The Castaways Blog Tour & Review

PUB DATE: July 7, 2009

The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand is part of the July blog tour by Hachette.

Thank you to Miriam for sending this book. I am always honored to be part of the tours of books that Hachette offers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket with her husband and their three young children. She grew up in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and traveled extensively before settling on Nantucket, which has been the setting for her five previous novels. Hilderbrand is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the graduate fiction workshop at the University of Iowa.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Greg and Tess MacAvoy are one of four prominent Nantucket couples who count each other as best friends. As pillars of their close-knit community, the MacAvoys, Kapenashes, Drakes, and Wheelers are important to their friends and neighbors, and especially to each other. But just before the beginning of another idyllic summer, Greg and Tess are killed when their boat capsizes during an anniversary sail. As the warm weather approaches and the island mourns their loss, nothing can prepare the MacAvoy’s closest friends for what will be revealed.

MY THOUGHTS:

Elin Hilderbrand is a new author to me. She has written seven previous books and from the descriptions of the books they all sound like they will be fun summer reads. I have them all on my wish list of books to read.

The story takes place in Nantucket. It involves four couples. These four couples are all the best of friends that live in Nantucket all year round. The chapters are told by the eight characters involved in the book.

The characters are:
Greg & Tess-Greg is a womanizer & in a band. Tess is a mother with two kids.

Deliah & Jeffrey-Deliah is a mother of two kids and party girl. Jeffrey is a local farmer

Phoebe & Addison-Phoebe has a drug problem, loves to spend money and a trophy wife. She use to have a twin, Reed, but he died jumping from a window at the World Trade Center on September 11th. Addison is a rich real estate agent on Nantucket. He is divorce with a sixteen year old daughter.

Chief & Andrea-Eddie (The Chief) is the police chief. Andrea is Tess’s cousin and is a mother to two kids. She use to date Jeffrey.

In my opinion it appears as though Greg and Tess are the golden couple of the group. Greg and Tess have had their fair share of trouble from countless miscarriages Tess has suffered to the possibility of Greg’s infidelity that almost caused them to end their marriage.

Tess and Greg managed to over come it all and planned on celebrating their 12th anniversary together and planned to sail from their home in Nantucket to nearby Martha’s Vineyard and possibly spend the night. On the way their, their boat ends up capsized and both Greg and Tess are killed.

The rest of the group is dealing with the sudden lose of Greg and Tess and are trying to cope with their deaths. Out of the group its Addison, Andrea and Deliah who seem to be having a harder time dealing with the deaths. But why? Could it be that Addison and Deliah have secrets that no one in the group knows about?

We know Andrea would be having a difficult time handling Tess’s death because they were very close and were cousins. She at times felt like a mother to Tess. She decides that since Tess and Greg had no provisions in the will regarding the two kids she decides that since she is family she will take them. This comes to much disappointment in Deliah.

I enjoyed the book. There was tons of secrets going on within the group and it made you wonder how will it play out and would they be revealed. Looking forward to reading more by Elin.

This is the third day of the tour with two more days to go.

    Sookie Stackhouse Reading Challenge

I heard about this on twitter as well as on BethFishReads blog. At first I wasn’t going to take part as I already have alot to read and I am already doing two challenges but suddenly with reading all the tweets I decided to take the plunge and join the Sookie Stackhouse Reading Challenge. I also managed to convince Donna to join me in this challenge as well. We agreed on the way to our local blogger meet up that we will do this challenge together.

The great thing about this challenge that it starts July 1, 2009 but only ends June 30, 2010 so you have a whole year to read all the books. I ended up getting all of the books except that last one because the last one was in hard cover and I am hoping that by the time I get to the last one that it will be out in paper back. Thankfully the bookstore had a big promo so I managed to get one book free.

    The Books:
    Dead Until Dark
    Living Dead in Dallas
    Club Dead
    Dead to the World
    Dead as a Doornail
    Definitely Dead
    All Together Dead
    From Dead to Worse
    Dead and Gone

To find out more about it or to take part in it then go to BethFishReads blog for all the details.

    Local Book Blogger Meet up

Its that time of the month again when I got to meet up as a group with Avis, Donna and Tina at our little tea shop. The tea shop is called Chat Noir and its located in Verdun, Quebec. (Its on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Wellington Street)

Here is a picture from the outside of the tea shop: (Next time I will get a better picture of the front of the tea shop.)

Here are some pictures inside the tea shop:

(First pic-is inside the store of the front entrance)

(Second pic-is of the kitchen and cash. Those silver tins are full of tea’s)

(Third pic- this is where we sit each and every month.)

I love our meet ups because its nice to talk about books, what we got in the mail, the latest news in books (such as negative reviews and authors comments) and we even spoke about NY again.

Here is the books that made their way home with me:

From Tina I got: This Toy Story 2 VHS she picked up at a yard sale for Michael, (I have been looking for this for Michael as we are always borrowing it from the library.) Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner and this Lake Champlain bookmark from her little vacation recently.

From Donna I snagged The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler.

It was another great meet up with some great Ice Tea, Hot Apple Cider and cheesecake. See you guys in August.

    Books Bought Meme #11

I have to send a huge THANK YOU to Michael for making me this image to go with Books Bought Meme. Thank You so very much Michael. I love it.

If you want to take part in this weekly Books Bought Meme you can use this image and post in your blog about the books you bought this past week and leave a comment in my Books Bought this week and I will go and comment on your blog.

This week the only books I bought were from a second hand bookstore in my area. They are super cheap $3 for all books and children’s I believe is $1.50.

    I bought:
-The Polar Express: Trip to the North Pole by Ellen Weiss
-Mates, Dates, and Sole Survivors by Cathy Hopkins
-Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
    -Model Railways
    -That Summer by Sarah Dessen
-Crazy About Lili by William Weintraub

The store is called Robertson’s. Its very well laid out and not cramped all together like some second handbook stores. Plus everything is well labelled so you can find what your looking for.

If you are in the Montreal area and want to go its located in Beaconsfield. Take highway 20 and get off at St. Charles Boulevard. Its 275 Elm Avenue.

On the way home from lunch with Donna on Thursday Michael and I had to stop into the Metro grocery store in the mall. We walked around for a bit and then went in to Clio (a cute little bookstore) and Michael picked up two books.

-The Berenstain Bears Class Trip by Jan& Mike Berenstain
-My Own VERY LONELY FIREFLY Coloring Book by Eric Carle

    Library Loot #2 July 3rd

Library Loot is a weekly meme hosted by EVA and Marg. In this meme you share what books you borrowed from the library this past week. Just remember when you post your Library Loot to go back to both EVA’s and Marg’s blogs and put your link in their Library Loot post.

Here is what we still have left from our last visit to the library:

    • A Garden of opposites by Nancy Davis
    • The Foggy Foggy Forest by Nick Sharratt
    • The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Mail by Janet & Allan Ahlberg
    • The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland

We went to the library this morning because it was the Summer Reading Program story time. The theme this morning was Cats & Dogs. The kids got to listen to a story about a cat and dog. After the story they make a craft based on the story. The lady who does this is fantastic and Michael loves going to story time when she is there. Ms Debbie (as she likes to be called) comes up with the best crafts. I have no idea how she does it but all I have to say Ms Debbie if you happen to be reading this “You Rock”.

This is what we took out this week:

    • Wings by Aprilynne Pike
    • If I stay by Gayle Forman
    • Between Mom & Jo by Julie Anne Peters
    • Stanely’s Wild Ride by Linda Bailey
    • Buster by Denise Fleming
    • Buster Goes to Cowboy Camp by Denise Fleming
    • Can You Growl Like a Bear by John Butler
    • Engelbert Sneem and the Dream Vacuum Machine by Mr. Daniel Postgate
    • Dog Crafts by Linda Hendry

Here is a poster that Ms Debbie does for the Summer Reading Program every year. This years theme is Go, Wild, Read! For the kids every hour you read you get one ticket and all these tickets are placed into a huge clear box and 3 times over the summer they draw a name for a prize. The prizes are usually gift certificates to various stores.

Michael is usually lucky and manages to win one. One summer he won 2 gift ceritificates.

Also at the end of summer when the reading program wraps up they have a huge party for all the kids and they usually have some kind of entertainment and then all the tickets are placed back into the box and you have a chance to win an assortment of prizes.

Thankfully families are able to take part and this is something new they have started about 2 years ago and for every 5 hours read you get a ticket to put into a special box for a family prize.

Its a great way to encourage reading over the summer for kids and mom’s too.
