(Book Spotlight) West of Wawa

I am super excited to be a part of this WOW book tour for West of Wawa. I love reading books that take place in Canada and from authors who are Canadian.  I love discovering books that I might not normally read and this was no exception. All I will say is that I really enjoyed this and my review will be coming shortly.

About the book:
Emotionally battered and bruised, 29-year-old Australian immigrant Benny is looking for escape, not redemption. Escape from herself and the dismal failures of her life: her first solo art exhibition is panned by critics and her husband left her for an Andy Warhol look-alike. Isolated from her family, her career as an abstract artist in ruins, she comes to Canada and finds solace working eighteen hours a day as a graphic designer in a disreputable agency. Numbing her pain with hard work, she self-medicates with prescription meds, and becomes involved in a series of increasingly dubious relationships with ill-suited unreliable men who lead her into danger. Cutting off all ties with normalized daily routines, Benny leaves her job and sets off on a road trip adventure across Canada, hoping she will discover who she wants to be and where she wants to be it.

During the bus trip she discovers junk food, cigarettes, hash and drinks a lot of alcohol. She confuses sexual attraction with love in a series of relationships with loser bad boys and continues to put herself in destructive, potentially dangerous situations. Hardcore, she travels for the most part by Greyhound bus, sinking deeper into the underbelly of a world that offers her the anonymity she seeks. Funny, aggressive, fearless and vulnerable, Benny is a road-warrior with a backpack of opiates, a map and a guileless sense of naiveté. In seventy-two days, she travels nearly ten thousand miles overland and more by flight and train; she’s a determined modern-day pioneer.

This coming-of-age novel is narrated with wry humour and filled with a cast of engaging characters. A tale of sexual adventure and feminist learning, Benny looks for escape but emerges a heroine instead; with mistakes, epiphanies and friendships helping forge her a home and a sense of identity in the true North.

My new SIMPLE Skin Routine

Just before the Christmas holidays I was given a gift certificate for a free skin analysis and facial at a local spa here in my area. I finally was able to book an appointment to go. I have to say its been awhile since I had a facial and I thoroughly enjoyed it since it was nice to lay back and relax for an hour.

This was my very first skin analysis and what a wake up call it was because being able to see what is actually under your skin is impressive. Through this I discovered I have some rosacea and that there are some skin products that are actually bothering my skin without me really knowing it.

I have sensitive skin so I always try to be careful what I use. So of course after the facial they do their sales pitch on their line of skin care products that would be best suited for you skin and honestly I loved the products that she used on me and I could feel the difference but with a price tag of $400 for 10 bottles was a little too much for my liking and my pocketbook.

I admit I was a little bummed at the price tag because had it been a reasonable price I would have bought it  but I think things happen for a reason because that day I had come home to my March Topbox and inside was a package of Cleansing Facial Wipes from a UK brand called Simple.

After reading that they are kind to your skin and contain no alcohol, oil, perfumes or dyes. I quickly checked out the website Simple Skin Care . I knew this was the new skin routine I was going to start using.

I have been using the Simple skin care routine for almost two weeks now. You should also know that I was in no way compensate to write this review. All the products I will be talking about were purchased by me.

I went out and bought:

Moisturizing Facial Wash leaves your skin thoroughly cleansed and nourished, plus it’s a perfect blend of our purest possible skin loving ingredients with added vitamins.

SIMPLE GOODNESS
2 ADDED VITAMINS
PRO-VITAMIN B5 known to help restore, soften and smooth

1 SKIN LOVING INGREDIENT
BISABOLOL helps soothe and calm
NO DYES
NO ARTIFICIAL PERFUMES
NO HARSH IRRITANTS to upset skin

Hypoallergenic

I loved how this cleaned and made my face feel. Everything they said this product would do, it did it. I love knowing what I am using products that are good for my skin and that won’t irritate it. I know some facial washes can be harsh on the skin but not this one. It was smooth and lathered really well cleaning my face completely.

Our Replenishing Rich Moisturizer leaves your skin replenished and nourished all day long, plus it’s a perfect blend of our purest possible skin loving ingredients with an added vitamin.

SIMPLE GOODNESS
1 ADDED VITAMIN
PRO-VITAMIN B5 known to help restore, soften and smooth
3 SKIN LOVING INGREDIENTS
GLYCERIN hydrates and nourishes
BISABOLOL helps soothe and calm
ALLANTOIN helps soften
NO DYES
NO ARTIFICIAL PERFUME
NO HARSH IRRITANTS to upset skin

I accidentally bought this by mistake and only realized it after I was using it for a few days. For me the moisturizer felt heavy on my skin and I wasn’t sure why until I went onto the site to check it out. This is meant for people with drier skin so if you have drier skin this would be perfect for you. I will be keeping this on hand just in case my skin gets drier because I know just as the cold season comes I feel the dryness.

Our Hydrating Light Moisturizer leaves your skin hydrated and nourished all day long, plus it’s a perfect blend of our purest possible skin loving ingredients with added vitamins.

NO DYES
NO ARTIFICIAL PERFUMES
NO HARSH IRRITANTS to upset skin

No this was perfect for my skin. It was light and didn’t feel like I was wearing anything. This was the perfect base for my make up. After using this my face felt nourished, hydrated and smooth. This can be used day and night but for me I ended up getting…

Our VITAL VITAMIN Night Cream helps restore and replenish your skin’s moisture balance throughout the night, plus it’s a perfect blend of our purest possible skin loving ingredients with added vitamins.

The reason I ended up buying this night cream was because I liked what it said it would do and waking up in the morning I would notice the difference in my skin because it didn’t feel tight.

One thing I loved about these products is you don’t need to use alot of it a little goes a long way. I am so happy that I discovered this brand new line of skin care. I love it and love what its doing to my skin. I have noticed a difference in my skin tone and appearance.

I am looking forward to trying some of the other products in this line such as the eye creams, (because I notice that my eyes get tired and puffy) make up remover and the exfoliating wipes.

One thing I love is the price they are all reasonably priced. Although if you are planning on trying this out you should really go to walmart because they start at $7.97 and go up to $12.97 Canadian and walmart currently has coupons for $2 off if you buy one or $5 off if you buy two. I did see these at Pharmaprix (Shopper’s Drug Mart to my friends in other parts of Canada) and they were selling them at $17.99. So be sure to shop around.

Its currently available in Canada and I believe in the US now.

About the book
It starts with a whisper: “It’s time for you to know who you are…”

On her 17th birthday, everything will change for Violet Eden. The boy she loves will betray her. Her enemy will save her. She will have to decide just how much she’s willing to sacrifice.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, EMBRACE is a compelling novel of good and evil, seductive desires and impossible choices. A centuries old war between fallen angels and the protectors of humanity chooses a new fighter. It’s a battle Violet doesn’t want, but she lives her life by two rules: don’t run and don’t quit. If angels seek vengeance and humans are the warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden.

LINCOLN: He’s been Violet’s one anchor, her running partner and kickboxing trainer. Only he never told her he’s Grigori—part human, part angel—and that he was training her for an ancient battle between Angels and Exiles.

PHOENIX: No one knows where his loyalties lie, yet he’s the only one there to pick up the pieces and protect her after Lincoln’s lies. In a world of dark and light, he is all shades of gray.

Two sides: Angel or Exile.
Two guys: Lincoln or Phoenix.
The wrong choice could cost not only her life, but her eternity…

I am super excited to have been give the chance to have a guest post from Jessica. So please help me welcome Jessica Shirvington to Cindy’s Love of Books.

Falling in love is easy. Staying in love … more complicated.

At 17, life is about new experiences. It is about self-discovery, friends, adventure, mistakes, career and university choices. And let’s be honest, there are not many 17 year olds out there that aren’t interested in falling in love.

But how many are truly interested in falling in love with THE ONE at 17?

I’m not sure I was. In fact, I probably wasn’t. I was planning to take the world by storm – solo. So when I met Matt, well, actually … it was pretty darn amazing. But it was a little frightening too.

When we first got together, it was sweet and young and … perfect. I was head over heels. But things became complicated quickly. He was an up and coming athletic star and I was working in hospitality. So basically he worked hard in the day, and I worked hard at night. His lifestyle demanded routine and healthy living, mine … not so much. But we were determined to make it work.

Falling in love so deeply at a young age made it difficult to be as reckless as our friends. We watched them coast in and out of short, fun, but meaningless relationships and it just seemed so different to what we had.

Writing the Embrace series has been an opportunity for me to pour some of the incredibly intense emotions of young love into Violet’s story. It has been important for me as a writer, and a person, to recognize that it’s completely realistic for someone at her young age to experience the full effect and heartbreak of love. Violet is one hundred percent invested with her heart. She makes bad choices, but we have to. She regrets many of her decisions, because we all do. And she fights for what she loves, because she is compelled to. Violet’s story is unique to her, I don’t pull on parallel scenarios from my own life, but I do pull on the emotion of intense love. Love that I think adults sometimes forget that 17 and 18 years-olds are very capable of feeling.

I often find one question helps a lot of adults, who maybe disagree with this view, to be more open minded: Do you remember you first true love? Do you ever wonder what your life would’ve been like if you had stayed together? For some, the answer is a resounding NOT INTERESTED, but for others … the pause says it all.

Matt and I celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary in March – I believe jewelry is in order 😉

Another Awesome Upcoming Event

I was super excited to hear about Razorbill is offically planning an event for the launching of Razorbill. Even more excited when I found out that they were coming to Chapters and not just any Chapters but the one that is literally five minutes from my house. There is also signings happening in British Columbia and Toronto.

We don’t get alot of young adult events at this location because of probably the location and turn out. Sadly most of the events will happen down town. The last young adult authors to come to this location was in 2009 when Kelley Armstrong, Scott Westerfield, Holly Black and Casssandra Clare came. Both of the events were a huge turn out and tons of people showed up.

So I am excited to say that the following authors will be making a Montreal appearance:
Jay Asher (so excited because I have both books. Just need to read Thirteen Reasons Why now)
(I am so thrilled Lesley Livingston is a part of this tour. I have all the books apart from Tempestuous which I will have to pick up before the event.)

Charles de Lint is the author of several books but this is the only one that I own. So I will be reading this one very soon, definitely before the event. I love that this is the first book in a series.

So I will be attending this awesome event, will you? If you are planning on attending please let me know and perhaps we can do something after the signing. We could invade the Starbucks upstairs.
The event is happening:
April 18th, 2012 @ 7pm in Pointe Claire, Quebec

Loose Buttons.Luxe Box March Edition

Its that time of the month when I get to share with you my contents of this months Loose Buttons/Luxe Box.

Before I share any of my comments I will just talk about the box and its contents.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got my box Wednesday because I was surprised when I got my notification saying it was shipped and that it actually came when it said it would. Shipping date was correct this time.

The box was very light when I picked it up. This is the card that always comes with the box. I love knowing about the products and how much it sells for. Don’t you?

I loved this little card they sent because you can plant it and flowers will grow. Hmm wonder what kind of flowers they will be?

Seeing as this is an anniversary box I have/had really high hopes for this box. Sadly I am a little disappointed because I thought since it was an anniversary box that there would be a huge WOW factor and for me there wasn’t.

I have to admit that I did watch some Youtube vlogs and it seemed like the ones I watch all contained something different. Here is what was in my box:

This Cargo eyeshadow was part of the First of the Line product offered to its members and you have a choice of what you would like in your box.

When I got the email saying this program was opened I have to admit that I got a little frustrated because it took me over an hour to get into the loose buttons site but finally I was able to get in and actually surprised I managed to snag this.

I love the shades. Its a pink and brown. Very nice. This is a full size product and retails for $16.

My only comment about the first of the line product is that this should be a bonus product to its members.

This is OPI Top Coat. Its a very tiny bottle. Its hard to tell from this picture. The full size is 15 ml for $15 and the sample size is 3.75ml for $3.75. From the look of it its just like a regular style nail polish brush. I didn’t realize that nail polish samples came this small.

I think it would have been nice had they put a nice spring/summer color in instead of a top coat. I can’t speak for others but I have quite a few bottles of top coat and perhaps having a new spring/summer shade would have been really nice.

This is a new product to me as I haven’t heard of this before. Its CHI Silk inFusion. Its a leave in reconstructing treatment. When I opened it, it was like the Morccain Oil. It smells okay but I wonder how many uses you can get out of this small bottle? Something that kind of put me off was the bottle was covered with black gunk. Was anyone elses like that? The full size is 180ml for $33 and I got 15ml for $2.75

As you know I love perfume and being able to try new scents is really nice. This time I got Vera Wang’s Lovestruck. This is pretty new scent because I have been seeing it advertised at my local drugstore. I love the scent its very nice and mild. I could see me wearing this in both the day and night time.

The only thing I hated about it was the bottle because its got an open top meaning when you open it you spill it. I wish there would have been a roll on top or a spritzer. I think I have seen bottles like that somewhere that I will look into getting. The full size is 50ml for $54 and I got a huge sample of 4ml for $4.32

So the price break down:
Vera Wang Lovestruck $4.32
Cargo Eyeshadow $16.00
OPI Top Coat $3.75
CHI Silk Infusion $2.75

Total $26.82

I paid $12 +tax  on this box. So looking at it the box did pay for itself.

My Thoughts:
Like I said above I guess since knowing it was an anniversary box I was expecting a little more of a WOW factor and just didn’t get it.

When I looked at some vlogs, I saw that some got 5 products. Which in my opinion isn’t really fair. I think if you are going to give some people 4 then everyone gets 4 and not half get 4 and the rest get 5. We are all paying the same price so it should be equal.

A little while ago I got a pouch filled with an assortment of perfume samples (my scent) and I thought at the time that I would get that all the time (well not every box) and that it was a program so I was disappointed to find out that some got that this time. So I am a little bummed over that.

Over all this isn’t my favorite box from Loose Buttons (of the month and since subscribing to Loose Buttons) which is too bad because I had high hopes for this one seeing it was an anniversary box.

I am expecting my Glossybox and hoping it comes later this week or early next week.

So as of right now here is my ranking of this months beauty sample boxes:

1. Topbox
2. LooseButtons
3. Glymm

What did you get in yours? What did you think?

Please note that I did not get compensated for this review. I paid for this box with my own money.

I am super excited to have been asked by Lucy Swing (the author) to be a part of this tour. I got introduced to Lucy when she was on the blog for the book tour Death By Chocolate.

Title: Feathermore

Source: I received an Egalley of the book from the author for my honest and sincere review.

About The Book
“When the one thing you live for is taken from you, do you let it go or do you fall?
Jade, like any other student at Brushwood High, awaits the start of the school year with a certain measure of dread. Worse, she is being threatened by a voice that only she can hear—a voice that lurks at the edges of her awareness, haunting her and warning her of something unknown. She has always been able to count on her two best friends, Claire and Nate, but can she confide in them now? About this? Would they even believe her?
Life takes a turn for the better when she meets Avan, a darkly handsome new student who, somehow, seems to drown out the voice and make her feel at ease.

But Jade soon comes to realize that good things don’t last forever. When everything spirals out of control, she is shattered by something she never saw coming. Dazed and despairing, she must now overcome tragedy and embrace her true existence and a new but dangerous love. Will she be able to save herself and those she loves, before it’s too late? Or will she let the surrounding darkness consume her?”

Photobucket

I was super excited when Lucy contacted me and asked me to be a part of the tour for Feathermore. Which is her newest release. I loved the blurb about the book.

I ended up reading this book in one sitting because I enjoyed it that much. I loved the characters and the premise of the book. I loved how there was some romance and a little mystery to the book. There was a little of something to keep you interested.

Jade, is a high school senior at brushwood High. Jade has two best friends, Claire and Nate. Jade appears to be just your regular girl next door, typical kind of girl. Things in Jade’s life are going according to plan until she starts back to school in the fall.

Things are getting a little weird. She has having these dreams that are unexplainable and she starts hearing voices that only she can hear with a warning.

Now that school has returned things haven’t changed she is still being picked up by the school bully and getting her books knocked out of her hands but its when a mysterious new guy arrives that makes the school interesting. The new guy is Avan. Right away you can see Jade is very interested in him. You so know that there is going to be some kind of romance there and I was actually rooting for this.

Its not until World history class that Jade realizes there is something about him because when they first touch there is sparks between them and reading this you know there is something up with him and know that there will be something there for the both of them.

Right away her besties are warning her about him and Jade isn’t sure why. Then it seems like suddenly her besties start acting weird with no reason why although Jade does ask them about it and they just brush her off. I was curious about that too and I think that is why I needed to read more.

Sadly on Jade’s 17th birthday, what is suppose to be a fun and joyous day turns into her worst nightmare because she comes home to find both of her parents dead and this is when she truly finds out what she is.

How will Jade react to the discovery?

The book is told in Jade’s point of view and in Lilith’s point of view. Although I did find Jade’s more of a story and Lilith’s to be a little more history behind it and what made Jade Jade.

In case your wondering who Lilith is, she is basically the villain of the book who is out to get Jade and what she is but will she succeed?

I don’t want to say too much about the book because its really good. Finding out its part of a trilogy I am super excited because I would love to see where the storyline goes and what happens to Jade and her friends.

(Q&A) With Terry Spear

Today I am extremely happy to have the author of one of my favorite series, The Wolf Series stop by to do a Q&A with me. I am always excited when I can get a guest post or Q&A with Terry Spear. I have been fortunated enough to read and review almost all of her Wolf series books and to have her roughly a handful of times either guest posting or answering any questions I might have.

Terry is out and about promoting her newest book:

Her instincts tell her he’s dangerous…
While her overprotective brother’s away, Meara Greymere’s planning to play—and it wouldn’t hurt to find herself a mate in the process. The last thing she needs is one of his SEAL buddies spoiling her fun, even if the guy is the hottest one she’s ever seen…

His powers of persuasion are impossible to resist…
Finn Emerson is a battle-hardened Navy SEAL and alpha wolf. He’s a little overqualified for baby-sitting, but feisty Meara is attracting trouble like a magnet…

As the only responsible alpha male in the vicinity, Finn is going to have to protect this intriguing woman from a horde of questionable men, and definitely from himself…

If you read my review yesterday for A SEAL In Wolf’s Clothing then you already know how much I LOVED the book. I highly recommend all the books in the series because they are just that good.

So please help me welcome Terry Spear once again to Cindy’s Love of Books.

Cindy: If you could pick a favorite character from any of your books who would it be and why?

It’s really hard for me to pick a favorite. Whoever I’m working on is usually my favorite at the time because I have to put my heart and soul into each story and the characters and so while I’m working on those characters, I can’t think about those in earlier stories, unless they’re in the same pack I’m writing about. But I do have to say that when I was writing about Bjornolf (pronounced: “byorn-olf) in A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing, he surprised me, and that’s all I’ll say about it! LOL Sometimes characters will do that to me! I have other plans for them than they have for themselves.

Taken from Terry Spear’s site. This is Bjornolf.

Cindy: You have a new book coming out in the fall from Sourcebooks called A Savage Hunger, will this be a new series?

A Savage Hunger is about jaguar shifters and we’re calling it “Heart of the Jaguar” as a series name. It was a lot of fun doing research about jaguars and incorporating that into the world of jaguar shifters. In the first story, we have Connor and his twin sister, Maya Anderson, who meet up with a human, Kathleen McKnight. Wounded during an Army mission gone wrong, Kathleen sees her knight in shining armor, bare chest, bare feet, wearing only a pair of khakis as he attempts to save her life. When she returns to the jungle a year later, she seeks to thank him for saving her, but here she thought her life was turned upside down the first time she saw him! Boy was she ever wrong!!!

Cindy: You have written quite a few books in the wolf series, how do you come up with inspiration for each book to make it different?

Sometimes setting can make a real difference, definitely plot, and then adding new characters can help to make the story different. In each one, I’ve tried to come up with something really unique. In Heart of the Wolf, the whole concept of red wolves and gray that are based on real wolves. In Destiny of the Wolf, a town run by wolves. In To Tempt the Wolf, that some humans are not what they seem, and it was the first story where humans were changed. In Legend of the White Wolf, the introduction of Arctic wolves, and a hero and heroine who begin as humans who have no support system when they’re turned. In Seduced by the Wolf, I based the story on a real wolf romance! In Wolf Fever, we had a heroine who was turned in a previous book, the first story where readers asked to see her get her happily ever after and she’s the first psychic wolf and it was based on the WHO issuing warnings at that time about a major flu epidemic. In Heart of the Highland Wolf, it’s the first Highland story, first poor werewolf story (because one of my coworkers challenged me to write about a poor werewolf!), and was based on the Madoff scandal. In Dreaming of the Wolf, again, by fan requests, I wrote the next oldest of the Silver brother’s story, but set him in a new location away from the pack where he gets tied up with a human female and the Mob. And now A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing, back to Hunter’s pack and his sister, again, by readers’ requests. I just finished A Howl for the Highlander, which was the 2nd in the Highland wolf series, dealing with unfinished business—the stolen money in the first book, and what happens when the dark warrior, Duncan MacNeill, allows himself to be majorly distracted by a female wolf in an island paradise.

Cindy: When you’re not writing, what do you like to do for fun?

I make award-winning bears, love to garden, hike, swim, and tour castles. Since we don’t have any around here, that means I have to go elsewhere!!! Like to Scotland!

Cindy: How long did it take you to write A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing?

That’s been a long time ago! LOL. Since I wrote that one, I also wrote A Savage Hunger and A Howl for the Highlander. I think it was 4 months for A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing.

Cindy: In A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing, what would the reader be surprised to discover about the book?

Now see, if I told readers this, it wouldn’t be a surprise!!!

Cindy: If you were stranded on a desert island, what would be your top three things you would want to have with you?

A SEAL!!! They’re trained for any eventuality. That’s all I would really need. One hunky, hot SEAL.

Cindy: If you were to pick a favorite kind of wolf what would it be and why?

A SEAL-wolf. Have you seen those abs?

Thanks so much Terry for answering my questions. I love having you on my blog and reading your books. You are the best.

Thanks so much for having me here today, Cindy! As always, I enjoy visiting with you!
