Book Club What do you think?

I was recently approached by my awesome next door neighbor (M) and a terrific library volunteer (W) at my son’s school to join my local library book club. I have to say I have always been a little hestiate to join and it was for no real reason apart from what books we would have to read.

I have been thinking about it for some time now and I can offically say that I took the plunge and joined today. I was at the library to return some over due books and just decided to sign up. I am signed up until December.

The time is sort of perfect for me as its once a month on a Wednesday afternoon.

Not sure if I will go to the first one (which is actually next week) because I have to take my mother to an appointment and it always tends to run over time and I am not sure how I will do with the first book.

The first book is:

About the book:

An instant national bestseller, this stunningly evocative, beautifully rendered story told in the voice of Ernest Hemingway”s first wife, Hadley, has the same power and historical richness that made Loving Frank a bestseller.

No twentieth-century American writer has captured the popular imagination as much as Ernest Hemingway. This novel tells his story from a unique point of view – that of his first wife, Hadley. Through her eyes and voice, we experience Paris of the Lost Generation and meet fascinating characters such as Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and Gerald and Sara Murphy. The city and its inhabitants provide a vivid backdrop to this engrossing and wrenching story of love and betrayal that is made all the more poignant knowing that, in the end, Hemingway would write of his first wife, “I wish I had died before I loved anyone but her.”

Has anyone read the book? What do you think?

Excerpt:

When you held your child for the very first time, you were likely brimming with pride and joy. Your heart swelling with enormous love, you’re swept away with streams of thoughts for what your child needs in this immediate moment—as well as plans and dreams for the future. You expect there to be wondrous adventures your child will experience, as well as bumps in the road along the way.

And that’s okay, you say, because you know that life isn’t always an easy journey.

But one thing you probably never considered was how an illness like depression could take hold of your child. And why would you? Up until recently, it was never believed that children could experience depression. Long ago, studies suggested that children and teenagers didn’t have the emotional capacity or cognitive development to experience the hopelessness and helplessness of depression.

Today, we know that children, even babies, experience depression. The clinical term is called pediatric depression, and rates are higher now than ever before. In the United States alone, evidence suggests that 4 percent of preschool-aged children, 5 percent of school-aged children, and 11 percent of adolescents meet the criteria for major depression.

Depression and Your Child grew out of my experience of being a clinician who specializes in the treatment of pediatric depression. I wanted to write a parenting book to raise awareness about depressive disorders in children, to teach parents how to find treatment, to offer tips for creating a healthy living environment, and to highlight important adult parenting matters such as self-care, romance, and well-being.

I also wrote this book because I have lived with depression since I was a child. As is the case with pediatric depression, my own depression didn’t hit with lightning-like speed. It was more of a slow burn, taking its toll in gnaws and bites before hollowing me out completely. After a suicide attempt as a college sophomore, I found help that finally reduced my depression. Until then, I accepted the sadness, despair, and overwhelming fatigue as the way my life just was. I never realized, nor did my parents or any other adults, that I had a clinical disorder. I’ve since turned the wounds from my childhood into wisdom and believe that sharing the textures of my experiences will help parents realize what their own depressed child is going through.

More than anything else, I want this book to offer hope. As a clinician, proper diagnosis and treatment can be life-changing and life saving. As a person living with depression, I have found successful ways to lead a full and meaningful life. I want parents and children who struggle with depression to feel this hope, too—and in these pages, that’s what you’ll find.

Pump Up Your Book

Why Blogging is Important

We are living the frenetic pace of the technological era. Families do not have time to make dinner from scratch every night. Farmers do not have time to go through the natural process of a harvest. The notion of patiently waiting to see results is slipping through our fingertips like sand drifting off into the wind. In a time when bullet points are much appreciated, I believe blogs are the up and coming reading tool.

We have become so accustomed to reading articles online and finding our answers through brief synopses, it makes me wonder if through time we will lose the patience of holding a story with over 200 pages of words, sentences and paragraphs? Being an author, I like to think that books will not become obsolete one day. I even like to hold a physical novel in my hands and turn the pages. But walking through many airports with an observant eye has shown me that perhaps I am on my way to becoming ‘old fashioned.’ For people are no longer holding books as they sit in the terminal waiting to embark on their flight. A plethora of laptops, tablets and smart phones have taken the place of books. Is it possible people are reading books on these devices? Yes, it is. But I still believe blogs are a necessary part of our culture. If you have a business, product or opinion to market, by writing blogs, people get to know you.

In the technological era that we live in, blogs are a mode of expression, a connection to the world at large. With that said, my correspondence to the world has also continued through blogs. After my book, “From My Heart to Yours: Based on a True Story” was published, the natural next step in my writing was to write blogs. My book was inspired by my own life. You follow the character through love, loss, life and death. In the end, she realizes we are all here to learn lessons. The art of life is how we deal with our struggles. And I continue to share the many life lessons and my path of spirituality linking me to the internal world on my website, MichelleZarrin.com.

The Alchemist AgendaABOUT THE ALCHEMIST AGENDA

When Charlie Rocklin and his company Gold Diggers Exploration set out to recover a 17th century shipwreck, they discover an undocumented Nazi submarine with enigmatic symbols. Ariel Ellis, a femme fatale historian with a mysterious past, proves that the U-boat contains the key to a formula more valuable than any sunken treasure, and more deadly than any weapon that has ever existed. In this globetrotting international adventure, Charlie and Ariel uncover an accelerating tempest of secrecy, lies, and agendas, fighting not only for the truth, but for their lives. Weiss’s debut novel is a lightning-paced story with surprises at every turn, and shows us that our personal legends may be more real than we ever could have imagined.

Chickens, Eggs, and Options…

The Alchemist Agenda was conceived nearly five years ago, though it was just recently hatched. Its long gestation was not only the result of a slow author, but rather a fast changing environment that is transforming how we produce and receive content in the digital age.

I am a filmmaker and had first imagined The Alchemist Agenda as a movie. I wanted to set the action and romance in visually striking locations that I had filmed in and wanted to return to, envisioning a big budget tent-pole franchise with ongoing adventures in the vein of Jason Bourne or James Bond.

But the harsh reality of how difficult it is to get something of that scope made these days set in. Movie studios are making fewer and fewer movies every year, and nearly all of the big ones are based on pre-existing material with built-in audiences such as graphic novels, (Batman, Iron Man, Spiderman), novels (Hunger Games, World War Z), TV shows (Star Trek), theme parks (Pirates of the Caribbean), even video games (Resident Evil). And since I can’t draw, design a video game, or build a ride, the novel was my only option. All I’d have to do was write one (something I had never done), then find someone to publish it, market it, and sell a few million copies (something I had no idea how to do).

But I didn’t worry about such things. I had written several screenplays, short stories, and articles, and I was excited and challenged by the prospect of my first book; the bigger canvas would allow me to delve deeper into the story’s characters and plot complexities. And so I went to town.

It ultimately proved to be an amazing experience, the writing that is, until I had to face the harsh realities of distribution once again: I had no idea what to do with a book, where to take it, or how to shop it—so I stuffed it in my desk drawer and forgot about it. Sort of.

I still couldn’t stop thinking that it would make a great movie. So I sent the screenplay version to Amazon Studios, Amazon’s new film and TV division, and they optioned it (which means that they pay for the rights to develop and make the movie). Over the next two years, I worked with them on several rewrites, and even produced a feature length motion comic for their unique development process. And because of the publicity the project received, a publisher contacted me to suggest that it would make a terrific novel. I told him that I would get right on it, and emailed him the manuscript five minutes later. Sometimes timing is everything.

More than ever, people like having choices in how they digest their entertainment, to read, listen, or watch; Cineplex or stage; print or pad; comic book or animated; audio book or large print; 3D or live. Storytellers now have options to create and distribute content like never before. Music software allows people who can’t play an instrument to produce songs. Camera and editing equipment make filmmaking affordable. And books can be self-published. The Internet opens the doors to the world. This democratization of content, however, does make it harder than ever to find a mass audience – and more likely to become a lost needle in an ever expanding haystack.

A former screenwriting teacher once said that it’s better to bring great meaning to one person, than to leave the masses empty. That sentiment stuck with me. But still, the old belief that size does matter came to mind in two obvious ways. One, the bigger your audience, the more money you make. And two, the bigger your… Actually, I can’t say number two in mixed company, but I think it was that same screenwriting teacher who also said that a character who acquires a lot of money in your story can get the girl in lieu of number two, and vice versa.

I don’t know if it matters what comes first – money or sex, novel or screenplay, chicken or egg – but I do believe that it’s always good to have options.

Happy Belated 5th Anniversary

I am hoping with September things will get back on track and I will get back into a normal routine again.

Over the next few days I am going to come up with an awesome give away so check back for that but until then Happy 5 year Anniversary Cindy’s Love of Books.

First Day back to school

I am late in posting this (even though its showing up on the right day because I back posted this) but I thought I would share with you this cute picture.

Today (Thursday August 29th), Michael went back to school and is starting grade 5. We are super thrilled and excited with the teacher he has for english but a little sad because he will have a new french teacher.

I really can’t believe that my little guy is growing up and will soon be starting high school (2016)

This year is an important year because the high schools start looking at the grade 5 marks for admittance. We will start to go to open houses to check the high schools out but as of right now we are looking at two. One is literally down the street from us (a mere few minute walk) and the other one is behind our house.

Wishing all my mom readers with kids going back to school a very happy school year.

Subscription Saturday/ Lip Factory Inc August Box

Welcome to another Subscription Saturday. If you are wondering what Subscription Saturday is, its where I share with you what I got in a beauty box subscription this week. Please note that all these boxes are purchased by me. I was in no way compensated for this.
I decided earlier in July that I would only post these beauty box subscription unboxings on a Saturday. There will be some Saturday’s where I will be posting a few unboxing posts.

This week I only got one box and that was one of my favorites, Lip Factory Inc. I have been with Lip Factory Inc since October 2012 and I honestly have to say that this is one of my favorite beauty boxes of them all.

For $22 per month, each month, you will receive your Lip Factory Beauty Kit containing 5 to 7 of your favorite makeup brands. Although your kit may include a full face of makeup products, our focus is on your lips! Your kit may include lip products such as lip glosses, lip sticks, lip liners and lip therapy products. Our products are chosen each month by our expert team of beauty specialists and makeup artists.

Each month your beauty kit, filled with well known and new brands, may also contain a surprise beauty bonus.

If you are interested in subscribing to Lip Factory Inc I would invite you to use me as your referral and my Referral Number is 27022. Your referral will go towards me getting a free box. You can go directly to this link: http://www.lipfactoryinc.com/#!subscriptions/con8

This month I noticed right away that the outer box had changed and I have to say I love it. Its the perfect box for Lip Factory Inc. Hmm I wonder if this is something that they will continue or if it was just a one time box?

I am always so excited when I get Lip Factory because its the one box I always try to avoid looking at spoilers for.

This month I also noticed that the product card was different to. I really like it. inside there is a brief description of the items and what they are.

The inner packaging has stayed the same  and I really like that they use a box because the boxes are great to pack things in if you are shipping stuff or giving some stuff to a friend.

When I opened the box the first thing I see is this:

Right away I noticed the Me Me Me Cosmetics Shimmer Stack in Gold. You can use it as 5 eye shadows or you can use a large brush to brush over the palette to create a shimmering illumination and definition to the cheek or brow bones. As you can see this is totally me. Its very neutral in colors which I love. I would probably use it as an eye shadow palette but perhaps if I was going away on vacation and was limiting what I was bringing perhaps this would come with me and I can get use of it as an eye shadow and blush. What do you think?

I really like the colors in the palette as they are nudes with shimmer.

Then I swatched them and I have to say I am not really feeling this palette. The pay off isn’t that great as you can see and this was after I applied the shades several times.

As you can see there really isn’t that much color to them. I literally ran my finger over the shades quite a few times. I am disappointed because it looks so pretty.

The next item I pulled out of the box was the Sweetpea & Fay Lip Joule. This is something I have gotten before and I like it. Its very pigmented so a little goes a long way in my opinion but its nice because you can lightly blot it for a liquid look or build it up for a more glossy shine. For me personally I would lightly blot it because its very pigmented and the color is not me at all. I got it in the shade Merry Widow.

I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the color. When I first put the drop on my hand I was like no way that is just not me and its too bright and then I figured why not try it out and well let me say I am happy that I did because I actually really like the color and that little drop did my lips.

When I looked back to get my next item I quickly noticed the NYX logo and was happy. Since discovering NYX in my beauty boxes I have grown to love this company and slowly picking up a few things from them here and there when they are on sale. This is the NYX Wonder Pencil. This is suppose to be the essential pencil that will fullfill all of my beauty desires.

You can do three things with this pencil and they are: conceal (flaws & blemishes), line your lips (so your lipstick doesn’t bleed or fade) and brighten your eyes (use along your water line). For me personally I don’t think I would use it for all three just because I would be worried about cross contamination.

A new name that I saw was the ColourU Cosmetics.  I have never heard of them before so it was nice to get something new and exciting. They graciously sent a matte lipstick in the shade Skinny Dip. I really like the shade.

I have to say I was disappointed in this. It looks so creamy and moisturizing when I opened it but it wasn’t. I had a hard time to swatch it as it was hard. The color is really nice when I did the swatch

I figured I need to see what it would be like on my lips and I didn’t like it. It went on hard and its wasn’t moisturizing at all. I didn’t like the feel of this and the color is not me. I had to apply it several timesand it started to bleed out which I didn’t like. I probably won’t use this and shoved it in the make up I use for Halloween.

I thought this next item was fantastic and it quickly went into my traveling make up bag. Its the White Towel Make Up Remover. Its great to throw in for an over night trip or to have in case you want to do a quick make up change while your out. Its a 2 in 1 wipe meaning its an exfoliator and a make up remover. Its naturally gentle and effective and it will leave your skin feeling fresh.

I haven’t gotten onto the fake lashes band wagon yet and I think that is due to the fact that I am seriously worried about glueing my eyes shut so I have avoided them but I am thinking I should give them a try since I have gotten quite a few pairs in various boxes. These ones are by Red Cherry and they are 100% Natural lashes. They are made from human hair. Its #47 in black.

So this is my August Lip Factory Inc box and I liked the box because I tried a color that I probably wouldn’t have othewise even though there was two not so great products. I am hoping that maybe the palette will make a good blush and perhaps I will give the fake lashes a try?

What do you think?
