Oprah’s newest Book Club Book

Today Oprah announced the latest book in her book club and its Say You’re One Of Them by Uwen Akpan.

It first came out in June of 2008. I have had this on my TBR pile since the fall of last year. It was actually part of a book win that I never got to read. Perhaps I will make it a point to take it out and read.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Each story in this jubilantly acclaimed collection pays testament to the wisdom and resilience of children, even in the face of the most agonizing circumstances.

A family living in a makeshift shanty in urban Kenya scurries to find gifts of any kind for the impending Christmas holiday. A Rwandan girl relates her family’s struggles to maintain a facade of normalcy amid unspeakable acts. A young brother and sister cope with their uncle’s attempt to sell them into slavery.

Aboard a bus filled with refugees—a microcosm of today’s Africa—a Muslim boy summons his faith to bear a treacherous ride across Nigeria. Through the eyes of childhood friends the emotional toll of religious conflict in Ethiopia becomes viscerally clear.

Uwem Akpan’s debut signals the arrival of a breathtakingly talented writer who gives a matter-of-fact reality to the most extreme circumstances in stories that are nothing short of transcendent.

My Book Case from CSN Review

Thanks Comments at dazzlejunction.com
I have to send out a huge Thank You to Jason at CSN for contacting me and asking if I would be interested in receiving and reviewing a book case from them. Of course I didn’t hestiate to email him back because I was interested. I was in need of a bookcase and I have been looking around in stores but everything I have seen was so expensive and it just wasn’t in the budget right away. So this was a blessing in disguise. Thank you again Jason.

If you haven’t already checked out CSN then you really should. I was surprised at what they had to offer online. Go and check them out they are a great online store with great prices on everyday items.

Okay so here is my review of my CSN Bookcase. Enjoy!

I got an email confirmation on the weekend saying that the bookcase left the brokerage house (because it was coming into Canada) and was on route to deliver. Any plans I had on Monday were going to be delayed because I wanted to stay in so I wouldn’t miss this delivery.

It was a very long morning waiting for the truck to come. Every bang I heard outside had me running to the window only to be disappointed. The morning passed with nothing I was constantly checking my email thinking perhaps I read it wrong. Gee whiz, I ended up even calling the delivery company to see if it was actually the day of delivery. I was told yes.

Than finally at about 2pm I happened to look out my front window to see Purolator parked out front. I wasn’t going to get to excited because sometimes I think the driver likes to tease me and I think I have a package and get excited but then sadly he drives away. Such a tease!

This was not the case. He was actually delivering…………..

THE BOOK CASE! Yea, I was so excited. I should have taken a picture of myself but didn’t think of it. Sorry.

(This is the un-assembled bookcase) There was no need for the instructions as it was all straight forward looking at everything. Upon inspection the only item I needed was a screw driver to assemble it.

There was groves in the back to slide the back pieces in which I loved. I was amazed at the quality of the book case. Pretty sturdy. I attached felt pieces to the bottom so that when I have to move it I won’t scratch the hard wood floors.
So this is the final finished product. Isn’t it a beauty? I love it.

I was wondering how I was going to place it in my living room. I already have a 5 shelf bookcase in my living room and when I started to reorganizing the books (taking the books off a small book case that was temporairly there and from the cedar chest) I realized that my other 5 shelf bookcase that I had in the basement had to come up.

So here is the end product. What do you think?

I think its much cleaner looking and not so over crowded.

The new book case now holds all my YA books. The A-Z is book ends that I bought when I got the new bookcase and between them is four books that I really want to read. Can you see what they are?

The book ends are holding The Hollow by Jessica Verday, Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink, Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev and Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow.

So all in all I am extremely happy with the newest addition in my living room. The living room looks so much neater not having a huge TBR pile of books on my cedar chest.

Thanks again Jason and CSN for sending me the book case.

September Local Book Blogger Meet Up

This past Sunday was another local book blogger meet up. Of course it was another great meet up. The time just flies when we all start talking about anything and everything.

I think that this was one of our longer meet ups.

The bloggers that were in attendance were: Donna, Avis, Linda and Tina

You can read more about what happened at Linda’s blog. I loved her quote of “what happens in the teashop, stays in the teashop.”

Some of the things we spoke up was the upcoming book sale at McGill University (I don’t think that I will be able to go although I am not sure.), the upcoming book sale in Quebec City (Avis will be attending this), of course we spoke of BEA and some other stuff.

I love meeting up with everyone because not only do we all read different genres of books but we share so much in common.

Our next meet up in October will mark the one year anniversary of us meeting up so I am sure we will do something to celebrate that. You will have to check back in October to see how we celebrated our One Year Anniversary.

This month also marked a celebration and that was Tina’s (29th LOL) Birthday on Thursday (this week). Last week we were in secret planning mode and Tina had no idea that we had a surprise for her. She was surprised that we remembered and even more surprised when she didn’t have to pay her bill. We all chipped in and that was our gift to her.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU TINA…
Okay enough of the talk here is the books I brought home this time from our meet up:

From Linda I managed to snag a copy of
The Calling by David Mack and The Tear Collector by Patrick Jones. (You can check out what Linda thought of the books by clicking on the titles.)

Then from Tina I managed to snag the following books:
Real Real by Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus (Tina has read and reviewed this book so you can see her review by clicking on the title.)
-Not Suitable for Family Viewing by Vicki Grant
-Viola in Reel Life by Adriana Trigiani
-Summer Intern by Carrie Karasyou & Jill Kargman
-The Christmas Cookie Club by Ann Pearlman

I don’t think Tina has the reviews for the rest of the books up yet but you can check back to see what she thought later on.

BBAW: Reading Habits

This is Day Three of Book Blogger Appreciation Week and the meme today is Our Reading Habits.

I was going to be creative but for some reason its not working out so I will answer the questions below in a few words.

Do you snack while you read?
-Usually I don’t tend to snack while I am reading because I read in bed.

If so, favorite reading snack?
-My favorite reading snack tends to be popcorn.

Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
-Just the thought of marking in my books scares me.

How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears?Laying the book flat open?
-I always use either a bookmark, a piece of paper or a post it. I never dog ear or lay my book flat. I cringe when I see people doing that.

Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
-I am all about fiction but if the book is interesting and its non fiction I will read it.

Hard copy or audiobooks?
-I prefer hard copy. With audio books they end up being back ground noise to me.

Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point?
-This depends on the book but I am able to put it down at points if need be.

If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away?
-Yes I do.

What are you currently reading?

-I am currently reading Love to Love you Brady’s

What is the last book you bought?
-The last book I bought was Forever by Judy Blume

Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can you read more than one at a time?
-I have to admit that I am the type of person who can only read one book at a time.

Do you have a favorite time of day and/or place to read?
-I usually like to read at night time in bed but during the day if I read I curl up on the couch and read.

Do you prefer series books or stand alone books?
-It depends on the book but I prefer stand alone books.

Is there a specific book or author that you find yourself recommending over and over?
-Right now its been Willow and Bran Hambric that I have been recommending alot lately.

How do you organize your books? (By genre, title, author’s last name, etc.?)
-Sadly I don’t have that done yet with my books. They all tend to be put on the shelf as is. The books I do keep will be organized but I am good with passing on my books.

How It Ends Review

PUB DATE: August 2009

ABOUT THE BOOK:
All Hanna’s wanted since sophomore year is Seth. She’s gone out with other guys, even gained a rep for being a flirt, all the while hoping cool, guitar-playing Seth will choose her. Then she gets him — but their relationship is hurtful, stormy and critical, not at all what Hanna thinks a perfect love should be. Bewildered by Seth’s treatment of her and in need of understanding, Hanna decides to fulfill her school’s community service requirement by spending time with Helen, her terminally ill neighbor, who she’s turned to for comfort and wisdom throughout her life. But illness has changed Helen into someone Hanna hardly knows, and her home is not the refuge it once was. Feeling more alone than ever, Hanna gets drawn into an audiobook the older woman is listening to, a fierce, unsettling love story of passion, sacrifice, and devotion. Hanna’s fascinated by the idea that such all-encompassing love can truly exist, and without her even realizing it, the story begins to change her.

Until the day when the story becomes all too real…and Hanna’s world is spun off its axis by its shattering, irrevocable conclusion.

MY THOUGHTS:

Laura Wiess is a new to me author so whenever I get a book to review from someone I haven’t heard of before I get excited. I love to discover new authors.

I am not sure who sent the book to me to read and review but the book is from MTV.

I have to tell you in advance that How It Ends is a very emotional and sad story. When I read the back of the book I thought that it was a story about Hanna and everything Hanna. I admit the story begins that way but as the story progresses you begin to realize that the novel revolves more around Helen, the audio book and it’s story of Helen’s life.

The book is about Hanna and Helen who are next-door neighbors with a great bond that stands the test of time.

As Hanna is getting older and is more concerned with boys and being a popular girl then having to spend time with Helen. Helen misses the days when Hanna would come over and stay until she had to go home at night.

When Hanna was a little girl, her parents asked Helen to keep an eye on her. Helen became a surrogate grandmother to the little girl and is still called grandmother by Hanna. Hanna learned many things from Helen, such as canning, sewing, and an appreciation for the wildlife that lived in their backyards. As there was huge fields behind the houses and deers were known to go there because they were safe from the hunters.

When Hanna was growing up she asked how Helen and Lon met and Helen weaved this truly romantic story of how they met but it was a lie. When Helen begins to realize that she is getting sick she sets out to tell her story in an audio book. She feels as though Hanna must know the real story of how they met. How will Hanna react when she finds out?

Helen is slowly dying and its really sad to read. When Hanna’s school realizes that she isn’t doing her community service requirement she goes to the school to see if she can do it with Helen. So the school has agreed. Hanna goes over after school for a few hours to help out.

With the progression of Helen’s disease (she is only able to communicate with blinking her eyes) Lon is having a hard time dealing with and watching his wife die slowly. Lon’s health isn’t the best either. He feels as though he is at the end of the rope with taking care of Helen and himself. What will he do?

This is a book with a message and the message is that true love never dies. It also tackles the issue of Parkinson’s Disease.

Note that you should grab your tissues cause this one is a tear-jerker!

About the Author:
Laura Wiess is the author of the critically acclaimed novels Such a Pretty Girl, chosen as one of the ALA’s 2008 Best Books for Young Adults and 2008 YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers, and Leftovers. Originally from Milltown, New Jersey, she traded bumper-to-bumper traffic, excellent pizza, and summer days down the shore for scenic roads, bears, no pizza delivery, and the irresistible allure of an old stone house surrounded by forests in Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains Region. Email Laura Wiess at laura@laurawiess.com or visit Laura Wiess for more information.

The Promised World Review

PUB DATE: September 2009
I have to send a thank you to TLC Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this tour. Thanks to Atria Books for sending me this book.

I had this book on my TBR pile for awhile and when I heard about this tour I had to take part in it. What better time to read the book then for the tour?

ABOUT THE BOOK:

On a March afternoon, while Lila Cole is working in her quiet office, her twin brother Billy points an unloaded rifle out of a hotel window, closing down a city block. “Suicide by police” was obviously Billy”s intended result, but the aftermath of his death brings shock after shock for Lila when she discovers that her brilliant but troubled twin — the person she revered and was closer to than anyone in the world — was not only estranged from his wife, but also charged with endangering the life of his middle child and namesake, eight-year-old William.

As Lila struggles to figure out what was truth and what was fiction in her brother”s complicated past, her job, her marriage, and even her sanity will be put at risk. And when the hidden meaning behind Billy”s stories comes to light, she will have to act before Billy”s children are destroyed by the same heartbreaking reality that shattered her protector and twin more than twenty years ago.

A love song to the redemptive power of books and stories, The Promised World is a mesmerizing tale of intimacy, betrayal, and lost innocence that will haunt readers long after they have turned the final page.

MY THOUGHTS:
I have to admit that Lisa Tucker is a new to me author. She has written four other books.

I have to admit that I was surprised at how much I ended up enjoying this book. The only thing I found hard to read was when Billy went to the elementary school. I actually had goose bumps. Living in a city where we have had two school shootings brought back a lot of memories. Which just happens to be the anniversary of one of the school shootings this past weekend.

With that being said the book was hard to put down and every time I did put it down I had to pick it up to continue reading.

The Promised World is about twins Lila and Billy. The past, present and the future of all those involved.

Billy is married to Ashley and they have three children. Lila is married to Patrick and they have no children.

After Billy is killed, Lila is grieving the lose of her brother. Her world basically comes crumbling down around her. She is having a hard time dealing with it and it seems like no one is there to help her. You couldn’t help but wish you were there to help Lila through this.

Lila discovers a lot of her twin that she never knew about, such as, his divorce from his wife, Ashley and that he was being accused of child abuse with one of his own children. She also discovers that he was very unhappy and couldn’t deal with his problems any longer. How will she handle all this new information on Billy?

Ashley is truly convinced that Billy and Lila had a troubled childhood and couldn’t understand that strong bond that they had. She thought there was more to their past then what they were telling people. Could there be something that they aren’t saying?

Lila has no memory of her past apart from what Billy has told her. Why doesn’t she remember? Is Billy telling her the truth? What will she do when she realizes what he has told her might not be the truth but made up stories?
