EXCERPT:
I put on a sweatband and sneakers and brought down a water bottle. My plan was to pedal non-stop for an hour. I figured I could do it, since I was used to riding my own bike, and how different could this bike be? I should lose at least one pound that way, I told myself. So if I use the bike every day, in fifteen days I’ll have lost the weight I want to lose.
I stepped over boxes and piles of books to reach the bike, which sat in a dark corner. This corner had a musty smell, like an old church that hadn’t been dusted since Queen Victoria was my age. A fake raccoon-fur hat someone had given my dad as a joke hung on the wall nearby.
The bike seat was too high for me, but I couldn’t move it because it was screwed in place. Gripping the handlebars for support, I tried to heave my leg over the seat several times without success. I was becoming angry and sweaty, so I started breathing deeply, like I was having a baby, to calm myself down. “Hoo hoo hoo.”
“Hilary!” shouted my mom. “Why are you making monkey noises?”
I froze. I knew that if I said, “It’s nothing,” she’d come down, and I didn’t want her to think I needed help getting on a stationary bicycle. So I called, “I’m just playing a game.”
I managed to lift myself on to the bike. I had to stretch to reach the pedals, but I finally did and started pumping. It was O.K. at first, but soon, my muscles felt like some psycho was using them as rubber bands. And some people actually do this for fun! What’s wrong with them, I thought. I reached for the water bottle and tried to squirt some water in my mouth. Nothing but air came out. I’d forgotten to fill the bottle! I threw it away and continued to pump furiously. Objects on the wall began rattling, and I was making so many strange noises my mother must have thought a whole pack of monkeys was performing a conga line in the basement. I began to have visions of monkeys in spangly pink bikinis
kicking up their heels (did monkeys have heels, I wondered) on stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Suddenly my sweatband fell over my eyes. I didn’t stop to fix it, though. You’re going to pump for the full hour, not for fifty-nine minutes, I ordered myself. Instead, I tried nodding vigorously to get the sweatband to fall under my chin. It fell over my nose and I couldn’t breathe. Then something dark and furry leapt on my head, covering my eyes and tickling my face like a bunch of feathers. I screamed, batting at the thing with one hand and pumping frantically, as if I could escape that way. I soon realized it was only my dad’s hat, but I still couldn’t get it off. Finally I stumbled off the bike and yanked the hat’s tail away from my eyes.
I had no energy left to remove the hat, so I left it on and trudged upstairs. I passed my mom, who took one look at me and started to snicker. Ignoring her, I went into the kitchen to check the clock. I’d been on the bike five minutes.
So that was the end of my experiment with exercising.

When Landon shows up at the mall and Juliette prevents a disaster, he can’t stop thinking about that sweet elf. Excerpt from one of the books in the
Box Set:
Amelia stretched out her fingers, finding the burnt residue cool against her
pale skin, lacking the heat responsible for the land’s horrific transformation.
As she searched the valley for the conflagration’s source, or any living being,
toxic particles coated her lungs with each labored breath.
Normally this lush region would have been filled with the merry songs of
chittering birds, and the scattering rustle of creatures hidden amid the tall
grass. As she walked the field, the only sounds were the crunch of charred
vegetation, and her occasional cough as her chest attempted to expel the
smoke-laden air.
She scanned the horizon, seeking flames. Gloomy air surrounded her, with
smoke so thick she couldn’t even discern the fire’s glow through its
suffocating layers.
Amelia pushed forward, drawing shallow breaths as more particles lined
her throat, turning coughs to occasional gags as she reached what should have
been the forest’s edge. In place of towering trees, she found blackened stumps.
Her heart skipped at the sight, her mind rejecting the ruined vision of the
land she had loved.
“What happened?” she asked the desolate terrain. “What, by the gods, took
place here?”
She had cherished this land with its lush shrubbery, thick enough to hide
even her darkest secrets. A place all were once welcomed to enjoy shaded
comfort, perfumed by the sweet scent of fresh grass and wildflowers. Now, only
cooling embers remained.
When she reached the clearing’s center, a pitiful squeak drew her
attention. She knelt, brushing her hand through ash and soot to find a bird
chirping meekly between desperate gasps. Gently cradling the suffering creature
between her hands, Amelia closed her eyes.
As though anticipating her intentions, the wren remained motionless
against her palms, and its labored breathing eased.
Settling her mind upon the bird, soft-blue light emanated from between
her fingers, bathing the unremarkable brown feathers in cerulean light. As
Amelia’s power drew out the toxins poisoning the delicate creature, it first
flapped its wings, and then flew from Amelia’s hands.
“Fly away,” she urged. “The air remains poisonous.”
The bird chirped in thanks before fluttering away, though Amelia was
uncertain as to the safety of its chosen direction.
She resumed her survey of the ruined forest, helping a struggling
squirrel in the same manner she had the bird. As it scampered away, Amelia
stood and attempted to brush the soot from her hands, but only managed to
smudge the fine black powder.
Without audible warning, orange flames surged toward her, forcing Amelia
to jump to her left, rolling through the fire’s debris, hands and knees
stinging as they encountered hidden rocks.
A roar resounded, shattering the unnatural silence as Amelia glanced
toward the sky to face a looming figure.
Above, darker than the choking smoke, hovered an immense beast, its
wingspan casting a wide shadow over her curled form. The deep purple wings had
a feathered appearance, glowing with what appeared to be golden flames, though
they did not burn. Instead the menacing creature’s wings fanned hotter,
reminding Amelia of a forge fire amplified by a blacksmith’s bellow. From an
ebony body, its back feet were hooved, but its front arms had claws similar to
a bird’s, while larger talons protruded from the outer tips of both wings. A
terrifying creature of utter destruction.
The dragon stared down with glinting silver eyes, glowing nostrils
framing the fire within. With each methodical beat of its wings, Amelia’s
blonde tresses were alternately tugged and blown back in the wash of hot air.
Fear consumed her, stole her breath, and froze every thought. She briefly
considered running, but knew she would never escape the creature’s wrath.
Shakily, Amelia climbed to her feet, her blue eyes wide as she waited for
her inevitable fate. The dragon’s jaws opened, flames spilling to engulf the
girl below before she could even utter a scream.

EXCERPT:
“If you say it again, I’ll stab you,” I said as I struggled to adjust the formal gown. The bulging bustle of fabric on my backside made my lower back itch, and my corset was too tight. A proper lady’s gown indeed, but I wondered how anyone who dressed in proper fashion got anything done. I touched the brim of my tiny top hat. It, along with my parasol, were the only pieces of the outfit I actually liked. Of course, the parasol had a feature that allowed me to slip the White Queen into the shaft to serve as a handle. Leave it to the Countess to think of that.
“All I said was that you look lovely. I hardly think that’s a stabbing offense.”
“Shows what you know,” I replied as I eyed him sidelong. He had changed into a fine suit and wore a black top hat. I both hated and loved being there with him. My conflicting emotions made me cranky.
“Tickets,” said a man standing just outside the door of the Crystal Palace.
“Good morning,” William said politely and handed the man our tickets.
The man stamped the date on the tickets then handed them back. Nodding, he motioned for us to enter.
Taking me gently by the arm, as a gentleman ought to do, William escorted me inside.
While the Crystal Palace’s ornate structure, made of glass and iron, towering several stories high was a sight to behold from the outside, nothing quite prepared me for the marvels inside.
As we entered, a cacophony of sounds reached our ears. The sweet melodies coming from a stand of self-playing harps, the screech of monkeys, the hum of machines, and the sounds of hundreds of voices rolled to our ears all at once.
The structure had been built around the tall ash trees that had stood in the park. They still stood standing tall in the middle of the structure. Fountains lined the center promenade. The crowd gasped and stepped back as a group from Africa passed on their way toward their display, lions on leashes walking in front of them. Not far behind them, a man wearing a straw hat jogged past pulling a rickshaw, two laughing—and elegantly dressed—ladies inside.
I gasped as a man flew overhead on wings made of lightweight material. To my great surprise, he flapped his wings, the metal of the clockwork bones and joints revealed when the sun overhead struck him just right.
William chuckled. “Shall we take it all in?”
Barely able to breathe, I nodded.
“Now, there is my Alice,” he said softly. “Her curious eyes open wide.”
I smiled. “It’s a wonderland.”
