Before… They are the Musketeers–one for all and all for Rain, or however that saying goes.

Now that Rain’s sixteen, freedom is at her fingertips. Cliff jumping at the lake. Rain’s first tattoo. Spence finally asking her out. With her friends by her side, there’s no reason Rain can’t be happy in a world that constantly tries to extinguish her addictive, carefree spirit.

After… It’s just Rain. No misfits and no Musketeers.

Until Rain pulls up to her new summer job and discovers the two people she’s been hiding from–Spence and Landon– are her new cabin mates. Landon’s determined to help Rain overcome her guilt and remember what once was. As they become closer, he awakens a part of her soul she never thought she’d feel again.

Making Rain wonder if, despite all the mistakes she’s made, it’s worth trying to get back to the girl she used to be.

EXCERPT FROM THE BIG DOGS

BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE AGAIN

Two months to the day after Thanksgiving, Miss Grace Yunqué, of East Elmhurst, Queens, rose late on her day off, fixed herself brunch, then boarded the westbound M60 bus at 23rd Avenue.

She preferred taking the bus whenever she could. The subways saved time, but were fraught with risk. Despite a heavy police presence underground at key times and terminals, the cop coverage tended to thin out to nothingness towards the outer boroughs, and unless there was someone with a badge and gun on the platform with her, she simply didn’t feel safe on the subways any more.

Besides, the bus was fast, thanks to the Mayor’s enforcement of bus-only lanes across major bridges. And it was comfortable. Miss Grace Yunqué had no idea which kind of bus she rode along the M60 route (a slightly older Orion VII Next Generation semi-low floor hybrid electric built by Daimler Commercial Buses), but it was quite good. She had seen much, much worse in her day.

As usual, the bus looped north through LaGuardia International Airport, meandering by the Marine Air Terminal on Bowery Bay, before settling down for its long westward cruise along Astoria Boulevard. As the bus arced out across the Robert Kennedy Bridge spanning the Hell Gate section of the East River, she looked down upon Wards and Randalls Islands far below, dusted with snow. She was mentally planning her own route. While her main business of the day was routine (a followup visit to Dr. Lazar regarding her condition), the stop she planned to make afterwards was anything but.

Miss Grace Yunqué was a homely, portly Latina of Peruvian descent in her late fifties who was starting to feel gravity’s pull more acutely. Her arches were falling, her heels ached at night, and her ass seemed to spread wider with each passing year. Her husband was dead, her children grown and struggling with families of their own. What little brightness there was in her life came from her grand-nephew José, and her Pomeranian, Hector.

Still, it wasn’t all bad. She had worked for years keeping the books of a small firm that made spare parts for servicing city buses. The benefits were good, and she had her late husband’s small pension coming in as well, which she diligently invested in TIPS, inflation-protected bonds that had been adjusted for the extended period of low rates following the crash. Miss Grace Yunqué did not know when the city’s fortunes would take a turn for the better, but she intended to have a toe in the water when they did. She believed the city would rise again—someday, perhaps not even in her lifetime, but someday—and she wanted to have something to bequeath to her darling little niňo José.

Which was why she was heading into Manhattan this morning, to report the goings-on she’d been seeing in the company’s financial statements for months now. She knew fraud when she saw it, and she intended to cash in by reporting it.

“Fuck you, asshole. I didn’t come here to be your friend and as for your sarcastic, bullshit comments about the way I look, keep them to your damn self. You made fun of the way I looked enough when we were growing up, I sure as hell don’t have to put up with it now.”

“Princess, I…”

“And stop fucking calling me that. I’ve always hated that shit. I’m not a damn princess. I don’t put myself on a pedestal and look down on people the way you always said I did,” she growls in a low tone as she looks around to make sure no one is watching.

“Wait, Prin…Cindy. Tha..”

“Save it Shane, the bullshits over. We have to make this trip together but we’re not going to accomplish anything this way. I know mom and Jim wanted us to be friends but I will not let you belittle me,” she continues through gritted teeth, then gets up to stomp out of the restaurant.

I leave more than enough money on the table to pay the check and run after her, catching her just outside the door. “What the hell was that all about?” I ask as I grab her arm to slow her down. She yanks free and keeps walking. I decide to shut up because whatever I say, she’s gonna take it wrong. Bitch switch has definitely been flipped.

As we near the door of the hotel, she stumbles and almost eats pavement but I catch her before she does. “Let me go!” she says as she’s trying to regain her footing.

“You got it, Princess,” I say as I lower her to the ground and walk off. As much as I wanted to, I didn’t drop her to the ground. Even I’m not that much of an asshole. This damn sure hasn’t started out well and I’m sure it’s not gonna end well, but what the hell; I’m not doing this for her anyway so I continue on to the room without looking back.

Codenamed ODIN, he is More’s nemesis and they rock the city from the spires of Saint John the Divine to the bowels of the city’s subways. If we were having tea… I would tell you that I think Spring is finally coming. The weather all last week was above +1 and the snow is melting at an incredible rate. YEA!

If we were having tea… I would tell you that for a few days last week my little visitor returned to the tree in front of the house. We think he has been hiding under the shed but with the snow melting its flooding in the back so he is looking for a place to sleep.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that Michael had his first play off game yesterday and we lost badly 5-1. So tomorrow is do or die for them.

If we were having tea... I would tell you that this week is going to be busy with hockey, parent teacher interviews and hanging out with my friend, Jennifer and sister this week.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that this week I need to do some baking as I found a really good cookie recipe that I would like to make for Easter.

If we were having tea… I would tell you that this week I need to start shopping for Easter. Are you ready for Easter? What do you do? What do you make?

If we were having tea… I would tell you that it was great seeing you again this week and that I can’t wait until next week. I hope you have a good week.

Review/ Monument 14: Sky On Fire

Review/ Monument 14: Sky On FireSky on Fire (Monument 14, #2) by Emmy Laybourne

Goodreads

Trapped in a superstore by a series of escalating disasters, including a monster hailstorm and terrifying chemical weapons spill, brothers Dean and Alex learned how to survive and worked together with twelve other kids to build a refuge from the chaos. But then strangers appeared, destroying their fragile peace, and bringing both fresh disaster and a glimmer of hope.
Knowing that the chemical weapons saturating the air outside will turn him into a bloodthirsty rage monster, Dean decides to stay in the safety of the store with Astrid and some of the younger kids. But their sanctuary has already been breached once. . . .
Meanwhile, Alex, determined to find their parents, heads out into the darkness and devastation with Niko and some others in a recently repaired school bus. If they can get to Denver International Airport, they might be evacuated to safety. But the outside world is even worse than they expected. . . .

I am so happy that I had book two on stand by because I am loving this series and I am trying hard not to zip right through this one but its really hard because you are sucked in right away. It was hard to put this book down at times.

This is just like the first one, it will take you on a roller coaster ride and have you flipping the pages and sitting on the edge of your seat.

Sky On Fire picks right up where Monument 14 (book 1) left off. Most of the kids have left the Greenway and Dean, Astrid,Chloe and the twins have remained behind. Alot has gone down in the first book that carries over into this book. The kids quickly realize that the Greenway is no longer a safe haven so the kids who have left in the bus are determined to make it to Denver and get help back to the kids still at the Greenway.

Alex and Dean are the narrators this time around and each tells their story in alternating chapters so you got a feel of what was going on in the outside world and what is happening in Greenway. Each tell quite the story of what is happening in both places.

I am trying really hard not to say to much about the book and spoil it for those that want to read it. So I will tell you is that you will not expect that things that happen in this book to happen. There is so happy endings and there is some sadness but I think that is to be expected.

I am excited to start the third and final book in the series and my review should be posted the day after this one goes up.

Does this sound like something you would read?
