courtship.

He’d seen
the images in her mind, felt the brunt of the humiliation she’d experienced at
her husband’s hands, and he’d felt murderous. Not toward the lovely woman
sitting before him, completely unafraid in his presence, but toward the man who
had made her feel such shame, such sadness.

No, there
was no explanation for it. And yet he knew that he would do everything in his
power to have her—to possess her, body and soul; to protect her from threats
far greater than him.

If only she
would let him.

With a sigh,
he leaned back against the rough bark of an enormous old oak, settling in to
wait.

She would
come—he was sure of it.

Do not read this book.
No, seriously, I have absolutely no idea why one was even written about my life. This is ridiculous. Not only did I live in the middle of nowhere in a drug infested town, under the roof of a trailer that was literally collapsing on itself… but nothing, and I mean, nothing interesting has ever happened to me.
Well, unless you counted being abandoned outside of a motel, picked up by my new foster father that was always too high to remember my name, or spending the last six years traveling the United States practically homeless. Oh! Let’s not forget to include the jerk that I really needed to break up with because let’s face it… he had actually started to scare me. A lot.
I’d spent the last six years of my life feeling horribly out of place. Feeling like I was not only in a time that didn’t fit me but in a place that was so lackluster that I had issues believing it was real. So when I tell you not to read this book? I mean it.
There is nothing of interest in here. I promise.
Well, I suppose there was one memorable and interesting moment in my recent past… the night of my eighteenth birthday. You know, the one where my four hot neighbors, and known criminals, kidnapped me onto a river boat. You could say I was confused when I found myself falling asleep floating down a Missouri river… and waking up to marmalade skies and a talking river otter with a hot pink top hat. None of that confusion though compared to when my four psycho kidnappers made me remember everything I’d forgotten.
Because I had been right, I didn’t fucking belong here.
I belonged in the Kingdom of Snark.
This book is anything but sensible. Time for Sensibility is a standalone reverse harem romance that is fast-burn with violence, swearing, a band of hot psychos, a wonderland inspired world, and a haunted slightly naive MFC. Abuse is mentioned. +18 audience.
Exclusive Excerpt!

I wasn’t positive what it was about these men, but they made me feel
grounded. More myself, a stronger version of myself. I didn’t think nor could
have predicted that my new grounded nature would include an acceptance of
homicide…but in this situation it seemed like the most sensible shit that I’d
heard all year. Or maybe I was just goddamn insane, and that felt more real
than not to me.
When Preston had first told me, I’d been freaked out.
I’d been caught up on the concept of them killing someone in
general, not specifically Wade. Then I realized I was only upset because I felt
like I ‘should’ be upset and since I wasn’t, I’d felt guilty.
Now though? Well, what was done was done… and frankly, I had
always been aware of what they were capable of. I’d heard the rumors about how
dangerous they were. Plus, the motherfucker had left bruises on me. That wasn’t
fucking okay.
Movement pulled me from my thoughts, my head snapping over
to Ranger and Lorenzo as they exited the trailer.
The sky above us was thundering, but no rain fell on the
guys, their smiles really fucking big for having just murdered someone. It was
sort of hot.
I was starting to understand why I had never been attracted
to anyone else before them. I was very clearly into serial killers. I should
have known, considering how much I loved watching documentaries about that
shit.
Ranger was covered in blood as he stripped off his shirt,
the man preferring to be shirtless far more than clothed, I had gathered, and
dropped it on the pavement before running his bloody hands through his hair,
tinting it with crimson. Lorenzo, on the other hand, had just rolled his sleeve
up, hiding the singular stain of blood. Damn, they were so different from each
other.
I had the urge to know what it would be like between them. I
felt like the way they fucked would be so dangerously different, and I craved
that. I just craved them. Alright, I possibly had a problem.

Review/ Wherever She Goes

When it's your word against everyone else's--what do you do?

Bree Finch has fallen on some troubled times: her marriage has ended, she's separated from her young daughter, Charlotte, and she's haunted by a past she can't escape. Routine helps, and every afternoon, during her lunch break, Bree goes for a jog in the park near her office. It's the same every day: the same route, the same mothers with their children, the same people walking their dogs.

One day, during her jog, she spots a young boy a bit older than Charlotte, a boy she saw just the day before with his mother. But his mother is nowhere to be seen now. Nervous, Bree watches the boy as he wanders into the parking lot. And then she watches as a man grabs the boy, forcing him into an SVU. She watches as the boy cries and screams for his mother. She watches as the man slams the door shut, revs the engine and takes off.

She runs after them into traffic, and tries to take a photo, but can't. The SVU is gone.

Bree can't deny what she's seen, and she can't get the little boy or his screams out of her head. But, she's the only one who believes that she witnessed the kidnapping of a child. No one else at the park saw the boy or someone snatching him, and she can't give a detailed description of the child. The police don't believe her, nor does her estranged husband, with whom she has a tense and complicated relationship. Instead, they begin asking Bree the questions: Why is she always alone in the park? Why does she spend so much time there? Does she realize that she makes the other mothers nervous, with the way she watches them and their children?

Then, days later, a woman is murdered--and Bree is the first person the police talk to.

Not because they think she may have witnessed something.

Not because they believe her about the kidnapped boy.

Because she's their main suspect.

I am a huge fan of Kelley Armstrong and she is pretty much an automatic buy for me as I tend to devour her books fairly quickly. Although with that being said for some reason I never read this. I had to double-triple check just to be sure and in fact, it was correct, I never read this. Since it was Canada Day I decided now was the perfect time to read it because Kelley is a Canadian author.

Wherever She Goes is a stand-alone book.

Our main character is Aubrey. Aubrey is separated from her husband, Paul. They have a daughter together and he has primary custody. This really intrigued me because as you read you realize that Aubrey has so many secrets that no one knows about. As the story progresses more is revealed about her past and the reasons she did what she did.

One day Aubrey is in the park and she witnesses a little boy being forced into a car. Like any normal person who witnesses this, she instantly calls the police. The only problem is no one has called to report a missing child. Aubrey knows this little boy as they met briefly the week before with his mother. Where is his mother and why hasn’t she reported him missing?

With no reports of a missing boy, the police don’t believe her (after questioning the other parents that were in the park as they saw nothing) and feel as though she is doing this for attention. Aubrey knows who the boy is and knows he was taken but decides maybe she should focus on her own daughter but her gut keeps telling her otherwise.

When an unidentified woman appears on the news as being murdered Aubrey recognizes her. She once again goes to the police but no one is taking her seriously so she decides to take matters into her own hands because she knows there is a little boy who needs her help. She is willing to risk her own past coming to light to help this little boy out.

As she continues to investigate she soon realizes her life is in danger. How far will Aubrey take it? Is she willing to risk it all for a little boy she doesn’t really know?

I highly recommend this super quick and exciting read that will have you on the edge of your seat. So many twists and turns that will make you want to keep flipping the pages to discover more.

Playing off "The Wheels on the Bus," this dazzling nursery rhyme book covers all the ways drag queens "work it," by one of the drag queens from the nationally acclaimed Drag Queen Story Hour.

The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish encourages readers to boldly be exactly who they are. Written by a founding member of the nationally recognized Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH), this fabulous picture book offers a quirky twist on a classic nursery rhyme. The story plays off "The Wheels on the Bus" as it follows a drag queen who performs her routine in front of an awe-struck audience. A fun, freewheeling celebration of how to be your most dazzling self, this book will appeal to young and old readers alike.

These are the times when I wish I had a little one in the house because I would have loved to read this to them over and over again.

The illustrations are gorgeous. Bright and colorful. The costumes they were were stunning. It really brings the book to life in my opinion.

I loved how it wasn’t just characters in the book but everyone had a name and they are all lovely names such as Cinderfella, Stinkerbell, Ritabook, and a few others. As the story goes along more and more of the characters are introduced and join in the celebrations.

I love that it wasn’t just one kind of drag queen but many in a range of skin tones, sizes etc. We need to show our kids there is more to the world because its not just straight forward.

I do have to say that after reading it you will be singing  The Hips on the Drag Queen and dancing all day. Which in this current time its not a bad thing,

I highly recommend this book. I know its geared towards the age group 4 to 8 but I think anyone would love this.

Review/ Code Name Verity

Review/ Code Name VerityCode Name Verity on May 7th 2013
Pages: 332
Goodreads

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery.

Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in "Verity's" own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

In the month of June I took part in a group buddy read for Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein with a bunch of fellow bookish Canadians.

It was during a Penguin 10 Reveal where Penguin was discussing Elizabeth Wein’s upcoming release, The Enigma Game that a bunch of us chimed in saying we should buddy read Code Name Verity and we did.

I wanted to love the book but I just couldn’t. At times I wanted to give up but thankfully the group kept me going. I think had it not been for them I would have stopped.

I see the praise for this book and I feel like I might be in the minority with my thoughts on this. Did I miss something? Perhaps reading a set number of chapters weekly set me back? Should I attempt to read it perhaps in one sitting? Do I do the audio book version instead?

I should start off by saying that historical fiction is a new to me genre. I have never had an interest in reading this genre before so I was happy with the buddy read so that I could give it a try.

I will say that this will be one of the hardest reviews I have had to write. Hopefully I don’t include spoilers.

The book is told almost in like a diary style and I tend to love this format. Its told in first and third person and I think that is where I got a little lost because I wasn’t sure if it was Verity (who had numerous names such as Queenie)) and Kittyzhawk (Maddie). I ended up having to make notes just to get through the first part. I think it was almost half way through it when it started to make some sense.

This is the story of two young women in the 1943 in Nazi occupied France. One of the young women just happens to be a secret agent who is captured as she was parachuting into France. She is given two weeks to give them radio codes, locations etc but she gives them her story mixed in with that and as she is doing this she is being tortured. As you are reading this your heart breaks because this happened to so many people (men and women). I did like this character because even though she was living in hell she was feisty and very snarky. I guess she figured what more could they do to her then they already were. Will they kill her or send her to a concentration camp?

The second part is about the pilot and what happened after her friend parachuted into France. We discover that she had to crash the plane in France and about the people who helped her. This was when the story started to get a little more interesting because it seemed to fill in gaps  of the previous part and it begins to make a little more sense.

I do admit to googling to see what the planes looked like that were mentioned.

Sadly this was not the book for me but I think if you like historical fiction you might enjoy this if you haven’t already read it.
