Local Blogger Meet Up

Its seems like forever since I have seen Donna from Books Bound so I was really happy when we got to meet for lunch today (Thursday).

I was dying to hear all about her New York trip as well as BEA experience. I was only getting little snipets through emails and posts so I was dying to know what happened and to see how it was. It seems like this year was more eventful then last year.

Donna also had some goodies for me and here is what she gave me. Not pictured was a little black tote bag that she got at BEA. As well as the daily PW magazine. I absolutely loved reading it from cover to cover. Yes even though it was all old news. That was one of my favorite things I picked up last year at BEA.

Its hard to tell in this picture for some reason but Let your inner dork shine through is actually a pale pink tshirt. I haven’t read the Dork Diaries yet but they are on my list of books to eventually read.

I also got three books from her which I am super excited about.

The first one is After Schizophrenia by Margaret Hawkins. This not my normal kind of read but I was curious about it because my brother in law suffers from schizophrenia. This comes out in September 2011.

After Obession by Carrie Jones & Steven E Wedel. This was acutally on my BEA wishlist so I am super excited to read this one. This is another September 2011 release.

The Predicteds by Christine Seifert. This one sounded really good. This one too is a September 2011 release.

So if you were at BEA did you grab any of the above stuff? Anything you are excited to read?

Thanks Donna again for all these goodies. I can’t wait to read the books this fall.

Summer Reading Program

One of our favorite things about summer is when our local library rolls out the Summer Reading Program. This is Michael’s fifth or sixth year taking part and he loves it.

Although I must admit in the last two years its been a little hassle to register for the program at the library because before it was done in the morning during the week and I guess parents complained so they started the registration in the evening. Well last year I forgot about it and remember that night after the library was closed so we missed out on some of the summer programs and then this year was a little annoying and a few people I spoke with felt the same way. As I am sure you will agree with me.

This year I guess parents started to line up before 5pm and they started to give out numbers and were told to come back at 6pm. I knew that people would be there early so I went at 5:30, I walked in and was surprised that there was no lines. Well I found out through another mother I know from Michael’s school that parents lined up before 5 and were given numbers and told to come back. Well of course that was rather annoying because I was given a number and told to come back at 7:30. I was there at 5:30 so that I could do it in one shot and not have to come back. Well I went back and sadly the few things that Michael really wanted to do and I mean really wanted to do were filled up and he is on a waiting list.

I guess my beef is that they said registration started at 6pm and no where was it mentioned that they were giving out numbers before hand. Had I known that I would have been there for 5 because I know that there is certain things that Michael really wanted to take part in. I wish someone would have given me the scoop because we are always at the library and the staff knows that Michael always attends the things he is signed up for and if he can’t I always cancel far enough in advance.

Anyways onto the details of the summer reading program. Not only does he get a entry for every hour that he reads into the monthly drawing but all entries are saved for the end of summer reading party for a chance to win some great prizes.

Thankfully they have one for the family as well and for five hours we get a ticket and it goes into the family drawing at the end of the summer for some great prizes as well.

This is the first year that our library has teamed up with the TD Summer Reading Club. I was super excited because the TD Club site is great because it includes booklists that go with the theme this year.

When I registered Michael he got a poster like the one pictured, a bookmark, activity book and sheets to log our hours read.

So this summer if we aren’t at the pool we will be at the library where Michael will be taking part in various activities.

To get Michael really in the mood for the summer reading program we set up a summer reading challenge. He said he wants to read the following books over the summer:

DVD’s we plan on reviewing:

These we currently own.

Here is my reading list for this challenge as well:

-Not Suitable for Family Viewing by Vicki Grant

These are all books I currently own that have been sitting waiting to be read so I will be reading them as well as hopefully the whole Maximum Ride mangas.

Now these are all the books we borrowed from the library that are for the summer reading program that we hope to read:

Graphic Classics: Treasure Island (Robert Louis Stevenson)
Chiggers by Hope Larson
Maiden of the Mist: A Legend of Niagara Falls by Veronika Martenova Charles
Becca at Sea by Deirdre Baker
Sea Dog by Dayle Campbell Gaetz Ill by Amy Meissner
Sea Surprise by Leo Landry
Salt Water Taffy: The seaside Adventures of Jack and Benny my Matthew Loux
Summer Reading is Killing Me by Jon Scieszka Ill by Lane Smith
Jacob Two-Two on the high Seas by cary Fagan Ill by Dusan Petricic
Eoin Colfer’s Legend of… Captain Crow’s Teeth
Little Rat Sets Sail by Monika Bang-Campbell Ill by Molly Bang

The Young Cam Jansen & The susbtitute Mystery wasn’t the one for the summer reading program. We grabbed the wrong book but Michael still wants to read it.

What are you summer reading plans? Do your kids take part in any summer reading programs?

(Review) The Undertakers: Rise of the Corpses

Title: The Undertakers: Rise of the Corpses
Author: Ty Drago
Pub Date: April 2011
Publisher: Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Pages: 465

Source: I received a finished copy of this book from the publisher for my honest sincere review.

About the Book:
On a sunny Wednesday morning in October, a day that would mark the end of one life and the beginning of another, Will found out his grouchy next door neighbor was one of the walking dead. When he turns around expecting to see something familiar, and instead sees something else altogether, it takes a little while for his brain to catch up with his eyes. He calls that the ‘Holy Crap Factor.’

Forced to flee his home and family, twelve-year-old Will Ritter falls in with the Undertakers–a rag-tag army of teenage resistance fighters, who’ve banded together to battle the corpses.

I think this is the very first zombie book I have ever read and reviewed here. The cover is very appealing and eye catching but I am not sure I would have picked this up on my own. Thankfully the ever so awesome Kay from Sourcebooks pitched the book just right and after reading it I have to say it peaked my curiosity so much so that I had to accept the request.

I am so happy that I did because I loved the book. I loved the writing, the action, the suspense and the characters. I think this book would appeal to both boys and girls 10+. The girl characters Helene and Sharyn were strong female characters and ones I think girls could look up to and admire.

Will Ritter is a twelve year old boy who was living the typical kid life until one day when he woke up and realized he was surround by zombies, his neighbor, the principal and even some of his teachers were zombies. This has Will totally freaked out and he wonders why not everyone can see what he sees. Is it just him? Is he loosing his mind?

Will quickly realized he is special and not just anyone can see zombies only a few selected ones can. They don’t know why but the ones he can have formed a special team called The Undertakers. Will is thrilled to realize he isn’t alone but quickly realizes that life will never been the same and he can never go back because he can jeopardize the safety of his family.

Will The Undertakers be able to take down the zombies?

I was amazed at how everything progressed through out the book and it left me turning to read constantly and I had a hard time to put the book down. There were a few questions left unanswered and after reading it I had to check out Ty Drago site and I found out that its going to be a middle grade adventure series. So this little cliff hanger has left me wanting more and I can’t wait to read upcoming books from this series.

There is also a site dedicated to The Undertakers and you can click HERE to check it out.

(Guest Post) Ty Drago

Today on Cindy’s Love of Books I am honored to have Ty Drago, the author of The Undertakers: Rise of the Corpses stop by with a guest post for us.

I asked Ty since he is a big science fiction writer why did he chose to write about zombies and not something else.

Thank you Ty for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this for me and my readers. Without further hesitation take it away Ty.

With a background as a science fiction writer, I’m sometimes asked how I ended up penning a middle grade “zombie” book. When I hear this, I generally sigh a little because THE UNDERTAKERS: RISE OF THE CORPSES isn’t, strictly speaking, a zombie book.

This is the story of twelve-year-old Will Ritter, who walks out of his house one morning to discover that his next door neighbor, his math teacher and his assistant principal have become the walking dead. But not the walking dead in the George Romero tradition. These animated cadavers are intelligent, articulate and clearly organized. Worse, to everyone but Will they seem to be normal-looking men and women. And, if that weren’t bad enough, these whatever-they-are’s are forever on the hunt for rare people who can “See” them for what they really are. And when they find such an unlucky soul, they kill them.

So Will has to run. Forced to abandon his home and family, he falls in with the Undertakers, an underground movement made up entirely of Seers like himself. Together, this rag-tag resistance army does everything it can to upset the “Corpses” plans for conquest — to fight the war that only they know about. And this isn’t easy, as the only people with the “Sight” are kids, which means that the oldest Undertaker is only seventeen!

At one point early in the story, Helene Boettcher (heroine and veteran Undertaker) tells Will, “Don’t call ’em zombies. Zombies are slow and stupid. And these things aren’t. You want to remember that?”

I once asked Jonathan Maberry, the author of PATIENT ZERO and ROT & RUIN, what defined a zombie. His answer didn’t really surprise me. In fiction, be it movies or novels, zombies are reanimated cadavers that, for reasons unknown, seek to devour the living. They’re mindless, or nearly so — devoid of reason, pity, mercy or even malice. He equated them to a force of nature, like a flood or fire: deadly, but impersonal. If you die at their hands, it’s simply because you got in their path.

I completely agree.

The Corpses are different. They aren’t dead people brought back to life, but invaders from another place entirely (World? Dimension? The Undertakers don’t know.) who have come to Earth with the worst of intentions. They’ve infiltrated all levels of society, thousands of them — maybe more. But, as they have no physical bodies of their own, they wrap themselves in cadavers, wearing them like “people suits”, until the bodies literally rot around them, at which time they switch to another.

This is both their strength and weakness. Corpses’ stolen bodies feel neither pain nor extremes of heat or cold. They can, if pressed, push their hosts to the limit, demonstrating terrible speed and strength. They also project a carefully crafted illusion of normalcy around themselves, an illusion that moves with them from body to body. To the world at large, they’re politicians, shop keepers and school teachers, It’s a trick that carries over to photos, videos and even fingerprints.

Only Will and his friends can See the truth.

Like “traditional” zombies, Corpses do often bite their victims, but this is more a cultural predilection than a matter of hunger. These invaders don’t believe in using weapons. Those posing as policemen won’t even draw their guns on fleeing Undertakers. Instead, they attack with their hands — and their teeth.

However, unlike “traditional” zombies, these creatures from another world are intelligent, well-organized and every move they make is deliberate. And their plan is take our world apart, piece by piece.

So, when I get asked that “zombie book” question, I generally reply, “The story’s more science fiction than you think it is!” But that isn’t the whole answer. After all, I could have more or less done the same thing with aliens, or vampires, or who knows what else. What made me pick the walking dead in particular?

The quick answer is that I don’t believe anyone’s done it before, at least not for MG/YA and not like this. But, on a deeper level, I did it because I like the idea of an “intelligent zombie”. Imagine seeing your mailman step out of his little truck, in his shorts and with his heavy letter sack, except that his skin in mottled purple, his eyes are sunken and milky, his hair is falling out in clumps, and bugs and worms are wriggling all over him and gnawing at his putrified flesh.

Yuck.

These creatures hold a certain fascination, no doubt about it. And I guess I wrote THE UNDERTAKERS: RISE OF THE CORPSES in the hopes of exploring that fascination. I wanted to give zombies more power, more presence of mind and — yes — more dignity! I wanted to make them, not merely an indiscriminate force of nature, but true villains in their own right.

I guess the readers will have to tell me whether or not I succeeded!

Searching for Montreal Area Book Bloggers

Even since our group started to meet up for our monthly get togethers we have spoken about trying to get something going with some other Montreal bloggers and trying to form some kind of community. The idea was always there but nothing really developed.

Then a few months ago while I was dropping off Laura from Library of Clean Reads prize win she had mentioned that she was thinking about doing something.

During Armchair BEA I realized that something needs to be done and I would love to meet other local book bloggers and get something going. So off went an email to Laura and I am happy to announce that Laura from Library of Clean Reads and myself will be working together to get this started.

We are going to meet up next week to knock around a few ideas. If you have any ideas/suggestions please leave a comment and if you happen to be a Montreal Book blogger please fill out the form and we will be in touch. Please feel free to share this link with anyone you know who happens to be a Montreal book Blogger.

I just realized that I didn’t leave a spot for email. If you could please leave your email address in the comments/question and suggestion box that would be great.

(May) Middle Grade Book Challenge

Are you reading middle grade books this month? If so, which titles and from which authors? Please share your reviews with us.

The rules again are really simply all you have to do is commit to reading 12+ Middle Grade books and posting your review and then come back and sharing your link in this post. You have from now until December 2011 to complete this challenge.

Just add your blog link/name to the Linky below. Your blog name and book titles will be fine.

Just to let everyone know I have given it some thought and I think I am going to go ahead and do a monthly giveaway. Please note it won’t be a big prize just because I will be mailing it and I live in Canada so shipping can get kinda of expensive so some ideas will be a gift card for coffee, a bookmark etc.

So the only rules are in order to qualify all you have to do is come back and link your reviews and for every one you add for the month of May will count for one entry into the bowl.

Have fun and happy reading.

It’s Monday What are you reading? #21

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

The wonderful host of this weekly meme is Shelia from Book Journey. You can check out her blog to find out all the details on how to take part in this fun weekly meme. I should warn you though that this can add to an ever increasing TBR pile or wish list.

Wow, its that time again for me to post another It’s Monday, what are you reading? post. The past week just flew by. I was super busy with taking part in Armchair BEA and honestly missing being in NYC and BEA.

In the end I persevered and realized that if I want to go to NYC and BEA next year, I will have to make some changes (perhaps a book buying ban) and make some sacrifices so that I can attend next year. Thankfully I have Tina from Bookshipper who is going to be helping me out and we will be rooting each other one so that we can save up for it.

I have to admit I didn’t get alot of reading done last week because it seemed like I spent alot of time online either checking out/reading and commenting on other Armchair BEA attendees blogs or on twitter. I never really realized how much time twitter can suck out of your life.

I think last week my current read was:

I didn’t finish this one but I am about half way through it. So I will continue reading this one. I didn’t pick this up at all so where I was two weeks ago is where I am now.

This has been mentioned a few times in this post.

I actually started this one and so far so good. I am really enjoying this and looking forward to the other three books that will be coming out over the next three months.

If I finish up that one I plan on starting this one:

So this is what I read and plan to read, what about you?
