Glossybox July Edition

I was so happy to come home from vacation to find my July Glossy Box waiting for me. I was excited to find out what was inside the box because being away with limited internet access meant that I couldn’t see any sneak peaks of vlogs or posts.

The box was the standard box and nothing has changed in its appearance. The only thing I noticed was the description card. It was super glossy which suits the box just fine. I also loved how Montreal was mentioned on the card.

I am a little excited about the box and the products that I received for July.

Zoya Nail Polish**I have never heard of this brand before. Honestly when I first saw this shade I was a little bummed with the color and was hoping for more of a summer bright shade but once I put it on I kind of liked it. Not sure how often I would wear this and its a light shade. This is a full size product and it sales for $8.

Alessandro InternationalThis is another new to me brand. Its the Pedix Heel Rescue Balm. I really liked the smell of this and this is the perfect summer product. I have dry cracked heels from wearing sandles and this was perfect to use and there is enough of the sample to get a good feel for the product. The full size is 100ml for $19.95 and the sample size was 30ml for $5.99

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Sheer Solution
I actually had received the full size of this product when I went to the Glossybox event here in Montreal and have used it and really like it. I have thick hair and frizz so finding something that will work without drying my hair is important and this was perfect because it was light weight and it did fight frizz. The full size is 60ml for $14.99 and the sample that was included was 10ml for $2.50

(I have to say that I am loving the whole John Frieda line for Frizz Ease. Its perfect for my hair.)

Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer**
I was thrilled to see this in the box because I have been loving the Burt’s Bees lip line. I got Cherry. It was a nice shade and I like the texture of it. It was a full size product  2.6g for $5.99

Dove Softening Creme Body Wash**
This is a limited edition item and I was excited to try it. Dove is one of my go to soaps/body washes. I loved that it lathered really well and I liked the smell of it. Its your typical Dove scent. I didn’t really notice a difference in my skin in a week but I still enjoyed using this daily. This is also another full size product 200ml for $5.99

BeautySoClean Sanitizer wipes
I received this I believe in my first box and again at the Glossy Box event in Montreal. I haven’t used them yet but I am thinking I might just give them a try. The wipes sanitizer your make up to get rid of the gunk that gets on your make up without you really noticing it. The wipes sell for 48 pack for $12.50 and I got 4 wipes for $1.04

I am okay with this box its not a favorite but I am excited to try the new to me products and the products that I know and enjoy. I did get three full size products and those basically paid for the box this month.

I am curious to see if August’s box will be a fall themed box or not. What do you think?

(Give Away & Review) Back to School Labelling

Its hard to believe but there is only roughly three weeks left of summer vacation before Michael goes back to school. Here in Quebec the kids roughly go back to school the last week of August compared to other provinces which start after Labor Day weekend.

I have a confussion to make and I really hope that I am not the only parent who does this (please let me know) but I start my back to school shopping right after school finishes. Michael comes home with a partial list of supplies (this is mainly the basic list) that he will need for when school starts and then will come home with another list from the teacher (an Oh BTW we forgot to add these to the previous list).

The reason I started shopping right away was because Michael’s school finally teamed up with a local company that will package the supplies and deliver it to our house as part of this years fund raising for the school. Can I just say that that was a life saver. I managed to get a majority of his supplies this way with the exception of a few things. I am just waiting for it to come in now.

Another reason I started early was because everything has to be labelled and its a ton of stuff to label because its supplies for both French and English classes and everything has to be labelled. ( I will be so happy when he is in high school and nothing has to be labelled.)

When Michael started preschool he had a list of supplies he needed and I had used white labels and write his name on them which took forever until a parent told me about premade labels you could order online and let me tell you those have been a godsend. I love them and order these kinds of labels each and every year.

I have used another company for labels and found them to be getting a little expensive and was prepared to buy a labeler but then I stumbled upon an opportunity that I couldn’t resist.

I was given the chance to review Oliver’s Labels Back to School pack. If your unfamiliar with Oliver’s Labels well they are a Canadian Company and exclusive to the company is the Found It tracking technology on their labels. Which is optional when you order your labels.

What is Found It tracking you ask? Well its really simple. Its an online lost and found. If someone finds something you lost they log on and enter your code and an email is sent to you. None of your personal info is revealed to the finder.

When I checked out Oliver’s Labels online I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of designs they had, over 40! There is enough to suit the fancy of any boy, girl and adult. The designs range from sports, princess, space, animals, flowers and so much more.

I recently just got my labels and I was impressed with the look of the labels because I wasn’t sure what I was going to get. The labels were super easy to use and Michael loved the look of them. We picked out the sports pack.

We received the following in our pack:

  • 20 x Original Labels
  • 30 x Mini Labels
  • 6 x Shoe Labels
  • 35 x Stick-eez™ Clothing Labels
  • 1 x Large Bag Tag
  • 3 x Mini Bag Tags

For a total of 95 labels.

I was going to take a picture of the labels we got but sorry Michael’s name (first and last) are on them. But what is show above is what we got.

I really like the labels. They were well made and very nice. Michael loves them. He had so much fun picking out what he wanted and I noticed during the ordering process that I think you could order different designs within your order.

Sadly at the time of this post I haven’t been able to label any of Michael’s school supplies because I am waiting for them to come in but I did buy Michael a new water bottle for school along with containers since they prefer a waste free lunch so I labelled that and we have been putting the labels to the test with washing them by hand and in the dishwasher and guess what they are still stuck on the items looking brand new. So this says alot about the labels and I am sure they will last the year too.

I love the labels and I am 120% sure I will be ordering from this company again and passing the word on to all my mother friends telling them about these great labels.

Now I have some good news for you readers, Oliver’s Labels has allowed me to give away one back to school pack so that you can label your child’s school supplies.

The give away is open to everyone in Canada and the US with a valid mailing address. Sorry no PO Boxes.

The give away is until August 19th.

    (Meme) Sundays In Bed With………..#9

I was hoping that when I got back from vacation that I would have a new book to share with you on this  Sundays In Bed With…. post. Sorry for the delay in getting this up.

The awesome blogger behind this is Kate from Midnight Book Girl   not only is she an awesome blogger but she is was one of my roommates for BEA. YAY!!

    Midnight Book Girl

Sundays In Bed With….is a meme I’ve started to share the book we’re spending the morning in bed with, or the one we’d like to stay curled up in bed with all Sunday if only our busy lives would allow! For fun, take a picture of the book in your bed, or simply write up a post or comment below sharing your Sundays in Bed With book. Quoted from Kate’s blog

This week I am in bed with.. (again)

I picked up The Land of Stories : The Wishing Spell (book 1) by Chris Colfer at the Children’s Author Breakfast at BEA this year and I have been dying to read it. With its release this month I decided to pick it up and can I just say that I LOVE the cover. Although this picture doesn’t do it justice.

I am really enjoying the book and I am sure Michael would love to read this when he is a little older.

I am well over half way through this and was hoping to finish it up while I was on vacation but I didn’t. I only managed to read a few pages here and there so I am hoping to finish it up this week. I do have to say that I managed to get to Barnes and Noble while I was away and I picked up a finish copy of the book (a first for me) and I love it.

Hope your having a good weekend and that you manage to find some time read this week.

(Guest Post) Artie Bennett author of Poopendous

We are huge fans of Artie Bennett as you may recall we had Artie on the blog before promoting his picture book The Butt Book and out of all of the picture books Michael has this was the one he would read over and over again. He still giggles when he reads it. I even brought the book to school and read it to the kids in the library and they loved the book. They were laughing and giggling.

When I discovered that Artie was going to be at BEA promoting his newest picture book Poopendous I told Michael and this was one of the books he really wanted me to get. So I emailed Artie letting him know that I was going to be there and to expect me. Well the BEA karma gods had other plans for me and sadly by the time I got to the signing I was told that it was closed. Meaning there was no more books which I was bummed about and even asked if it was possible even to go and say Hi and that he was expecting me and I was told no sorry can’t do.

I walked away bummed but what can you do and it was only after the fact that I noticed an email from Artie letting me know that he missed me at the signing and aplogized but if I wanted a book there would be one at the booth well of course it was after BEA so I struck out again.

Thankfully Artie was super nice and he sent me a copy of the book signed for Michael. Thank you Artie for doing this for us.

Speaking with Artie he was very gracious and did a guest post for me which I am thrilled to share with you today. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy sharing it with you.

Please help me welcome back Artie to Cindy’s Love of Books.

First of all, I’d like to express my bottomless gratitude to Cindy for giving me a forum to introduce my pooptacular new picture book to her legions of readers. You may know my first “mature” work, The Butt Book. It was showered with praise and won the coveted Reuben Award for Book Illustration.

Cindy herself reviewed it and enthused,

“The book is written with clean humor that the kids will get and laugh it. This is a great picture book, which I am sure will be a big hit amongst the boys, seeing as boys seem to think butts are funny. I enjoyed reading this book with my seven-year-old and being able to watch him laugh was one of the best feelings in the world.”

    Thank you, Cindy.

While The Butt Book still has legs (and long ones at that), it was now time for my second act. I cast about for the perfect follow-up. What should it be? Should it be . . . naaaah. Or maybe . . . naaah. But then I had a brainstorm. Perhaps a children’s book in verse about poop would prove the ticket. After all, what more fertile topic could there be for one’s “number two” picture book. And there seemed to be a natural progression. When the word “poopendous” came to me out of the blue one day, that clinched it! I knew I not only had to write it, but I also had both the title and the final spread. So, just like with The Butt Book, I now sat down to write a memorable, stirring ending first before attempting any of the preceding verses.

I write in verse, and I love the challenge that this poses. But I’m also saddled with a perfectionist nature and therefore agonize over every single syllable. I tweak and revise endlessly until I get things just right. And then I tweak and revise some more. It’s important that my rhymes be strong and true. But perhaps even more important is that the cadence of the verses be musical. If the stress happens to fall on the wrong syllable, the verse will crash upon the ear. And since I’m going to be reading it aloud, I can’t have ungainly verses. They would catch in my throat. And that would be a sin.

It’s rare when a verse spontaneously emerges that I find fully satisfying. More typically, it will be the product of those endless rewrites, after many near misses. The reader doesn’t see the discards. On my website, ArtieBennett.com, I highlight a couple of my favorites in the Outtakes section. One outtake that I was particularly fond of went like this:

    Babies poop. Adults do, too.

    Even Winnie had to poo!

I was so fond of this verse, in fact, that I fought like the dickens to retain it. But it wasn’t meant to be, for reasons that I’m sure you—and Disney!—will deduce. I enjoy sharing my outtakes with children after my readings and asking them if they can puzzle out why this verse never made it off the cutting-room floor. I get the funniest answers.

I love to include a “chant” in each of my books. In Poopendous!, we have

    Rabbit pellets, raccoon tubes,

    Owl whitewash, and wombat cubes!

Can you see the cheerleaders leading this one during halftime? Now, had the wombat not been a prolific producer of cube-shaped poop, described as resembling rather pungent dice, I don’t know what I would’ve done. I would’ve been left with three-quarters of a great verse—and despondency.

I try also to slip in some internal rhymes when possible to enliven the verses. I was particularly pleased with:

    Poop enriches soil that’s poor.

Grow umpteen beans and greens galore!

And I always strive for a strong, animated opening in my books, for I know how important first impressions are. Poopendous! begins:

Poop is yucky, poop is foul.

Step in poop and you will howl.

To read this book, you must be strong.

Just hold your nose and come along!

This sets the stage for much merriment to follow. But Poopendous! conveys much more than mere fun. Poopendous! is replete with fascinating nature lore. I happen to have a fairly large fund of information stored up in the recesses of my brain from years spent bird watching and botanizing. Yet I still needed to do extensive research for the book. Thankfully, though, it wasn’t necessary to do any fieldwork and collect samples. Besides, my wife would have changed the locks on me while I was out collecting.

Along with gently imparting a natural-history lesson in my work, I’ve also added a large dollop of fun. Children and their parents often dissolve into laughter at my readings. And bookstores, too, are not immune. I just received this heartening comment from the children’s book buyer of an independent bookstore in California in response to my telling her about my new book.

“Guess what?!? We already have Poopendous!, and I have even been known to give spontaneous in-store readings. What a delightful, hilarious, informative, fascinating book. Thank you for writing to us, and for writing such great books! Best of luck to you, and hip-poop-hooray!”

Poopendous! is beginning to get some very favorable attention, and not just from my relatives. A recent review of Poopendous! declared that I have “discovered the secret to get today’s kids to read books.” And a brand-new review in the Huffington Post proclaimed, “For anyone who loved The Butt Book, you must immediately go and buy Artie Bennett’s follow-up, Poopendous! It appears there is no topic Mr. Bennett can’t make funny and educational.”

It’s an absolute thrill to know that my books are playing their small part in getting children excited about books and reading, especially these days when there are so many coarser things commanding their attention. And to give the gift of laughter to youngsters is a blessing that transcends words, even words like “poopendous!”

    About the author:
Artie Bennett is the executive copy editor for a children’s book publisher and he writes a little on the side (but not the backside!).

His itch to write gave us The Dinosaur Joke Book: A Compendium of Pre-Hysteric Puns (currently extinct) when he was a much younger man. The Butt Book, however, was his first “mature” work. The Butt Book was showered with praise and won the prestigious Reuben Award for Book Illustration. His “number two” picture book, fittingly, is entitled Poopendous! What more fertile topic could there be but poop!

Artie was the youngest (at about age thirteen) person to originate and sell a crossword puzzle to the New York Times. He went on to sell several dailies and two large Sunday puzzles to the Times before he began college. It’s been downhill ever since.

He and his wife, Leah, live deep in the bowels of Brooklyn, New York, where he spends his spare time moving his car to satisfy the rigorous demands of alternate-side-of-the-street parking.

He is pleased to share the visionary promise of Poopendous! with a wider audience.

Visit ArtieBennett.com before someone else does!

I want to send out a huge thank you to Artie for taking the time out to do this guest post for me and being so gracious with the comment you made and for the book. We love it.

Check back tomorrow for my review on the book.

(Review) Shocked that I read this one

Title: Bared To You (book 1 in A Crossfire series)
    Author: Sylvia Day
    Publisher: Penguin
    Pages: 352
    Pub Date: June 2012

Source: I received this book from Penguin Canada for review. This was sent unsolicated.

    About the book:
Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness…

He was beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white-hot. I was drawn to him as I’d never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily…

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other’s most private wounds… and desires.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn’t tear us apart..

    Photobucket

I have to say that I knew nothing about this book before receiving it and I have to say it was sent  unsolicated.

My first introduction to the book was probably a few weeks before receiving the book when I got a little envelope in the mail from Penguin and all that was inside the envelope was a little business card that said #50ShadesHotter and a pair of silver cuff links. At first I thought that was rather odd and grew curious about it so I went to the Penguin website and put in 50 Shades in the search and only four items came up. One of them was this book and I could see that the cuff links I got were similar to what was on the cover so I presumed it was this book.

I have to say that marketing for this book was fantastic and I love getting a little swag item that goes with the book. The cuff links were very nice.

Shortly after wards I got the book to review and I was interested in it. I do have to say that the writing is much better in this then the 50 Shades series. I could see some similarities in the book but for me the characters were more related able and believable then in 50 Shades.

This is being pushed as if you like 50 Shades you will love this and I have to say I was expecting a 50 Shades book was surprised. This was so much better then 50 Shades. I read it practically in one sitting and yes I did the same thing I did with 50 Shades, I put it in my leather hold cause god forbid someone see me read this. LOL

I enjoyed this book and so much more then the other books. Bared to You is about Eva and Gideon and its told in Eva’s point of view. Perhaps the second book will be told in Gideon’s point of view.

So Eva has moved to NYC (I loved the location references and it made me long for NYC again) from the West Coast with her BFF Carey (who is bi). He is an actor and will basically do anything it takes to become famous and when I say he will do anything its so true. We find out that Eva’s stepfather is rich and has taken it upon himself to take care of Eva and that includes paying for her apartment. You quickly can see that Eva has some kind of baggage but you don’t know what it is right away.

The story moved along really quickly and I found it to be a page turner and was constantly reading to find out what was going to happen.

When Gideon was introduced I have to say that I actually liked him so much more then the other guy. I thought he spoke his age and he was so much more believable. With that being said I have to say that their overall actions were. Both Eva and Gideon came off as stalkerish in my opinion. I mean he knows things about Eva that no one should really know about a person without them telling you. As for Eva she resorts to using google to get alerts about Gideon. I mean really who does that?

Slowly as the book progress we uncover more of the demons that trouble these two characters. I felt bad for Eva when I read what she went through. I would be interested to see what happens in the next book.

This was the first time I read any of Sylvia’s books and I had to admit that I am kind of curious about book two which is called Reflected In You and its scheduled to release in October 2012. I am hoping I will enjoy it but you never know.

I do have to say that I did recommend this to friends who had read 50 Shades and I was told that they loved this one more and they can’t wait for book two to come out.

Thanks Penguin Canada for sending me this to review.

Did anyone else read this? What did you think?

(Review) Reading Something I Never Thought I Would….

Titles: Fifty Shades of Grey (Book 1), Fifty Shades Darker (book 2) and Fifty Shades Freed (book 3)
    Author E.L James
    Pub Date: April 2012
    Publisher: Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group
    Pages: 528, 544 and 592

    Source: Bought the books
    Photobucket

I decided not to put the book description in on the above books only because you probably all know about the books by now that has taken the world by storm and I decided to put the reviews into one post.

When I first heard about these books I knew this wouldn’t be something I wanted to read because honestly this isn’t my genre of interest and something that didn’t really appeal to me well let me tell you that quickly changed because Rachel from ParaJunkee was doing a read along for the first book and I was laughing at her recap of the book and by the time Rachel got to chapter 16 (I believe) I was hooked and had to pick up the first book.

I have to say that I basically breezed through the first book and I admit that I read it over a two day span and it was so funny because I have a leather jacket for books and I put it on that one because I didn’t want anyone to know I was reading it and I was home reading it LOL

I was totally sucked into the book and the storyline. I didn’t like Christian at first because for me his voice was that of a much older person and he didn’t seem like a real believable character especially when its told he was 28 so that put me off of him for a bit. Although gradually I began to over look him and started to like him.

As for Ana, I liked her and honestly you could see that she was more then determined to try and change him. You could also see how she could easily get sucked into that world Christina loves. She never gave up on him and was determined to find out the secrets of his past.

Has this ever happened to anyone (and I don’t mean specifically these books) where you read the first book in the series and the next thing you are wanting the next book? Its like going through withdrawals. You literally need the next book NOW!!!! That is what happened to me. After reading the first book I was literally needing a fix and contemplating how I could get in and out of Costco quickly on the weekend. You all know how busy Costco is on the weekend.

So I wanted until Monday and let me tell you after dropping Michael off at school I literally rushed to the bank and Tims (to get a coffee) and wait until Costco opened so I could grab book two and I wasn’t going to pick up the third book because I was told its not as good but I didn’t want to be going through this all again so I picked it up.

The second book was just like the first one and I admit I read it in one day. I literally started it when I got home and finished just a few minutes before I had to get Michael from the bus stop. It sucked me and I needed to know what was going on. As the books are progressing I admit that I like Christian more and more and I could totally see how Ana would get sucked in.

That night I had started the third book and OMG I was forcing myself to read it. I really think that the author could have wrapped the whole story line into two books. I didn’t enjoy it and the storyline was getting to me. Could it have been an overload? I don’t know what it was but I ended up abandoning it and started to read other things instead.

Well fast forward to BEA in June and hearing about the book Fifty Shades of Early Grey which is a parady of the series. Yes I admit I stood in line to get a signed copy of it. It was so funny standing in line because everyone who walked by knew what line you were in and I have to say that I wasn’t the only one standing in line for this book there was a huge line up.

Meeting the author of Fifty Shades of Earl Grey was so fun and he asked if I had read the books and I told him I read the first two and was having a hard time finishing the third well he told me I had to finish it to make sense of his book so I came home and read the third book and I have to say it wasn’t my favorite and felt like I was forcing myself to read it.

Would I have read these books had I not read ParaJunkee’s read along ? Probably not because like I said this isn’t my genre of interest and had no interest in reading them. Would I recommend this series? Hmm probably not unless I knew the person liked this genre of books.

I do have to say that I have friends who read the books and loved them and are now reading other books in this genre. But for me I can’t see me buying other books like this.

Have you read them? What do you think of them?
