Gemma stood near the dungeon entrance and watched as Russell approached a kneeling woman. When he crouched down and cupped her chin, she cursed herself for being unable to look away.

His intense stare at the bar had unnerved her and intrigued her at the same time. Something in his eyes made her want to ask a million questions and get to know him. His demeanor had changed when he found out she was married to Matthew.

That made her curse her family all over again. Yes, they were legally married. No, they were not in love or even sleeping together. In the best of times, they were friends. But most days, they were strangers who didn’t even live together anymore. They had their own lives, and that was how they liked it. If their world hadn’t exploded—literally—she might have been divorced by now, and maybe she would be the one being strapped to the cross by the gorgeous silver fox across the dungeon.

She shook her head and went to find a place to sit. There was no sign the two even liked the same things in the bedroom, and here she was fantasizing about him. Get a grip, Gemma. You’ll be back in London before you know it.

At least she hoped so. She wasn’t sure what the future looked like after the harrowing experience of barely escaping death and Matthew shoving her onto a plane against her will. And now, nobody could locate Matthew. She wanted to reach out to Kendall, but he had been adamant about her not contacting anyone for fear that the people trying to kill them might find her.

She shuddered and took one more look at Russell and the woman he was with. Just in time to see him unfurl a single tail whip. A loud crack echoed through the room and she pushed open the door and left the dungeon.

About Ivy Nelson:

Ivy Nelson is an emerging contemporary romance author, hopeful romantic, and passionate advocate, who is versed in all things steamy, sultry, and sensual. It all started back when she read her first steamy romance novel at the age of fourteen. From that point forward, it became her favorite genre—one she wanted to write in herself someday. Sylvia Day’s writing style cemented that passion, and gave her just
the inspiration she needed to be an author herself. In December of 2018, Ivy published her debut novel, Power Desired at the age of thirty-two.

Most recently, Ivy completed the “D.C. Power Games” series and the fourth book in her popular “Diamond Doms series” titled “Pressure”. In a not-so-distant past, she was a student affairs professional at a university and earned her political science degree, which explains her politically-driven romance debut.

When she isn’t penning steamy scenes or attending writing/kink/BDSM conferences, you can find this
contest-winning karaoke singer and bookworm passionately supporting human rights or growing her Sims 4 empire. She is also a wine aficionado and certified whiskey taster (no really, she has the certificate to prove it). All that aside, Ivy loves spending quality time with her amazing son and husband of three years at their home in Houston, TX.

HELL’S CURSE BY EVE NEWTON
EXCERPT:

I blink and somehow, I’m back in the middle of the warehouse. “What the fuck?” I yell, shoving my hand into my hair.

I hear the guys burst through the doors behind me. “Guess, you reached the edge of the labyrinth,” Sebastian remarks.

“Grrr,” I snarl.

“Okay, easy tiger,” he says, putting his hands up. “At least we know the perimeter and that this is the center, which means it’s small.”

“And?” I snap.

He bites his lip. I can’t help but think how sexy it makes him look. “Oh no,” I groan and turn from him. All of them. My hands are shaking, my heart is pounding, my skin has a sheen of sweat on it and my breath is coming in shallow pants. I know what I need but I can’t get it. I can’t Shift. I’m stuck in this human female form that needs what was promised to me not all that long ago with the guy who mysteriously died between my legs.

“GeeGee?” Ethan asks, coming closer.

“Stop,” I say, holding my hand up. “Don’t come any closer.”

He stops dead.

“You’re affecting her,” Sebastian murmurs. “Move away.”

“She’s immune,” Ethan mutters.

“Not anymore, not without her powers. If she can’t Shift, the anxiety of the situation is aggravating the Hellhound that is still inside her with no way for release. Am I right, little one?”

“Mm,” I moan, doubling over as pangs shoot through my body, hurting me.

Welcome to the new Updated Look

Good Morning Readers,

As you may have noticed Cindy’s Love of Books has gotten a new look. What do you think? Please let me know in the comments.

In a recent conversation, I had with my friend Michael we were talking about my blog, mainly how the book covers were not fitting properly on the home page. We tried to figure it out and in the end, we decided it needed an updated look. I think it was time because it had the same look for over seven years. As you can see I still kept my banner because I absolutely love it.

There are still a few little things we need to do behind the scenes but for the most part, it’s all done and I love my theme, North Shore. I was instantly drawn to North Shore because it pays homage to my roots and where I grew up in northern New Brunswick.

So what do you think of the new look?

I know with this new look that I will get back into blogging more which I admit that I have been in a blogging funk. Hopefully, with this new look, I will get into a regular blogging schedule with a mix of tours, book promos, reviews, etc.

ABOUT
A frail young girl flees a roaring forest fire in the middle of the night desperately taking refuge in a cave where she quickly loses consciousness. She wakes up in a strange, tiny village populated by fairy-like creatures. Her hosts seem intrigued by the sparkles of light that seem to surround her. The village chieftain explains that one of their hunters found her passed out in the forest and brought her back here for treatment. He asks who she is, but she remembers nothing except for a wall and flames. The chief is baffled by her tale as there has not been any fire in the forest lately, and yet the young woman does indeed show signs of burns. Somewhat recovered and dressed in woodland clothes made by the villagers, the young lady asks to meet the hunter who found her in the forest. She asks her savior to take her to where he found her, hoping that seeing the place will restore her memory. But Meliss refuses -- the rules of the village say that only hunters can enter the forest, and all of the sparkles surrounding the girl would catch the eyes of predators living in these woods...

This past week I attended virtually SLJ Teen Live and it was so much fun. I was able to discover a few new books such as this graphic novel and quite a few other graphic novels that I have shared so far and will share in the future.

I have to say that Brindille is fantastic. The illustrations are so pretty. This was another graphic novel that I read in one sitting. I was definitely intrigued from the very beginning when a mysterious girl is thrust from a forest fire and seeks refuge in a cave. She has no memory of who she is or what has happened to her. When she does wake up she is in a tiny village. The villagers are fairy-like creatures. This mysterious girl is always surrounded by sparkling lights.

The chief of the village is baffled by her story of how she got there because there haven’t been any forest fires but her burns and scratches say otherwise. Once she is recovered she asks to meet the hunter who found her because she is hoping he will show her where he found her in hopes of figuring things out. He refuses because the rules are only hunters can enter the forest and that it’s too dangerous especially considering she has an orb of sparkling lights around her.

When he refuses she takes it upon herself to travel into the forest. From there it’s one thing after another. Will we find out who this mysterious girl is and how she got to that village?

After reading this I hope there is a second graphic novel coming out. I will be keeping a lookout for it.

Review: Gray

Review: GrayGray by Arvind Ethan David, Diana Greenhalgh, Eugenia Koumaki, Joana LaFuente
Published by Clover Press on July 13, 2021
Pages: 124
Goodreads

A contemporary reimaging of the classic Oscar Wilde novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray," Gray is a supernatural revenge thriller about an alluring but violent woman, Dorian Gray, who seeks vengeance on a cabal of powerful men who wronged her years ago; and of the straight-laced African American detective with a past of his own, who is tasked with stopping her.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde's only novel and one of the classics of gothic literature, is the tale of the most beautiful man of his age, who sells his soul and his conscience in exchange for eternal youth, beauty and power - and who spends his life murdering, raping and corrupting. All the time in his attic, his picture degrades and rots.

GRAY takes that basic idea but flips its moral framework and gender archetypes: our DORIAN GRAY is a Millennial social media princess who drifts through the coolest cliques of NYC, breaking hearts and turning heads wherever she goes. But Dorian has secrets. For one thing, she's a violent criminal. For another, she's an immortal creature of magic, who commits violent burglaries and assaults some of New York's most powerful men.

30 years ago, whilst an innocent student, Dorian was sexually assaulted by these men. In that moment that she became something both more and less than human. 30 years later, but not a day older, she's ready for her revenge. Then Dorian meets Detective HANK WUTAN, the African-American NYPD detective assigned to stop these crimes, struggling with his own loyalties as a Black cop in the era of Defund the Police. Despite the fact that Dorian is his suspect number one, and he is effectively working for her abusers, they fall for each other, hard.

GRAY takes Wilde's classic novel and reinvents it as a tale of cathartic revenge for the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter era, a violent fantasy about how powerful, super-rich white men don't always win, how the powerless can find justice, and about how a murderous demon and a law-abiding detective can be soul mates.

Recently I have gotten into reading graphic novels as they tend to be quick and fun reads for me. I have read a vast range lately as you will gradually see in my upcoming reviews.

I picked up Gray, this graphic novel is inspired by Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray which I have to admit that I have never read but after reading this twist on it I might have to pick it up to read soon. Gray is a modern-day retelling with modern themes.

I should point out that there is numerous trigger warnings (sexual assault and systemic racism) in this graphic novel.

I was lucky enough to pick this egalley from SLJTeen Live event that I recently took part in.

This is the first graphic novel in perhaps a series. The second graphic novel will be released in the Fall. I am definitely excited to continue reading this when they become available. I might have to check to see if my library has this so I can reread it in a book format.

I have been interested in retellings lately and started to look up ones that I want to start reading. So when this one was available I decided to give it a try. I was intrigued by the cover and went in expecting it to look like that but was surprised that the illustrations were more colorful.

I really did enjoy this (read this in one sitting) and was surprised by the cliffhanger at the end. I do have to admit in the beginning I was a tad confused by the storyline and not knowing where it was going but it quickly came together. To sum it up it’s about a group of women who want revenge on a group of white older men who have done horrible things and are never brought to justice or punished for their crimes. Will they be able to get away with it or will they be the ones who have to pay for their mistakes?

Lisa is a lonely girl who enjoys wandering nature and collecting odd bonesand pebbles. The other kids think she’s kinda weird, maybe a witch, andavoid her. When one day she discovers a tree that allows passage to a parallelworld, she finds herself in the middle of a demonic invasion plot, faced withsaving the very children who ridiculed her.
In this magical tale (set inthe same world as WATERSNAKES), Tony Sandoval takes readers back to his world ofmysterious adolescence and surreal beauty. Like WATERSNAKES, and DOOMBOY beforeit, the reader is faced with recognizable feelings of solitude and longing mixedwith danger and adventure through a visual wonderland.

I stumbled upon this little gem this morning when I attended the SLJ Teen Live event.

I think what drew me in right away was the illustrations from the cover to throughout the graphic novel they were stunning in my opinion.

I definitely want to check out Tony Sandoval’s other graphic novels especially if they are anything like this one.

This was a pretty quick read that I read in one sitting.

Our main character is Lisa and she is feeling alone and lonely. Her mother has died and she is separated from her father. She lives with her godmother and son. She has no friends. She prefers to be on her own. Lisa enjoys wandering nature and collecting odd bones and pebbles. This is probably why she has no friends because they think she is weird and possibly a witch.

On one of her wanderings she comes across a unique shaped tree, curiosity gets the best of Lisa and she climbs through. She soon discovers herself in a parallel world. This is not any parallel world but one that is being invaded by demons. Without even thinking Lisa starts to rescue the kids who make fun of her.

Will Lisa be able to save everyone? Can she right the wrong before its too late?
