Secret Santa Gift Unboxing

A facebook group I am a part of recently organized a Secret Santa and I quickly signed up. I love taking part in these kinds of exchanges.

Its been awhile since I took part in a non bookish Secret Santa so I had alot of fun going out and picking up some favorite things and things I hope my reciever would like. I found out that she did in fact love the package I sent her. The group is mom bloggers who blog about non bookish things.

Today I thought I would share what my Secret Santa sent me. I have no idea who it is and I just have to say curiousity is killing the cat here. Please Secret Santa put me out of my misery…..lol
This is the box I got and there was no name just an addy. Hmm so many bloggers living in Ontario, who could it be?
I originally was going to wait to open this but I am like a kid and can’t wait. So as soon as my mailman rang the bell this little box was opened asap. I took everything out  of the box.
I love the card. Sadly the picture doesn’t do it justice but its all glittery. Its now hanging on the wall in the front hall way.
Hmm what can be in this?

I just have to say that this is the cutest mug ever. I LOVE it and have been using it since I got it. My Secret Santa knew I loved owls.
She graciously sent me this beautiful note paper and journal which will be perfect to document my trip to NYC in May. I love writing little notes so having some pretty paper is always a must and you can always use pens and in this house pens always go missing.

Once again I want to thank the organizers on the facebook page for organizing the Secret Santa and to my wonderful Secret Santa for the awesome gift. I love it thank you.

The Top 5… Picture Books for the Holidays

Today I thought I would share The Top 5 Christmas books that you should read this holiday season to your children.

I have to send out a huge thank you to the librarian at my son’s school for this list. This is actually her 5 favorite books.

A moving retelling of the Christmas story as seen through the eyes of one little cat “Everything was silent. It was as if all the animals held their breath. We looked at the baby, and the baby looked at us.” A long time ago in a faraway land, a cat lived in a barn. He had to share it with the other animals: cows and goats, chickens and . . . mice! But that was all right; he was a good mouser. Then one wintry night the door flew open and in came a man and a woman to take shelter from the snow. Soon the cat heard the cry of a new baby. Visitors came to kneel before the family. In the crowded barn, every face was turned to the tiny infant. Through the eyes of one small cat, award-winning author/illustrator Michael Foreman retells the wondrous story of the first Christmas.

This is the first time I have heard of this book and it was a beautiful retelling of the Christmas story. The story is told in the point of view of the barn cat. I think kids will truly appreciate the story so they know how important animals are in this. The illustrations are very pretty.

From two extraordinary talents, a beautifully crafted picture book for the Christmas season. The three wise men, or the three kings, are familiar figures in the Christmas tradition. Newbery medalist Linda Sue Park has taken the brief biblical references to the three as the starting point for a new story. In it we meet a boy who is learning his father’s trade; a man who gathers resin from certain trees; a merchant in the marketplace; and three strangers in brightly colored robes who are shopping for a gift for a baby. Illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline with exquisite paintings, this simple, moving tale of ordinary people involved in an extraordinary event brings new resonance to the well-known gift list of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Includes an author’s note.

This is another new book for me but one I happy that the librarian shared with me. The illustrations are beautiful. At one point they looked like real pictures. The story begins with a boy going out with his father who collects and sells resin myrrh (which is referred to as tears) for a living. If you remember the myrrh is the third gift given. So this story is about that third gift.

A kindhearted king plays a bigger role in the Nativity than he realizes in this ode to unsung heroes everywhere. Once upon a time, three kings came out of a distant land and followed a star across the desert. You may know them as the Wise Men, or perhaps the magi-bearers of gold, frankincense, and myrrh for a newborn child. What few know is that another king set out on the long and difficult journey, a king named Mazzel who, unlike the well-sung trio, arrived too late and empty-handed. First there was the frightened nomad girl who needed rescuing from a sandstorm, then the lost merchant caravan in need of a guide, and more crises along the route. What was Mazzel to do? Based on the short story “The Other Wise Man” by Henry Van Dyke, this enchanting fable from artist Ted Sieger is a heartening, universal tale that reminds us all of the meaning of Christmas.

I think this had to be one of our favorites out of the five books.

Wombat loves everything about Christmas, but he especially loves the Nativity play. He’s wanted to be in it for as long as he can remember. At last, he’s old enough to try out. But at the auditions, the first part goes to someone else. So does the next. And the next…. Will there be a part left for Wombat? Sure to find a place alongside the most beloved classics of the holiday season, this tender Christmas story will have readers applauding for Wombat from the moment they meet him.

This is such a cute story that I am sure kids will love. I feel in love with Wombat and was so happy that even though he was to big or to small from some parts he got the best one of all.

A hilarious cast of distinctively Canadian characters populate these Twelve Days of Christmas! Christmas, as only Canadians can celebrate! Where else do Mounties frolic, squirrels enjoy a fine game of curling, and hockey players mark the season as lords-a-leaping? This hilarious, tongue-in-cheek re-setting of the popular Christmas carol is the perfect gift for Canadians new and old, young and young-at-heart.

I saw this book last year in the school library and instantly feel in love with it. This is one of my favorite Christmas books. This is the Canadian spin on the 12 Days of Christmas. Gotta love that. Its filled with all kinds of Canadian magic and all things Canadian such as the mounties, the Stanley cup, the Toronto Maple Leafs (even though I am not a fan) and so many more. This one is on my definite list of books you should purchase.

What are some of your favorite picture books to read this holiday season?

Happy Birthday to Me

I don’t think I have ever done a birthday post on my blog and not sure why. But anyways, its Happy Birthday to me today.

This birthday is super special and no I’m not pregnant or turning 50 (although I will be there soon enough) because I will tell you in a bit why its special.

Any ideas why its so special? The hint is in the above photo. Any ideas yet?

I have been given the go a head and I will be going to New York City in May 2013. I was surprised with this cute little Statue of Liberty card and coin purse of various New York City landmarks.

When I had mentioned it earlier in the fall, the answer was no because my mother-in-law wants us to go to Hungary (Budapest) in the summer of 2013 (she wants us to go over before its too late, health wise) and we have been scoping out flights and man its expensive to fly to Hungary with two adults and one child. Thankfully we just have to pay for our plane tickets and a rental car since we would be staying at my mother-in-laws house. So I left it at that until we got to talking about it again and I was asked how much would it cost to go again and was told well we will see how the budget works out.

This will probably be my last time going to NYC and BEA since we are planning a disney trip and perhaps a southern state trip in 2015/2016.

I am super excited to be going again and I have to say I think I like that it will be towards the end of the week instead of in the middle so that I can get more sight seeing in.

Do you have plans on going again in May? I know its early but its nice to ask just the same.

Virtual Advent Tour

I am so happy to be able to take part once again in the Virtual Advent Tour. Be sure to check out the  Virtual Advent Tour Blog to see daily posts and the stops on the tour.
(I have to apologize for this going up late but for some reason this didn’t post on the original date the 4th and I have been busy)

I was trying to figure out what I could share with you guys and I thought I would talk about one of our favorite traditions to do each and every year and that is opening Advent calendars. What better way to countdown till Christmas. Plus its nice to get a little goodies each day.

This year we have added to our Advent calendar pile. Every year Michael gets

He has been doing this advent calendar for a few years now and he loves this. What kid wouldn’t love being able to open this and have a new Lego piece every day? Granted the cover leaves nothing to the imagination once you get older because you realize everything they are showing on the picture is something you will get to open throughout the month.

This year this is new to me and I only heard about it last year and missed out on it completely. So this year my plan was to stalk David’s Tea on facebook and as soon as they announced this I was going to run and buy it and that is exactly what I did. Its David’s Tea 24 Days of Tea. How neat is this idea? Every day you get to sample a new kind of tea. I love this idea and its a great way to sample a tea you might not normally try.

This is definitely something I would make sure to have again next year. I am enjoying the selection so far.

Growing up we always had a chocolate calendar but for some reason after having Michael and doing the chocolate one with him we discovered that we no longer liked that chocolate it tasted different. So we were looking for something that had the chocolate and we discovered Lindt’s Advent calendar and we love our Lindt chocolate so this has become another yearly tradition.

Do you count down with Christmas with something special?

I want to thank both Kailana and Marg for doing this once again and for allowing me to take part once again. Be sure to check out their blogs and the Advent Tour to see where the next stop is.

Now, two very different kinds of infected walk the Earth, intent on nothing but feeding and destroying what little remains of civilization. When the inoculated are bitten, infection means watching on in silent horror as self-control disappears and the idea of feasting on loved ones becomes increasingly hard to ignore. Starving and forced to live inside of the abandoned high school, all Savannah wants is the chance to fight back. When a strange boy arrives with a plan to set everything right, she gets her chance. Meeting Cole changes everything. Mere survival will never be enough.

Countdown to Christmas Day 1 Off to a good start

Today officially starts the countdown to Christmas. Are you ready?

We started the day with the opening of our advent calendars. Its also so much fun because you never know what you are going to get inside them.

For the past several years Michael gets his favorite Advent calendar every year.

His Advent calendar in case you didn’t know is the Lego City. He loves being able to open a new door each day to find out what hidden treasure is inside. Today’s toy is this little mini figure.

This year I added something new to my Advent calendar along with my Lindt Advent calendar. Its the David’s tea 24 days of tea. I missed out on this last yeat so when I heard they were out I quickly ran to my local David’s tea to pick it up.

Just like the chocolates every day you get to sample a different kind of tea and I believe in each of the tin cups there is enough for at least 3-4 cups. (I could be mistaken but there is quite a bit in the tin.)

When you open the box you literally have no idea what kind of tea you will open. When I pulled the tab all I could see is that it was a black tea. Hmm I was intrigued so I couldn’t wait to pop it out. As you can tell I have Organic Buttered Rum.

This is one I have never tried before so I was excited. I love the smell of it. Below is the description I got from http://www.davidstea.com .

Yo ho ho-conut Hot buttered rum is so delicious we want it all day long. Unfortunately, most employers frown on workplace drunkenness, so we came up with this rich and creamy alternative. Toasted coconut and vanilla beans mingle with black tea in a caramelized caress of flavours. Decadent hot or iced, it also blends perfectly with dark rum, brown sugar and a dash of milk – so go ahead and indulge your inner pirate, off the clock. (MK Kosher)

I really enjoyed this tea and the flavor of it. Normally I don’t drink alot of herbal teas because I have to have my milk and sugar in it so its nice to step outside my comfort zone and try something different. The only thing I did when I made it was I put a little bit of sugar in it and one ice cube to cool it down a bit.

I recieved this glass cup from a friend and I am so happy that I am able to use it finally. I love that there is a little strainer on the cup to hold back the leaves so you can enjoy it. I am thrilled that there is enough tea to have a second or third cup after the holidays.

I also love that you can do other things with this tea like they said above in the description. I will definetly try the brown sugar with some milk.

Now its time to share with you the mocktail I made tonight. You might remember yesterday I told you about a lady I know from a Facebook group I am a part of had written this book Mocktails & More.

When I heard about it I quickly bought an ecopy of it and I spent quite a bit of time going through it trying to figure out what I was going to make first.

I was thinking do I just follow the recipes in order or should I “mix it” up? I figured that I would “mix it up” only because I told Julie that I was going to do this as a countdown to Christmas. So as a surprise to her she won’t know what mocktail I am going to make until the day.

There are so many great recipes to choose from so I went with the ones I actually had the stuff in the house for because I don’t do groceries until Monday and I planned the week out and will buy the items I need for those then.

So today’s mocktail is Eggnog. It was super easy and I had all the ingredients on hand. The only thing I did was cut the recipe in half because no one here likes eggnog and I wasn’t sure if it would keep in the fridge for long.

Empties of November

I have decided to do something new  here on the blog and that is sharing with you the products I have used up through out the month. As you know I get tons a beauty boxes and samples through out the month and I need to become accountable for that and not just put them away.

So I have to apologize for the crappy photos. For some reason I thought they were clearer. Something I need to work on for next month.

This month we went through two bottles of bath & Body Works hand soaps. The first one is sweet pumpkin and the other is hot apple cider foam soap. We loved them both but I think my favorite is the hot apple cider. I still have a few more bottles in the cupboard.

This hot chocolate mask was a mess. If you happen to pick one up to use its really good but don’t use a white face cloth like I did. This will stain it even after washing in cold water. I liked this mask because it felt like it really cleaned my face and it left a nice soft smooth face. This might be something I would re-purchase after using up what I have now.

I also used up some of my fortune cookie items and they both were bath bombs I got in October Cram Your Face in my Sweet Pumpkin Pie and Cram Your Face in my Sweet Pumpkin Pie the pumpkin shaped one. I loved both of these items and this would be something I would repurchase.

Also used up were some items I got in the October Natural Beauty Box was Happy Pumpkin Exfoliating Mini Sugar Pumpkin Soap and Burst Organic Beauty Bar Love Bubbles Body Wash. I loved the smell of the pumpkin exfoliating soap it smelled like the spices you use for making pumpkin pie. I loved that one said was for exfoliating and the other side was smooth. I have to admit it took me a few times to get use to using it but after I did I loved it and I ended up using it every other day.

Burst Organic Beauty Bar Love Bubbles Body Wash was used on the days I didn’t use the exfoliating and I loved the smell (coconut & vanilla) and it lathered really well on my sponge. It was the perfect item for the cool fall November days.

I also used up another item I got in a sample and it was from Sampler Village and it was lotion from a Canadian Company called Me and the Boy. I loved this for the smell (cotton candy and citrus) and for the texture (it was like a whip cream) and it went on nice and not cakey or greasy. This was the perfect summer reminder scent. I managed to get three uses out of it.

Speaking of summer scents on one particularly cold November night I decided I wanted to soak in a hot tub and use something that was summer or fallish and I remembered the Yves Rocher Apple Delight bath fuzz so I popped that in and wow it was like being in a apple orchid. I loved that for awhile afterwards you could still smell this even when the water was long gone.

I also managed to use up an Algemarin foam bath (after getting one in a previous sample box I had to find this and I managed to find a pack at the dollar store so I picked up one) and at Walmart I found this stress away and it was perfect to unwind after a stressful day. These are all items that i would repurchase when I run out of what I currently have.

Many years ago I slipped at work and banged up my knee pretty bad and many years later I still suffer from aches and pains in the knee and I finally found something that works amazingly and its Aleve. I am so happy that they finally came to Canada.

One of the candles I got from Bath & Body Works was finally used and its Sweet Pumpkin. I love the way it burned (nice and smooth) and the scent it gave off. It was very much like pumpkin pie very warm and enticing. Although I have to say that one morning I forgot I was burning it and was like hmm I smell pumpkin pie I wonder where its coming from.

I had cleaned out a make up bag I took to NYC in June and stumbled upon this small Colgate Total toothpaste and figured I should use that up before it expired. I love going to the dentist because he always gives me these samples and I am finally making it a point to use them up. Thankfully I didn’t have to throw any away yet.  I love this tooth paste and its one I have repurchased and use.

I also got a sample of this Downy Unstoppable in the mail and i wish I could remember the scent but I can’t. Sadly this is something I wouldn’t repurchase because I discovered I am allergic to it. It had a nice scent.
I noticed this month I wore alot of nail polish (I think it was to distract from my pale white hands) so I wanted to finish up my cutex bottle (this has been open for about a year now and it was a small bottle) this would be something I would repurchase because you always need a nail polish remover.

I also made it a point to use up these little pouches of the wipes. When I got Julep in the past they sent out little wipes and I found out. It was an okay wipe it did remove the polish. Since its part of a subscription service I won’t be getting any more.

Another item that was from a beauty box was the LA Fresh ones. I liked the scent and it removed the polish since discovering you can only order online this won’t be something I would purchase.

The other wipes are from Walmart and I found them in the travel section (where you get mini’s of products) and I really like them and this would be something I would repurchase again. The wipes are soaked in solution and the polish comes over very well and in most cases with just one wipe of the nail.
This summer when we went to Lake George I made it a point to not travel with full size items so I found this Herbal Essence shampoo and conditioner sample in my cupboard and figured I would use them up will months later I still had some left so I used them up. Not my favorite shampoo and conditioner because of my hair.

I was thrilled when I spotted this can of Frizz Ease John Frieda hair spray in the US that I had to pick it up. I love the John Frieda line for Frizzy hair. This is now my go to items in shampoo and conditioner as well as hair spray.

Another sample I really loved was the Fekkai I got in a beauty box recently. I managed to get two uses out of the shampoo and conditioner. I loved the scent and the way it made my hair feel. Upon checking them out online I saw they had a line for frizzy hair so I will be purchasing that very soon in the next few weeks when I finish up what I currently am using.

Another sample I got to use up was the Olay wipe and I like it. Not sure if it will be something I would repurchase only because there is so much out there but it was nice to try something different.

Sadly I had to throw away this Quo eye primer because it smelled weird. I don’t think I was more then half way through it so that was a disappointment considering what I paid for it.

Alot of the times I have to admit that I get lazy in removing my make up at night and instead of cleaning properly I use the make up remover wipes and I have to say that I am loving the Simple wipes and this was a pack I had from the summer that used up. I also tried out the Equate ones which weren’t my favorite as I found them to dry out really fast. I also made it a point to use up the sample ones I got and both are from a beauty box. LA Fresh I didn’t like at all and I think it was the lavendar scent that did it and the other was a bamboo one (which I can’t remember). I think for now I will stay with Simple unless I hear of some good recommendations. Do you have a favorite?
Don’t ask me why I picked this up because honestly I don’t know. I saw these at Walmart and was like wow eye brow shapers and its quick and easy. This would be perfect in between waxings on my brows. Well I took one out and would you believe that is just a piece of freaking tape that did nothing to remove hair  around my brow? I followed the instructions and in all honesty its just tape so sadly this went into the garbage and it will never be bought again.

So this is what I used this month. Not to bad eh? What about you? Did you get through your products this month?
