Publication date: September 25th 2021
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Holiday, Romance

Twas the text before Christmas…

Twenty-eight-year-old Holly Snow is the only mother her four-year-old niece remembers. Three years earlier, when her sister and brother-in-law were killed, Holly’s dream of becoming an international flight attendant was put on hold so she could be home for baby Faith. Holly is doing everything she can to keep the rent paid, including working as an online travel agent, filing medical claims, and cleaning apartments in her building. When her friend Maggie tells her that her boss needs someone to buy his Christmas gifts, she leaps at the opportunity.

Tall, dark and Scroogy, investment banker, Archibald Harrington is too busy to do his own Christmas shopping. When his assistant tells him she knows of a professional shopper, he happily checks another dreaded task off his holiday list. The last thing Archie is expecting is for his hired elf to text him insistently to find out more about the people on list. The last thing Holly expects is to develop feelings for grumpy man who’s stealing her Christmas spirit.

Will there be a Holiday miracle, or will Holly and Archie miss their chance at love? Find out in the fifth installment of the Accidentally in Love Series.

EXCERPT:

“My boss needs a personal shopper for Christmas, and I’ve already told him I know the very best one in Manhattan.” Toni gives me an open-mouthed smile, clearly expecting me to jump up and down.

“Your boss. As in Archibald Snooty Pants the Forty-Second?” I ask, pursing my lips.

She opens her mouth, but I cut her off with one finger in the air. “You complain about the man all the time.”

“It’s not like he’s a horrible person, he’s just a one trick pony—all work and no play. Plus, it’s not like you’ll have to work side-by-side with him or anything. You probably won’t even have to see him.”

“I’m not a personal shopper,” I tell her. “Unless his family and friends want ramen noodles or discount t-shirts from the guy who sells them out of his trunk in front of my apartment building, I would have no idea what to buy.”

“Yeah, well, Archie doesn’t know that.” She pumps her eyebrows up and down like a comedian.

“Toni, you told me the guy was a rich stuck-up preppy from the Hamptons. While I would love nothing more than to make some extra money, I don’t have the foggiest notion how to shop for rich people.”

“So watch some holiday episodes of Real Housewives and see what they buy each other. He’ll tell you how much to spend on each person. Come on, Holl, it’s not brain surgery. It’s shopping. You know how to shop. And you need the money.”

“What if he hates me?” I despise feeling so pathetic, but I’m totally out of my league here.

“Then he hates you. So what? Believe me when I tell you, Archibald Harrington only thinks about work. You can’t take anything he says personally.”

Dread slams into me like a wrecking ball. “How much do you think I can make?”

“Enough to pay for Christmas and at least the next three months of Faith’s preschool tuition. How can you pass that up?”

The answer is, I can’t. And if it means working for a cranky billionaire, then Toni is right. I’ll do whatever I have to do in order to take care of Faith. I just can’t guarantee I’ll like it.

“Fine,” I tell her. “How many gifts am I supposed to buy?”

“He’ll need all of his family gifts, which include his godfather’s family. He’s spending Christmas with them in Newport. He wants you to cover his business gifts, as well. The VIPs are starred, meaning those particular gifts need to be extra-amazing. I’ve also made you a list of everything that I want, so I don’t wind up with another Monte Blanc pen. I’ve already sold three of those suckers on eBay and I only get a fraction of what they’re worth.”

“I don’t even know what a Monte Blanc pen is.” My chest tightens like I’m not getting enough oxygen.

She hands me a piece of paper. “This is a list of websites to check out. You can order everything and have it delivered here.”

“Why can’t I just have everything sent to his office? What am I going to do with it?”

After taking a healthy swig of white zinfandel, Toni says, “You’re going to wrap everything up and make it look like Santa himself cracked the whip on the gift-wrapping elves. Once you have everything purchased and ready, I’ll send a car to pick the gifts up.”

“You’ll send a car, will you?” I tease.

“Yeah, well, I can do those fancy things in the name of my boss.”

“How am I going to pay for everything?” I ask. “I have about two hundred dollars of credit left on my card. I don’t think that’s going to cut it.”

Toni opens her purse and hands me a shiny black credit card. “There’s no limit, so if you don’t mind doing a little jail time, you could have a lot of fun.”

“No limit? I can’t imagine such a thing.” I fantasize about what damage I could do with plastic like this. Not only could I pay for Faith’s school for the rest of the year, but I could also get my mom into one of those nursing homes that has a hair salon and restaurant. I could upgrade to a two-bedroom apartment so Faith doesn’t have to sleep in the closet anymore, and I could even splurge and buy myself some real leather gloves.

“You’re imagining, aren’t you?” Toni jolts me out of my daydream.

“I most certainly am. The first thing I’d do is buy Faith whatever winter coat she wanted and then I’d take her out to a nice restaurant.”

Toni rolls her eyes. “If you’re going down for a crime, you’ve got to think bigger.”

I stare at the card for a second, then look back up at Toni. “How can you stand working for someone who has so much? Don’t you just want to steal cash out of his wallet once in a while?” I don’t really have the heart of a felon, I’m just tired of always being broke.

“The nice thing about Archie is that even though he has the personality of a killer shark, he’s generous. He has a Friday lunch catered for his staff every week, and he makes sure to float us enough extras that none of us are tempted to steal from him. He’s a good businessman.”

“Even though he’s a stuck-up preppy?” I ask for clarification.

“Exactly.”

I look at the list of stores she thinks I should shop at—Tiffany’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, The House of Bijan … “What’s my budget?”

She hands me another piece of paper. The handwriting isn’t hers, so I’m guessing it’s Archie’s. “He wants me to spend four thousand dollars on his mother?!”

“Yup. He wants her to have two gifts. One of them needs to be the main. The other can be fancy ass chocolates or something.”

“Right, but probably not gas station chocolates.”

“Quit stressing, Holls, you’ve got this.”

I don’t know why, but for the life of me I can’t see this ending well…

Melanie Summers also writes steamy romance as MJ Summers.

Melanie made a name for herself with her debut novel, Break in Two, a contemporary romance that cracked the Top 10 Paid on Amazon in both the UK and Canada, and the top 50 Paid in the USA. Her highly acclaimed Full Hearts Series was picked up by both Piatkus Entice (a division of Hachette UK) and HarperCollins Canada. Her first three books have been translated into Czech and Slovak by EuroMedia. Since 2013, she has written and published three novellas, and eight novels (of which seven have been published). She has sold over a quarter of a million books around the globe.

In her previous life (i.e. before having children), Melanie got her Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta, then went on to work in the soul-sucking customer service industry for a large cellular network provider that shall remain nameless (unless you write her personally – then she’ll dish). On her days off, she took courses and studied to become a Chartered Mediator. That designation landed her a job at the R.C.M.P. as the Alternative Dispute Resolution Coordinator for ‘K’ Division. Having had enough of mediating arguments between gun-toting police officers, she decided it was much safer to have children so she could continue her study of conflict in a weapon-free environment (and one which doesn’t require makeup and/or nylons).

Melanie resides in Edmonton with her husband, three young children, and their adorable but neurotic one-eyed dog. When she’s not writing novels, Melanie loves reading (obviously), snuggling up on the couch with her family for movie night (which would not be complete without lots of popcorn and milkshakes), and long walks in the woods near her house. She also spends a lot more time thinking about doing yoga than actually doing yoga, which is why most of her photos are taken ‘from above’. She also loves shutting down restaurants with her girlfriends. Well, not literally shutting them down, like calling the health inspector or something–more like just staying until they turn the lights off.

She is represented by Suzanne Brandreth of The Cooke Agency International.

What if a school club changed your life forever?

In the second week of seventh grade, Jason Sloan signs up for the brand-new HAIR Club. He and his friends have no idea what it’s about, but since they’re the first to sign up they figure they’ll be in charge in no time. The club turns out to be super weird: using fancy new equipment donated by a mysterious benefactor, the members are supposed to monitor school security footage. Their first assignment: find out what is stealing the cafeteria’s croutons.

Instead of the expected dark cafeteria, the computers show the club members something else entirely: actual footage of themselves as high school seniors, five years in the future! What on earth could be happening? Is it some kind of time warp, or alternate reality? Or is it just an un-funny prank? As they scramble to solve the mystery, they can’t help but notice something else—none of them like what they see five years from now. Is there any way to change the future—and their fates?

Before I begin my review I just quickly want to thank Rockstar Book Tours for letting me take part in this book tour and to Margaret K. McElderry Books/ Simon & Schuster Children’s for sending me an eGalley of the book so that I could read and review it.

Would you join a school club that you knew nothing about?   That’s exactly what Jason and Glamourous Steve do on the first day of grade 7. I should say Galmoursous Steve convinces Jason to sign up for H.A.I.R club. They have no idea what kind of club it is but Steve looks at the bigger picture of it being a club and they can control it. Jason knows that if Steve’s name is there other kid’s names will be too.

To Jason’s amazement, ten kids signed up and that includes Jason and Steve along with Nikhil, Harriet, Andrew, Sonia, Laura, Vincent, and two other kids (who end up leaving when they thought this club wasn’t actually about hair). They are all 7th graders.

H.A.I.R is a brand new club to the school that no one really knows anything about, even the club advisor Ms. Grossman has no idea what it’s about. It’s only when she reads the backstory that you find out what it is. It appears that an anonymous successful entrepreneur has offered the services of his company to install a state-of-the-art security system to the school, with one stipulation and that stipulation is that the members are to take charge of the security system.

You are probably saying the same thing as me and that is what kind of security company would put students in charge of it? And should the students have access to all that information? Why is the principle even allowing kids to be behind this? The group is tasked with basically keeping on eye on everyone and report security issues.

This is pretty much where I instantly became hooked and needed to find out more about this and perhaps more about what the club and this security system are about.

The club is hit with their first case and must discover who has been stealing the cafateria’s croutons stash. When they go and check past security footage they soon discover something weird and a little creepy. Its reather unbelievable when they spot themselves in various spots in the cafateria. They soon realize they look different. They begin to think that the footage is meshing in with other footage. But soon realize that thats not the case they are viewing footage from 5 years in the future! How is that possible? The group soon discovers that they aren’t liking what they see and decide to try and change so that the future will change for them.

Finding this hard to believe they decide to scoop at the school at midnight and so discover that there is indeed someone stealing the croutons and its not what they expected. Can the group figure out what is really happening with what they saw?

This was definitely a fun read. I pretty much breezed through this in an afternoon. I think kids would get a kick out of this. Its  funny with a little mystery and adventure to it.

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents ten new stories–including one of his own–about beloved heroes that sprang from the imaginations of some of the best middle grade authors working today.

A cave monster . . . an abandoned demon . . . a ghost who wants to erase history . . . a killer commandant . . . These are just some of the challenges confronting the young heroes in this highly entertaining anthology.

All but one of the heroes previously starred in a popular book from Rick Riordan Presents. You”ll be reunited with Aru Shah, Zane Obispo, Min the fox spirit, Sal and Gabi, Tristan Strong, Nizhoni Begay, Paola Santiago, Sikander Aziz, and Riley Oh. Who is the new hero? Read Rick Riordan”s short story to find out!

Ten bestselling and award-winning middle grade authors contributed to this collection: Roshani Chokshi, J.C. Cervantes, Yoon Ha Lee, Carlos Hernandez,
Kwame Mbalia, Rebecca Roanhorse, Tehlor Kay Mejia, Sarwat Chadda, Graci Kim, and Rick Riordan, who also served as the editor.

The cultures represented by these own-voices stories are: Indian, Mesoamerican, Korean, Cuban, Black American, African, Navajo, Mexican, Mesopotamian, and Celtic.

There’s something for everyone in this collection of fast-paced and funny adventure stories that show what it takes to be a hero in any time, setting, and universe.

Before I begin my review I just quickly want to thank Rockstar Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this tour and for providing an egalley of the book to read for my tour stop today.

I realized when I was reading The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities that I don’t read enough anthologies. Not sure if it’s because I don’t gravitate towards them or I don’t hear enough about them. Hopefully moving forward I will start to read more of them because I do enjoy reading them and they are the kind of book you can pick up numerous times and not worry about what you previously read. Which I have to admit is quite often my case of not remembering what I read the night before.

I feel ashamed to admit that I have never read a Rick Riordan or a Rick Riordon Presents book before so all these characters were new to me. I think the main reason I never read them is because of the mythology. I guess in my head I thought of other things but after reading this I have to say it intrigued me. Which is a good thing.

That is something else I need to work on moving forward as I seem as though I am the last person on earth to read any of his books. What should I start with first?

I am one hundred percent sure that if you read any of Rick Riordon or his presents line of books that you will absolutely love this.

The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities is a collection of short stories which feature the characters from Aru Shah, Zane Obispo, Min, Sal and Gabi, Gum Baby, Nizhoni Begay, Paola Santiago, Sikander Aziz, and Riley Oh. If you counted only nine you would be correct because the tenth story features a brand new character from Rick Riordon.

The authors behind each short story are Roshani Chokshi, J.C. Cervantes, Yoon Ha Lee, Carlos Hernandez, Kwame Mbalia, Rebecca Roanhorse, Tehlor Kay Mejia, Sarwat Chadda, Graci Kim, and Rick Riordan.

This book was filled with action, mystery, and adventure. Just the kind of books that I like to read.

For having not read the Presents line I definitely enjoyed reading this and it actually piqued my interest to want to read the books. Had I read the books I am sure I would have enjoyed this way more. I know I definitely want to read the Present line moving forward because if this is any indication of what the books are about then I want in. Perhaps that will be my goal for 2022.

I can’t pick a favorite because each story had something I loved about it but I think once I read the books I might be able to come back and say if I have a true favorite or favorites. I definitely plan on picking this up once again when I read the books in the Presents line.

Reviews:

“Shoot Down the Stars was an emotionally raw story about finding yourself and allowing yourself to be loved the way you deserve. The level of realness was heartbreaking, the characters went through so many struggles, yet by the end, I was left with a smile on my
face. —Charity B. Author of Skeleton King

“I never knew I was capable of love, hate, distress and gut wrenching sadness at the same time until I read this book. Proceed with caution.”—Beth H.

“I literally loved and hated every character at some point in the book. The emotional impact is just amazing.”—Author R.N Gosser

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

I shrug toward David and brush my dark red hair over my shoulder, holding it back with my hand. I lean down to inhale another line of powder into my sinuses so it can light the fire within my brain. To clear the drugs from my nostril, I sit up, sniff, and wipe my nose. White residue clings to my thumb and forefinger.

David and I sit across from each other. The case rests between us like a Ouija board, but the only phantoms we are invoking are our own. I push it out of the way and scoot toward him. My legs are made of lead. I’m heavy and somehow weightless at the same time. I’m floating, but my body descends through whatever it touches.

I sit next to him, sinking into the wall and through the bed. He puts his hand over mine, and our fingers intertwine. I lean my head on his shoulder. He sighs and turns his face until our lips are nearly touching. There’s a thread that draws me closer to him, but it’s always severed just before anything happens. I slip back down to reality.

“This feels good, Emily.”

“I know, doesn’t it?”

I smile up at him and sit back to enjoy the utter blankness within my mind. It is blanketed, dark, and perfect. Despite the darkness, there’s a tiny flicker of light—a sensibility to know that numbing myself is not a good coping mechanism. But even so, what’s the worst that can happen?

About Lauren Biel:

Lauren Biel is an up-and-coming author who loves to write angsty emotion romances, Traumances if you will. When she’s not working, she’s writing. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her husband, her friends, or her pets. You might also find
her on a horseback trail ride or sitting beside a waterfall in Upstate New York. She has a pretty normal life, yet her stories are anything but normal.

Lauren’s stories are often emotionally raw, with lots of twists and turns. She describes her writing as “where light meets dark”, which represents how her witty humor compliments the darkness in every story. Instead of trying to mold her writing to fit in a
box, she chooses to be unapologetically herself. Genre is no constraint for her, ranging from new age, to post-apocalyptic, and even paranormal. And everything in between! The common theme in every book is finding love when you least expect it. She enjoys putting her characters through tribulations, allowing their triumphs to be that much more poignant. Make sure you have your seatbelts secured. It’s always a bumpy ride.

A lyrical novel-in-verse that takes us through the journey of coming of age in New York during the 80s.

Alma's life is a series of halfways: She's half-Chinese, half-Jewish; her parents spend half the time fighting, and the other half silent; and she's halfway through becoming a woman. But as long as she can listen to her Walkman, hang out with her friends on the stoops of the Village, and ride her bike around the streets of New York, it feels like everything will be all right. Then comes the year when everything changes, and her life is overtaken by constant endings: friends move away, romances bloom and wither, her parents divorce and--just like that--her life as she knew it is over. In this world of confusing beginnings, middles, and endings, is Alma ready to press play on the soundtrack of her life?

I quickly have to thank Make Me A World for providing an eGalley of Alma Presses Play for me to read and review today.

I definitely want to check this out when it comes out to see how the actual book is written. I read an advance copy digitally so I know the finished copy won’t be like this. I will definitely be picking up a finished copy when it comes out because I plan on annotating it.

Alma Presses Play is told in unpunctuated poems, some begin with a song lyric, some begin with a word and its definition and some are in the form of a letter or lists.  I don’t read a lot of books written in verse and when I do I really enjoy reading them.  This wasn’t a fast read for me because I was reading it off my computer and eye strain was real for me. I don’t regret that at all. It was worth it.

Our main character is Alma (13 years old) and she is a half-Chinese, half-Jewish girl growing up in New York City in the ’80s. There was so much 80s reference that it definitely brought me back to my youth with her walkman and the music she was listening to. Every time she mentioned a song I admit I went to youtube to hear it again. Brought back so many fun memories for me. Yes, I even had a walkman with cassettes.

Alma is your typical 13/14-year-old girl trying to navigate life as best as she can while dealing with family problems with her parents possibly divorcing, friends, and puberty.

The one thing I did notice and not sure if girls are like that today but Alma was obsessed with her period and telling everyone and practically anyone. I know when I was her age I never told anyone and none of my friends really talked about it. I do know one thing girls back then actually were obsessed with and gushed about was their first kiss. I still remember mine and the funny fact is I am still friends with him today.

I would definitely read more of Tina Cane’s book in the future.

In this middle-grade graphic novel, Nisrin will have to rely on faith, friends, and family to help her recover after she is the target of a hate crime

Nisrin is a 13-year-old Bangladeshi-American girl living in Milwaukie, Oregon, in 2002. As she nears the end of eighth grade, she gives a presentation for World Culture Day about Bangladesh while wearing a traditional cultural dress. On her way home, she is the victim of a hate crime when a man violently attacks her for wearing a headscarf.

Deeply traumatized by the experience, Nisrin spends the summer depressed and isolated. Other than weekly therapy, Nisrin doesn’t leave the house until fall arrives and it’s time for her to start freshman year at a new school. The night before class starts, Nisrin makes a decision. She tells her family she’s going to start wearing hijab, much to their dismay. Her mother and grandparent’s shocked and angry reactions confuse her—but they only strengthen her resolve.

This choice puts Nisrin on a path to not only discover more about Islam, but also her family’s complicated relationship with the religion, and the reasons they left Bangladesh in the first place. On top of everything else, she’s struggling to fit in at school—her hijab makes her a target for students and faculty alike. But with the help from old friends and new, Nisrin is starting to figure out what really makes her happy. Piece by Piece is an original graphic novel about growing up and choosing your own path, even if it leads you to a different place than you expected.

I quickly have to thank Abrams Books for providing a free egalley of Piece by Piece The Story of Nisrin’s Hijab by Priya Huq and SLJ Teen Live because otherwise, I would not have known about this middle-grade graphic novel. I picked this up recently when I attended virtually the SLJ Teen Live event.

The egally was in black and white but I definitely want to see this one in color. From the sample page, it looks like it will be a bright and vibrate graphic novel.

This is an OWN’s voice graphic novel.

I definitely have to add that there is a few trigger warnings to this such as assault, trama. mental health etc

Our main character Nisrin is attacked one-day leaving middle school for wearing a hijab. In the beginning, she was wearing to show what it looks like. She never thought she would wear it daily.

She takes the summer to recover from her attack. This is when she decides she wants to wear it all the time to her family’s dismay. They all tell her no but she stands up for herself and wears it anyway. Nisrin quickly realizes that everyone hates it. They quickly judge her for it, but Nisrin persists in wearing it. Its thanks to her cousins and her researching on Islam that she feels closer to God.

It was definitely a bit heartbreaking in the beginning when Nisrin was attacked. You can’t help but want to applaud Nisrin for standing up for what she believes as everyone should.
