Summer House Review & Pump Up Your Promo Tour

PUB DATE: June 2009

Thank You to Dorothy at Pump Up Your Promotion for sending me this book and allowing me to be a part of the July virtual tour of it.

This is Nancy Thayer’s latest book. I just love the cover of it and if this doesn’t say summer then I don’t know what does. How I would love to be there right now.

Nancy Thayer has written several New York Times best sellers. Before signing up for this tour I have to admit that I have never heard of Nancy before and after reading Summer House I am curious at pick up some of her earlier books to read.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

At thirty, Charlotte Wheelwright remains the dreamer she’s always been. But when she begins an organic garden on a portion of her grandmother’s land, Charlotte learns to plant her feet in solid ground and begins to build a new life.

More often than not, ninety-year-old Nona Wheelwright contentedly spends her time reminiscing about days gone by. But with her family’s annual reunion and financial meeting looming, Nona must give up her days of quiet solitude to soothe her easily riled up family.

For decades Charlotte’s mother, Helen, who married into the illustrious Wheelwright family, has been pressured to adhere to their way of life. But when, during the course of the family’s annual summer retreat, she discovers her husband’s betrayal, Helen wonders if she sacrificed her dreams for the wrong reasons.

Artfully written and set on the glorious island of Nantucket, Nancy Thayer’s Summer House is a vibrant and stirring novel about family, love, and daily choices that affect entire lives.

New York Times calls it, “a Nantucket family-reunion story…well-wrought, appealing book will come as a pleasant surprise…packed with literally down-to-earth charm, what with a central character who escapes her family of starchy bankers by lovingly tending her vegetable garden.”

MY THOUGHTS:

This is my first time reading anything by Nancy Thayer and I have to say I really enjoyed reading the book. I am just wondering if this story will be continued as there was alot of open gaps that left me wondering alot of things.

While I was reading it I have to admit that Nona was my favorite. I loved reading about her memories. She seems like a great grandmother to have. It was nice reading them as it made you feel you were actually there with her.

Summer House is about three generations of Wheelwright’s. The Wheelwrights run a very well known bank in Nantucket that has been the family business for many generations.

From the outside it looks like the Wheelwrights have the perfect lives but on the inside its not what it appears.

The three main characters in the book seem to tell the story. There is Nona who is the matriarch of the Wheelwright’s and is 90 years old. She has two grown children, Grace & Worth. Grace is married and has three grown daughters. Worth is married to Helen and has three grown children as well. Their daughter Charlotte is 30 and is living with Nona.

Nona gave us a glimpse into her life from the time she was introduced into the Wheelwright family. She over heard Herb’s(her deceased husband)mother and father telling her they didn’t think she was good enough for the family when she was younger. She tried very hard to fit into this family. She always wondered when and if she would fit in.

Helen is in her 60s and is having to deal with alot of things and basically has alot on her plate. What will she do when she finds out about Worth’s secret life? Will she be able to confide in anyone? Will she be able to forgive him? She wonders when will she be a grandmother. She is very much like Nona trying to fit into the family and basically just goes with the flow.

Charlotte is Helen’s 30 year old daughter who is basically a free spirit. She is a dreamer and that is what the family sees her as. She has no real goals in her life and never sees things through. When she goes to live with Nona she feels as though she has found her calling in life and has set up an organic farm. When the family hears she made a profit they feel as though their is favorites within the family. Is that true? Will she be able to see things through and start a new life? What will Nona have to say about letting Charlotte having that little piece of land to the family? Will she be able to find happiness and be with a man, Coop or Whit?

It was nice to read Summer House because it appears as though this family has it all but when you look behind close doors they aren’t that perfect family the appear to be. Each family has their own secrets and some surprising then others.

Reading Summer House I almost felt like I was there. I love a book like that. I think one day I will have to go to Nantucket.

Two Years, No Rain Review & TLC Book Tours

PUB DATE: June 2009

I have to say Thank You to Lisa at TLC Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of the tour for Two Years, No Rain.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

An earnest journey from heartache to heartthrob and all the emotions along the way; at once an old-fashioned love story and a cautionary tale of self-reinvention.

In San Diego County, it hasn’t rained in 580 days. But for weatherman Andy Dunne, everything else is changing fast…Only a few weeks ago, he was a newly divorced, slightly overweight meteorologist for an obscure satellite radio station, hiding his secret love for a colleague, the beautiful—and very much married—Hillary Hsing. But nearly overnight, Andy has landed a new gig, flying a magic carpet in a bizarre live-action children’s TV show. So what is affable, basically decent Andy Dunne going to do now that he can do practically anything he wants? With a parade of hot moms begging for his autograph and a family that needs his help more than ever, Andy has a lot of choices. First, though, there’s this thing with Hillary, their heated text messages, a long-awaited forecast for rain – and a few other surprises he never saw coming.

MY THOUGHTS:

I have to admit I was gushing when I opened Two Years, No Rain to read for two reasons, one this book sounded really good when I heard about it and the second was that it was a signed copy. I always get excited when I discover a book that is sent is a signed copy.

Shawn is a new to me author. He wrote Jessica Z last year. After reading Two Years, No Rain I am really excited to pick you Jessica Z to read. Perhaps in the very near future a review of it will appear on this blog.

I really enjoyed reading Two Years, No Rain and right now I would be willing to send them all the rain we have been having.

Andy is a 30 something guy, newly divorced (living in a house with not furniture) and works at a satellite radio station reporting the weather. Although right now with two years of no rain and nothing in site Andy is having a hard time to report the weather Southern California.

When is love interest Hillary (they have been friends) tells him about a voice audition that is happening he is reluctant at first but with her persuasion he agrees to make a demo and go to the audition. Before Andy realizes it he is hired as the host of the children’s show. Which is perfect because at the satellite radio station there is cutbacks and he looses his job.

Andy is trying to deal with his failed marriage and his ex-wife’s affair that ended the marriage. Andy is also a family man who cares about his family as he tries to help his sister and her family because her husband is a chaplain who is in the war. He takes Hannah, his niece under his wing because Hannah and her mother are constantly fighting and everyone agrees that being able to have another place to crash whenever Hannah needs it is a good thing. He is also still grieving the loss of his twin brother.

As the book progresses we see that Andy and Hillary (who’s unfortunately married) relationship begin to form. Its all just casual flirting by text and phone calls until her husband discovers this and tells Andy to back off. Which they do but then a chance at going to Hong Kong arises, will Andy take Hillary with him? Will this relationship have a chance to blossom like the rosebush Hannah planted in her uncles yard?

I loved Andy he was just your typical guy next door that you would fall in love with. You couldn’t help but root for him throughout the book and hoped that he would come out on top in the end.

Another thing I loved about the book was “When the world ends, the readers will be spared. You and I will be spared, together, just because we cherish books.” Isn’t that a great quote?

Dead Until Dark Review

PUB DATE: Originally came out in hard cover January 2008. This version of the book came out September 2008. This is the movie tie in version.

As many of you know Beth Fish Reads is hosting the Sookie Stackhouse Reading Challenge. The challenge is to read all nine books in this series by June 30, 2010.

I saw this on twitter in June and decided that I wanted to take part in this knowing that I probably could finish this challenge without a problem. I have managed to convince my partner in crime Donna and hoping to have convinced Michael to take part in this challenge too. Its easy 9 books to read in the next year. How hard could that be right? I have bought all 8 books for now and I am hoping that by the time I get to the 9th one it will be in paperback. I am one down and 8 to go.

The books in this series are:
Dead Until Dark *COMPLETED*

Living Dead in Dallas
Club Dead
Dead to the World
Dead as a Doornail
Definitely Dead
All Together Dead
From Dead to Worse
Dead and Gone
Charlaine Harris is the author of 28 books. This is a new to me author. Dead Until Dark is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. True Blood is an original series that is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels that airs on Sunday nights on HBO.
When I first picked up Dead Until Dark to read I wasn’t sure at first and kept thinking to myself what did I just get myself into? I am not into the gory, scary stuff and I can’t watch horror movies etc because they creep me out. So I am probably sure that I couldn’t watch this on HBO.
Surprisingly enough once I started to read the book, I realized that it wasn’t going to be gory with details and ended up devouring the book in a weekend. I am so excited to read Living Dead in Dallas and I keep picking it up and wanting to read it but I am trying to limit them to a monthly read if possible.
I loved Sookie. She is a waitress in the towns only bar called Merlotte’s in a small town in Louisiana. I felt I could relate to Sookie very well as we both are fairly quiet, don’t get out a whole lot (personally I find that come 10:00 PM I want to be home in bed reading), keep to ourselves and back in the day I didn’t find or think of myself as dateable. Look at the tv version of Sookie who wouldn’t want to date her?
I have to admit that I never read the back of the books when I bought them and I wanted there it be an element of surprise when I read them, so when I came upon people calling her Crazy Sookie and her disability I was curious to find out what it was. I was surprised to find out that it wasn’t what I thought it was.
Shortly after the book begins Sookie is working one night and a tall, dark and handsome guy comes in and she discovers his name is Bill Compton. For once Sookie can’t read this guy but she does know what he is. She manages to save his life one night and from that point they are together all the time. She likes him and he likes her.
With the arrival of Bill there is suddenly quite a few murders. More then this little town has ever seen. Everyone believes he is behind them and is the prime suspect. When they realize that he isn’t behind them the finger is quickly pointed to Sookie’s brother Jason as he has been with quite of few of these murdered women. Sookie is on a mission to prove that Jason can’t be behind these murders. Is Jason really behind these murders or is he being set up to take the rap for someone else?

I want to say more things about the book but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. All I have to say is that I really enjoyed it and looking forward to starting Living Dead in Dallas in August. If you are looking for a quick and exciting read that is fast paced then let me suggest this to you.
Here are other covers of this book. Which one do you like?
For me I happen to live the above cover with the cartoon like cover mainly because all the over books I bought are done in this format.
Have you read the book? If so let me know and I can add your link to my review.
For more info on Charlaine Harris you can check out her site here.
I am applying this book to my Buy a Book Read a Book Challenge for July. Buy a Book, Read a Book is a yearly challenge that is being hosted by My Friend Amy and you can check out her blog here. For this challenge you basically are required to buy a book a month and read it that month. You are required to read 12 books in the year.

Swimsuit Review

PUB DATE: June 2009

I have to send a huge THANK YOU to Miriam at Hachette for sending me Swimsuit to read and review.

As many of you know by now I am a huge James Patterson fan. I can actually read his books in a day and this was the case for this book. It was shortly after the Quebec holiday that we had family in town and decided to go to the zoo which is about an hour out of Montreal and I made sure to pack this book into the bag and I was going to read it on the way there as well as sitting in the water park. I was lucky enough to grab a lounger and there I sat while the kids took part in the water park.

I could not put the book down so I was really disappointed on the way home when we hit a huge thunder and lightening storm with tons of rain needless to say I stayed up late that night to finish this book.

This is James Patterson’s newest book to be released. He has been writing since 1976. He has written over 50 books. Both fiction for adults and series for young adults.

I am always wondering whenever I pick up his books if I will like it? Does he still have that IT factor? The answers to those questions are YES! I LOVED IT! and YES He does still have that IT factor. I am amazed that he does still have IT after writing well over 50 books. He is writing because he wants to not because he has too. He manages to suck you in as a reader and makes it impossible to put his books down.

This is the case in Swimsuit. Swimsuit is about Kim Daniels who is a beautiful swimsuit model. She is in Hawaii on a photo shoot when she goes missing. No one knows she is missing until her parents get a late night phone call saying that she is missing. Her parents manage to get flights out to Hawaii right away so they can search for Kim. No one is really concerned at first because they think she ran off to enjoy Hawaii.

Her parents are trying to get into speak with the Police but funny enough they have odd hours. With the help of Ben Hawkins who is an ex-cop who is turned reporter for the LA Times. He offers to help the family out and tells them he can be an asset to them with the investigation.

With more bodies turning up and no witnesses or evidence everyone is scrambling to find out who this killer is and why is he killing.

The killer video tapes each of the killings because there is a price on all of these videos and an elite group who is willing to watch them. He calls them the PEEPS. They are a bunch of wealthy people who will pay big bucks for a cheap thrill that doesn’t get their hands dirty.

Will they be able to stop the killer before he kills again or will more lives end?

If you have never read Patterson before and are looking for something then I have to suggest this one. Its a stand alone book. It will suck you in from page one.

UP COMING BOOKS:
James Patterson has three upcoming books this year:

  • Alex Cross Trials set to be released in August 2009
  • I, Alex Cross set to be released in November 2009
  • Witch Wizard set to be released in December 2009

Come back at the end of August for my review of Alex Cross Trials.

The Chosen One Review

PUB DATE: May 2009

I bought this book after seeing quite a few reviews for it lately. Of course it being about polygamy, a topic I have been interested in lately sold me right away.

I bought the book at the end of June so this is being applied to the Buy a Book/Read a book for June.

Kyra is a 13 year old girl ho has lived her whole life in a polygamy compound. She has never questioned her life before now. Her father has three wives (Sarah, Claire and Victoria) and she has 10 brothers and 10 sister with two more on the way. The ages range from 8 months old to 17 years old.

Kyra is basically like your typical teenager who likes boys and likes to read. Both of which are forbidden. Kyra really likes this boy named Joshua. The sneak off to be together. If the prophet found out she would be in trouble as in all polygamy groups young girls are not suppose to be with any boy before she is married and they have no say on who they will be with. She is hoping that this will change with Joshua and that the prophet will allow them to be together.

Reading of books is forbidden and its deemed the work of the devil. Kyra spots the Ironton County Mobile Library driving by and one day the guy stops the truck when he sees Kyra. She gets into the truck, she misses reading. At one time there was books allowed until one day they were told to burn them. So Kyra allows takes a book and hides it in her dress. She has read: Harry Potter & The Sorcerers Stone, Anne of Green Gables, Little house on the Prairie and a few others.

The Prophet has come to inform Kyra’s family that Kyra will be married. She is excited because she thinks she will be marrying Joshua. Her excitement is short lived when she finds out who she is to be married too. She is upset and says she will not marry. Who would the prophet assign Kyra too? Could it be that bad that she would refuse? Will Joshua be able to help Kyra?

I enjoyed reading this but the only thing that really bothered me was the abuse and the extent it went too. Does this really happen to the women and children on compounds? As fascinated as I am in polygamy I don’t think I would make a good sister wife. Not being able to have a say and to protect my children just seems wrong. Also when young girls are being told to marry some 3 to 4 times their age is just wrong.

The Castaways Blog Tour & Review

PUB DATE: July 7, 2009

The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand is part of the July blog tour by Hachette.

Thank you to Miriam for sending this book. I am always honored to be part of the tours of books that Hachette offers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket with her husband and their three young children. She grew up in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and traveled extensively before settling on Nantucket, which has been the setting for her five previous novels. Hilderbrand is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the graduate fiction workshop at the University of Iowa.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Greg and Tess MacAvoy are one of four prominent Nantucket couples who count each other as best friends. As pillars of their close-knit community, the MacAvoys, Kapenashes, Drakes, and Wheelers are important to their friends and neighbors, and especially to each other. But just before the beginning of another idyllic summer, Greg and Tess are killed when their boat capsizes during an anniversary sail. As the warm weather approaches and the island mourns their loss, nothing can prepare the MacAvoy’s closest friends for what will be revealed.

MY THOUGHTS:

Elin Hilderbrand is a new author to me. She has written seven previous books and from the descriptions of the books they all sound like they will be fun summer reads. I have them all on my wish list of books to read.

The story takes place in Nantucket. It involves four couples. These four couples are all the best of friends that live in Nantucket all year round. The chapters are told by the eight characters involved in the book.

The characters are:
Greg & Tess-Greg is a womanizer & in a band. Tess is a mother with two kids.

Deliah & Jeffrey-Deliah is a mother of two kids and party girl. Jeffrey is a local farmer

Phoebe & Addison-Phoebe has a drug problem, loves to spend money and a trophy wife. She use to have a twin, Reed, but he died jumping from a window at the World Trade Center on September 11th. Addison is a rich real estate agent on Nantucket. He is divorce with a sixteen year old daughter.

Chief & Andrea-Eddie (The Chief) is the police chief. Andrea is Tess’s cousin and is a mother to two kids. She use to date Jeffrey.

In my opinion it appears as though Greg and Tess are the golden couple of the group. Greg and Tess have had their fair share of trouble from countless miscarriages Tess has suffered to the possibility of Greg’s infidelity that almost caused them to end their marriage.

Tess and Greg managed to over come it all and planned on celebrating their 12th anniversary together and planned to sail from their home in Nantucket to nearby Martha’s Vineyard and possibly spend the night. On the way their, their boat ends up capsized and both Greg and Tess are killed.

The rest of the group is dealing with the sudden lose of Greg and Tess and are trying to cope with their deaths. Out of the group its Addison, Andrea and Deliah who seem to be having a harder time dealing with the deaths. But why? Could it be that Addison and Deliah have secrets that no one in the group knows about?

We know Andrea would be having a difficult time handling Tess’s death because they were very close and were cousins. She at times felt like a mother to Tess. She decides that since Tess and Greg had no provisions in the will regarding the two kids she decides that since she is family she will take them. This comes to much disappointment in Deliah.

I enjoyed the book. There was tons of secrets going on within the group and it made you wonder how will it play out and would they be revealed. Looking forward to reading more by Elin.

This is the third day of the tour with two more days to go.

What’s the best you can do? Review

PUB DATE: March 2009
This is an autobiographical collection of anecdotes that Derek Rowlinson has experienced as a second hand bookseller in his store.
This was a funny and quick read. I had a hard time putting this book down once I started to read it.
Some of the stories were really funny and I found myself laughing out loud and being able to relate to them. One of the sections was “Ask a Silly Question” and Derek gets asked “Have you read all these?” I use to get asked that all the time and heaven forbid should you say no. You would then get asked why not, you work here don’t you. He also mentioned the shop lifter and that was another one I could relate to as there was this older man who would come in with an open back pack and leave with a heavier closed one. Yes he did steal and it was science fiction books he would steal. We were never able to catch him in the act but Derek the author did in his store.

I have worked in a bookstore (Coles) and I had quite a few characters that I had to deal with on a daily bases. There was one customer who would call every Tuesday to see what new releases there was this week. You had to tell him every single new book that came in that week and heaven forbid should it be a title that interest him and if it was you had to read the back of the book to him. I never got to meet this customer but he did come into the store on a monthly bases.

Another customer would insist that the bargain books we had on display were previously read books that customers returned. We would also say no they are not but they would argue each and every time. Just before I had left my job I told that customer for the last time that it was impossible because there was stacks of 5-10 books in the pile of the same title.
After reading this book I have a whole new appreciation for booksellers in second hand bookstores and in retail stores. Think twice before asking that question you might have to ask. Also please remember your manners and you don’t have to be rude and annoying to booksellers.
