It’s Monday What are you reading? #12

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

The wonderful host of this weekly meme is Shelia from Book Journey. You can check out her blog to find out all the details on how to take part in this fun weekly meme. I should warn you though that this can add to an ever increasing TBR pile or wishlist.

Its slowly starting to look Spring. The snow is slowly melting but I have to admit that its still pretty cold out there. Right now as I am writing this its -4 (-11 with the windchill) and they are saying a chance of snow. AGH!

On the bright side it is the last week of March (where did the time go?) and I can’t believe how the days are just slipping by. I am anxious for summer to come because that means vacation time (and I need a vacation!). I am really looking forward to heading south again. We are once again going to be driving to Illinois to visit family.

So last week my current reads were:

I finally finished The Weird Sisters. It feels like I have been reading this one for awhile now and honestly I probably have. I am currently working on my review for it and hoping to have it up this week.

All that I have planned to read this week is this one:

Should I finish Across the Universe this week, this is the next one up:

It was a quiet reading week and I really wanted to get through The Weird Sister because I have been reading it for so long. I am hoping that Across the Universe will be a quicker reader.

Have you read any of these books? Any plans to read any of them?

Follow Friday

I have been seeing this around for a little while now and figured I would jump on board. What better way to discover new blogs and bloggers.

The host of Follow Friday is ParaJunkee. If you haven’t checked out her blog yet you really should. I love reading her reviews and blogging tips.

To find out more about Follow Friday head on over to ParaJunkee‘s blog to find out all the details.

If you happen to follow me please let me know so that I can follow you back.

I knew I would mess something up in doing this, LOL I didn’t realize that we were asked a question and to share our answers. Here is mine:

The question this week:
Give 5 book related facts about yourself:

  1. I love bookmarks and whenever I see one that I like I buy it even though I really don’t need it. This is the first thing I look for when I am traveling.
  2. I love getting my books signed and meeting authors.
  3. I am good with passing on my books, unless they are signed or I love the cover/story then I have to keep them.
  4. For some reason I will buy a new release right away instead of waiting because half the time I don’t get to read it and then when I do its in paperback. I could have waited and save some money.
  5. I probably have enough books (in my TBR) to open a small book store. I know I shouldn’t buy them but its like an addiction you can’t help it. With that being said I am currently waiting for 5 books I ordered from Anderson’s from the Dark Days of Supernatural tour that was just there and the Carrie Ryan event. See what I mean?

Does my list compare anything to yours? Let me know so I can check it out.

(Meme) Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Pet Peeves

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish .

Each week on The Broke and the Bookish they will post a new Top Ten list and they will share their answers with us. Everyone is welcome to join and all you are asked to do is link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out your blog and at the same time you can check out everyone elses blog posts!

This weeks Top Ten is BOOKISH PET PEEVES.

As a book blogger or a book lover you have to admit that there are things that really get under your skin when it comes to books. I had to sit and think for a bit on what mine were because there is alot that bother me. Here is my list:

1) Stickers on books:
I hate stickers on books especially when the book has been marked down and is a bargain book and it seems no matter what those suckers are glued down. No amount of gently pulling brings it off.

2) Marked up books/Damaged covers:
Recently I had this conversation with me friend and she had bought some books and only when getting home did she realize that there was a black marker line on the bottom of the book (on the pages). Realizing then why those were on sale and not the original price like it was in the section. As for damaged covers, when a bookstore will shelf them in hopes people will buy the damaged book.

3) Not having new releases in store:
Big named bookstores (and I mean you Chapters) not having the book in store and none on order and they are new releases. Forcing you to order online. Well since this, I will order online but through another source. Taking my business elsewhere since I have to order online anyways.

4) No where to be found:
Poor inventory is another book pet peeve of mine. When you go to the bookstore and they say they have copies of the books and there is none to be found. You hunt the store looking for a copy.

5) Author events a no go:
The disadvantage to living here sometimes is the fact that not alot of authors come this way. I would have loved it if The Dark Days of Supernatural came to Montreal but they are only going to Toronto. Sure we get author events and were lucky enough to get Scott, Holly and Cassandra but it would be nice to get others.

6) People who damage their books:
Seeing people dog ear their books. I know its their book and they can do what ever they want but just watching them do it makes my blood curl. This is something I have never done even if I am dire need. I always manage to find something to hold my place be it a gum wrapper, a Kleenex, a piece of paper etc. Cracking the spine of books need I say more?

7)People who judge:
It really bothers me when people judge people based on what they read. Does it really matter if we are adults who like reading young adult books? It shouldn’t matter what you read as long as your read.

8) Listing inside the book:
If the author has written other books and just listing them in whatever order inside the book so you have no idea if the book is a series and what comes first. I tend to buy alot of books and sometimes the cover strikes me so I will pick it up and try to find out if its a series or not and its not marked anywhere.

9) Re doing covers:
When they make a movie/tv show they have to redo the covers so not only do you have the original but you have the movie/tv show version as well. Even better is starting the series with one set of covers and switching them such as the Pretty Little Liars.

10) Formatting in a series:
Finally books that are in a series and they start out as paperbacks (trades) and switch to hardcover. This frustrates me to no end and then waiting like forever for it to come out in paperback so that it can match my series.

Bonus one:
Covers and Books:
Why is it that the same book has to have different covers? I have noticed this with alot of books released in Canada is different from the US etc. Why can’t we all have one cover? As for books why is that we all can get the same book? Example not being released in Canada, or the US etc?

This is my pet peeves what are yours?

It’s Monday What are you reading? #11

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Its the first official day of Spring but looking out my window I am thinking that Mother Nature didn’t get that memo. Its been snowing for a couple of hours now and I see its staying. Environment Canada said 5 to 10cm of the white stuff but yet The Weather Channel said nope more like rain with snow mixed it. Who do you believe?

Its hard to believe its already Monday again, where did the week go?

Last week was a rough week in reading but there was a few things going on IRL (in real Life) that pulled me from reading.

I was currently reading this last week:

I ended up having to put it down because I was finding it hard to read. The main characters mother had cancer and brain tumor. IRL a very good friend of mine who I grew up with in New Brunswick was in a hospital here in Quebec (sadly I was about 4 hours from there and couldn’t get to visit her). She was here because she was gettting her tumor on the brain removed. So as I was reading this I kept thinking of her. Thankfully the dr removed what he needed and my friend got a clean bill of health.

So I ended up picking up and reading this:

I admit I fell of the book buying ban and bought this. Since Michael’s spring break earlier this month we ended up watching Cake Boss and loving it. I have watched Cake Boss before but since watching it again with Michael I admit I was curious about Buddy and wanted to read it. My review for this is coming up very soon.

The other book I picked up and currently reading is:

I am only a few chapters in but really liking it so far.

So this week all I have planned to do is finishing reading both of these books:

Wishing everyone a great reading week.

(Author Interview) Margaret Peot + Giveaway

Today I am very lucky to have the opportunity to interview the author of Inkblots Margaret Peot. (You can see my review of Inkblots here.)

Cindy: When you do your own inkblots do you instantly see your image or is it a work in progress?

Margaret: Sometimes I see something instantly, no problem, and some inkblots take awhile to reveal themselves. Its like working a crossword puzzle—there’s a sticky clue, you sleep on it and the next day it seems so simple you wondered why it was hard the day before.

This inkblot I thought looked like two seahorse-like creatures facing each other:

Then my son Sam (age 9) walked by and said, “Oh, look at that face! See? Two eyes, and a nose, ears on top and a big screaming mouth!”

So I started to draw into it, and ended up with:

The screaming mouth became a fluffy penguin stomach.

Cindy: Isn’t that so cute? Love it. Its hard to believe that actually started out as an inkblot. Do you have a favorite inkblot you have done and if so, what is it and why?

Margaret: My current favorite inkblot is Baby Monster. It is quite large, 22” x 30”. I did it five years ago, when my son was four years old—the blot looked like him (if he were a cute monster) asleep, all tangled up in his sheets and toys. It is hanging in my son’s room—I gave it to him.

Cindy: Another great one and I can only imagine how nice it must look enlarged. You have worked on some pretty amazing Broadway shows! What was your favorite to work with and why?

Margaret: I have lots of Broadway favorites. I especially enjoyed working with the design team on Shrek the Musical. Tim Hatley’s costume designs were witty and fun. For the show, I painted Pinocchio. I puzzled for ages over how to paint fabric so it looked like wood. But once I figured it out (sort of a monoprint process), it was like a stubborn crossword clue—why hadn’t I thought of it before?!

My favorite costume to paint, without question, was for American Ballet Theater’s production of Sleeping Beauty, designed by Willa Kim. She designed Carabosse—the evil fairy who curses Beauty. Ms. Kim said, I want her to look gorgeous but sinister, as if she was “rotting from within.” So the draper (the woman who made the costume) and I figured out how to collage and paint fabric, so that she looked like she was made of beetle wings, and vines, and bits from the forest floor– lovely and poisonous. It was totally collaborative. I can’t think when I have had more fun working on a costume.

Cindy: As an artist, do you have a favorite medium to work with?

Margaret: India ink. Really! It is wonderful to make inkblots with, of course, but is also a wonderful drawing and painting tool. When you thin it with water, it makes lovely warm washes.

Cindy: I am really looking forward to working with India ink more. Are you currently working on anything right now?

Margaret: I am painting planets. This one is paper mounted on board. You can see the combination of watery India ink and paint that I distressed the background with before I started painting the planet.

Cindy: Love that one. Looking back at your inkblots from when you were in kindergarten do you still see the same image or something else? (That must have been amazing to look at all these years later.)

Margaret: It was amazing. I was stunned that my mother had saved them for so many years! I can’t remember if I saw pictures in them as a child. What I recall mostly is loving how the tempera colors blended between the folded halves. I thought it was magic.

Cindy: My son and I had so much fun doing the ones we did and I am sure we will creat more and i will be keepig them. Funny enough as we were doing them. He would see things I didn’t. When you’re not busy doing inkblots, what do you do?

Margaret: I read, hang out with my son and husband, cook, write and draw in my sketchbook. I do woodcuts, and paint a costume or two. And I am learning to swim!

Cindy: I was learning to swim too but I kept getting ear infections and sadly had to stop my lessons. Being as busy as you are, do you have time to read and — if so — what are you currently reading?

Margaret: I am reading two things. I am on the last book of Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven series. My son reccommended them, and they are really fun. I am also reading Faithful Place by Tana French, which is wonderful—hard to tear myself away from it to do anything.

(I hope that this is the correct cover and book for Fablehaven)

Cindy: Hmm I have never read Fablehaven but it sounds interesting. I will have to check them out. What would people be surprised to discover about you? (That they might not know)

Margaret: I really like to watch baseball, or listen to it on the radio. My mother and I used to watch it together when I was a child, and I love everything about it.

Cindy: What inspires you?

Margaret: I love looking at art. I am currently really in to the paintings of Walton Ford. And I love to go to the beach—even in the winter.

I would love to thank Margaret for taking the time out of her busy schedule for answering my questions and to the lovely Diane for arranging this interview for me. Thank you ladies.

I was going to do a separate post with our inkblots but since my computer has been acting funny most of the week I thought I would just add them to this post. As you can see we didn’t complete them because Michael would see different elements in them and wanted to wait before drawing on them.

Looking at the photos I see things I didn’t see before so I am happy we didn’t do anything to the pictures yet but I am thinking I might go and photocopy them before hand.

Give Away:
I was lucky enough to score a copy for one of my readers to win.

All you have to do is go to The Inkblot’s site and tell me which one is your favorite Inblot and why.

Sorry but this is open only to Canadian and US mailing address. Sorry no PO Boxes.

(Review)Inkblot

  1. Title: Inkblot
    Author: Margaret Peot
    Pub Date: March 2011
    Publisher: Boyds Mills Press
    Pages: 56

Source: I received a copy of Inkblot from publicist Diane Saarinen and Boyds Mills Press for review purposes.

  2. Summary:
Inkblots aren’t just for psychology… Just as Leonardo was inspired by the haphazard swirls in marble, and Victor Hugo dribbled coffee and wine on paper to create new imagery, noted artist, printmaker, and Broadway costume designer Margaret Peot takes inkblots to new creative heights with this stunning, hands-on celebration of their beauty and potential. She presents the many insights and techniques she has gained throughout her career – from basic tips and information on paper and ink to advanced techniques for transforming inkblots into works of art. *from publishers site

When I say inkblots what do you think? What do you think inkblots are used for?

Inkblots are not just for psychoanalysis but its also a great way to get your creative juices flowing if you feel as though you are creatively blocked.

Did you know that Leonardo de Vinci saw landscapes and battles in the swirls on a marble wall? Did you know that Victor Hugo found castles and monsters in his splatters?

This is something I can relate to because I have commented several times to people that I can see images of faces in the patterns of blinds, or bodies in pictures. I have to admit that I always felt a little foolish because no one else seemed to see them but I have found that if I having a hard time creatively I have looked at inkblots and for some reason its always worked.

The last time I did inkblots (it was actually paint blots) was when I was in school. I had so much fun doing them but for some reason over the years I have stopped doing them. Since receiving this book I have decided that this is something I need to get back into.

Margaret does an excellent job explaining the whole process in this book. She begins with listing a master supply list (don’t worry if you don’t have everything you can improvise like we did) and then in each chapter she lets you know what you should be using.

The book is divided into five sections and called:
-Making Inkblots (techniques to ink blotting)
-Drawing into Inkblots (tips for drawing into your inkblots to make it look like something)
-How to look, how to see (a top ten list for looking at inkblots)
-The Inkblot Sketchbook (tips for picking out the perfect sketchbook, how to fill it and some exercises you can do)
-The Final Fold (includes inkblots done by people)

I was going to include some of the inkblots we did but right now for some reason my computer doesn’t’ want to read my sd card from my camera so you will have to come back on the weekend to see our creations. We had alot of fun doing them and seeing what we could see in them.

I really enjoyed this book because everything was explained and nothing was complicated. I know the next time I have hit my creative road blog I will remember to grab a sheet of paper, my ink and create a inkblot.

Check back tomorrow for my interview with Margaret Peot and on Saturday for the inkblots that Michael and I did.
