Summary:
Hey New York! Are you ready for Nate Rocks?

Fifth grader Nathan Rockledge has been counting down the days—and meals—until his class trip to New York City. Now that the big event is finally here, he can barely stand the excitement. After all, isn’t this what being a fifth grader is all about? Oh sure, his Mom is one of the chaperones, his annoying sister Abby is tagging along, and that know-it-all classmate, Lisa, will be there as well. However, none of that matters. Not when he’ll be with his best friends, Tommy and Sam.

While seeing the sights, his teacher wants his class to take notes, but Nathan has other ideas. With paper and pencil in hand, Nathan prefers to doodle, transforming himself into Nate Rocks, boy hero. Amid ninja pigeons to fend off, aliens to attack, and the baseball game of the century to save, will Nate Rocks be able to save the day one more time?

As a mom to a ten year old I am always looking for great books for him to read and I think I stumbled onto a great series, Nate Rocks.

This is the fourth book in the series and I have to say you probably don’t have to read the books in order but I am sure that I will have to purchase them in order for Michael to read them. He is very much like me and he likes to read books in order and not jump all over the place.

Nate Rockledge aka Nate Rocks is eleven years old and loves adventures of all kinds. Which is just the perfect book for  boys. I know Michael will really enjoy the books.

The book was a pretty quick read and I read it pretty fast. It was actually in one sitting.

One of the perks to being a fifth grader for Nate is the annual grade five school trip to New York City. (Who doesn’t love NYC?) Nate is excited and while he is waiting for his parents to fill out the form Nate begins to day dream.

In this day dream their is a huge robot and he has decided to make trouble in the city. The mayor has come to ask Nate to help him and his city. Quick thinking Nate leaps into action and saves the day. Everyone is happy that the robot is gone and the town is once again safe.

Nate was so involved in his day dream that he didn’t realize he was drawing all over his permission slip.

I can only image how exciting this kind of trip would be for a child as I have seen groups of kids touring NYC when I was there. Its a beautiful and magical city.

Anyways back to the book. The grade 5’s are all excited until the find out the news that the trip might be cancelled due to not enough funding. The kids brain storm to come up with ways to raise the funds for this trip.

Its was nice to read how these kids brain stormed on ways to raise the money. I love reading and watching kids come up with ideas. Not everyone will get along or have the same ideas but its nice to see kids find a way to make things work and they did with the help of some teachers. I love the little lesson that the kids learn along the way that Dreams do come true.

I think if your a parent looking for a great series of books that involve imagination this is the series for you.

Guest Post/ Nate Rocks The City Author Karen Pokras Toz

I really want to thank Karen Pokras Toz for stopping by to do this guest post for me today. I know she has been very busy promoting her newest book and touring the blogosphere.

Check back tomorrow Tuesday for my review of the books Nate Rocks The City.

Finishing A Series – It’s Not Truly the End

I never imagined typing two words would be so difficult, but when it came time to write “The End” at the end of the Nate Rocks series, my hands froze. I was at my weekly writer’s group, and I felt my eyes begin to tear up. You see, in the three previous Nate Rocks books I had written, I had never typed “The End,” because it never was, “The End” – – but this time it was, only my brain and my fingers had trouble putting those words on the screen.

When I finally did it, I just sat there – and stared. The ladies in my writing group saw me wipe my eyes and asked me what was wrong. When I explained that this character, who was so much more than a character to me, would no longer be a daily staple in my life, they said, “He’ll always be with you.” I looked back at them, smiled, and realized they were right. Not only that, he’d always be around for children to enjoy as well.

There are books (many books in fact) I have purchased for my own children over the years, which were books that I enjoyed as a child. Books that they now enjoy and may even purchase or pass down to their own children one day. In listening to my friends in my writing group, I realized that is my hope for Nate Rocks.

Nate Rocks taught me to dream big. Live on, Nate – reading rocks!

The Book Buying Tag

Recently while watching Youtube vlogs I stumbled upon this fun tag and I thought I would take part.

I am inviting all my readers to take part. If you take part please let me know in the comments below so that I can go and check all your responses.

THE BOOK BUYING TAG

1. Where do you buy your books from?

– I normally buy my books at Chapters.

2. Do you ever pre-order books and if so do you do this in-store or online?
– No I have never pre-ordered any books. I know isn’t that strange for a book blogger not to do?

3. On average, how many books do you buy a month?
-It all depends whats in the Scholastic book club form. It can be anywhere from no books to twenty books a month from the Scholastic forms. I haven’t really bought much from the bookstores.

4. Do you used your local library?

-We tend to use the local library more in the summer time because Michael takes part in the summer reading activities and its easier to get the books back their on time then during the school year.

5. If so, how my books can you/do you borrow at a time?
-Our cards have a 50 book limit so you can borrow within that limit and we have three library cards so thats like a 150 book limit. The only time we ever used that was when our library was getting renovated and we maxed out all three cards. During the summer I think we always take out books/magazines/games/cds/videos/video games on each visit.

6. What is your opinion on library books?
– I am really happy with our library because they always have the newest books and magazines. They are always in great shape and we have awesome library events throughout the year.

7. How do you feel about charity shop/second hand books?
-I love going into second hand bookstores because sometimes you can find great books and great prices.

8. Do you keep your read and TBR pile together/on the same book shelf?
– My whole bookcases are TBR piles.

9. Do you plan to read all of the books that you own?
– I would love to read all the books I own but realistically its probably not going to happen. To many books to read.

10. What do you do with books you that you own that you feel you will never read/felt you did not enjoy?
– The books that I feel that I will never read or felt like I would enjoy are passed on to friends, church or donation boxes.

11. Have you ever donated books?
-Yes I donate books all the time.

12. Have you ever been on a book buying ban?
– Yes I have been on a book buying ban.

13. Do you feel that you buy too many books?

Honestly yes I feel as though I buy too many books. I have to blame the Scholastic book club forms that my son comes home with. I know I don’t buy as much as I use to from Chapters since switching to the plums reward card. With the plum card I have to pay full price for the books and I no longer get discounts like I did with the iRewards card so that has really helped my book buying.

So those are my answers looking forward to seeing and reading yours
