(Armchair BEA) Getting to Know Me

This year Arm Chair BEA has done something different. In the previous two years bloggers got to interview other bloggers. Which is always fun because you get to meet another blogger. This year they are actually doing something very different and it sounds like so much fun, instead of interviewing another blogger Armchair BEA is asking us to interview ourselves and then head back to Armchair BEA’s site to leave our link and apparently I guess if a blogger leaves the most comments on blogs they could have a chance to win an awesome prize. How awesome is that?

Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging?

Hi everyone, my name is Cindy and I am a Canadian blogger. I have been blogging since August of 2008. So that is almost 4 years of blogging. I have always been a heavy reader and reading all the time and I wanted a place to record my thoughts on books for further reference.

What are you currently reading, or what is your favorite book you have read so far in 2012?

At the time of writing this (May 23rd) I am currently reading Abandon by Meg Cabot and I hate to admit this but I am also reading and pretty much devouring the Fifty Shades Trilogy. Thanks to Rachel at ParaJunkee who is doing a read a long for the first book. Her recap on the chapters is so funny and it pretty much hooked me in. So thanks Rachel LOL.

Tell us one non-book-related thing that everyone reading your blog may not know about you.

Hmm, one non-book-related thing that anyone reading my blog might not know about me? Hmm that is a good one and as you can see I am stumbling a bit on this. I guess one thing would be that when the warmer weather hits I am    constantly at Tim Hortons odering an Ice Cap for myself. I love ice caps and its a perfect cold coffee drink in the summer.

What is your favorite feature on your blog (i.e. author interviews, memes, something specific to your blog)?

My favorite feature on my blog that is my all time favorite has to be author interviews. I always try to think of something orginal to ask the authors to make it different from other blogs. I also love doing my beauty box posts because even though I am very much about the books I also enjoy make up and stuff.

Where do you see your blog in five years?

I hope that I am still blogging then and if I am I would love to see it still covering books and beauty stuff. Hopefully by then since Michael will be 14 years old he will be helping me out and doing some reviews and such. I am also hoping that I will have more events covered on my blog.

Which is your favorite post that you have written that you want everyone to read?

HEHE, can I say this one? I have been trying to think what my all time favorite post has been and really I have liked them all. I love writing book reviews, sharing guest posts and author interviews and everything else book related.

If you could eat dinner with any author or character, who would it be and why?

If I could have dinner with any author it would have to be Lesley Livingston because the day that I got to meet her she was so funny and I think it would be a blast to sit down and chat with her because I am sure I would be laughing the whole time.

What literary location would you most like to visit? Why?

For me when I think of location I can’t  help but think of New York City just because so many publishing houses are there. I love NYC and have been twice already and I love it. So much to see and do there. I always have a blast when I am there.

What is your favorite part about the book blogging community? Is there anything that you would like to see change in the coming years?

My favorite part of the book blogging community is the friends you make both online and in real life. I have met so many people in real life that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. I discovered that some many bloggers will go out of their way to help you out (you know who you are).

As for changes I really think that we should be helping each other out more. If someone contacts you about something reach out and help them out. I have had some awesome bloggers offering advise to me when I would reach out and encountered so many bloggers who wouldn’t help out. I mean we were all newbies in the beginning and had no idea what we were doing so being able to help someone out is a good thing. Its all about the Karma. I think this is why I am so willing to help people out because I know what its like to reach out and get turned down.

Have your reading tastes changed since you started blogging? How?

Oh yea my reading tastes have changed a great deal since I have been blogging. I hate to say that I was very narrow in what I would read and it was mainly James Patterson, V.C Andrews, Jodi Picoult, etc but since blogging I have expanded my genre of reading. I have been reading alot more young adult and paranormal. I think this is one of the best things about blogging because I have given so many books a try that I honestly probably wouldn’t have read on my own.

Thank you Armchair BEA for organizing this I had so much fun answering these questions.

(Review & Tour) Dark Side of Valor

I am happy that I was able to get on the blog tour for Alicia Singleton’s book Dark Side of Valor. I am honored to be the first person to kick off this virtual tour and if you would like to follow the rest of the tour be sure to click on this . There is still room on the tour if you would like to take part.

    About the book:
Child advocate Lelia Freeman saves children for a living. As the director of ChildSafe Shelters, she ventures to abandoned squats and crackhouses to rescue teens from the hellish streets of Los Angeles. When she is summoned to Washington to serve on a committee that aids the children of a war-torn African nation, Lelia is kidnapped and becomes a political pawn in a sinister conspiracy. Oceans away from everything she knows, she must trust a mercenary to save her life, or die in the clutches of a psychopath.

Hunting, combat and staying alive are Elijah Dune’s specialties. Vengeance is his passion. Haunted by past demons, he’s travels to the Motherland to collect a debt. A debt that demands one payment. Death.

Caught in the crosshairs of a madman, Lelia and Elijah must survive the jungles of Zaire and the horrors of their pasts or be forever consumed by the DARK SIDE OF VALOR.

    About the author:
Born and raised in Philadelphia, the Howard University graduate embraced the written word at an early age. She credits this to her loving, older sister whom, while they were youngsters, made the author eat lotion on a regular basis. Realizing the need to sound-out the ingredients on the lotion label, Alicia stopped the lotion-eating practice, but continued to read the labels of the concoctions her sister brought for her to try. This early necessity to read flowered to a passion; hence, a writer was born. The award winning author resides in Maryland with her wonderful husband and son. Still an avid reader, label or otherwise, Alicia is hard at work completing her next suspense novel. Her latest book is the suspense novel, Dark Side of Valor.

I should start off by saying that this book was released in February 2012 and this is Alicia’s debut novel.

One of the things I love about blogging is the chance to discover new authors and books. I really enjoy it if they are debut authors because you can’t compare their other books to this one.

When I first heard about the book I have to say the blurb got me. It sounded it look it would be a different read from my regular stuff and while I was reading it I was enjoying it. I think when you read certain kinds of books for a while a change is needed just to refresh you.

I didn’t read this one quickly although I wanted to because this was a great book filled with suspense and it was fast paced. The was just enough happening to not be over the top and as you were reading it you could actually see this being a true story.

Lelia is the main character and she is nick named Street Angel. Lelia grew up on the streets and you can tell she didn’t have an easy life growing up and even in her adult life she is being haunted by nightmares of the dark side.

Lelia decided when she was old enough that she would become a child advocate and be the voice for these children. Thankfully she got out before it was too late but that wasn’t the case for her best friend who fell victim to the street life.

Lelia works hard and her efforts and recognized and she is nominated to go to Africa to work with orphan children who lost their parents and loved ones to the civil war. Once getting to Africa Lelia quickly realizes that its not what it seems and this is dangerous for her and her life is in jeapordy.

I know once I got to this part I had a hard time putting the book down.

I think if you like suspense you will enjoy this book.

Thanks Pump Up Your Book for allowing me to kick off this tour.

Glossy Box comes to Party in Montreal

I am so  happy that I stumbled into blogging almost four years ago because it has opened so many doors to me that I might not have known about otherwise and its given me so many great opportunities to attend so many great events such as author events, book conventions etc.

What you might not know about me is that I am also part of another blogging community that involves Canadian bloggers who blog about other things other then books and this community has been so welcoming, supportive and giving.

This was the case about two weeks ago when a blogger reached out to the Montreal members asking if they would like to attend a Glossy Box event here. I quickly replied back to her saying “YES! I would love to attend!”

As you know I LOVE Glossy Box. They are pretty much the best beauty box subscription out there right now.

I have seen other bloggers who attend another beauty box subscription event and was so jealous but then again that happened in Toronto so I was okay with it and wondered when Montreal would do something like this? Well low and behold Glossy box read my mind and came.

I had no idea what to expect when I was arriving. All I knew was that their would be a beauty bar, braid bar, and a candy bar. Sadly I arrived late (due to traffic) and wasn’t able to take part in the beauty (make was being done with tips) and braid (hair was being done as well) bars. I missed the candy bar all together as it must have been hiding in  a corner somewhere.

Anyways when I stepped off the elevator, I was greeted by a check in line and while I was there I entered my business card for a huge gift basket of goodies. Emily was super nice and friendly. As I left the table I saw a sidewall that was stacked with tons of Glossy box boxes (I wish I would have snapped a photo.) and a line of pretty pink gift bags.

Don’t they look so pretty. I wonder what it was like when the doors first opened? From the entrance I was walking around and spotted this table. Its a display of all the Canadian Glossy boxes. From February to May.

Another item on display was Sebastin as this was include in our boxes recently.

This is just another shot of the boxes. It was nice to see the other products that were in the boxes.

Every where around the Spa there was these beautiful flowers. They smelled so good and they were in my favorite color, pink.

Just before leaving I was asked if I wanted to step inside the Glossy box and honestly  I couldn’t resist. It was so pretty.

The box is the exact replicate of what we get monthly and I love the look of it.

I also got to meet Jillian who I believe is Public Relations with Glossy Box. She was super sweet and nice. I told her how much I love my Glossy Box and this is by far the best box out there. I look forward to working with her again.

When it was time to leave we were handed this awesome pink bag and OMG it was heavy and a Glossy Box. I love the bag and just like their boxes it was elegant and simple.

It also smelled so good. I noticed the smell as I was driving home. That really peeked my curiousity. What was in the bag that made it smell so good?

Jillian and I stepped in to the Biore photo booth and she was so funny. Thanks Jillian.

A sneak peek into the bag. All I have to say is that Glossy Box spoiled the attendees above and beyond what I was expecting. So thank you Glossy Box for this.

I just love their logo. Elegant and simple.

When I removed the tissue paper I was in total shock because wow this is amazing. I felt so spoiled and pampered. I had no idea where to begin when I saw this.

This cute little make up bag caught my attention. Its actually bigger then what it looks like.

Not to bombard you with a thousand pictures although there is alot in this post and I apologize, I thought I would just group a bunch and take pictures for you.  This one includes: Evian Brumisateur facial spray (150ml), Sebastin Re-Shaper hair spray (300g) , Marc Anthony Salon Expert color care hair spray (250g), John Freida Frizz-Ease (60ml so excited I have been wanting to try this), Algemarin Dry Shampoo (200ml, this is a new to me product but excited to try it), Wella Brilliance Conditioner (250ml LOVE this) and Wella shampoo (300ml LOVE this too)

Boire Combination skin balancing cleanser (200ml) This is also a new product I am excited to try. The next product which I haven’t heard of until this is the Elin Blanco (115ml) its a hair serum that you put in your hair.

So you remember that cute make up bag from above? Well inside that was a Bailey’s blush duo (9g). I was excited to get this because this was in a recent box. Impress is a press on manicure (24 nails so thats two uses) that I have been seeing around lately and what a cute idea you just peel and press. I got Alegmarin (15ml) recently and loved it and didn’t get the chance to go out and buy more so this will be nice to use again, we got some more Beauty so clean products (wipes x4 / spary 8ml), Kiss fake eyelashes and then from It Cosmetics I got an brow power iniversal brow pencil and water proof concealer and it came in the shade of neutal/medium.

Then if that wasn’t enough we all got the May box.

I got a similiar box with the exception of the Pandora lipstick. Its the shade of butterscotch. Its a full size product and sells for $16. It was creamy and non sticky. I think mine tasted like spearmint.

You can check my previous post to see more about the May box.

Thanks so muc once again to Jillian and Glossy Box for allowing me to attend this fantastic event. I hope you will come back again.

    Glossy Box May Edition

I am super excited to have gotten my Glossy Box today (Thursday) because I had no idea when I was going to get it since Canada Post didn’t mail out tracking info. I was hoping to get it before I left for NYC because I would have worried otherwise wondering if someone would be home to accept this box since most of these beauty box subscriptions have put “Don’t Safe Drop this” and that would mean if no one was here then the box would be sent to the post office and I would need to pick it up.

Lets get started shall we. Okay its the standard box and I find these ones so much easier to open then most other boxes. Just a reminder that this is a $15 a month Canadian beauty box subscription service.

I love these boxes not only are the simple that you can reuse for anything but they are also very sturdy. No flimsy box here. I have managed to use all of my boxes for something else. Its great to store things in.

As  you can see its still the same packaging of black tissue paper, a simple sticker and a dusty rose ribbon. I love how multi purpose the box is because a have a ribbon from a previous box as my bookmark.

I kind of like the black envelope that holds the cards. That too us reusable.

One thing I noticed this month in the cards was that we got two one in English and the other in french. Not sure if all the boxes are now like that but I thought that was really nice of them to do it. The other card is for boxx cosmetics with a 25% off my first order.

Before even looking at the card I knew this would be another fantastic box because it was heavy and that is always a good sign.

Once I pulled the tissue paper back this is what my box looked like.

Not only did boxx cosmetics give Glossy Box subscribers 25% off their first order but they also included this Cream Corrector in the shade of Melina. I am pretty sure this was hand picked for me since its a light shade compared to others I have seen. So this is actually a full size product at 4grams for $24. As you can see this one product has paid for the box.

I have never heard of boxx cosmetics before this but I am excited to try this out since its an oil free cream corrector that blends seamlessly into the skin leaving it look natural and flawless. Whats great about this is that is not only a concealer but its also a primer, foundation and brightner.

Another brand I am excited to get is the Simple. I love their skin care products and these two have been on my wishlist to buy and now I can try them out. The bottle is make up remover and the size they sent was 56ml and its worth $9.99 and I believe this is a full size product.

The other Simple product is Facial wash gel. This is also another full size product and its 50ml for $9.99 so being able to try these before I buy is awesome.

If you are like me you probably encounter dry heels and feet and that is from wearing all kinds of different summer shoes and such. I have to say I tried this last night and I love this product. I am curious what night two will hold for my feet. I am pretty sure this is a full size product too. Its 100ml for $3.99 I just noticed that its a new product.

Now if you know me you know I am a shampoo addict. I love trying new shampoos so imagine my surprise when I saw this particular brand. Its Sebastian’s Professional Volupt Shampoo. This is also another full size product and its 250ml for $15.78

    The shampoo smells heavenly

So the total value of the box is $63.75 and if you minus what I paid for it ($15.00) it would be $48.75 so this box paid for itself.

I have to say that by far Glossy Box is my absolute favorite. I mean they said they will send out 5 luxury items with a chance of a bonus item and since February they have lived up to that promise and sending out luxury items and full size products. Glossy box is well worth the $15 a month.

Thanks Glossy box for having one of the best boxes out there. Its nice to get these fantastic products to try before you buy.

Did you get Glossy box this month? What did you get? What did you think of it?
