I would love to win

Its not very often that I post about a contest but this time I thought I would. A fellow blogger Pam who blogs over at Bookalicio.us is having a two year blogiversary. Congrats Pam.

I got to meet Pam briefly last year on the streets of NYC when all kinds of bloggers were there for BEA. Pam is exactly the same in real life as she is online.

The contest is open from January 5th – February 10th.

Want to know what you have a chance to win? Well she is graciously offering a whole bunch of secondary prize packs courtesy of Harper Collins, Penguin, Simon & Schuster, Chronicle Books and Candlewick and they consist of children’s books, middle grade books and young adult books. Some of the great titles are: Shade, Slice of Cherry, Fancy Nancy books and items, Blessed, and Darkest Mercy just to name a few and peak your curiosity.

If you thought that was great well you haven’t heard about the grand prize. Curious to know what the grand prize is? Well click on this link to find out http://bklc.us/2y.

Yes its a Nook Color! I would love to win this because as you know I got an eReader this past summer and of course with in a few months they released a newer version that has wifi and its in color. How great would it be to actually have your book covers in color instead of black and white? I would have loved to have gotten that one instead. This would be great to travel with, with my seven year old son. He could play games on it, listen to music and read picture books or graphic novels on it.

If any of these peak your interest then hope over to take part.

(Review)The Secret Society of the Pink Crystal Ball

TITLE: The Secret Society of the Pink Crystal Ball
AUTHOR: Risa Green
PUB DATE: August 2010
PAGES: 315
PUBLISHER: Sourcebooks Fire

SOURCE: I received this from the publisher.

Description (from publishers site)

In a world where nothing is certain, a little magic couldn’t hurt…right?

When Erin Channing’s favorite aunt dies, Erin is bequeathed a pink crystal ball and a set of weird instructions. Granted, Aunt Kiki (aka Aunt Kooky) always lived “outside the box.” But now Erin and her two best friends are convinced that the pink crystal ball holds the key to their future—or at least the key to getting dates…

Consider Your Fate to Be Sealed . . .

Absolute knowledge is not unlimited; let the planets be your guide to the number.
There are sixteen ways to die, but four of them you will never see.
The future belongs to you alone. Other voices will be disappointed.
One rotation is as far as you can see. Only uncertainty lies beyond.

MY THOUGHTS:
This is Risa Green’s debut YA novel. She has also written two adult novels called: Tales from the Crib and Notes from the Underbelly. This is my first time reading Risa Green. Although I have had Notes from the Underbelly on my wishlist for awhile now I have never picked it up but that might be changing now since reading The Secret Society of the Pink Crystal Ball.

The Secret of the Pink Crystal Ball has been on my radar since BEA. I have to thank my amazing contact for sending me this to read. This was one of the first books I read over the Christmas holiday and I enjoyed it.

I am thinking from the ending that there could possible be another book to go with this but I can’t find anything online. Does anyone know if there will be a book two?

I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this and I had to finish it in one sitting because I was curious what would happen next. I even had some moments in the book where I was laughing out loud and almost cringing because you and I both know things happen for a reason and that honestly I think things are all planned out for us and messing with the universe is not good.

Erin is your typical teenager in high school living a normal life although to her its boring and does nothing exciting. She has two best friends, Lindsay and Samantha.

When Erin finds out her estranged aunt Kiki dies (strike by lightening) she is upset because for the past year she hasn’t heard from her. Her dad thinks she is crazy. Which she probably would be to some people but I didn’t think she was and perhaps that is because I had an aunt like here.

When they attend the memorial service, one of Kiki’s friends gives Erin a box. The catch is Erin must open it when she is alone. Hmm what could it be?

Several days later Erin remembers the box so when she is alone she opens it to discover inside the box is a pink crystal ball with a enveloped taped to the bottom with a rolled up scroll. Inside the scroll is a bunch of names and Kiki’s name. Next
she opens the envelope thinking its a letter explaining what has happened this past year but its not its only this:

*Absolute knowledge is not unlimited; let your planets be the guide to the number.
*There are sixteen ways to die, but four of them you will never see.
*The future belongs to you alone. Other voices will be disappointed.
*One rotation is as far as you can see. Only uncertainty lies beyond.

When Erin puts the pieces of the puzzle together she realizes that the Pink Crystal Ball can actually make her wishes come true. In order to that Erin realizes that she must think logically to solve the clues. When Samantha asks for help Erin realizes afterwards that for her friends things end badly.

I had fun trying to figure out the clues and I think that’s what made the book so enjoyable and it was nice when I realized I didn’t know the answers that Erin figured it out and I would say “Oh yea, that makes sense now.”

This was a super fun read and I am sure alot of teenage girls would enjoy this.

It’s Monday What are you reading?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila who blogs at One persons journey through books and coffee. If you haven’t checked out Sheila’s blog you really should. She is an amazing blogger. She was one of the bloggers I was hoping to meet last year at BEA but it just never happened.

I have been saying for a little while now that I really need to take part in this and for some reason I never do but I resolved that this would be the year that I would take part. I was going to start last week but I figured I would wait until today when I could actually share the books I have read in the new year and its a full week into 2011.

So last week here is what I read:
Real Mermaids Don’t Wear Toe Rings
Arranged
The Butt Book
The Samantha Granger Experiment:Fused

I also posted an interview with Catherine MacKenzie and a guest post by Artie Bennett.

This week I really need to read:
-Dead Frog on the Porch by Jan Markley
-Dead Bird Through the Cat Door by Jan Markley
-Frost Bites by Kerry Sparks
-Jen and the Frosted Friends by Kerry Sparks

This is what I have read last week and what I have planned for this week. I am only focusing on those books because both authors sent them to me for review.

Local Book Blogger Meet Up January Edition

I am always amazed at how fast time seems to pass so quickly but yet there are times when I feel as though its been forever. Case in point is the monthly meet ups. I know its only been a month since the last meet up and less since I last met up with Tina but it seems like its been longer.

This meet up we were down a few people because of commitments and I have to say they were missed but Tina, Linda, Amanda and myself were in attendance.

One of the things we spoke about was how busy our little tea spot is getting. When we first began meeting (three years this coming fall) there was hardly anyone there staying to drink just walking in and buying but lately there seems to be a full house each time. Thankfully we reserve our table in advance and yet to encounter a problem. (knock on wood) This is all good for the owner of the shop and its nice to see her doing so well but its sad at the same time because its getting busy and loud.

Its really nice and I love our meet ups because it gives me a chance to talk to others who share my passion of books and blogging because I have to say other friends and family in my life just don’t understand my passion for these things.

Whats great is that we aren’t only talking about books and blogs but we talk about life in general. Our conversations can get heated and intense but its nice because we all have different views and opinions and nothing is taken to heart.

Of course no meet up would be complete without talking about books. It appears as though paranormal is still a big thing for young adult books this year and it feels as though not much is coming out but from what I saw so far from so bloggers who attended ALA there is some pretty good books coming out this year.

Speaking of book conventions, BEA was brought up. I have to say right now that I am not going to be able to attend this year. Financially its not in the cards but I registered just in case because I have been entering all kinds of contest in hopes of winning a trip (and just for the sake of it I am putting it out there and if its meant to happen it will). If I am unable to attend this year I will be there in 2012.

As for our group not quite sure yet who plans on attending but I am sure whoever goes will have fun and bring back all kinds of great books for the group to read.

With that being said these are the books that managed to come home with me this month. Have you read any of them? Any on your TBR pile? Any on your wishlist?

From Amanda I was able to get Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel which several bloggers suggested I read and hoping to read it this year. I also got Little Bee by Chris Cleave and I am excited to read this because its been on my wishlist since it came out. Thank you Amanda for passing the books onto me.

From Linda I got a nice little surprise for Michael. He was so excited to get some books. He got Spy Kids #7 Superstar Spies and #8 Freeze Frame, Bionicle Adventures #4 legends of metru nui, bionicle mask of light and Shark Tales Joke Book. Thanks Linda, Michael loved the surprise.

From Tina I was able to get two books that I am really excited to read and they were Trapped by Michael Northrop and Cloaked by Alex Flinn. I am dying to dig into these two books.

This wraps up another meet up and how quick the time flew by at the meet up. I knew it went by quickly because I had to leave earlier then I normally do and I was only able to drink a pot of hot apple spice and a pot of hot chocolate plus my lunch. I would have loved to have sat longer and drank more and perhaps had a dessert. Oh well there is always next month right?

I think in the next meet up post I will share some pictures of the tea shop and of the delicious food. What do you guys think?

If you could….

I have a question for my readers, what question would you ask an author if you could?

I am asking you this because I am starting to run dry on the questions I ask authors. I always feel as though my questions have been asked before.

I have a few upcoming author interviews and I would love some different questions to ask. Any ideas?

As a incentive any questions that I use I will be linking back to your blogs. So not only will my readers see your question but also the author, the rep, the publisher etc.

(Review) The Samantha Granger Experiment: Fused

TITLE: The Samantha Granger Experiment: Fused (book 1)
AUTHOR: Kari Lee Townsend
PUB DATE: November 2010
PUBLISHER: Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
PAGES:208

SOURCE: I received this book from the publisher.

ABOUT THE BOOK: (from publishers website)
When you make a face or cross your eyes, do your parents tease that if you’re not careful, your face might stay that way forever?
Well, my parents said that if I’m not careful, I’ll turn into one of my gadgets.

I thought they were joking, people!

But—somehow, someway—I have become a living, breathing, walking piece of technology. Apparently my head now has a built-in GPS and my palm is equipped with talking and texting capabilities—just like my cell phone!

Now I’m a techno-superhero with powers that seem to have a mind of their own. And, in my case, keeping a secret identity is harder than it sounds. I short-circuit every time Trevor Hamilton looks my way.

Like being a girl isn’t stressful enough.

MY THOUGHTS:
Fused is the first book in the Samantha Granger Experiment and the next book in the series is called Fearless being released this summer.

This was a quick and fun read. After the stress of the holiday season I wanted something light and fun to read and this was it. I manged to read it in one sitting. Plus there was enough happening action wise that made me want to read more to find out what would happen to Samantha.

I had to laugh when I read the back of the book because I was always told that the faced I made or the rolling of my eyes would eventually stay like that from my parents growing up so that brought back some memories. Even to this day I still have a bad habit of rolling my eyes.

Samantha is walking through the woods on her way home from her best friend Melody’s and they are talking on their cell phones (like most kids). Samantha is lost in the woods (Adirondack Mountains) and Melody thinks its funny because Samantha is The Queen of Technology. (She has the latest gadgets)

Samantha spots a light ahead of her and curiosity kills the cat because she goes to check it out. She is nervous and when she gets closer she reaches out to touch it figuring what does she have to loose. Remember growing up and your parents telling you not to touch things? I guess Samantha never got that talk because she reaches out to touch it. The next thing she knows is she is thrown twenty feet backwards (not one scratch or mark to be found on her) and her cell is missing. She is going to be in trouble for loosing her phone.

Its not until the next day when Samantha begins to experience some weird effects such as massive pain in her head and being able to give her mother directions to her soccer game that afternoon. She is freaking out how did that happen? Then alone in her room, pacing back and forth her cell phone rings. She searches her room looking for it but soon realizes its her hand is ringing. How did that happen? She quickly realizes that all the gadgets on her phone are now inside of her such as the camera, GPS, texting etc. She is a walking piece of technology.

She quickly realizes that she has bitten off more then she can chew. Who can she confide in? If she tells her mother she knows she will be taken to all kinds of drs. The only one she can truly trust is Melody, she tells her everything. She has to keep this secret identity hidden no one can find out. She thinks that this is the worse thing that could have happened to her and tries to find a way to get back to normal.

Will Samantha find the way to get back to normal or will something happen to make her realize that what she has could be something special?

I think this is a great book for the tween girl who is into super hero’s but would like the super hero to be a girl instead of the typical boy.

The Samantha Granger Experiment: Fearless (June 15, 2011) This is book 2.

Guest Post by Artie Bennett author of The Butt Book

Hi. Happy New Year! Let me say, first of all, how delighted I am that Cindy has given me an opportunity to discuss my book with her readers on her terrific blog.

I’m frequently asked if I’ve written anything else or was The Butt Book my publishing debut? Well, I did write a couple of other books when I was a much younger man, but I have to say The Butt Book is my first mature work. And readers often wonder whatever possessed me to write this book. Did I have some posterior motive in writing it? The Butt Book has a very interesting backstory. I was familiar with Dr. Seuss’s anatomical series. You may know the Bright and Early Books. There’s The Foot Book, The Ear Book, The Eye Book, The Tooth Book, The Eyetooth Book. They’re delightful. I love these books. And then I had a brainstorm: a butt book would make a great addition to this hallowed series. Now, because Dr. Seuss, sadly, passed away in 1991, he’s no longer around to flesh out the series by writing about butts. (Perhaps he couldn’t have written about butts then, anyway, but times have changed.) And somebody had to. I guess it was cheeky of me, but I decided to do it. So I submitted it to his publisher, but they passed on it. Then it found its way to more butt-friendly precincts, where Bloomsbury liked it and decided to publish it.

When they suggested Mike Lester as illustrator, I was ebullient. And I couldn’t have been happier with the results. He used scratchboard, which endowed his illustrations with a kinetic quality that greatly enlivens the book. His kangaroo, for example, seems poised to hop off the page. And he has such a captivating sense of humor, which perfectly complements my verses, making for a true (and wonderful) collaboration. Many reviewers have remarked about how rare it is for a picture-book author and illustrator to be in such harmony, and when it works, it‘s magical. And the good news is that Mike and I will have a second act. My next book—it’s poop-related, the perfect follow-up, right?—will be coming out in the spring of 2012, but from a different publisher. What’s remarkable is that Mike and I have never met, even though, it turns out, we graduated from the University of Georgia about the very same time. (He still lives in Georgia.) But we have had email exchanges.

I’ve been bowled over by the unbridled enthusiasm with which children—and discerning adults—have greeted the book. It’s so heartening to give the gift of laughter to a child. I had a hunch that it might get that kind of response the very first time I read it aloud. One of my listeners was a gloomy little boy who apparently rarely smiled or laughed. But this boy was transformed. He was guffawing with each verse—and as soon as I was finished, he yelled, “Again!” The metamorphosis was nothing short of astonishing. So I’ve come to recommend a large dose of Butt Book therapy for the child in need of a pick-me-up. Doctor’s orders.

And reviewers have also rhapsodized about The Butt Book, with words like “hysterical” and “hilarious” frequently popping up. One of my first reviews was one I never expected. On a whim, I sent a copy to our borough president. I never imagined I would ever hear back, let alone get this heartfelt letter.

The Butt Book has been a big hit at the festivals I’ve attended this year, where all the books have been snapped up partway through the events. And I’ve had oodles of fun at my bookstore and museum appearances. At one event, during the question-and-answer period, a small girl asked, “Why is your book so disgusting?” A small boy sitting just in front of her yelled out, “It’s not. It’s funny!” So there was the answer. And this little girl wouldn’t leave without a signed copy of The Butt Book, so I realized she meant “disgusting” in a good way.

And I’ve had hecklers at my readings. Who knew!? At my very first appearance, when I finished reading the opening verse (“Eyes and ears are much respected, but the butt has been neglected. We hope to change that hear and now. Would the butt please take a bow?”), a small boy called out, ”That’s not possible!”

I’ve also enjoyed putting together some great butt-related material for my website, artiebennett.com. You’ll find a buttload of fun stuff there, including fascinating butt trivia, more than fifty synonyms for the butt, even a classic butt joke.

Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to read about me and The Butt Book. Bottoms up!!!
