New Year Meet Up

Its hard to believe that it was roughly a month ago when we had our local meet up. How fast the time flies.

We met up at our regular little tea shop and we commented on how busy the little tea shop was getting lately. Good for them. Although I keep saying it but I really need to try something new the next time I go. I love my hot apple drink and hot chocolate and their cheesecake and carrot cake are to die for but I feel as though I always get the same thing so I really think the next time I will try something else.

Sadly Avis was unable to attend this meet up because she wasn’t feeling well. Avis we missed you but get better soon. Donna, Linda (which by the way Linda has a new blog), and Tina and myself were all there. Sadly I missed a little friend who was waiting to meet me and I had just missed her. Linda’s sister I am so sorry I missed you but I am sure one day very soon we will meet up.

I always find that time flies when we meet up and everything you want to talk about never seems to happen. We all talked about books we got, the email requests from authors and publishers, books we are waiting to come, guys, jobs, life, New York, registering for BEA and BEA.

Of course another great thing about meeting up is passing on the books we read and want to read. I was able to pass along two books and a few magazines to Tina and five books and a bunch of Reader’s Digest to Linda. Donna has resisted the urge to take books so that she can catch up. Gee I wish I had her will power. I was able to clear away 7 books from my shelf but brought back four.

Here is what I brought home with me:
-Malice by Chris Wooding (I absolutely love the cover for this book.)
-Before I fall by Lauren Oliver (This comes out in March 2010)
-The Lonely Hearts Club by Elizabeth Eulberg (This comes out this month)
-Scarlett Fever by Maureen Johnson (This comes out in February)

Linda gave us each a bookmark and I got a really beautiful card from Linda’s sister thanking me for the books I was giving her. I hope you enjoy them.

Looking forward to our meet up in February.

Have you read any of these books? If so let me know.

The December Meet Up

As you might have noticed the local book bloggers didn’t have a meet up in November. So much happened and we had to reschedule. I think we all wanted to meet up before the Christmas holidays when we knew it would be tough to get together.

Sadly this time Donna was unable to attend because she had other plans that couldn’t be broken. So it was just Avis, Linda, Tina and myself in attendance at our favorite little tea shop.

I was really late in getting to the tea shop due to a heavy amount of traffic getting on the bridge and into Verdun. I was 45 minutes in traffic. This is normally a 20 minute drive from door to door. When I finally got into Verdun to see what the delay was, I was thinking for sure it had to be an accident but it wasn’t the Police had closed the straigh traffic through so you had to loop around. I have no idea why they did that but anways.

Then when I finally got to the tea shop I found the best parking spot right in front of the shop but of course the car in front of me just had to go there so I ended up finding parking across the street. Of course we all know what happens when I get out of the car, right? Yea you guessed it the car that stole my spot was now gone. AGH!!!

Needless to say I was a little frazzled when I got in. The ladies were kind enough to let me rant and rave (not that they had the choice LOL) so I ordered my hot apple cider to drink. It tasted so good.

We talked about books, our blogs, the holidays, Linda’s exams, school, jobs, life and of course NYC.

Thanks to Tina and Avis because also at this meet up we celebrated Linda’s and my birthdays and Tina bought our cakes (with candles and all- should have taken a picture and no there was no happy birthday songs) and Avis bought a round of our hot drinks. Thank you so much you guys. It was a nice way to spend a birthday.

You won’t believe this but I only came home with one book and that book was for Michael. He got from Tina A Royal Little Pest Mine by Anita Reynolds MacArthur and Illustrated by Karen Roy.

Looking forward to our next meet up in January.

Evening Out…

For the past month I have been super excited for last night (Oct 8th). Kelley Armstrong the author of two YA books THE SUMMONING & THE AWAKENING, and several adult novels was coming to my local Chapters bookstore for a reading, Q&A and signing.

Last month I won BITTEN from Random House Canada via TWITTER and I was excited and then really excited when I heard that Kelley was coming to town.

I mentioned this to both Donna and Linda. To my surprise they both wanted to go with me. So we planned this as an evening out.

When Donna and I first walked in we saw a section with chairs so I went to grab us three seats. Donna went off to pick up a few of Kelley’s books to get signed and I was looking around and what did I spot?

Yes the seats were next to the calendar display. I had to snap that picture. Is that a sign or not?

Just before Kelley came out I looked around to see there was quite the crowd behind us. I am sure Kelley was pleasantly surprised and it ranged from the young to the old.

This is Kelley and she is just about to read from her brand new book Frostbitten. She was telling the audience that the title Frostbitten was submitted by her as a joke and they accepted the title for it.

Donna got to ask a question and she got this tshirt. Kelley was telling everyone before the Q&A that she bribes the audience to ask questions and if you are picked you get some goodies ie tshirts, bags and USB drives with a bunch of goodies on it.

After that was book signing time. I got my two books signed THE SUMMONING & THE AWAKENING. Kelley noticed that I had a bunch of post-its attached to the side of the book and was asking if those were all the pages with errors on them and I laughed and said no they are parts of the book that I enjoyed and wanted to mark them so I knew where they were when I wrote my reviews.

The book marks she was giving away were really nice. Thanks Kelley for the bookmarks.

Kelley graciously posed for tons of pictures with her fans.

You can’t see in the picture above but this was when Donna was getting her books signed. You can check Linda’s blog this weekend for her review of the event and her pictures. I think Donna is going to be doing a write up too.

Another highlight of the evening was meeting another local blogger. Earlier in the day I spoke with Lucy-Enchanted by Josephine on twitter and she mentioned that she would be in the area and might stop by.

I kept an eye out for her that evening. Just as we were about to leave Lucy walks in and we got to chat with her briefly. She is truly a delight to speak with and looking forward to getting the chance to meet up with her again and to talk a little longer. Perhaps she will come to a local meet up one day.

In the above picture (L-R) Me, Lucy and Linda.

That was our evening out and I think the next time we go to another author signing for Donna and I will be in two weeks when we go to our local library to see Claire Holden Rothman talk about her book THE HEART SPECIALIST and then the following week we will be going to see Bill Haugland talk about his book MOBILE 9.

Then in November, Scott Westerfeld, Cassandra Clare and Holly Black will be coming to our local chapters and all three of us have agreed that we will be attending this one. I already have UGLIES (Scott’s book), CITY OF BONES BK 1 & CITY OF ASHES BK2 of The Mortal Instruments in my hands to read before then and hoping to be able to get those signed.

I just wanted to point out because it was brought to my attention that Donna is mentioned but not shown in any pictures. The reason that Donna isn’t in the pictures is because she doesn’t like to have it taken. I respect her decision and thats why there is no pictures of her.

September Local Book Blogger Meet Up

This past Sunday was another local book blogger meet up. Of course it was another great meet up. The time just flies when we all start talking about anything and everything.

I think that this was one of our longer meet ups.

The bloggers that were in attendance were: Donna, Avis, Linda and Tina

You can read more about what happened at Linda’s blog. I loved her quote of “what happens in the teashop, stays in the teashop.”

Some of the things we spoke up was the upcoming book sale at McGill University (I don’t think that I will be able to go although I am not sure.), the upcoming book sale in Quebec City (Avis will be attending this), of course we spoke of BEA and some other stuff.

I love meeting up with everyone because not only do we all read different genres of books but we share so much in common.

Our next meet up in October will mark the one year anniversary of us meeting up so I am sure we will do something to celebrate that. You will have to check back in October to see how we celebrated our One Year Anniversary.

This month also marked a celebration and that was Tina’s (29th LOL) Birthday on Thursday (this week). Last week we were in secret planning mode and Tina had no idea that we had a surprise for her. She was surprised that we remembered and even more surprised when she didn’t have to pay her bill. We all chipped in and that was our gift to her.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU TINA…
Okay enough of the talk here is the books I brought home this time from our meet up:

From Linda I managed to snag a copy of
The Calling by David Mack and The Tear Collector by Patrick Jones. (You can check out what Linda thought of the books by clicking on the titles.)

Then from Tina I managed to snag the following books:
Real Real by Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus (Tina has read and reviewed this book so you can see her review by clicking on the title.)
-Not Suitable for Family Viewing by Vicki Grant
-Viola in Reel Life by Adriana Trigiani
-Summer Intern by Carrie Karasyou & Jill Kargman
-The Christmas Cookie Club by Ann Pearlman

I don’t think Tina has the reviews for the rest of the books up yet but you can check back to see what she thought later on.

Local Book Blogger Meet up

Today was the monthly meet up with some local bloggers plus two new guests. The local bloggers are: Avis, Donna and Tina. The two new guests were: Linda Ellen and Michael. We met at our usual little tea shop for some great cold and hot drinks plus some great munchies such as nuts, cheesecake and brownies.

It was really nice to meet Linda Ellen. Its nice to put a face behind the blogging. I hope we didn’t scare you too much Linda?

As usual it was really nice to sit and talk about books etc with everyone. What is great about our group is that we all have different reading preferences so its nice to hear what everyone is reading and reviewing plus its really nice to exchange some books with each other. I am always happy when I am able to pass on books I have read to others, even if they didn’t like them. 🙂

Well here is what hitched a ride to my door to make a home on my bookshelf for a short period of time I am hoping anyways.

Places I Never Meant to be by Judy Blume. This was from Avis. You can see her blog for this review.

Obama’s Blackberry by Kasper Hauser

The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron

These were from Linda Ellen.

From Tina I got:
-For Keeps by Natasha Friend (There is no picture for this one because it only comes out in April 2010)
-Almost 5’4 by Isobella Jade
-The Divorce Party by Laura Dave
-Love Lies by Adele Parks
-undiscovered gyrl by Allison Burnett (This comes out Aug 11)
-Feminista by Erica Kennedy (This comes out Sept)
-Wedding Tiers by Trisha Ashely

I think that a majority of this books are on Tina’s blog with the exception of a few of the soon to be released books.

It was another great meet up and looking forward to our September one. Avis I hope you enjoy your vacation and have a safe flight to the East Coast.

Local Book Blogger Meet up

Its that time of the month again when I got to meet up as a group with Avis, Donna and Tina at our little tea shop. The tea shop is called Chat Noir and its located in Verdun, Quebec. (Its on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Wellington Street)

Here is a picture from the outside of the tea shop: (Next time I will get a better picture of the front of the tea shop.)

Here are some pictures inside the tea shop:

(First pic-is inside the store of the front entrance)

(Second pic-is of the kitchen and cash. Those silver tins are full of tea’s)

(Third pic- this is where we sit each and every month.)

I love our meet ups because its nice to talk about books, what we got in the mail, the latest news in books (such as negative reviews and authors comments) and we even spoke about NY again.

Here is the books that made their way home with me:

From Tina I got: This Toy Story 2 VHS she picked up at a yard sale for Michael, (I have been looking for this for Michael as we are always borrowing it from the library.) Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner and this Lake Champlain bookmark from her little vacation recently.

From Donna I snagged The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler.

It was another great meet up with some great Ice Tea, Hot Apple Cider and cheesecake. See you guys in August.

Local Book Blogger Meet up

Sunday June 14th was the regular Book Blogger monthly meet up with Avis, Donna and Tina. We met at our regular little tea shop. I will have to remember to take a picture at the next meet up so you can see our little spot. Its not very big and only sits about 20 or so people but the teas, hot chocolates and other drinks are delicious.

This was one meet up where everyone was excited to go. Donna was the lucky one this year as she got to go to BEA in May so the topic of conversation was about BEA (everything about BEA), the Strand and books of course. She was kind enough to bring the catalogs she picked up at BEA so we got to look at them while she talked about BEA. Thank you Donna for graciously lending me one of your catalogs.

We are all hoping to go next year and we have decided that we need to start saving now. Watch out NYC 4 wild Montrealers are going to be hitting your city next year. Brace yourselves.
I also have to thank Donna for the little bag of goodies she got for us while she was in NYC/BEA. She was very generous and got everyone a little something. Since everyone shared and showed their goodies, I will share with you what Michael and I got.

I put everything together.

From the Strand she picked up: Strand totebag (that is one store I plan on visiting when I am in NY next year), a pen, Sticky notes (will come in handy while reviewing books) and a tshirt for Michael.

A Doodletop for Michael. (its a top that you spin and put a marker in so when you spin it the marker leaves a mark on the paper)

From BEA: a luggage tag (got the hint for next year Donna LOL) a nubs dog tag, BEA bookmark with save the dates (another hint to go to BEA LOL) a cd with assorted songs on it, a audiosample from NPR Road Trips, and some books, Star Wars the clone wars w/bookmark, Horrid Henry by Francesca Simon, Publication Services Glossary of publishing terms, Dreaming Anastasia by Joy Preble and Discover the Amazon by Lauri Berkenkamp.

Thank You so very much Donna.

As for books we exchange I have been giving Donna quite a few when I meet up with her on Fridays and I brought Avis the ones she asked for. This is what I got from Avis:

Thanks for the presents Donna and Avis thanks for the books. See you in July.
