Review/ The Essence by Kimberly Derting

  • Title: The Essence (book 2)
  • Author: Kimberly Derting
  • Series: Pledge
  • Paperback: 368 pages
  • Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
  • Pub Date: HC January 2013 & Paperback December 2013

Source: I bought The Essence when it came out last year.

About the book:

“Danger, dread, mystery, and romance” (Booklist) continue in the second book of The Pledge trilogy, as Charlie’s reign is under siege from the most unusual of enemies. At the luminous conclusion of The Pledge, Charlaina defeated the tyrant Sabara and took her place as Queen of Ludania. But Charlie knows that Sabara has not disappeared: The evil queen’s Essence is fused to Charlie’s psyche, ready to arise at the first sign of weakness.

Charlie is not weak, but she’s being pushed to the brink. In addition to suppressing the ever-present influence of Sabara, she’s busy being queen-and battling a growing resistance determined to return Ludania to its discriminatory caste system. Charlie wants to be the same girl Max loves, who Brook trusts, but she’s Your Majesty now, and she feels torn in two.

As Charlie journeys to an annual summit to meet with leaders of nearby Queendoms-an event where her ability to understand all languages will be the utmost asset-she is faced with the ultimate betrayal. And the only person she can turn to for help is the evil soul residing within.

This is the second book in The Pledge series by Kimberly Derting. The first book is The Pledge (you can click on the title to bring you to my review) and the third is The Offering, which I will be reading very soon.

The Essence picks up right where The Pledge left off which I really enjoy since I am reading the books back to back.

Charlie is still getting use to her role as the Queen and she finds it difficult but I think she is adjusting very well. Its alot to learn and she is still dealing with the essence of Sabara that is within her. I have to say that I love that Kimberly didn’t change the character once she became the Queen and she wrote showing how much of a struggle it is and that Charlie just didn’t adapt quickly into this position.

I loved how Charlie is still staying true and her wanting to make a change for the people. I don’t feel as though she is going about it too fast but I am sure their are some people of Ludania who think she is going about it too fast and they want her gone from the throne. The don’t agree with what she wants and that is too be expected because the people of Ludania don’t know anything else.

The Essence is mainly about Charlie going to the Summit to meet the other Queens of Queendoms. Charlie is nervous because she knows she is the youngest and worries about how they will except her, if they except her. Along the journey to the Summit, Charlie discovers there are people out there plotting to assassinate her.

Will Charlie be able to escape this assassination? Will she discover who is behind it before its too late?

For me this was a real page turner and I had to keep reading because I needed to find out who the assassine was. I thought at points in the book I had it figured out but then was completely wrong. I loved how the characters didn’t know right away either.

I also have to say I loved how all the characters were brought back into the book and more of a storyline was given to them. You got to know the characters much more and the story behind them which I love because when I am reading a series especially I want to know how the relate to the main character and story of the book.

I’m looking forward to finding out the history between Sabara and Niko a little more. Thankfully I have The Offering so I will be continuing the series.

I have to say that I am really impressed with Kimberly’s writing and I am pretty sure after I am done this series I will have to dig out The Body Finder series that I have of hers.

Review/ The Billionaires Demand

Title: The Billionaires Demand
Author: Addison Fox
Series: A Boardroom and Billionaires Series
Publisher: Entangled: Indulgence
Pub Date: February 2014
Source: I received an ecopy of the book to read and review for today’s guest post.

About the book:

Booth Harrison has made a habit of getting what he wants, be it a new addition to the Harrison media empire, or a better relationship with his half-brother. But meeting his brother’s new sister-in-law, Camryn McBride, poses a new challenge. The savvy CFO of McBride Media has a brain he wants to pick…and a body he needs to claim.

Camyrn has spent the past few years helping to rebuild her family’s magazine company, focusing on that rather than her disastrous personal life. But when Booth Harrison invites her to be the keynote speaker at a sales conference in Hawaii, she’s tempted to combine business with pleasure.

But meeting the billionaire’s demands won’t be easy, because someone doesn’t want a merger between them to happen.

I didn’t realize when I was reading this book that it was a 3rd and final book in the series and only discovered it when I was getting ready to do this post. The book can very well be a stand alone. There was no indication that this was part of a series which I have to say I really like. I will be going back and purchasing the previous two to read them.
The other books in this series are: Merger to Marriage and Tempting Acquisitions. From reading the descriptions of the books you get the feel as though they are stand alones in the series but each book has many of the same characters in them.

One of the things I love about being a book blogger is getting exposed to all kinds of books that are out there that you might not normally read or hear about.

I really enjoyed reading this and looking forward to reading the previous two books. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started reading this and I have to say I was really impressed.

The Billionaires Demand is based around the two main characters Camyrn McBride and Booth Harrison. They both work at their family magazine companies. Both are successful in their own right. They are also brought together because Camyrn’s sister is married to Booth’s brother.

You can instantly tell that both Camyrn and Booth are attracted to each other but Camyrn stands firm with her believe of them not every getting together because it will just get messy in the end. Can you just image what family gatherings would be like? So I could relate on why she didn’t want to pursue this any futher.

Booth didn’t let this stop him he continued to pursue her in hopes that he could change her mind? Do you think he could break ber down?

This was fairly a quick read for me and managed to read it over a few hours. Its a romance book and I think Addison did a great job with it because as I was reading it I felt as though this is happeing in real life with real people. There was nothing far fetched in this book.

Now I am off to purchase the rest of the series.

The Joys of a Towering TBR Pile
Addison Fox

I’m so excited to visit with Cindy today. She’s a voracious book reader which I can relate to since I’m rarely without a book (or 3) on me, and she’s got the most gorgeous website. I’m totally in love with the image in the page header!!

I bring up being a voracious reader because I truly believe it’s my love of reading that has translated to my goals and dreams of being a writer. I am a word junkie – if there’s something written in front of me I can’t NOT look at it, read it, think about it and take it in.

Recently, my friend and critique partner, Allie Burton, was visiting and she teased me about how many books I have around the house. But as we got deeper into the discussion, we both agreed how great it feels to have that ready supply of stories all around us. I also think it’s my love of stories that causes me to think in series/trilogies. I love to read interconnected books and when I imagine my own characters and their stories, I quickly see them with their loved ones surrounding them, contributing to who they are as individuals.

That was the genesis of my Boardrooms and Billionaires series. Three sisters – Keira, Camryn and Mayson McBride – are working to bring back their family magazine empire. The women know the business is their legacy and they’re determined to carry it on for future generations. Of course, three women who have the gumption to focus on their goals and dreams need some pretty powerful men and that’s where Nathan, Booth and Holt come in!

THE BILLIONAIRE’S DEMANDS is the culmination of the Boardrooms and Billionaires trilogy. Camryn McBride is the company’s CFO and she sees herself as the quiet, calculating (literally!) member of her family. She’s comfortable with numbers and spreadsheets and doesn’t quite see how her own subtle vibrancy is as powerful as her sisters’ more flashy personas.

Of course, Booth Harrison has no problem seeing Camryn’s subtle beauty – both inside and out – and he’s determined to show her the same. A bit of intrigue and a lot of sexy banter quickly puts these two on the path to something more powerful than either of them could have imagined.

So what about you? What draws you to a series? And do you enjoy revisiting with characters you’ve met in earlier books? Since I’m always looking for a good book, I’d love to hear some of your favorites. After all, a gal’s To-Be-Read pile can never be too high!

Happy Reading!

Addison

Review & Tour Stop/ Big Girl Panties

Today I am super excited to be part of the Tasty Virtual Book Tour for Big Girl Panties by Stephanie Evanovich.

I got to meet Stephanie last year the Harper Collins party during BEA.

TITLE: Big Girl Panties
AUTHOR: Stephanie Evanovich
PUB DATE: June 2013 (hardcover) January 2014 (trade-paperback)
PUBLISHER: Harper Collins Publishers
PAGES: 352

SOURCE:

I purchased the book when it came out last year and I was also sent a copy from Harper Collins.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

In BIG GIRL PANTIES, Evanovich introduces readers to Holly Brennan—a 32-year old grieving widow in need of a change. Having spent too much time mired in sadness and grief-eating, Holly heads out of town to settle her husband’s estate and try to move on. Enter Logan Montgomery—a personal trainer to the country’s most famous professional athletes who also happens to be sitting next to her on the flight home.

Holly’s mortified by the way she’s squeezed into the airplane seat, but as they chat, Logan quickly realizes she has a sharp wit and keen insight—a welcome change from the sexy but superficial women he usually dates. When he impulsively offers to train her at his private gym, Holly surprises even herself and agrees.

Holly discovers she’s a natural athlete, and as her fitness level increases, so does a new found confidence. When Logan finally introduces Holly to his best friends, baseball superstar Chase Walker and his wife Amanda (a feisty curvy woman herself), they instantly see what Logan doesn’t; Holly is knockout. As their smoldering attraction starts to spark in earnest, Holly and Logan will have to decide if their love is for real…or just about looks.

BIG GIRL PANTIES is a fun, sexy, smart, and exceptionally saucy romp—a must-have book for the summer and a debut not to be missed.

I was lucky  enough to get to meet Stephanie very briefly at a Harper Collins party during BEA 2013 and she was so funny. She spoke briefly about her book and after hearing about it I knew I wanted to read it.

Sadly it sat on my shelf for some time before I finally got into and after reading it I was disappointed I didn’t read it sooner because I devored that book pretty quickly. This was the fast read of 2014 for me. It was literally that good that I couldn’t put the book down.

I have to say that I love the newer cover much more then the original one. What do you think?

Okay lets get into the review shall we. This is Stephanie’s debut novel and she has a sequel coming out called The Sweet Spot. It will be out July  2014 and it will be about two of the characters from this book, Amanda and Chase. Which I am excited about because I would love to hear their story.

I am a huge romantic who believes in love at first sight and that things happen for a reason. I also believe that there is much more to a person then what they look like on the outside. You can be the most beautiful person but be completely ugly on the inside.

This is the case for Holly and Logan. They are both flying out of Toronto (Canada) into New York for various reasons and both of them got bumped from first class to economy. Logan is this tall dark and handsome guy who needs the leg room and Holly is the cute bigger lady who needs the extra seat. Holly knows instantly that Logan is disgusted with her and he has a misconception about her before she even sits down.

As the story progresses we learn that Holly is a young widow and has used food to comfort herself from the pain and lose of her husband. Logan is a personal trainer who works with some of the best in the sports world. When they leave the airport Logan offers to work with Holly and surprisingly enough she accepts. I was hoping she would and she did and never backed out once from their sessions.

Within months Holly starts seeing results and I loved the banter between her and Logan throughout the book it was always back and forth.

I have to admit that I was hoping for a love interest to happen and it did happen and it wasn’t instantly. I loved how Logan was getting jealous but was trying to rationalize why it couldn’t be. I was feeling bad for Holly because she was falling for him and she knew that it wouldn’t happen and took what she could. I am sure most of us would have done the same thing. Being a little over weight doesn’t always get the good looking guys you take what you can get even if it means just fooling around knowing nothing will come it.

I loved that towards the end of the book Logan realized that he really did love her and how he stopped at nothing to get her back and that no matter what she looks like he liked her for who she was.

I literally devoured this book in two days because I thought it was that good. I loved all the characters in the book with the exception to Logan’s ex, Natalie and the guys at the gym. They were your typical jerks of the book who make fun of fat people and base everything on outer appearance.

Thanks Tasty Virtual Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this tour. I am so happy to finally have read such a good book.
