One of our favorite things about summer is when our local library rolls out the Summer Reading Program. This is Michael’s fifth or sixth year taking part and he loves it.

Although I must admit in the last two years its been a little hassle to register for the program at the library because before it was done in the morning during the week and I guess parents complained so they started the registration in the evening. Well last year I forgot about it and remember that night after the library was closed so we missed out on some of the summer programs and then this year was a little annoying and a few people I spoke with felt the same way. As I am sure you will agree with me.

This year I guess parents started to line up before 5pm and they started to give out numbers and were told to come back at 6pm. I knew that people would be there early so I went at 5:30, I walked in and was surprised that there was no lines. Well I found out through another mother I know from Michael’s school that parents lined up before 5 and were given numbers and told to come back. Well of course that was rather annoying because I was given a number and told to come back at 7:30. I was there at 5:30 so that I could do it in one shot and not have to come back. Well I went back and sadly the few things that Michael really wanted to do and I mean really wanted to do were filled up and he is on a waiting list.

I guess my beef is that they said registration started at 6pm and no where was it mentioned that they were giving out numbers before hand. Had I known that I would have been there for 5 because I know that there is certain things that Michael really wanted to take part in. I wish someone would have given me the scoop because we are always at the library and the staff knows that Michael always attends the things he is signed up for and if he can’t I always cancel far enough in advance.

Anyways onto the details of the summer reading program. Not only does he get a entry for every hour that he reads into the monthly drawing but all entries are saved for the end of summer reading party for a chance to win some great prizes.

Thankfully they have one for the family as well and for five hours we get a ticket and it goes into the family drawing at the end of the summer for some great prizes as well.

This is the first year that our library has teamed up with the TD Summer Reading Club. I was super excited because the TD Club site is great because it includes booklists that go with the theme this year.

When I registered Michael he got a poster like the one pictured, a bookmark, activity book and sheets to log our hours read.

So this summer if we aren’t at the pool we will be at the library where Michael will be taking part in various activities.

To get Michael really in the mood for the summer reading program we set up a summer reading challenge. He said he wants to read the following books over the summer:

The Young Cam Jansen & The susbtitute Mystery wasn’t the one for the summer reading program. We grabbed the wrong book but Michael still wants to read it.
