Author(s) Meet Up and Books Bought

If you remember my post from yesterday saying that there was going to be an author event happening near me and that I was pretty sure I was going to go, well I did make it to the 2pm reading and signing.

Quite a few people turned up and I think there was more adults(6-7)then kids(3)who came to listen to Sheree read from her book Mabel Murple. I believe it originally came out in 1995. Then when Sheree was informed that the then publisher of the books would no longer be printing children books she got the rights back to her books and went shopping around for a new publisher. Thankfully Nimbus Publishing from the East Coast (Halifax) picked her up.

Mabel Murple got a new make over from the original book and I have to say that I really love this new version of the book so much better. The illustrations are perfect and suit the book to a tee. Of course I have to say that the man behind the illustrations is Sydney Smith (no relation to me) and he is a fellow East Coaster still living in Halifax.

Listening to Sheree read her book was so much fun she did it like a sing song way. The story was very catchy. I think this will be a new found favorite in our house. I know I have read it several times since I have been home.

(I found this video on Youtube and I thought I would share it with you.)Aren’t the illustrations awesome?

After the reading she signed everyone’s books. I picked up Mabel Murple and Sleeping Dragons All Around and got them signed to Michael. Michael wasn’t able to come with me because he was about two streets over at his curling lesson.

I want to thank Sheree for coming to Babar to do a reading and signing. I truly loved discovering a new author especially one from my original neck of the woods. I just wish I could have been there for here teen reading of Pluto’s Ghost at 3pm.

Thanks Sheree for graciously posing for this photo with me.

I am really looking forward to reading The Gravesavers and Pluto’s Ghost. I am currently reading them right now (yes both at the same time) and hopefully will have both of those reviews up this week. Also check back this week for my reviews of the two children books.

April Friends of The Library Booksale/Books Bought #39

As a booklover I love going to booksales especially ones that are Friends of the Library. With the Friends of the Library 100% of the sales from the donated or old library books that are sold goes back into the library. Funds raised at this year’s event will go towards developing a new Discovery Centre for young people at the Library.

Recently Linda from Better With Books brought this booksale to our attention. The library is the Dorval Library. Which is roughly a 10 minute car ride from my house.

This is the first time I have attended this booksale but it won’t be my last. I was really impressed with the selection of books and honestly going the first day with the first few hours was well worth it. The selection was great. It was nice to see that so many books were donated.

I met up with Tina Bookshipper and Linda Better With Books on Thursday, day one of the booksale. Both Tina and Linda were there before me and when I met up with them they both had a good amount of books. Off I went to look.

I got:
-two videos:
Free Willy 1-2-3 and Muppets Take
Manhatten.(I couldn’t pass up on this one)
-11 Mangas:
Hack-The legend of Twilight vol 1-2/Planet Ladder vol 1-2-3/ Culdcept vol 1-2-3-4/Faeries Landing vol 1/fushigi yugi: the mysterious play vol 1
-9 books:
-All American Girl by Meg Cabot
-Hex marks the spot & no rest for the wiccan by
Madelyn Alt
-Shakespeare’s Counselor & Dead over heels by Charlaine Harris
-Sex in the City & 4 Blondes by Candace bushnell
-Summer Boys by Hailey
Abbott
-Heartbreak and Triumph by Shawn Michaels

All that for $13 CAN

Okay I have to admit that I went back again today to see if there was anything good. This is what I saw when I pulled into the parking lot. I guess the ducks wanted to see what was there too.

I managed to find;
– 3 cds: Savage Garden’s Affirmation, Five For
Fighting’s The Battle of Everything and Backstreet Boys’s Backstreet’s
Back.
-3 softcovers: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, Impulse by
Ellen Hopkins and Little White Lies by Gemma Townley
-6 kids books for
Michael and its Captain Underpants 1-5. (I have been eyeing these in the stores
for awhile and was thinking of getting them for him) and The adventures of super
diaper baby. (its a graphic novel) All that came up to $9 CAN.

It wasn’t raining when I came out so I decided to walk around and snap some pictures.

They were taken on the ground of the library.

Author(s) Meet Up and Books Bought #38

When I got asked to review Spin earlier in January (2010) I was really excited because I found out that Catherine McKenzie was a local author. I love supporting local authors.

Shortly into January I got an email saying that Catherine was going to be doing a book signing at Chapters/Indigo down town. I was super excited and ready to go, but unfortunately I was still sick and didn’t want to chance going down in fear I would cough to death or make others around me sick so I stayed home. I was disappointed.

Then in March I got another note saying that Catherine was going to be doing another signing at the Chapters near me in April. I quickly marked it down and pre warned everyone in advance that I was going to get my copy signed.

Donna from BooksBound came with me and she took the picture of Catherine and me.

It was really nice as we got to speak to Catherine and she is working on her second book which is going to be coming out in January 2011. Can’t wait to read it. I also got to meet her mother who stopped by as well. Catherine is just as sweet and nice in person as she is via twitter @CEMcKenzie1 and emails.

Another local author, Laura Fabiani was there to show Catherine support. I read her book Daughter of Mine in January, 2009. I got to meet Laura when she delivered her book for me to read.

I knew that Laura was coming so I was on the look out for her. We finally got to meet up and talked. Laura also is working on her next book which will be a trilogy dealing with time travel I believe. Another upcoming book to look forward to.

Laura is another one of those authors that its always a pleasure to speak with via emails and she is just as nice in person. I have to thank Catherine for taking this picture of Laura and I.

BOOKS BOUGHT:
Of course no trip to Chapters can be complete without buying books. I did buy a few books, four in total but ended up returning three of them on Monday. I kept The Reckoning by Kelley Armstrong. As that was the one I had intended to buy before walking into the store.

Please note that this could lead to excessive books on your To Buy or Wishlists.
Here is what I got this week:
Through Thick & Thin (London Confidential)Through Thick & Thin Book 2 in the London Chronicles by Sandra Bryd.

I read and my review for book 1 Asking for Trouble will be posted next week as part of the First Wild Card Tour. I really enjoyed reading the first book and curious to find out what happens next.

The Sesond book I bought was:
I bought The Other Family by Joanna Trollope because she is coming to town at the end of the month and I am going to go to the book signing. I have never read anything by her so I am anxious to read it. You can check back after April 30th to hear about the author event, photos and a possible video.

Books Bought # 36

Books Bought is a weekly meme that I am hosting. This is where I highlight the books I bought on weekly bases. If you want to take part all you have to do is grab the above banner and make your post on your blog and leave me a comment so that I can check out what you bought.

Please note Books Bought can lead to a tumbling TBR pile or a list of TB books.

Just a note to say that you can do this meme whenever you buy books.

This is what I got this week:

This is for Michael and he got it from his Scholastic order from school Geronimo Stilton Qui A Vole Le Diamant Geant?

For me:

Dirty Little SecretsBallad: A Gathering of FaerieThe Dead-Tossed Waves (Forest of Hands and Teeth, Book 2)

Books Bought # 35

As you can see I have another Books Bought post. I wasn’t planning on buying anything more since my last Books Bought post but I had to go in and pick up a gift card for a present and Michael needed:

Geronimo Stilton Attack of the Bandit Cats book 8
Geronimo Stilton A Fabumouse Vacation for Geronimo book 9

Then as I was walking past the Children’s/YA bargain books I spotted this:

I figured this would be a great book to leave in my car for times when I need something to read while waiting for Michael at school and it was a steal at $3.99 minus 10% for being an iRewards member.

I then spotted Twilight The Graphic Novel Volume 1 on my way to the cash. I love the cover. I have never read any of the Twilight series despite the fact that I do own the first book in the series.

I have actually started to read this and the I really like the art done by Young Kim.

Not pictured in this is a book I bought at the second hand bookstore for Michael and its Geronimo Stilton Book # 25 The Search For Sucken Treasure. We are slowly starting to build up his collection.

So this is what I bought this week, did you buy anything?

Books Bought # 34

I have to start off by saying “Darn Chapters for having a sale on last week!” Last week all children’s and YA books were all 20% off and then if you had the iReward card you got another 10% off. That is 30% off on a book. Who could pass up on a deal like that?

Then for any other books if you bought 3 or more you got 20% off with your iRewards card. Another good deal. So yea I have to admit I went a little crazy with book buying these past two weeks. In total I save myself $45.

Here are the goodies that I bought:

For Michael:
Geronimo Stilton Graphic Novels
-#1 The Discovery of America (this is the one he bought)
-#2 The Secret of The Sphinx (this and the following are bday presents for him)
-#3 The Coliseum Con

Geronimo Stilton Chapter Books:
-#10 All Because of a Cup of Coffee
-#11 It’s Halloween, You ‘Fraidy Mouse!

For me:
-The polka dot book is a journal
-The one beside it is another journal (I love this one the cover is so nice. Picture doesn’t do it justice.)
-This is Not a Book by Keri Smith
-How to be an Explorer of The World by Keri Smith
-The Heavenstone Secrets by V.C Andrews (This is a new series)
-Sophomore Switch by Abby McDonald
-Secret Whispers Book 2 in the series by V.C Andrews
-Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess

-Emily the Strange The Lost Days book 1 by Rob Reger & Jessica Gruner
-Dream Girl by Lauren Mechling

I almost forgot about this one: Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith

While I was cleaning up I found two books that I got for Valentine’s Day. They were: (sorry I have no photo
