Three Weddings & a Bar Mitzvah Review

PUB DATE: August 2009

Thank you to Audra at B&B Media group for sending me this book and to First Wild Card Tours for allowing me to be a part of the tour yesterday.

This is the fourth and final book in the 86 Bloomberg Place series by Melody Carlson.

This was my favorite quote in the book and laughed when I read it:

It’s always happy hour somewhere.

That was on page 30. Kendall had just found out her parents were going to come and help with the wedding and she was asking if her mother was drinking.

(I had to insert this picture I took when I was in Lake George this summer. So now I know its true LOL.)

Anyways, if you read her previous three books in 86 Bloomberg Place then you are familiar with the characters in the book. If this is the first time you are hearing about this series then please let me introduce you to Megan, Anna. Kendall and Lelani. They are all living at 86 Bloomberg Place in Kendall’s grandmother’s town house.

Lelani has just returned from Maui with her daughter Emma and she is excited to marry Gil and live happily ever after. We all that is impossible and there is going to be twist and turns to test the faith of these two people. Lelani is hoping to have a simple wedding but she soon realizes that is next to impossible when choosing a date, that will fit into her friends calendar because on the weekend she chooses there is a bar mitzvah, and two other weddings, to her soon to me Latin mother in law who wants this to be the wedding of the century, to Lelani reaching out to her mother and then to Lelani suddenly hearing from Emma’s father. Will Lelani have the dream wedding she is hoping for or will be it out of her control?

Megan is dating Marcus. Marcus has told Megan that he wants to go on a mission to Africa to try and help them. When he announces suddenly that he is all set to go before all the festivities, Megan begins to question her relationship with Marcus. While he is in Africa she doesn’t hear from him apart from a letter the church receives. Then the night before his sister’s wedding Marcus calls Megan to tell her he will be home for the wedding. Why didn’t Marcus write to Megan while he was in Africa?

Anna is Gil’s sister and she is helping plan and organize the wedding. Anna is acting as referee between Lelani and her mother. You can slowly see Anna coming apart. She is questioning her job and her relationship with Edmond when a new intern is brought in and flirts with Edmond. She feels as though she is loosing Edmond until he shocks her. He has a little help from one of her roommates.

Finally Kendall is pregnant and in love. While she was in Maui (previous book) she meets Killiki and falls in love with him. From my understanding in previous books I guess Kendall had an affair with a well known married man and is carrying his baby. Kendall is young, care free and doesn’t have a care in the world or responsibility until she found out she was pregnant and fell in love. Killiki surprises Kendall. Kendall’s world is about to get turned upside down when her parents come to visit and her grandmother dies. Her grandmother has a surprise that no one was really expecting. That shocks Kendall and her family.

First off if you are new to this series then I suggest you don’t read this before reading the previous three books. While I was reading it I have to admit I felt like I was missing so much of the story. I have to say that I didn’t fully enjoy the book as much as I would have liked too. None the less it was a good book. I plan on looking for the previous three books to read.

How It Ends Review

PUB DATE: August 2009

ABOUT THE BOOK:
All Hanna’s wanted since sophomore year is Seth. She’s gone out with other guys, even gained a rep for being a flirt, all the while hoping cool, guitar-playing Seth will choose her. Then she gets him — but their relationship is hurtful, stormy and critical, not at all what Hanna thinks a perfect love should be. Bewildered by Seth’s treatment of her and in need of understanding, Hanna decides to fulfill her school’s community service requirement by spending time with Helen, her terminally ill neighbor, who she’s turned to for comfort and wisdom throughout her life. But illness has changed Helen into someone Hanna hardly knows, and her home is not the refuge it once was. Feeling more alone than ever, Hanna gets drawn into an audiobook the older woman is listening to, a fierce, unsettling love story of passion, sacrifice, and devotion. Hanna’s fascinated by the idea that such all-encompassing love can truly exist, and without her even realizing it, the story begins to change her.

Until the day when the story becomes all too real…and Hanna’s world is spun off its axis by its shattering, irrevocable conclusion.

MY THOUGHTS:

Laura Wiess is a new to me author so whenever I get a book to review from someone I haven’t heard of before I get excited. I love to discover new authors.

I am not sure who sent the book to me to read and review but the book is from MTV.

I have to tell you in advance that How It Ends is a very emotional and sad story. When I read the back of the book I thought that it was a story about Hanna and everything Hanna. I admit the story begins that way but as the story progresses you begin to realize that the novel revolves more around Helen, the audio book and it’s story of Helen’s life.

The book is about Hanna and Helen who are next-door neighbors with a great bond that stands the test of time.

As Hanna is getting older and is more concerned with boys and being a popular girl then having to spend time with Helen. Helen misses the days when Hanna would come over and stay until she had to go home at night.

When Hanna was a little girl, her parents asked Helen to keep an eye on her. Helen became a surrogate grandmother to the little girl and is still called grandmother by Hanna. Hanna learned many things from Helen, such as canning, sewing, and an appreciation for the wildlife that lived in their backyards. As there was huge fields behind the houses and deers were known to go there because they were safe from the hunters.

When Hanna was growing up she asked how Helen and Lon met and Helen weaved this truly romantic story of how they met but it was a lie. When Helen begins to realize that she is getting sick she sets out to tell her story in an audio book. She feels as though Hanna must know the real story of how they met. How will Hanna react when she finds out?

Helen is slowly dying and its really sad to read. When Hanna’s school realizes that she isn’t doing her community service requirement she goes to the school to see if she can do it with Helen. So the school has agreed. Hanna goes over after school for a few hours to help out.

With the progression of Helen’s disease (she is only able to communicate with blinking her eyes) Lon is having a hard time dealing with and watching his wife die slowly. Lon’s health isn’t the best either. He feels as though he is at the end of the rope with taking care of Helen and himself. What will he do?

This is a book with a message and the message is that true love never dies. It also tackles the issue of Parkinson’s Disease.

Note that you should grab your tissues cause this one is a tear-jerker!

About the Author:

Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse Review

PUB DATE: September 9, 2009

Thank you to Paul at Source Books for sending me an ARC of Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse and also for allowing me to be part of the virtual tour of the book. Please check previous post for all the other blogs hosting this tour.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In a bustling metropolis where magic is outlawed, a six-year-old child is found inside a locked bank vault. A scrap of paper reveals his name: Bran Hambric. The child remembers nothing of his life before the vault. Only magic could have done this. But why would any mage risk breaking the law to place a child in a bank vault?

Eight years later the City of Dunce has forgotten about Bran. Even his foster parents don’t seem to know he exists. But there are those who have been watching, biding their time, waiting to strike, people who know where Bran came from and why he was sent away. And they will do anything to get Bran back, dead or alive…

Welcome to a world unlike any other where the adventure of a lifetime is just beginning.

MY THOUGHTS:

This is Kaleb Nation’s debute novel. Apparently this is the first book in a soon to be series. Which I am really excited about and looking forward to reading.

I have to say that I loved the book and that it kept me drawn into the story and never knowing what was going to happen kept it as a page turner. I have to say that I am not sure I would have picked up this book on my own without hearing about it first. Although I am really happy that I did accept the offer to read it. It was really good and I will be recommending this book to people now.

Bran’s mother Emry is trying desperately to protect her son from a group of people who want him. She puts in him the trunk of her car and prays that he will get to Dunce but she isn’t sure where he might end up or if he will end up anywhere.

Bran is only six years old. He did end up in the city of Dunce and was found that morning in a locked bank vault. Bran had no memories of who he was or where he was from. The only thing that was known was from a scrap of paper with his name written on it.

Sewey works in the bank and he is the one who found Bran.

In the city of Dunce they have a law that is called the Finders Keepers Law and basically what this law means is if you find something then you are obligated to keep it. With this law Sewey is obligated to keep Bran and Bran becomes an unwelcome member of the Wilomas family. Bran is treated more like a servent that anything else along with Rosie who is Mabel’s cousin.

The Wilomas family is quite quirky with a mother (Mabel) who is scared of catching anything and everything takes all kinds of measures to protect herself. Balder, (8 years old) her son is a spoiled kid who wants what he wants and hates it when he is told no. Balderetta, (3 years old) her daughter can never be understood when she talks but apparently the family knows what she is saying.

Also the city of Dunce has strict laws against magic: No Mages, No Gnomes, No etcetera. When Bran finally discovers that he has magic powers he’s in trouble and he knows it. What will he do about this?

When Balder and Balderetta go into their parents room to tell them that burglars are trying to break into the house Sewey doesn’t believe them and sends them back to bed. Then Sewey hears a noise and grabs his gun and tells Bran he is to help him. The next night while Bran and Sewey are sitting on the roof they are attacked by a creature. Bran manages to find out that his name is Shambles and that he is there to take Bran. During the attack Shambles mentions the name Emry Hambric. Telling Bran that’s his mothers name and she wants him to come back. Bran has no idea what he is talking about.

The next morning when he goes to put the trash out the neighbor, Mr.Swinehic comes over to tell Bran he’s cleaned up all the garbage that was on his lawn (bank papers) and found a note that he gave to Bran. This note said “Meet me at midnight in Dunce to pick up Bran. Since I cannot save him, you must do it for me; and in return….” Bran begins to realize that this same paper matches the paper he has when he came to Dunce.

Suddenly Bran begins to question his life and where he came from. He begins to discover that he isn’t a normal boy that he thinks or thought he was. What will Bran do when he finds out the whole truth?

Who are these people that are watching Bran and waiting to get him? Where did Bran come from and why did his mother send him away?

I have to admit that I normally don’t buy a finished copy of any book that I read and review on my blog that is sent to me as an ARC but this is going to be one that I will buy this week when I got on my evening out with Donna on Thursday. I am sure Michael would enjoy this one when he is older.

Has anyone else noticed that Kaleb started writing the book on 03/03/03 and that his book is being released 09/09/09? Hmmm Interesting!

The Lace Reader Tour and Review

PUB DATE: July 29,2008 (Hardcover)

Paperback Date: August 18,2009

I have to send a huge thank you to Trish and TLC Book Tours for allowing me to be on this tour.

I had this book on my TBR pile since late last summer and I never got to read it so this was a perfect time to take it down of the shelf and read it.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In the tradition of The Thirteenth Tale, Brunonia Barry’s bewitching gothic novel, The Lace Reader, is a phenomenon. Called “[a] richly imagined saga of passion, suspense, and magic” by Time Magazine, it is a haunting and remarkable tale told by an unforgettable, if strangely unreliable narrator—a woman from an enigmatic Salem family who can foretell the future in patterns of lace. The Lace Reader was a runaway New York Times bestseller—hitting the top lists in major cities across the country, from Boston to Chicago to Los Angeles—and has immediately established debut author Brunonia Barry as a major force in contemporary American fiction.

Book Description
Every gift has a price . . .
Every piece of lace has a secret . . .
My name is Towner Whitney. No, that’s not exactly true. My real first name is Sophya. Never believe me. I lie all the time. . . .

Towner Whitney, the self-confessed unreliable narrator of The Lace Reader, hails from a family of Salem women who can read the future in the patterns in lace, and who have guarded a history of secrets going back generations, but the disappearance of two women brings Towner home to Salem and the truth about the death of her twin sister to light.

The Lace Reader is a mesmerizing tale that spirals into a world of secrets, confused identities, lies, and half-truths in which the reader quickly finds it’s nearly impossible to separate fact from fiction, but as Towner Whitney points out early on in the novel, “There are no accidents.”

MY THOUGHTS:
I have to admit I didn’t know what to expect when I started to read the book. With an opening line like this:

My name is Towner Whitney. No, that’s not exactly true. My real first name is Sophya. Never believe me. I lie all the time.

It was that line that hooked me into the book. I had a hard time to put the book down and ended up devouring the book in a two day span and that was only because I read this while I was on vacation other wise I am sure I would have read it in a day.

The book takes place in Salem, Massachusetts.

The main character Towner has flown in from California when her brother calls to let her know that Aunt Eva is missing. Towner hasn’t been back to Salem for over a decade and is very reluctant to be back. Towner is staying at her Great Aunt Eva’s house. Towner begins to have visions of past happenings and she also gets visits from Eva’s ghost. At first she thinks they are real until they find her aunts body and she knows differently now.

We begin to see Towner struggling with second-guessing herself because she isn’t sure whether she is going crazy again or if she is really experiencing the events. We discover that Towner was hospitalized after having suffered from depression and hallucinations at the age of 17. Her twin sister had committed suicide just before Towner was hospitalized. She has memory gaps that were caused from the shock-therapy she’d received as part of treatment.

Even though the book is mainly told my Towner, there is also another person who tells some of the story and that is Rafferty (a police officer) and he is involved because he is investing the disappearance of Eva who has turned into a friend to Rafferty.

What really happens? How much is believable and how much is a lie?

This was a great read with a little bit of mystery and love. I love that each chapter began with The Lace Readers Guide. Another thing I enjoyed was the cliches that were said that Aunt Eva use to say, such as “He’s crazy as a loon.”, “Two bricks shy of a load.” and “Not the sharpest tool in the shed.” and many more.

This is Brunonia Barry’s debut novel.

You can see the trailer for the book and other stuff here: The Lace Reader

To Tempt The Wolf Tour and Review

PUB DATE: September 1, 2009

Thank You to Danielle at Sourcebooks for sending me To Tempt The Wolf to read, review and for allowing me to be part of the virtual tour of this book.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In this third in the series, wildlife photographer Tessa Anderson must prove her brother innocent of murder charges. But when she discovers a gorgeous naked man barely alive on her beach, she’s got a new world of troubles to deal with, not least of which is how he affects her with just a look, a touch, or a whispered word.

Hunter Greymore is a lupus garou, a grey werewolf. Hoping to keep a low profile at Tessa’s cabin on the coast, he’s drawn into her life—and into her bed. His animal instincts war with his human half, but in the end, the only thing he can do about this fascinating, adorable woman is to leave her forever —unless she becomes one of them.

MY THOUGHTS:
I didn’t realize that this was the third in the book right away and that really didn’t make a difference in the book for me. It can be read as a stand alone. I do know that I will be ordering the other two previous books.

I really enjoyed the book and I have to admit that I managed to read this in a day. The story line just grabbed be from the beginning. Mind you the cover wasn’t bad to loo at either.

This is the first time I have read anything by Terry Spears and I was not disappointed. She left me wanting more which any great book should do.

The book opens up with Tessa trying to help her brother get out of his wrongly convicted murder charge. When he is convicted she makes it her mission to find the person responsible and get her brother out of jail.

A upcoming storm puts a damper on her mission for a bit because as she is collecting wood she stumbles upon a naked man on the beach that is near her cabin in Oregon. She has no idea and neither does he. All that can seem to recall is his name, Hunter. She recues him and manages to get him back to her cabin.

Hunter has no memory of who he is or where he came from. He does remember that he is the Alpha male in a wolf pack although he can’t remember where the rest of his pack is. As a forest fire has driven the pack apart.

When he realizes he has to protect Tessa because she is being stalked and killed because she appears to know to much. To much about what though? He offers to help Tessa find the person responsible for the murder that her brother is being convicted of and to protect Tessa.

As the book progresses you see that Hunter is starting to fall in love with Tessa and wants no other wolf to claim her as his own. Hunter is a Royal and needs to find a Royal mate. Hunter isn’t the kind of wolf who turns humans into wolves no matter what. Will Hunter change his ways to protect Tessa?

There was alot of action that kept you on the edge of your seat and a little passion as well. I really suggest that when this book comes out on Sept 1 that you pick up a copy you won’t be disappointed.

Bambi’s Middle Grade Book Challenge

My fellow and local book blogger Linda Ellen at Bambi Reads is hosting a Middle Grade Book Challenge. You can click HERE for all the details and to sign up.

I have yet to see this on other blogs so I figured I would show my support and join Linda Ellen’s book challenge.

Guidelines for the Middle Grade Book Challenge
1. Anyone can join.

2. Read 12 middle grade novels (Challenge 1) or read 25 MG books (Challenge 2). You can read comics too, or listen to audio books. These can be in any language. You don’t have to make a reading list now; you may select them as you go and you’re free to make changes to your list.

3. The challenge begins September 1st, 2009 through August 31st, 2010.

4. You can join anytime between now and August 31st, 2010.

5. When you sign up with MckLinky on Bambi Reads blog, you will be redirected to another page. Type in your name, followed by the name of your blog. Then type in your blog’s URL. Please follow these instructions or your link will be removed.

I will be doing the first Challenge (12 books) to start off with. I figured reading at least one book a month would be a good start but for some reason I think I might end up in the second challenge.

I have noticed that I do have quite a few Middle Grade books that I need to read and review. Over the next week I will try and pick the books out to see how many I actually have.

Thanks Linda Ellen for hosting this challenge.

undiscovered gyrl Review

PUB DATE: August 2009

Undiscovered Gyrl by Allison Burnett was released yesterday and I was lucky enough to get this copy from Tina who has read and reviewed this book so it see her review please check out her blog.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Only on the internet can you have so many friends and be so lonely. (Is that the turth?)

Beautiful, wild, funny, and lost, Katie Kampenfelt is taking a year off before college to find her passion. Ambitious in her own way, Katie intends to do more than just smoke weed with her boyfriend, Rory, and work at the bookstore. She plans to seduce Dan, a thirty-two-year-old film professor.

Katie chronicles her adventures in an anonymous blog, telling strangers her innermost desires, shames, and thrills. But when Dan stops taking her calls, when her alcoholic father suffers a terrible fall, and when she finds herself drawn into a dangerous new relationship. Katie’s fearless narrative begins to crack, and dark pieces of her past emerge. Sexually frank, often heartbreaking, and bursting with devilish humor, Undiscovered Gyrl is an extraordinarily accomplished novel of identity, voyeurism, and deceit.

http://www.undiscoveredgyrl.com/ for more info.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Allison Burnett is a screenwriter in LA and the author of Christopher, a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award, and The House Beautiful.

MY THOUGHTS:

When I first saw the trailor for Undiscovered Gyrl, I knew I wanted to read the book. So when Tina offered it up at the meet up I couldn’t pass on the chance to get my hands on it.

The book is about a girl who is 17 years old and she goes by the name of Katie on her blog but apparently her real name is Amy. Katie blogs about her life which at times seems like your watching train wreak waiting to happen.

The whole book is done in blog forum which was really interesting. I found it to be believable and that it could be anyone writting it.

When she announces that she is taking a year off from college her mother tells her that she has to get a job. Lucky enough she stumbles up one at a use book store “Elysium”. When her mother’s boyfriend finds the deal too good to be true he decides to check the owner out and discovers he has a past with a record. Katie is forced to quit her job.

Luckily with a phone call from a guy who interviewed her for the college calls her when he sees that she has defered and is looking for someone to take care of his son for a short term with a possibility for longer. She accepts the job.

Between her drinking, smoking and drugs Katie has numerous sexual encounters with her boyfriend Rory, Dan (an older man), random guys and her boss. She was very detailed in her blog about this. With this I am not sure I would pass this book onto my niece unless I spoke to my sister first and told her about the book.

Its towards the end when its revealed what lead her life this way and its sad and you realize that it could happen to anyone and she tried to deal with it although not to the best of her ability. With and absent father and a mother who for what it appeared could care less about her she was looking for love in all the wrong places.

It was an okay read for me but not a favorite. I thought that Katie was just a little too graphic in details and wonder if it was all for attention or what. There was a few funny spots in the book that made me laugh. It did make me realize how annomymous we are online. We can be who ever we want and can say what ever we want and no one would know the difference.

My favorite quote in the book

We’re all famous in our own minds.

How true is that?

If you have read this book please let me know and I will add your link here.
