Earlier in the week you got to read my recap of the first ever YA Fest that took place this past weekend in Montreal and today I am sharing Jennifer’s thoughts on the event.

I am so happy that my bestie invited me along to the YA Fest! I knew that we were planning on going, but when I heard that she had won tickets, well, I didn’t presume that I’d be the invitee.

I had no idea what to expect, other than I’d get to listen to a panel of authors throughout the day.  Well, it was so much more than that. Held at the Jewish Public Library, one had a chance to interact intimately with the authors.  No one was in a rush and no one hurried you along. This was a real treat!!! How many people get to have an actual conversation with numerous authors in one afternoon?

Cindy and I sat through the first panel together, so I won’t say too much about this talk, to avoid repetition. It is worth mentioning that one cannot presume to write a book, have it published, and meet Opera.  It takes a lot of work. I am so grateful that these authors took time out of their busy schedules to travel to Montreal and be a part of this festival.

After lunch, the topic I chose was “Far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells…a prince in disguise!” The authors on this panel included Danielle Paige, Sarah Mlynowski, S.M. Beiko, and Karl Kerschl.  Well, what I learnt from this panel is that there is no one formula to creating your own fantasy world. Some authors create an entire outline of their world and then write to fill in the blanks, as does Sarah.  However, Karl loves creating a world and watching the characters change as the world evolves around them during the creative process. Some authors write to music and film scores while others write to the sound of silence.    The worlds they create are as different as the authors themselves. All authors agreed that they write and continue to write in hopes of continually pleasing their audience.

The last panel topic I attended was, “Uncharted Territory.” This panel included Chantal Guertin, Adi Alsaid, Brendan Kiely, and Sarah Mlynowski. Whether or not to have your main character travel is completely up to the writer.  These authors used personal travelling experiences to include in their novels. Most touching was Brendan’s journey. He wrote about his Granddad who suffered from Alzheimer’s and the journey they took in Ireland. Needless, to say, I was sold and felt compelled to purchase the book, “The Last True Love Story.”  I am also grateful for the humorous storytelling of Chantal. I could relate to her vacation in Disney World and the goal of staying organized and on time. No pausing for bathroom breaks, one must be on the next ride. The reason of whether or not the main character travels is different depending on the author.  Some may want the character to find themselves when put in a completely new environment. Others write to demonstrate how a character will interact with their companions or interact with complete strangers.

All in all, listening to these panel discussions was invaluable to my writing career and instilled greater inspiration in my life to continue my writing journey.

In closing, I’d like to give a huge shout-out to Monique Polak.  Monique was my teacher at Marianopolis College and has played a pivotal role in my education and a huge encouragement to the developments in my writing.  Her novels are heartfelt, and her smiles are contagious. Being a book blogger for almost 10 years, I am always excited about books, book signings, and book events and I love to share them with you as you can see from various past posts I have made about it.

If you now me in real life or even online you will know that I live in Canada, specifically Montreal. Even though we are a hustling bustling city like Toronto we don’t have anything really book related happening here and getting young adult authors into Montreal never happens so I am always jealous when I hear all these fantastic authors going into Toronto for book signings.

But now I can actually say that I am happy to be living here in Montreal because due to the hard work of the Jewish Public Library and with help from Sarah Mlynowski Montreal now has the beginning of a fantastic young adult book festival.

Yesterday, May 27th, I attended the MTL YA FEST! at the Jewish Public Library. Not sure what to expect I went in with the expectation of hearing some fantastic authors speak on various panels. The crowd was small and was diverse and was filled with book lovers of all ages, plus they were from all over the city.

Upon entering everyone was presented with the totebag at the door. Inside the bag there was a pin, a program guide, a comic brochure, spring/summer activity booklet with events happening at the library and a  book mark from one of the sponsors, Babar Books. Sadly my bag didn’t consist of a sampler of a first few chapters of four books. (I think the comic brochure was instead of the other sampler)

As you walked in Babar Books had a table filled with books you could buy from all the authors that were in attendance. Of course even though I had my own tote bag filled with books to get signed I had to pick up a few other books that I wanted to pick up.

This Owl Strand tote bag always comes with me to author events  ever since I picked this up on my first BEA trip way back in 2010 and its makes for a great conversation piece with authors. So this is literally filled with books I had already owned.

These are the books that I bought at the event: The Gospel of Winter & All American Boys by Brendan Kiely (just before MTL YA Fest I started reading The Last True Love Story and fell in love with the book and knew I wanted to pick up his two previous books and honestly after speaking with Brendan I am so happy I did. He was a fantastic and humble author. It was awesome to speak with him. I will be picking up his newest book Traditions this week.) Also before the event I read The Rule of Thirds by Chantel Guertin and was hooked so I had to pick up the rest of the series Depth Field, Leading Lines and Golden Hour.

On hand some authors had some goodies that I happened to pick up as well.

One of the things that I loved about this low key, laid back event was the author signing at the end. I always love to meet authors and talk with them but sometimes you just don’t get the chance to interact one on one with them especially at Book Expo when you don’t want to hold up the line and be respectful of the authors behind you waiting to get their book signed. I know to some people they don’t care and will dominate but I have always felt the opposite.

Each table held two authors who would sign the program or your book(s) and talk with you and you could take photos and talk with them. It was nice being able to talk with authors. I loved my conversation with Aimee Friedman (we spoke about NYC and the Strand), Adi Alsaid about the previous book expo were I had originally met him, Nic Stone who I loved she is a kick ass inspiring author, Danielle Paige who was also amazing and inspiring, and so much more.

Throughout the day there was panels you can listen to and I took part in three.

“Industry Insiders”

This panel consisted of editors, professors, publicists and booksellers.

The Authors speaking on the panel was:

• Monique Polak is a local Montreal author who is a teacher and has 23 books under her belt
• Sarah Mlynowski was originally from Montreal but now lives in NYC and is the author of numerous books
• Jo Treggiari is the author of Ashes, Ashes and currently lives in Nova Scotia and runs a bookstore
• Vikki VanSickle is the author of Winnowing and is a works in publishing
• Aimee Friedman who is an author and works at Scholastic

I really enjoyed this panel because there is so much more to being an author and having authors tell you its not easy to write a book and expect it to be published a lot goes into it. It was interesting to hear also that a few actually work in publishing houses.

The next panel I took part in was “Young Love” and the authors on this panel was:

• Vicki Grant, who is also living in Nova Scotia and has several books under her belt as well
• Adi Alsaid
• Gloria Chao, did you know she was a dentist before becoming an author?
• Chantel Guertin, who is also another Canadian author and works on the Marilyn Denis show
• Sandra Gulland who is also Canadian and writes historical fiction

This was such a fun panel to be a part of. I love hearing who or what inspires authors and this was brought up along with a few things that I don’t think a author wanted brought up but it quickly became the topic of conversation during the panel and during the signing.

Finally the last panel was An Illustration is Worth 1000 words and the authors on this panel were:

• Karl Kerchl who is an illustrator
• S.M Beiko
• Danielle Paige did you know she is working on a graphic novel/comic?
• J.F Dubeau who is a local author as well

This was another fun panel to listen to, I am knew to graphic novels/mangas/comics so it was interesting to hear how much more goes into it and about the graphics, fonts etc in books. Up until the time of writing this I knew what each was called but sitting here to write its slipped my mind which is not good.

Finally the closing keynote speaker was Nic Stone and all I have to say about her is WOW she is so inspiring and funny. Did you know that rhinos are just a fatter version of a unicorn? After sitting back and thinking about it she is right lol

Nic talked about all kinds of things in her speech that were funny, thoughtful and inspiring. When you looked around the room people were either smiling or laughing. She definitely has a beautiful way of speaking that makes you want to sit back and listen to her.

After it was wrapped up, then the signing began. I have to admit I wasn’t sure if I would be able to get my books signed but happy to say I was lucky enough. The room was not packed at all. Sadly I didn’t think to do author pictures. I think I just wanted to be there in the moment and talking with the authors instead of having a camera in their face.

I quickly want to thank the director of the children’s department at the Jewish Public library and the founder of MTL YA FEST! Talya Pardo who I got to speak briefly with after the event and I look forward to next year. Its nice to finally see something like this here in Montreal for everyone to take part in.

This is the first book in a new and exciting series that I am really excited to read and continue. When I first got the email for this I knew this was a book and author I really wanted to try out and I am so happy that I did. This was a quick read and I think I managed to read it almost in one sitting but I do have to credit a rainy day for allowing me to do so.

Just before I get into my review I just have to take a quick second to comment on the cover, isn’t it pretty? If I saw this sitting on the bookshelf or table at a bookstore I would definitely be drawn to it and want to pick it up to see what the book is about.

Also I noticed after I read this that I am starting to like some young adult fantasy. This is one of the things I love about doing my blog and taking part in blog tours because it exposes you to different books and genres you might not normally pick up or hear about.

I was instantly hooked after reading the first page of the book and that is because our main character is Esme,  she is a 15 year old girl and she is sitting in the front row of her father’s wedding and the vicar has just asked if anyone knows why they should not be lawfully wed and she raises her hand and says I object.

Instantly we are thrown into the story line because you want to know why would Esme want to object to her father getting married? Is it the fact she doesn’t like his new wife? Is there another reason? All the things that make you want to read and I know I wanted to learn why she would object. The only think I found that was a little off was the ceremony continued like nothing happened. Like what Esme had to say didn’t matter and I hope that it would be revealed why no one listened to her.

We do find out why Esme objected at the wedding and after reading it I can honestly see why she would. Seven years prier her mother, Ariane has disappeared and everyone has come to accept it and move on with their lives, her father included but to Esme she feels as though there is more to the story and she is determined to find out what happened to her mother.

When she is left at home while her dad goes on his honeymoon Esme decides that she is going to look into what really happened and get to the bottom of it. Though all her research she discovers Aeolia and enchanted world. Its here that she begins to find out the first clues to her mother’s disappearance. Will Esme uncover the hidden mystery and find out what really happened to her mother?

I instantly feel in love with Esme’s character. She is a girl who truly loves her mother and is loyal to her. She is the only one that hasn’t given up on her and you can see that in her. I loved that she was a strong and determined girl who let nothing stand in her way and she overcame her fears. I think more middle grade/ young adult books need more characters like Esme. She didn’t let anything stop her.

Through her search she makes two really good friends, Daniel and Lillian who help her and reading this friendship develop was so sweet. It makes you realize that you want friends just like them.

What will Esme do when she begins to uncover who her mother really was?
