If We Were Having Tea….. #11

hotcoffee_2

If we were having tea… I would tell you that is been a good week even though it was a cold week.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that its going to be a busy hockey weekend because we are in a tournament. Sadly we lost our game yesterday 2-3 (but we could have won it) and since we lost it we play today and fingers crossed.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that last week Michael got his first penality of the season. It was nothing major.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that Michael has a short school week this week as he goes to school Monday and Wednesday for exams and then he is off the rest of the week. He is happy to have a break.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that I made it a point  that I was going to ease up on my book buying for 2016 and decided that when I go to Chapters I need to budget myself. This past week I failed a bit but I know I will do better.

If we were having tea... I would tell you that it was a early morning because I had to get Michael to the arena to get his hockey pictures done.

If we were having tea… I would tell you so far I am doing good with daily blogging and reading. I am making it a point to blog daily and to read at least one book a week and sometimes I have to pick up another one because one book isn’t enough for the week. I am doing really good as I have already read 4 books so far this month.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that it was great seeing you again this week and that I can’t wait until next week. I hope you have a good week.

Review/ The Mystics of Mile End

Review/ The Mystics of Mile EndThe Mystics of Mile End by Sigal Samuel

Sigal Samuel’s debut novel, in the vein of Nicole Krauss’s bestselling The History of Love, is an imaginative story that delves into the heart of Jewish mysticism, faith, and family.“This is not an ordinary tree I am making.“This,” he said, “this is the Tree of Knowledge.” In the half-Hasidic, half-hipster Montreal neighborhood of Mile End, eleven-year-old Lev Meyer is discovering that there may be a place for Judaism in his life. As he learns about science in his day school, Lev begins his own extracurricular study of the Bible’s Tree of Knowledge with neighbor Mr. Katz, who is building his own Tree out of trash. Meanwhile his sister Samara is secretly studying for her Bat Mitzvah with next-door neighbor and Holocaust survivor, Mr. Glassman. All the while his father, David, a professor of Jewish mysticism, is a non-believer.When, years later, David has a heart attack, he begins to believe God is speaking to him. While having an affair with one of his students, he delves into the complexities of Kabbalah. Months later Samara, too, grows obsessed with the Kabbalah’s Tree of Life—hiding her interest from those who love her most–and is overcome with reaching the Tree’s highest heights. The neighbors of Mile End have been there all along, but only one of them can catch her when she falls.

I received this book for free from publisher/pr firm in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I was lucky enough to attend a Book Blogger event when I was at BEA 2015 and pick up this little hidden gem while I was there.

Two things I loved about going into this book was one that it takes place here in a part of Montreal called the Mile End and secondly this is a Canadian author. I am making it my mission in 2016 to read more Canadian authors.

I should let you know that this is a debut novel. I love reading debut novels.

The books is broken down into four parts and each telling a part of the story. The four parts are Lev, Samara, (who are a brother and sister) David (their father) and the Mile End.

In the first section is about Lev and his journey. This was such a fun section and I loved how Lev kept trying to match up his dad with is teacher or vise versa. You can tell that he just wanted his dad to be happy after his mother died. What kid doesn’t want that for their parent?

As a young boy he doesn’t realize that his dad has already met someone else. He thought when he smelt the perfume it was his dad spraying himself with the mother’s perfume. I have to say that I wish Sigal would have touched more on the friendship that Lev had with Alex and what happened.

Also in this chapter we meet the very eccentric neighbor Mr. Katz. He is quite the character and I think he was another character I would have loved to know more about. I loved how he was building a Tree of Knowledge in his front yard. We are also introduced to Mr. Glassman who is taking care of his sick wife who has had a stroke and over time she isn’t doing well. I loved how Mr. Glassman would tell Lev about the numbered tattoos on his arm and so much more. Mr. Glassman reminded me so much of my parents and when my dad got sick and passed away, my mom didn’t want to be left behind on her own and Mr Glassman was the exact same way he didn’t want to live without his wife. This was so touching and sad and yes I did cry. So be prepared for the tears to flow.

The second section is about David. David is Lev and Samara’s dad. I think once his wife died he become more distant from his children and in their religion. David provides the back ground story and what happened the night his wife was killed in a car accident. We also discover another side to David that even his children don’t know about and what his father has been up to all this time.

The third section is about Samara. Samara is like the wild child, reckless and dangerous in a way. Behind everyone’s back she goes a head and takes classes so that she can do her Bat Mitzvah. Its with Mr. Glassman’s help that she does this. I think with everything going on she abandons it until discovering her father’s manuscripts and this seems to entice her. But can she be saved before its too late?

Finally the last chapter is about the Mile End and this is where I feel as though I was missing something along the way. With Samara hallucinating about the Tree of Knowledge and physically climbing Mr Katz’s hand made Tree of Knowledge in his front yard. I just didn’t quite understand that.

This certainly won’t detour me from reading future books from Sigal. I am determined to reread this book again to see if perhaps I missed something. Did I miss something?

DIY/ Happiness Jar

IMG_0001

Towards the end of last year I decided that for 2016 I was going to keep track of all the good things that happened during the year instead of focusing on all the negative or bad things that happened. As you know 2015 was a rough year with my father in law passing (towards the end of 2014) and then my mom passing in August and dealing with both estates etc so 2016 has got to be my year.

What is a Happiness Jar?

So with that thought came this Happiness Jar. The purpose of the Happiness Jar is that you are suppose to write down good things that happen to you daily on pieces of paper and put them in a jar, container etc. You can even mention a surprise gift you got, accompolishing a goal or goals, seeing something in nature that takes your breath away, a funny moment in your day, a memory that you want to remember, and the list goes on and on but you get the point right?

Supplies you will need to make your own:

  • a jar or something to put your little notes in (you can buy on jar or use what you have)
  • paper (you can use colored paper, plain paper, post it notes, etc)
  • a pen, pencil, crayon, maker (anything to write with)
  • a label for your jar, stickers etc

I ended up purchasing my items at Dollarama. This was under $5 to do as I purchased the jar, the memo cube colored notes *because they are the perfect size) and a new pen as well as some stickers and a label. I haven’t added those on yet but plan to very soon.

To Begin:

I started doing this on January 1, 2016 and at the end of the each day before bed I sat and wrote one good thing that happened that day and I put that date on the paper. Then you fold it up and place it in your jar. Don’t read the jar until December 31st, 2016.

I decided when I started this that I would alternate the colors just to make the jar a little more colorful although I am thinking I might have to upgrade my jar as I don’t think this will be big enough to hold the entire year without it looking squashed.

Have you ever thought of doing a happiness jar?

In the spirit of Station Eleven and The Age of Miracles, this exciting literary debut novel imagines the consequences when four ordinary individuals are granted a chance to continue their lives in genetically perfect versions of their former bodies.

Would you live your life differently if you were given a second chance? Hannah, David, Connie, and Linda—four terminally ill patients—have been selected for the SUBlife pilot program, which will grant them brand-new, genetically perfect bodies that are exact copies of their former selves—without a single imperfection. Blemishes, scars, freckles, and wrinkles have all disappeared, their fingerprints are different, their vision is impeccable, and most importantly, their illnesses have been cured.

But the fresh start they’ve been given is anything but perfect. Without their old bodies, their new physical identities have been lost. Hannah, an artistic prodigy, has to relearn how to hold a brush; David, a Congressman, grapples with his old habits; Connie, an actress whose stunning looks are restored after a protracted illness, tries to navigate an industry obsessed with physical beauty; and Linda, who spent eight years paralyzed after a car accident, now struggles to reconnect with a family that seems to have built a new life without her. As each tries to re-enter their previous lives and relationships they are faced with the question: how much of your identity rests not just in your mind, but in your heart, your body?

Would you live your life differently if you were given a second chance?

That is what sold me on the book when I got pitched it to read.

I had no idea what was going to happen and after a bit of a slow start I have to say that I ended up really enjoying the story.

What a great way to ring in 2016 then with a debut novel.

As my readers you know I don’t dip myself into a lot of sci fi and that is mainly because its not usually my cup of tea but I have to admit that after reading this I am a little curious about the whole genre. Although, And Again isn’t really in the sci fi section is more of a fiction book that has the sci fi element to it with the cloning of real life people. The story line is modern day and it wasn’t really a far fetched story line like most sci fi is.

I really enjoyed the four main characters: Linda, Hannah, Connie and David. All four people come from four different walks of life all with a tragic life threatening aliments that get them into this program. The book begins as the four patients are waking up from the transformations. As the story progesses we discover secrets, lies and betrayals. They are all going through changes and learning to adjust to their new lives. Will all four be able to adjust to their new bodies or will the revert to their past ways and hinder their progress?

The chapters are all told in alternating points of view from the four characters and its not confusing at all to follow it along and Jessica keeps each chapter quick and simple and she makes it work.

Another thing I loved about the book was that it was all wrapped up at the end and nothing was left hanging.

So my question for you is, Would you live your life differently if you were given a second chance?

In the After

Publication date: February 2nd 2016
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Sadie Reynolds is a liar with secrets. At school, she’s part of the popular crowd known as AE, despite being broken inside. She hides it well. She has to. The slightest bit of imperfection will land her in the same shoes as her Geeky neighbor named Ian.

Ian and his only friend are the object of Sadie’s friends’ ridicule, ire, and entertainment. The AE rule the school with intimidation and retribution against anyone who would dare question their supremacy.

Sadie steers clear of most of it, terrified someone will find out her secret. She isn’t the least bit perfect. In fact, she suffers from PTSD stemming from the murder of her mother right before her eyes when she was a child. She can barely cope from day-to-day, hiding her truth and trying to fit in. But she knows it’s only a matter of time.

Hayden is a “Waverly,” a kid with the misfortune of living in the small farming town of Waverly that borders the very affluent Lexington Parrish. The AE doesn’t mix with “Waverlies.” Ever.

Desperate to get away from her oppressive friends, Sadie crashes into Hayden at a bonfire and the attraction that sparks between them is nothing short of electric. But Hayden’s an outsider and when things heat up, Sadie will be forced to choose between her friends and her new boyfriend.

Only Queen Bee Britt isn’t having it. She will not allow Sadie to cross her. Sadie can either do what Britt wants her to do or she will reveal Sadie for the PTSD freak that she is.

Sadie does some soul searching about who she is and who she wants to be. She can’t live her life like this. Not any more. One fateful night will help her see how much things have to change.

She’s determined to no longer allow the AE to rule her life. She will be strong, stand up for Ian and love who she wants in Hayden. Determined and invigorated, Sadie goes to school feeling hopeful for the first time in forever.

But, the unthinkable happens.

Shooters attack dozens of students before the two eventually take their own lives, leaving the school a decimated shadow of what it once was.

Suddenly who lives where, wears what or loves whom seems like the least of Lexington Parish’s problems as everyone and everything changes forever in the after.

IN THE AFTER by Elisa Dane is a hard-hitting and heart-warming story of tragedy, love, loss and redemption. It is recommended for readers 14+.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? #2

It's Monday! What Are You Reading

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week.  It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog   and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

Jen Vincent, Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee of Unleashing Readers decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join them!

Last week I managed to finish And Again by Jessica Chiarella and my review will be posted tomorrow since the book is released tomorrow.

I wasn’t sure if it was going to take me all week to read it so I didn’t have anything planned so I had to pick a new book. So I decided to dip into my BEA15 stash and I discovered that The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald is a January 19, 2016 release. Perfect. I am about half way done and will probably need to find a new book before the week is done.

I think I will leave this as is just in case so I am not pressuring myself to read to much at once and I think this is what happened the last time I did this meme. I will focus on one book and if needed I will pick another one and add it next week.

What are you reading this week?
