 Synopsis
Eve Carlisle had a singular purpose – sell the rustic house nestled in the Colorado ski resort town.

Tortured by her husband’s betrayal, the beautiful divorcee refused to give her heart to another man. But Jake had been a happy surprise, with his mesmerizing blue eyes, warm smile, strong but gentle nature – as well as being incredibly sexy.

She had convinced herself the relationship with Jake was nothing more than a fling. After all, she had a life in Newport, with society friends and a lucrative career as a family court judge. Still, Jake had a definitive hold over her, and she was finding it hard to think clearly where he was concerned.

The demons of prior failed marriages haunt them both, and threaten to end things just as they are beginning. When Jake tells Eve he is falling in love with her, Eve refuses to believe it can last. Returning to Newport, the hollowness of her existence exposed, she must confront her fears before she loses Jake forever
.
Excerpt
He pulled her face to his and as his lips found hers, she accepted them. Eve could feel his need and desire. She pulled back slightly, breaking the connection. Jake placed his forehead against hers. “I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“No, I am. I’m just confused, that’s all,” Eve admitted.
Jake pulled his head back and gazed into her eyes. “What are you confused about?”
“I thought you just wanted to be friends, and that’s fine, but I’m not good with the friends-with-benefits thing; which sucks, by the way, because I would really like to be with you right now.” Her voice was hurried, and she nearly tripped over her own words in embarrassment.
“Wait,” Jake looked at her, a deep crease across his forehead, “are you under the impression that I only want to have sex with you?”
“No, I know you just want to be friends. But then you keep kissing me, and I have no idea where that leaves us as friends. I’m just saying that I’m not good at blurring that line. It’s apparently a failing of mine in this day and age.” Eve was completely uncomfortable with the conversation and was kicking herself for not letting Jake kiss her and seeing where it led them.
“Why would you think I only want to be friends-with-benefits?” Jake asked. He was completely dumbfounded by the turn of this conversation.
“Jake,” Eve tried to assure him, “it’s totally okay. I get it. I’m only here for a few weeks. There are a lot of fish out there, many of them younger than me that are able to offer you more than I can. And I’m okay with just being friends. I just can’t go back and forth between the friends-lovers role. It’s just not me.”
“So, basically you’re under the impression that I only want to be friends with you because I’m holding out for a younger woman. And you think that I want to have sex with you tonight, and go back to just being friends tomorrow? Does that about sum it up?” Jake’s voice elevated slightly. He face was flushed, and another crease burrowed into his forehead.
“Okay, I’m not upset. Why are you?” Eve asked, not sure why this conversation had set him off.
Jake exhaled loudly. “I’m not upset—I’m frustrated. I have no idea what I’ve done to make you think I want to be with a younger woman. Let me be perfectly clear—I am not interested in finding a younger woman. I would not ‘just be friends’ with you in hopes of finding a younger woman. I am not at all interested in having any type of relationship with a younger woman.” Jake took a hold of Eve’s hand, and tried to compose himself. “I have never met your ex, so I don’t know anything about him; however, I think he’s an idiot. How he could possibly let you go is mind boggling to me. The fact that he set his sights on a younger woman, when he had you, is insane. I would never—NEVER—keep you at arm’s-length hoping to find a younger woman. That’s not my style.”
Eve shifted slightly, trying to make sense of what Jake was saying, but still completely confused.
“Why would you possibly think that I am only interested in you as a friend? Especially after last night? I thought I made my feelings pretty clear.” Jake peered into Eve’s eyes, searching for anything that would explain where this all went wrong.
“You did make it clear last night, Jake,” Eve stated, “as soon as things became intimate— you left. It was pretty evident you weren’t interested in being with me in that way.”
The room went still, neither of them spoke for a moment. Jake internalized what Eve had said, and realized just how she could have perceived something that was in direct contradiction to what he had felt. Raising his head, he placed his hand at the back of her neck and sighed loudly.
“I am so sorry if I gave you that impression. It was the farthest thing from my mind, I can assure you. I can’t do the friends-with-benefits thing either and that’s why I left. I didn’t want you to think I was just interested in getting you into bed. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I am very interested in getting you into bed,” he ran his hand through his hair and inhaled deeply, “but I didn’t want you to think I was taking advantage of you. I like you. I really like you. And if I could figure out how to take all my vacation time right now, I would spend every minute of the next three weeks with you.”

Jessica doesn’t know how long it’s been, only that it seems like forever since she’s allowed her feelings to show. Ever since they attacked her city. Monsters which appear human but are void of any expression, and seem bent on destroying all signs of sentiment in others. Their lethal blades shred anyone who shows even the slightest emotion.
After her only remaining friend is killed, Jessica flees the city hoping to find a place where emotions aren’t fatal. A place to grieve those she lost and live out her meager existence. When she discovers the world of the emotionless creatures isn’t what she believes, the love it leads her to may also be the path to her own death.
EXCERPT
Jessica clamped her teeth together and took a deep breath. “I can stay calm if he can.”
Zach shook his head. “I don’t think—”
“Let her speak with me.” A deep male voice resonated through the crowded hallway.
Throwing on an emotionless mask, Jessica slowly shifted her body toward the voice. A tall male, whom she could only assume was the monster they called Blade, had managed to sneak down the stairs and stood mere inches from her. If she reached out, she would be able to touch him. The thought disturbed her and she struggled to maintain her composure.
The only thing she wanted to do was run screaming at this monster who had ruined her life. Every emotion that she’d been forced to hold in since the invasion begged to be launched at him. Grief. Torture. Outrage. Terror. All of it, she wanted him to feel. She wanted the rage to coat him inside and out, no matter what it would do to him.

BOOK 1
BOOK 2

I have lived my
whole life with comments from both, relative strangers and close friends
telling me I should write a book. People continually tell me I have an ability
to tell a story and make even the mundane sound interesting. (I’m personally
not aware of that.)
The thought of
doing this, was something I never thought I would entertain, because being
dyslexic, during my childhood and adolescence, I found it very difficult to get
past how to spell something, never mind how coherent the sentence sounded. So
writing a few paragraphs usually made me sweat.
As a child I
discovered coping strategies and developed my own ways of getting by, I wasn’t
stupid by any stretch of the imagination, but left school at fifteen without
any academic qualifications. I wasn’t diagnosed with dyslexia until I attended
university at the age of thirty.
(Both of my
children were diagnosed with dyslexia, one at the age of seven and one much
later, although, I could see my traits present in him, and both have excelled
academically in their chosen professions.
Thanks to the
invention of the computer and information technology, my world changed. I
learned how to communicate in written form effectively, not afraid to use
language present in my oral skills that were lacking in my written work, for
fear of spelling them wrongly, which gave me the confidence to write the books.
Had I, had to write a book on paper, I know I would never have finished the
first page.
I recently
discovered the joy of writing after a challenge by a friend, which turned into
three books. As I am constantly challenging others to face their demons, I
decided, after some persuasion, to brave it out and share the books with
others. I don’t have any expectations for them other than to tell the
story.
This was a huge
step for me, and took courage because there are so many fabulous clever people
out there, writing amazing pieces of work that sadly, very few people ever
see.
My work:
I have had the pleasure (and the drama) of working in The National Health
Service and in an independent capacity for Social Services in the UK for many
years. My work has been supporting many women, children, young people, and
families during this time. Sometimes, this has been at some of the toughest or
most vulnerable times in their lives.
During this
time I have observed the communications of all parties involved both, in their
relationships with others and how their decisions affect the subsequent
outcomes for them and others. I have shared in the births and in the deaths of
some of these people, and I never take advantage of the privilege my position
brings me.
People ask what
does the K.L. stand for K.L. Shandwick is a pseudonym. This isn’t to ‘hide’
behind, (I am not ashamed of what I’ve written), but to afford my clients the
appropriate level of confidentiality by association. So, K L stands for KL. I
am an independent author, who presently self publishes through kindle, but I
hope to have a print copy of my books shortly.

CHAPTER ONE (first half)
The night was cool and thick as it sheathed me in total darkness. The satin shorts and camisole that I’d gone to bed in were now damp from the moisture hanging heavily in the air. Holding my hands in front of my body, I blindly wandered around in blackness as I tried to find some kind of clue that would give me a better picture. My bare feet told me that I was standing on soft ground, the tall grass tickling my calves as I moved. It was possible that I was in a large pasture, though the clean, crisp scent of the air let me know that no large animals were near.

Thunder cracked in the distance and the ominous, coal-black clouds had even chased the moon and stars into hiding, not even the faintest glow giving away their location. It took a moment, but my mind was finally beginning to recognize this place. This was a dream world, one that I’d seen before. With every passing night, with every passing dream, I was able to travel further and further into this illusion as I tried to discover its meaning. I’d had recurring dreams before, but there was something different, disturbing about this one that seemed to speak to me. There was something that I was supposed to learn here and I needed to find it.

The wind began to pick up and I looked to the north, the same direction that I looked to every night. Lightning cascaded across the sky, illuminating the massive, empty pasture in which I stood. The momentary flash brought something to my attention that I’d never seen in the dream before. Two figures stood off in the distance, several yards between them, facing off. Even with great distance between us, I could feel the tension rolling off of them. That must be the dark, heavy feeling in the air that I’d felt: anger, hatred.
Thunder rolled again as the lightning danced across the sky. Using the display to light my path, I ran toward the figures ahead of me. As I approached, a bolt of raw, electric energy reached down from the sky and ignited the immediate area in flames. The swift turn of events stopped me short, nearly throwing me to the ground. The flames spread into a perfect circle as it surrounded both figures, blocking any further approach by me. Sharp chills cut through me from head to toe as I realized that one of them was fully controlling the blaze.

Now that I was closer, I could tell that the figures were women. One woman, maybe an inch or two over five feet tall, stood around fifty feet away, and to my right. Her long, jet-black hair reached just below her hips and whipped around in the increasing wind. As I studied her, I began to see a deep-red, transparent cloud, like an aura surrounding her. She was strong, very strong, and I could feel her overwhelming power from here.

Looking to my left, her opponent was roughly the same height; only her hair was frosty white and hung to her knees. This woman was much different. She was surrounded by an aura cloud as well, though hers was dark blue. Something about her called to me and it took everything I had not to trudge barefooted through the flames to reach her.

Rain began to fall and quickly soaked everything around us, though it was still unable to extinguish the fire. Movement brought me to attention as the white haired woman lifted her arms. The earth began to quake beneath me as it broke free all around her. She looked like a dancer as she maneuvered her body, forcing the element into submission under her power. The packed earth sailed through the air towards the dark haired woman, but she was quick to react.

In a flash, she completely disappeared from my sight, managing to dodge the attack. My eyes moved quickly as I focused to find her. My body locked up as my vision was suddenly clouded with the mysterious dark haired woman as she appeared before me, seemingly out of nowhere. Her dark, emerald green eyes and dilated coal-black pupils stared into mine, glinting in the firelight. Her raven hair seemed alive as it brushed my skin and sent tingles running through my body. Her flawless, olive-toned skin nearly glowed as she stood there, concern in her expression.

“Kailah.” As her soft, sweet voice spoke my name, I inhaled sharply. Though her mouth barely moved as she spoke my name, her perfect, white teeth showed just enough for me to make out four tiny, yet still elongated, razor sharp fangs. My heart fluttered rapidly as I wondered if this woman was the creature that she appeared to be, and if so, how did she know me and what did she want with me?

“Y-yes?” I stammered.

“This is not a dream, Kailah. It’s a warning.” She leaned in closer. “Run,” she whispered.

“Wait, what?” I asked, chills once again stabbing me like thousands of needles running from the roots of my hair to the bare, wet soles of my feet.
“Run!”
As soon as I turned to run, the dark thunder cracked overhead and the lightning began touching the ground all around me, trying to hold me where I stood. I heard a loud growl sound out from behind me, but decided not to look back. The earth began to shake again and my bare feet slid on the wet grass, the soft ground cushioning me as I fell hard on my right hip.

“Hello Kailah.” The new voice sent a shiver down my spine as I looked into the icy blue eyes of the white-haired woman.
Though her hair would have suggested otherwise, she looked no older than me: around twenty. Her skin was also olive toned and absolutely flawless, just like the other woman. Though, normally, one would look to the light as salvation and the darkness as hell, I didn’t think that was the case in this situation. Her crystalline blue eyes had death in them and I found myself backing away from her, toward the raven-haired beauty.

She laughed and the sound enveloped me like frigid water. “Kailah, you would choose the Vampire over your own grandmother?”

Before I could digest the words that she had unleashed on me, her attention shifted and the blue aura cloud surrounding her exploded into a barrier. Instinctively, my eyes closed and I threw my hand out as a large throwing knife bounced off the cloudy shield and headed for me.
“It is you!” she said with wonder.

My eyes snapped open and surrounding my hand was the same blue energy that surrounded the white-haired woman, only mine had a throwing knife buried in it. I couldn’t stop the scream that bubbled up out of my throat as the energy dissipated and the knife fell in my lap. What the hell was going on?

Her attention shifted again and with soft, graceful movements, a lightning bolt responded as it split from the sky and reached for her outstretched hand. She caught the energy easily before throwing it at her opponent. Another loud growl sounded out only a moment before something slammed hard into the barrier. That something, I realized, was the woman she had referred to as the Vampire.

Dark red energy swelled around the supposed Vampire as she pushed against the barrier of the opposing woman.

“Kailah! She can find you in your dreams! Go, now!” As soon as the order left the raven-haired beauty’s lips, energy exploded from her body as the white-haired woman was thrown several feet away. “This dream is a figment of your own mind but, make no mistake, this is a premonition. You are the key to ending this war and if she finds you, it will doom all humans to a fate worse than death. Leave this realm now and prepare your mind. Your life is about to change.”

Review / The Kelley Diaries

Title: The Kelley Diaries Book 1: Lawson
Author: Morgan Black
Publisher: Metamorphosis Books
Pub Date: February 2014
Pages: 30

Source:
I was given an ebook for my review.

About The Book:

Kelley Carson is successful, beautiful, and celibate. But that last part certainly isn’t by choice. Seems every time Kelley meets someone who might be able to help her scratch her physical itch something always goes terribly wrong.

Then she meets Lawson; a hot real estate attorney, who by the looks of him doesn’t have a problem getting ladies into bed, and she desperately wants him to take her home.

Will she make it through one date without totally screwing it up? Or will she go home alone again?
This is Kelley’s first entry in her diary of her dating mishaps. Look for part two in April 2014.

*This is a short erotic romance, not suitable for readers under the age of 18*

Photobucket

This is the first in what I think will be a series of ebooks. The next book is coming out next month and I can’t wait to read it.

The Kelley Diaries are told in a diary format which is always fun. This was a fun quick read which I have been enjoying alot lately because with a busy hockey season I feel as though I haven’t read alot of books and reading some novella’s makes me feel like I am still doing alot of reading.

Morgan has several books under her name such as The Fireside Series (Ablaze & Flames), and Afternoon Delights. She also writes under the name M. Black. This is the first time I have heard of the author but I think I would be interested in checking out her other books eventually but I do know I want to read book 2 in this series.

Since its a quick and fast read I really won’t go into a full review because I will give the book away but if your looking for a funny read I have to suggest this. It was no stop all the way through and it wasn’t that over the top with a far fetched story line.

This is more of a book for 18+. I couldn’t help but hope that Kelley would make it through her date without screwing it but you know how all first dates go. I liked Lawson but he is definitely not a one lady guy and comes off knowing he is hot and could have any one he wanted. Will Kelley be the next one?
