Guest Post/ Snatchabook authors Helen and Thomas Docherty

I just read and reviewed the most adorable children’s picture book for the blog today. I was actually lucky enough to get an advance copy at BEA earlier this year. It was the most adorable picture book.

So I want to thank Helen & Tom for taking the time out of their very busy schedules to do this for me. Thank you so very much for doing this for me and I can’t wait to share my love of the book with everyone.

After reading the book  I wondered what the inspiration was behind the character of The Snatchabook but he is just too cute and I am so happy that Helen answered my question about it. She was even gracious enough to send a sketch. What do you think?

Inspiration behind the character of The Snatchabook

Helen: I have always been drawn to characters that transgress in some way – characters that are flawed, but not beyond redemption. Dr Seuss’s The Grinch Who Stole Christmas has always been one of my favorite children’s books, and was definitely an influence in the creation of the Snatchabook (although they are, of course, very different characters). I am also interested in outsiders, and how their arrival impacts on a community (a theme also explored in our next book, Abracazebra).

The idea of a book thief who steals children’s bedtime stories popped into my head at the end of a long day of trying (and failing) to think up interesting storylines. A book cruncher? A book snatcher? No, a Snatchabook! Almost immediately, I saw the potential to develop the story as a mystery with plenty of suspense, a brave heroine and a twist in the tale – namely, that the Snatchabook is just a pitiful little creature, whose motivation for stealing all the books is simply that is he is desperate to be read to; to be included in the cosy bedtime world of Burrow Down. When you read to your own children and see their faces light up when they’re listening to a good story, the idea of any child being excluded from that experience is almost unbearable.

Tom and I had a lot of fun developing the character of the Snatchabook visually. I had an image in my head of a sort of bush baby with long, delicate wings and a long tail, and Tom set to work drawing sketches. He interpreted it so brilliantly that it looked like a creature that already existed. Here are his earliest sketches:

Dreaming Anastasia Review

PUB DATE: September 1, 2009

Thanks to Paul from Sourcebooks for sending me a copy of Dreaming Anastasia.

I found two different covers online for the book.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
What really happened to Anastasia Romanov?

Anastasia Romanov thought she would never feel more alone than when the gunfire started and her family began to fall around her. Surely the bullets would come for her next. But they didn’t. Instead, two gnarled old hands reached for her. When she wakes up she discovers that she is in the ancient hut of the witch Baba Yaga, and that some things are worse than being dead.

In modern-day Chicago, Anne doesn’t know much about Russian history. She is more concerned about getting into a good college?until the dreams start. She is somewhere else. She is someone else. And she is sharing a small room with a very old woman. The vivid dreams startle her, but not until a handsome stranger offers to explain them does she realize her life is going to change forever. She is the only one who can save Anastasia. But, Anastasia is having her own dreams?

MY THOUGHTS:

I love discovering debut authors and discovering Joy Preble was great. The book was everything I thought it would be and I was not disappointed at all.

I have to admit that before I start a book I always try to find out as much info as I can on the book and I have to admit I was really surprised when I found out that the book is based on real life events of the Romanov’s. I remember hearing about them but it was something I never pursued until I read this book and I think that I might be looking more into the Romanov’s now.

With that being said even if you have no idea who the Romanov’s were you won’t be lost in reading this book. Joy does a great job in telling the story and embracing the Romanov’s and the what they left behind. Plus she adds a little kick to the story.

The story is told from three different perspectives (Anastasia, Anne and Ethan) it’s all laid out very well and easy to understand. Its told in time frames of a week ago, present day and three months ago. Included in the story is some letters written by Anastasia.

The story takes place in the forest, (past) Chicago and Budapest, Hungary.

The chapters were short and the book was a quick read but I found myself wanting to take my time reading this and to take everything in. The book kept you drawn to the story and made you want to continue reading to find out what would happen next.

The main character Anne is having these weird and unusual, reoccurring dreams that she can’t explain. She is dreaming of a little girl in a beautiful white dress that has blood spattered on it and the little girl is watching as her family is being murdered one by one. The little girl is then being scooped up by a giant pair of hands.

The dreams don’t really have Anne worried. She is more worried about getting into a good college. Could it be the stress that is making her dream these dreams?

The other main character in the book is Ethan and he has been looking for Anne. Anne could possibly be the girl that could help Ethan rescue the Grand Duchess Anastasia. We discover that Anastasia has been kept basically like a prisoner for many many years by a witch called Baba Yaga. (I laughed when I came to that part. Who couldn’t love a witch with that name Baba Yaga?)

Ethan has to try and convince Anne to accept her destiny. Anne doesn’t really have a choice because meeting Ethan has caused events to be set in motion that have been idle for hundreds of years and its now getting ready to play out. Anne has the feeling she can’t trust Ethan but not sure why. (Gut Instinct) She decides that they both need to work together and put aside any feelings that they have to do what they need to do.

As you are reading the book you hope that Anne will accept her powers and let destiny take its path. Will she be able to rescue Anastasia in time? What will happen if she can’t?

I really enjoyed reading this book and will be checking out the story on the Romanov’s and any other future books by Joy. If you are looking for a great book then let me suggest this to you. Even though its a YA book I am sure adults would enjoy the storyline of the book.

Dreaming Anastasia Tour

PUB DATE: September 2009

ABOUT THE BOOK:
—Dreaming Anastasia by Joy Preble—
What would you do if your nightmare turned out to be more than just a dream—and the only way to stop it was to believe the impossible?

Anastasia Romanov knows she should be dead; she watched her family fall in a hail of gunfire. Instead, something, or someone, saved her. Trapped and scared in a magical hut with a witch who may be friend or foe, she begins to come to grips with the truth about her situation: that some fates are WORSE than death.

In her dreams, sixteen year old Anne Michaelson is somewhere else. She is someone else. The dreams feel as real as her waking life and they terrify her. This is not good for her social life! Aside from that, Anne thinks her life is pretty ordinary – until she runs into handsome, mysterious, and (okay) annoying Ethan on her way to chemistry class. Now Anne has powers she doesn’t understand, a history-altering mission she doesn’t want, and a growing attraction to a blue-eyed stranger that seems to be stalking her! And when Ethan realizes that Anne is the girl he’s been searching for, things start to get a little surreal! Despite her skepticism and reluctance, Anne quickly realizes that you don’t need to be imprisoned to be trapped! Stir in the doomed Duchess Anastasia, who is not quite as dead as the history books say, and the Baba Yaga, a legendary witch from Russian folklore, and you’ve got Dreaming Anastasia by debut novelist Joy Preble.

This contemporary YA fantasy alternates between the voices of Anne, Ethan, and Anastasia as they try to decipher what is going on, and who they can trust–which becomes difficult when you have secrets going back nearly 100 years.

Joy Preble’s experience with Russian legends developed through her crazy maternal grandmother, who had been one of TWENTY children! The story goes that her grandmother’s family didn’t even notice when she ran off to America at sixteen, married badly, raised four children on her own and was the least grandmotherly of grandmothers a girl could ever hope for (despite her amusing and insane tales of the Bolsheviks and tsars). No warm and fuzzies there, only admonitions for Joy to eat her vegetables so she would be strong enough to survive the impending pogroms!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Joy Preble grew up in Chicago (the setting for Dreaming Anastasia) though she moved to Texas and inexplicably began listening to country music, which she claims she didn’t like until then. She has an English degree from Northwestern University and she teaches English to high school kids. Dreaming Anastasia is her first novel. She can be found online at http://www.joypreble.com/.

You can check out the other blogs that Joy will be making an appearance.

Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse Review

PUB DATE: September 9, 2009

Thank you to Paul at Source Books for sending me an ARC of Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse and also for allowing me to be part of the virtual tour of the book. Please check previous post for all the other blogs hosting this tour.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In a bustling metropolis where magic is outlawed, a six-year-old child is found inside a locked bank vault. A scrap of paper reveals his name: Bran Hambric. The child remembers nothing of his life before the vault. Only magic could have done this. But why would any mage risk breaking the law to place a child in a bank vault?

Eight years later the City of Dunce has forgotten about Bran. Even his foster parents don’t seem to know he exists. But there are those who have been watching, biding their time, waiting to strike, people who know where Bran came from and why he was sent away. And they will do anything to get Bran back, dead or alive…

Welcome to a world unlike any other where the adventure of a lifetime is just beginning.

MY THOUGHTS:

This is Kaleb Nation’s debute novel. Apparently this is the first book in a soon to be series. Which I am really excited about and looking forward to reading.

I have to say that I loved the book and that it kept me drawn into the story and never knowing what was going to happen kept it as a page turner. I have to say that I am not sure I would have picked up this book on my own without hearing about it first. Although I am really happy that I did accept the offer to read it. It was really good and I will be recommending this book to people now.

Bran’s mother Emry is trying desperately to protect her son from a group of people who want him. She puts in him the trunk of her car and prays that he will get to Dunce but she isn’t sure where he might end up or if he will end up anywhere.

Bran is only six years old. He did end up in the city of Dunce and was found that morning in a locked bank vault. Bran had no memories of who he was or where he was from. The only thing that was known was from a scrap of paper with his name written on it.

Sewey works in the bank and he is the one who found Bran.

In the city of Dunce they have a law that is called the Finders Keepers Law and basically what this law means is if you find something then you are obligated to keep it. With this law Sewey is obligated to keep Bran and Bran becomes an unwelcome member of the Wilomas family. Bran is treated more like a servent that anything else along with Rosie who is Mabel’s cousin.

The Wilomas family is quite quirky with a mother (Mabel) who is scared of catching anything and everything takes all kinds of measures to protect herself. Balder, (8 years old) her son is a spoiled kid who wants what he wants and hates it when he is told no. Balderetta, (3 years old) her daughter can never be understood when she talks but apparently the family knows what she is saying.

Also the city of Dunce has strict laws against magic: No Mages, No Gnomes, No etcetera. When Bran finally discovers that he has magic powers he’s in trouble and he knows it. What will he do about this?

When Balder and Balderetta go into their parents room to tell them that burglars are trying to break into the house Sewey doesn’t believe them and sends them back to bed. Then Sewey hears a noise and grabs his gun and tells Bran he is to help him. The next night while Bran and Sewey are sitting on the roof they are attacked by a creature. Bran manages to find out that his name is Shambles and that he is there to take Bran. During the attack Shambles mentions the name Emry Hambric. Telling Bran that’s his mothers name and she wants him to come back. Bran has no idea what he is talking about.

The next morning when he goes to put the trash out the neighbor, Mr.Swinehic comes over to tell Bran he’s cleaned up all the garbage that was on his lawn (bank papers) and found a note that he gave to Bran. This note said “Meet me at midnight in Dunce to pick up Bran. Since I cannot save him, you must do it for me; and in return….” Bran begins to realize that this same paper matches the paper he has when he came to Dunce.

Suddenly Bran begins to question his life and where he came from. He begins to discover that he isn’t a normal boy that he thinks or thought he was. What will Bran do when he finds out the whole truth?

Who are these people that are watching Bran and waiting to get him? Where did Bran come from and why did his mother send him away?

I have to admit that I normally don’t buy a finished copy of any book that I read and review on my blog that is sent to me as an ARC but this is going to be one that I will buy this week when I got on my evening out with Donna on Thursday. I am sure Michael would enjoy this one when he is older.

Has anyone else noticed that Kaleb started writing the book on 03/03/03 and that his book is being released 09/09/09? Hmmm Interesting!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

On the third night of the third month in 2003, 14-year-old Kaleb Nation had a sudden idea that began the story of Bran Hambric, a novel that would take most of his teenage years to write.

Kaleb hosted his first radio show in Texas at age thirteen, and has since launched several websites, including http://www.kalebnation.com/ and http://www.twilightguy.com/. Aside from writing, Kaleb enjoys creating music and blogging. A home-school graduate and a former black belt in taek won do, he currently attends college in Texas and turned 20 in 2008.

Millie’s Fling Tour & Guest Post by Jill Mansell & Contest

Millie’s Fling by Jill Mansell is the latest book to hit the US market. Its in stores now. If you like to read chick lit and in the market for a really good book then let me suggest this to you. You will love it.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
He’s the best thing that ever happened to her. He’s also the worst. He’s Millie’s Fling.

From one of the premiere contemporary authors in the UK, here is a fun and romantic tale that proves the road to matchmaking hilarity is paved with good intentions.

Bestselling novelist Orla Hart owes her life to her friend Millie Brady, whose rotten boyfriend has just left her. So Orla invites Millie to Cornwall, where Millie looks forward to a summer without any dating whatsoever. But Orla envisions Millie as the heroine of her next novel and decides to find Millie the man of her dreams. Except the two women have drastically different ideas about what kind of guy that should be.

With Orla and Millie working at cross-purposes, and a dashing but bewildered hero stuck in the middle, the summer will turn out to be unforgettable for all concerned.

Here is Jill Mansell’s guest post. I hope you enjoy it. I asked Jill Mansell about the internet. The good and bad about it as a writer.

–> Hi there, and it’s lovely to be guest-blogging my way across America and Canada! Isn’t the internet incredible?

When I first started writing, everything was done by snail mail and phone calls, and research was a nightmare. Now it’s all here at the click of a mouse! I feel as if I’m making new friends all over the world. And it’s not only readers – it’s so brilliant to be able to talk to other writers too.

I’ve been published for nearly 20 years and in the beginning I knew no other published novelists. Now, of course, I’ve met many, but a lot of the time we interact by email, Facebook and Twitter. This week I’ve been contacted by 2 old schoolfriends, one now living in Texas, the other in Australia, and it’s still completely miraculous to me that this is possible. And then we have my children, both teenagers who simply can’t comprehend the possibility of ever losing touch with people they know. They’re right, too. In the future it won’t be an option. Nowadays you can trace anyone you want.

The downside of the internet, of course, is the endless distraction it affords. I am a writer, therefore I procrastinate. I have it down to a tee. I check my emails all the time. Then my Twitter account. Then Facebook. Then Amazon. I find out all sorts of things I don’t really need to know. I recognise a face on TV and wonder where I’ve seen that actor before. In the old days, I could puzzle over something like that for hours. Now I just press a couple of keys and there’s the answer.

There’s also Google Alert: never mind finding out about other people; what about Me, me, me?! It feels like being locked in the cubicle in a ladies loo while people outside the cubicle fix their make-up and gossip about you, blissfully unaware that you’re there. You have to be strong for this. Comments about my books are usually flattering, but sometimes, well, they’re not. That’s OK, we all have different tastes, but the observations can be cruel sometimes. The urge to metaphorically leap out of the toilet cubicle and reply can be intense, but it’s never a sensible thing to do. Writers have turned themselves into laughing stocks attempting this. You just have to take it on the chin and send thankyou messages to those who have said lovely things about you instead.

I hope you enjoy Millie’s Fling!
Love, Jill Mansell x

Lucky In Love Tour and Review

PUB DATE: Sept 2009

Thanks to Danielle at Sourcebooks for sending me the book to read and review and for allowing me to tour this book too.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

When hunky rancher “Lucky Beau” Luckadeau accuses spitfire Milli Torres of stealing his prize bull, she promptly shoots at him, triggering a feud that only gets resolved when they discover they share a steamy hot memory from a night long ago…

It was a night of passion that has always haunted Lucky. The mysterious beauty he seduced at a cousin’s wedding disappeared. He’s always been lucky at cards, lucky with cattle, and lucky with land, but he’s never been lucky in love.

Now Milli Torres has come to southern Oklahoma to help out on her grandfather’s ranch. A cut fence and a big, mean Angus bull in the pasture are bad enough, but then she looks up and sees Beau Luckadeau. Great God Almighty, how did he get from Louisiana to Ardmore, Oklahoma, and what in the hell is she going to do if he recognizes her?

MY THOUGHTS:
I have to say right away that I am not a huge romance book reader and its a genre that I don’t read much off but when I got Lucky in Love I was excited to read it. Not that the cover had anything to do with it. 🙂

The book opens up with some fences being cut between two ranches and a prized Angus bull being on the wrong side of the fence. Beau the owner of the farm with the prize bull comes storming up to the fence accusing Millie of stealing the bull and not knowing what she was doing and that she would be fired by night fall. He has no idea who she really is. Millie can hold her own and is pretty much in his face and shots at him with her gun. She goes on the fix the fence and gets the bull back to the right farm.

Beau is intrigued by Millie. She seems familiar but she denies she has met him before. She knows him very well. But how well does she know him? Will he eventually remember who that mystery woman he met a few years ago? What will he do when he uncovers the whole story?

The book was exciting and kept me hooked. I am really happy that I gave this book a chance and I am really looking forward to finishing up this series.
