 GRAB THE OKAY WITCH NOW!

Firstly thanks to Rockstar Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this tour and thank you to the publisher for giving me an eGalley of the book to read and review for my tour stop today.

This is the second graphic novel in what I believe is a duology. The first one is called The Okay Witch. Prior to my review, I didn’t read the first one but I really want to after reading this. Thankfully the author gave a brief synopsis of the previous book at the beginning to catch up on what has happened. I was able to enjoy it just the same but I think you might want to read the first one to get the whole storyline and feel of the characters.

This was a light and funny read. I am sure kids would get a blast out of reading these.

I know I will definitely be picking up this to add to my collection and all future books by Emma.

Mountain of Flame excerpt from Chapter Two
Anna glanced at one of the young ladies whose eyes followed Zac’s every move through the water. The girl caught Anna’s gaze and twitched her eyebrows up in challenge.

Game on, she seemed to say. Anna’s heart panged. There was no game. No court drama. She was here to experience new things, nothing more, and she’d loved every minute so far. Earlier that week, she’d skimmed across the swelling waves, leaning out over the rushing water, hanging onto Zac’s tiny sailboat tipped nearly on its side. Zac had whooped his approval with dolphins jumping and squeaking next to her. She’d savored the cool water and bright sun. Later the rhythmic surf had lulled her to sleep on the warm sand. Cool nights were filled with bonfires and sipping sweet drinks Zac mixed up with juice and some kind of bubbly wine he claimed was a Puledor specialty. He must think Sunderland was so boring.

Zac trotted up the slope behind her. She’d worn a shirt over her swimwear most of the time, but now her scars were in full view. When their eyes met, he flushed. “Has someone hurt you?” he whispered.

“It was a long time ago.”

He didn’t know her story. Anna’s father wanted it kept quiet. If Zac’s father knew, he’d not be keen on a match with a former slave girl. One saved by a man she’d left to pick up the pieces of his kingdom, while she was here, without a care in the world, experiencing beauty and
adventure.

You left him. You left him. You left him.

“I’m sorry.” Zac’s brow furrowed. He was trying his best to be the perfect host. She shouldn’t be rude.

“I don’t even think about it anymore.” Anna smiled, and he relaxed. My other scars aren’t so visible.

“Let’s go.” He took her hand and tugged her the rest of the way up the hill at a jog.

Anna peeked at Zac. She had to admit, he was exhilarating. It was easy to let him drive darker thoughts from her mind. His pace quickened as they raced to the cliff’s edge and plunged off together. She screamed all the way down. The rush of danger made her feel alive. Zac was right. It was just what she needed.

This is the complete DEEP STATE DOWN series
bundle
, which includes two intense post-apocalyptic survival
thrillers
:

–  HARD WAY HOME (Book 1)

–  DARK ROAD BACK (Book 2)

Set in a dystopian U.S. that has been thrown into a deadly new dark ageNew York Times bestselling author Christa Wick (writing as Dana Fraser) brings readers a gripping 210,000-word high-octane saga with a compelling cast of strong, imperfect characters, each fighting to find and protect their loved ones against unthinkable odds.

BOOK ONE: HARD WAY HOME

Two strangers. Almost no chance of survival. Even less hope. When a massive cyber breach hits every U.S. hydroelectric station just as the Gulf Coast refineries are decimated by a volatile storm, the attack knocks out the nation’s entire power supply, instantly throwing America into a deadly new dark age.

For Army veteran Cash Bishop, getting back to his family before it’s too late becomes a fight to survive in a race against time. His only ally? A brilliant energy scientist who may be the only person still alive with more things to be afraid of than the impending apocalypse.

Dr. Hannah Carter doesn’t know who’s after her or when she became a target. But getting captured is not an option. Seems the stranger she meets on her dangerous cross-country trek is the only person she can trust now to help get her home. And keep her alive.

With chaos escalating and the country on the brink of collapse, Cash and Hannah need to figure out who executed the attacks on the U.S. power grid, and why these people are so willing to kill him to get to her.

BOOK TWO: DARK ROAD BACK

In this gripping sequel to the post-apocalypse action thriller HARD WAY HOME, the answers behind an onslaught of not-so-natural disasters only lead to more questions as a global depopulation conspiracy threatens Americans from right in their own back yard.

Retired Army Colonel Thomas Sand returns to the U.S. during its darkest days, only to find the leaders left in government—puppeted by the deep state elite—want him dead. Between the threat assessment algorithm he developed before the apocalypse, and the fact that his wife Becca and stepdaughter Hannah are both brilliant scientists critical to the new world order, his family isn’t short on enemies. And despite all his training to the contrary, his only duty now is to them and their safety. Unbeknownst to him, halfway down the coast, his wife is fighting to drag her fevered and battered body home with no means of communication, and only the help of a nameless stranger…

Meanwhile, Dr. Hannah Carter, still traveling with the Army veteran who saved her life, discovers she may be the linchpin to
destroying the dangerous shadow government that now controls what remains of the fast-crumbling U.S. But to do so, she must leave behind everyone she cares about and face off against the hidden puppet master pulling the strings from his bunker. Unbeknownst to her, Cash Bishop, her fearless companion turned ruthless protector, has followed her into the lion’s den, no violence spared. His only light in their new broken world of neverending darkness, finding Hannah is a given. As is taking down the corrupt powers that destroyed his country once and for all…

Chapter 4: Good Riddance

All total, Thomas spent fifteen minutes in the house after shooting Gavin once center mass, then again in the head. He quickly ransacked the man’s clothing and desk, taking the wallet and a key ring that had fobs for both vehicles. From there, he sprinted to
the master bedroom, removing Agnetha’s diamonds from the corpse and dumping the rest of her jewelry box into a pillow case before heading to the oversized utility closet at the back of the garage where Gavin kept his golf clubs and, more importantly, most of his hunting equipment.

Entering the garage, he hit the remote start for the Land Rover. Nothing happened. He hit it again, then a few more times trying different combinations of pressing the button. Next he tried the Z4. With the only sound in the garage that of Thomas swearing, he
stalked over to the Land Rover, threw the driver side door open and tried starting the vehicle in the more conventional manner.

He lost ten seconds to pounding out his fury against the steering wheel then popped the hood, got out and lifted it the rest of the way open. He stared, mind numb at the jumble of slashed wires and hoses, the inner protective covering of the Land Rover’s engine missing. Spotting a note taped to the inside of the hood, he pulled it off and read, his flesh heating in rage.

Whoever you are, you weren’t meant to survive.

Your Host,

Gavin DeBerg

Even though he knew he would find the same cruel sarcasm beneath the hood of the Z4, Thomas had to check. Each step, each wasted second pounded in his chest, but he opened the driver side door, popped the hood and surveyed the carnage.

Yep, DeBerg really was a cold-hearted bastard. If the world wasn’t ending around him, Thomas would have returned to the basement and unloaded the Maxim’s remaining twenty-seven bullets into the corpse’s groin and face.

Hell, he’d grab an extra magazine and turn the body into Swiss cheese.

But the world was ending, so he kept a tight grip on his focus and turned to the utility closet. He twisted the doorknob, found it locked. He tried both keys on the ring he had taken from Gavin’s desk drawer. When that failed, he lifted his leg, took a quarter second to brace then kicked as hard as he could, his anger doubling the force of the blow he landed.

Hollow and made out of plywood, the door peeled away from its frame to expose two backpacks and a Browning bolt-action rifle in camo finish kitted out with a custom stock and a Leupold VX-6 rifle scope with a 6:1 zoom ratio.

He tested the weight of the two packs then opened the heavier one, finding two extra magazines and several boxes of ammunition, as well as all the other contents he would expect Gavin to carry on a hunting trip or in a bug out bag.

Conscious that someone could
show up and challenge him at any second, Thomas stood with everything but his
gaze immobilized as he tried to figure out how to get the extra gear back to
the Caddy. Then he remembered the separate garage, the one with the au pair
suite above it.

He hadn’t asked Gavin about the girl, hadn’t even thought that she could be alive and walk in on him.

Get your head out of your ass, soldier!

With a curt nod acknowledging his own stupidity, he headed to the breezeway that joined the main house to the small wing. A glance in the garage revealed no third car, but there was a riding lawn mower. A jog up the stairs offered a self-contained suite filled
with furniture, but an empty refrigerator and cupboards. He ran back down, hit the garage door opener then returned to the main garage, grabbed the two packs and the rifle and dragged them to the lawn mower.

Spotting a fifteen-gallon gas caddy, he almost pissed himself with joy.

With the mower’s key in the cup holder, he spent his last two-point-five minutes in Gavin’s house getting everything strapped onto the machine using the garden hose he found hanging in a coil on the garage wall. He took the same route from house to woods, barely
slowing once he was past the tree line to retrieve his pack.

He stopped when he got close to the trail, turned the mower off and made a scouting trip to check the area around the Caddy. When he was satisfied no one was watching, he brought the mower up alongside the Cadillac, started the old beast and popped the trunk. He put the fuel container in first. He had already tested the seal on the nozzle and fill hole in the garage, but he tested them again then grabbed the lighter of the two packs from the storage closet.

He figured the bag was meant for Agnetha to carry and dumped the contents in the trunk for a quick survey.

The neutral line of his mouth turned to a frown as a couple dozen diapers fell out. Then he laughed, thinking about the NASA astronaut who had worn adult diapers for a marathon cross country drive with the intent to slay a sexual rival. If they had been adult sized, he might have entertained the idea because every stop he made on the trip home would heighten his exposure. Still, the
diapers might come in handy if he injured himself. And the baby formula and jar food was worth keeping as long as he could.

Looking at the contents, Thomas could understand the thought process that had spurred Agnetha’s revolt. She had put on her most alluring dress and favorite jewels before poisoning herself. The woman had preferred to die looking like a million bucks instead of living with makeup running down her face and dirt under her nails, with no au pair to hand Gisa off to. Thomas could count on one hand how many times he’d seen the woman hold her daughter over that four-day weekend.

Leaving the contents of the bag scattered, he tossed in the garden hose then slammed the lid. The heavier pack he placed on the passenger floorboard of the front seat, taking a few seconds to dig inside and remove the shortwave radio. He placed the radio in
the center of the seat then climbed behind the wheel and carefully drove backwards for a quarter mile until he was off the bike trail.

The best route to his home in Evansville, Indiana, was also the most direct. He passed unmolested through Manassas then headed southwest to Interstate 81. He followed it south to the I-64 exchange then headed west into the George Washington and Jefferson
National Forest.

Surrounded by the quiet beauty of the woods and hills, he could almost relax. Between the full tank he had started with and the gas caddy, he figured he would make it at least as far as Huntington, West Virginia. Before that, he would keep an eye out for both
the conventional and unconventional opportunities to get more gas. He had cash to pay, and some of the commercial operations would have tanks of fuel with generators running. Timber companies and farms would have hand pumps if they didn’t have generators, and he would pass plenty of both getting to Evansville.

The farmers would be reluctant to give him any gas because it was specially dyed to mark it for agricultural use only. They would tell him to wait, tell him that the pumps in town would be working within a few hours, either because the power would be back on or the generators would be up and working. They would be wrong, but Thomas would do nothing to warn them. Instead, he would pull out a piece of Agnetha’s gold jewelry from his pocket.

Greed would spark in the farmer’s gaze and the gas would flow into the Caddy’s tank. For a day or two, the farmer would shake his head in memory, maybe chuckle to his wife about the foolish traveler who had traded a thousand dollars worth of gold or a three-strand diamond bracelet for less than a hundred in gas.

Then reality would set in and the farmer and his wife would weep.

Review: Social Misconduct

Review: Social MisconductSocial Misconduct by S.J. Maher
Published by Simon Schuster on April 23, 2019
Pages: 336
Goodreads

A timely and shocking thriller about a young woman who is the target of a social-media smear campaign.
“Smart, sardonic, sexy, suspenseful—and scary, because it’s probably true.” —Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Jack Reacher series
Her perfect job becomes the perfect nightmare when a stalker hacks her phone.
Candace Walker is thrilled when she lands a new job at a hip Manhattan tech company and gets a brand-new iPhone. She’s more than ready to move on from creating clickbait ads for weight-loss pills and herbal erection boosters, and is determined to dazzle the startup team she joins.
A week later, though, everything is at risk: Candace is the target of a mysterious harasser and an online smear campaign. She tosses her new phone into the Hudson River, begins hiding out in her sister’s storage locker in New Jersey, and can’t think of a single person she can trust. But Candace hasn’t come this far—and gone to such lengths—to submit to what is happening without a fight.

Have you ever read a book and as you were reading it you were thinking what the heck am I reading? Well, that was me with Social Misconduct by Canadian author S.J. Maher (aka Stephen Maher). This is his third stand-alone book. When I say what the heck am I reading, I don’t mean that in a bad way but in a sitting on the edge of your seat kind of way.

I bought this when it came out in 2019 and sadly it’s been sitting on my shelf until earlier this week when I was looking for a quick thriller kind of read. This was definitely a quick read that I pretty much devoured in an afternoon. Once I started I could not put it down. I was hooked right from the get-go.

I do have to say before I begin my review that this is very realistic and made me really question what I post, share, save on my phone and my passwords. I think we take technology for granted and not realize what our actions can do. Seriously anyone can hack into everything and what you put out there is out there forever.

Our main character is Candace and she just landed a promotion within the company she works for. One of the perks of the new job is getting a new phone. Roughly a week later Candace starts to receive weird messages and soon realizes her phone has been hacked. The person behind it is harassing her. This person has posted something that can never be taken back because just as quickly as it’s posted it’s been reshared. Who is behind all this and what do they want with Candace?

The storyline is told in the present day and the past. It’s not confusing at all and you definitely need that for this storyline. I will admit as I was reading it I was beginning to believe the people she was thinking were doing it was behind it all. Just when one person is named you could put the pieces together only to realize it’s not them. This was a roller coaster ride with my brain. I had no idea if I was coming or going with it.

This is where I will stop because I will give it all away. So I will wrap up this review by saying I never saw that ending coming and I am still sitting here thinking how did I know see that coming.

Review: New York in Bloom

Review: New York in BloomNew York in Bloom by Georgianna Lane
Published by Harry N. Abrams on March 12, 2019
Pages: 160
Goodreads

Discover the floral heart of New York City in this companion to the popular
Paris in Bloom
by acclaimed photographer Georgianna Lane.
New York in Bloom leads you on a beautiful floral tour of the metropolis—past stylish floral studios and corner shops overflowing with fresh-cut blooms, through bustling flower markets, to blooming trees and lush public parks. With sumptuous photography, the unexpected, softer side of New York is revealed by juxtaposing floral beauty with exquisite botanical details found in the city’s iconic architecture. Also included are field guides to locating and identifying common spring blooms, a list of recommended locations and vendors, and a tutorial on how to create your own New York–style floral bouquet. For anyone who loves New York City, flowers, and photography, New York in Bloom is a gorgeous gift and an essential addition to one’s library of fine books.

I have had New York in Bloom on my wishlist since I first heard about it and never picked it. As much as I love anything New York I thought it was just a little bit pricey for me considering it’s more of a coffee table book. So, when I found it on sale at an amazing price I couldn’t resist and finally bought it.

I have looked through this book numerous times. The photos are absolutely beautiful.

Georgianna Lane is an amazing and talented photographer and you can see that in each and every one of her photographs. She writes and photographs each book she has done. Along with this one, she also has done Paris in Bloom, and London in Bloom are just two in her collection.

New York in Bloom showcases the parks and gardens in NYC and Georgianna takes us on a tour of them (and I loved that she included the location of them because I definitely need to check them out the next time I go to NYC) and I could never imagine anything so beautiful. She also takes us to the floral markets. I definitely was in the wrong parks of NYC because I never saw buckets of fresh cut flowers outside any markets so that is another thing I want to hunt for when I go.

I also love that she included directions on how to make your own NYC-style bouquet. I definitely want to try and make my own. Hopefully once covid restrictions ease up and when I feel comfortable I will visit a florist to see if I can get the flowers I need to make

The cover is gorgeous and I could look at it all day. Flipping through this book has definitely made me miss NYC. Hopefully, I will get back there one day soon.

I definitely have her other books on my wishlist and hopefully, I will pick those up when I see them on sale. This is a must for anyone who loves flowers and NYC.

Blog Tour & Review: Kyle’s Little Sister

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the KYLE’S LITTLE SISTER by BonHyung Jeong Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out

About the Book:

Title: KYLE’S LITTLE SISTER

My name is Grace, not “Kyle’s little sister!”

Having a good-looking, friendly, outgoing older brother sucks—especially when you’re the total opposite, someone who likes staying home and playing video games. Your parents like him better (even if they deny it!), and everyone calls you “Kyle’s little sister” while looking disappointed that you’re not more like him. I was really hoping I’d get to go to a different middle school, but no such luck. At least I have my friends…until he finds a way to ruin that, too…! Argh! What do I have to do to get out of his shadow?!

Thanks to RockStar Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this tour. Also thank you to Yen Publishing for sending me an egalley of Kyle’s Little Sister to read and review for my tour stop today.

I first have to start off by saying that this is a must-pick-up and read for anyone who likes graphic novels or if you’re looking to give a book about friendships, siblings, and how to deal with someone only wanting to be your friend because of a sibling. I am sure we all have been in that situation where someone befriends you only to end up using you for their own personal gain.

This was a super quick read with great illustrations. They suited the storyline perfectly.

Our main character is Grace and she basically lives in the shadow of her older brother. In Grace’s eyes, her brother Kyle can do no wrong. He is the favorite child. Kyle is a popular kid and involved in sports.

Grace is starting 6th grade and is going to her brother’s school who is in the 8th grade. Grace has two best friends Amy and Jay. Amy is the bossy friend who thinks she is doing the right thing and never realizes that not everyone is ready to step out of their comfort zone. We see that with her interactions with Jay. Jay has this crush on Kyle and she is not ready for him to know about it but Amy has other plans. She wants Jay to tell him. This soon becomes a problem with Amy pushes too hard and the girls have a falling out.

That was something that I could totally relate to, although my case was a let a friend push me outside my comfort zone. To this very day, I wish I could go back in time and redo it all over again. Trust me I would do it all differently.

Anyways back to the review. Since the following out Grace has been hanging out by herself until a group of popular girls take her under the wing. This thrills Grace but she soon realizes that they aren’t all they say to be especially when it comes to Cam, who is the leader of the group. They make her feel welcome and are quick to dump her when she won’t do what she is asked. This is very relatable to kids everywhere. What will Grace do when she realizes the truth?

This is BonHyung Jeong’s debut graphic novel and I am excited to read her future works.
